Anybody know the issue with the holes being too big in the bottom and fish swimming out?

Answer: No, i have not had that problem. It would have to be a very small trout. And if he is that small he needs to return to the water.

Where can i buy this net with a carbide frame? all i see are ads with a wooden one. i assume the carbide is lighter.

Answer: Handle is 7” long, great fish protection net, excellent

Answer: The handle itself is about 8" long.

What drives the cost difference between the burl and hardwood nets? Is it the smaller netting?

Answer: The burl nets are a higher quality wood that should last longer and is a much higher quality finish. And yes, the rubber mesh is higher quality as well with smaller holes. I personally use the burl wood on most of my adventures into the backcountry. The hardwood is pretty great too, but just not as light and as nice of a finish. Hope that helps!

How does this net hold up to big fish? Is there any kind of weight rating?

Answer: Not sure what you consider "Big Fish" but I've netted several 14"+ Trout and it handled them well.

Where is this net made?

Answer: the company that sells them is Freestone Outfitters in Colorado. Its a great small/medium size trout net ive had for a few years now. I wouldn't be surprised if it was out of China but you are supporting a US company and its a legitimate quality made net with a good warranty. It looks great in person and has really held up over the years for me.

Answer: I do not find any tags on the net except Freestone Outfitters. They are based out of NC. So I really do not know!

The magnetic release is not pictured - anyone comment on its style?

Does it float

Answer: I can't remember if it floats but your net does and the cable is hooked to your floating net and to your vest when installed properly so you can't loose it. In other words, when installed properly, your net is continuously connected to your fishing vest (or gear holder neck system). You shouldn't be able to loose it!

Answer: Yes, our fly fishing nets floats, but with our magnetic net release it is easy to keep it tethered to your pack or vest and is rarely drifting downstream without you! Thanks for asking.

Is this specific magnet and coil sold separately? Also, does it have wire inside it or is it only plastic?

Answer: Thanks for the question! We do sell them separately as well, but there is no wire in the coil. We are working on upgrading this eventually, but I use this item personally and have never had an issue. We will replace it if it fails you!

What is the weight difference between the wood and carbon fiber nets?

Answer: wood looks better in my opinion, but carbon is lighter and more durable. if you're looking to save ounces, carbon might be a better choice.

how do you get the horrible new net smell out of the net?

Answer: Unfortunately I can't speak to that because my new net didn't have an unpleasant odor .. I would try putting it outside in the sun and see if that helps.

Answer: Well if it has a lanyard you can be sure it won’t fit a tarpon or sturgeon in it... this net is for trout fishing as for size as long as you can scoop the fish up then it’s right size. My question is who actually measures their net and needs to know said dimensions????

Answer: We are a North Carolina based company and our products are made in China.

Answer: Highly doubtful but a good product for the money. It’s not high end but it’s a good value. Doubtful that could be made competitively here in the states. And I deal with China regularly. It’s a labor intensive product which doesn’t fit the US.

Why does your company imply your nets are made in the usa? i was very disappointed when i got my net and it said "made in china"...

How much does the net weigh?

Answer: Not very much ... I attach it on the back of my Fishing vest and never know that it is there ... It's a great net and wonderful customer service from this company.

I like the size of this net. I catch a lot of trout ranging from 14” to 16”, and the frame is a perfect size. What I don’t like is the depth of the net. It’s too shallow, and on 2 occasions, I have had trout jump out.

Clive Fenster : Great Landing Net for Trout (REVISED 07DEC2016)

Chose this net and zinger for trout fishing on smaller streams in the North Carolina mountains.

The carabiner is sturdy, the magnet is strong, and the stretchy cord easily expands to useful length. The net and handle are well made, and it works just fine in practice. Fish haven't seemed harmed at all by contact with the rubber mesh.

The size is a bit on the small side, if you land anything in the 16-inch range or larger; a larger fish might come out if he's feisty.

EDIT 12/7/2016: The magnet came out of the half of the keeper attached to the net handle. Luckily, it's a strong magnet, so it stayed on the metal. I super-glued it and am hoping it stays put.

EDIT 2/27/2017: The seller replied to my review and offered to send a new magnetic release. After my super-glue fix failed, I took him up on it. TWO new releases arrived quickly. No problems with either. Great customer support!

If you're considering getting this combo, DO IT. you will not believe how convenient this is until you try it. Fight a fish bring it in, and BAM your net is available in an instant. and once you're done, just bring it close to the magnet and it's grabbed in place again. Simple as that. There are a ton of different wood nets with clear rubber mesh out there. I looked at one at my local big box sports store and decided it felt too cheap. Looked at a few more places then looked at quite a few on Amazon. I saw this net from Freestone and remembered that I purchased a magnetic net release from them that worked very well, so I decided to order this net. The wood feels more dense and sturdier than some of the other wooden nets I looked at. Also the rubber mesh seemed better quality too both in materials and how securely it's attached to the wooden hoop of the net. I haven't had the chance to bring it on the water with me yet but I have a feeling it will hold up very well. Should I have any issues I'll be sure to come back and update my review, but as of now I'm very happy with my purchase.

I ordered this net for a trip to the Sierra stream fishing my wife and I are going to be doing in about 1 week from now.
I placed the order in hoping it would arrive on time, it arrived a day earlier than promised.
Quality of the net is awesome and we are looking forward to using it very soon.
The clear rubber will help prevent trauma to the fish on capture, rubber hook free net helps not getting the hook stuck in the net, and helps not rubbing any of the protective slim off that the fish have from infections for catch and release.
The wood frame is very well constructed and has a nice finish to it.
It looks as though this net will last a very long time.

In the Uinta mountains the river fishing was outstanding this past June.

This net is a bit small and not deep enough for some of the fish we were catching. Some got away that should have been "in the net." However, I was releasing them anyway, so no big deal. That said, if you were netting a fish for a friend (much less to eat), it would be more disappointing.

The net is nicely finished, lightweight and easy to handle. Just needs to be a bit deeper.

"Stretch", which I rated at 1 is not really an issue for a fishing net, don't know why they selected it as a criteria.

The skinny... : Look no further..you won't find better, no matter what the name brand on your net says.

I fish the Arkansas tailwaters for trout, and you have to be ready for a trophy fish at any time. At first, I thought it too large at first but as I watched others trying to net fish with smaller nets I realized it was an absolute necessity. It is much better on the fish health-wise than other types of nets. The wood is sturdy, hard, and well finished. The lanyard hooks up by a magnet attached to the back of your vest with a magnet, and a magnet also attached to the base of the net. I have never had it accidentally release. The magnet is quite strong. The lanyard is plenty long enough to work with when reaching out for a fish but being a coiled one, it has never gotten in the way nor have I hung a single fly or my line in it. It is simply trouble free. The biggest question is..how do you reattach it after you use it? Because the attachment point is behind your neck and hard to reach! HOWEVER..no PROBLEM! All you have to do is get it close and the magnets snap themselves together.. "CLICK!" Ready to go! It is heavier than the cheaper, smaller ones. This is a problem for ME, as my shoulders start to get sore from the wieght of the vest and the drag from behind. But this isn't a problem with the product in my opinion. I could hang it from other places, and I already have a problem with my shoulders. I can tell you that the extra 10 bucks for the magnetic release is absolutely worth it. These types of magnets would cost the manufacturer a pretty penny due to the strength of them. Probably neodymium. And on top of all that, you can scoff at lesser fishermen for their nets because this is top of the line! :) I expect many, many good years out of this. I did note someone posted a magnet fell out on them and the company replaced it no problem. I will probably modify mine with some sealant to prevent that, though I don't really anticipate this happening to anyone regularly. If you are looking for a net, THIS IS THE ONE..and ADD the magnet option. You can check my review history and see I am NOT a bought reviewer. I paid full price for the item.

I have been trout fishing for years and a net has always been a necessary evil. This net has turned the chore into a pleasure. Attaches easily to the magnet attached to a D-ring at the top/rear of my vest. Easy to reach around and grab it. Hooks do not get snagged in webbing. Great design!

Upon removal of the fishing net from the box, a quick inspection immediately revealed that the net was already torn (see picture)! Certainly a big disappointment, and hoping that Southern Fox Outfitters will correct this situation quickly, since I am leaving on a trout trip in 3 days. FOLLOW-UP #1 ON POOR QUALITY ISSUE: No reply received from seller after one month of waiting. Apparently it is a case of "Buyer Beware" because if the product is defective right out of the box, the seller does not care to do the right thing and replace the product with a non-defective one. Will continue to post here in the future to let potential buyers know if any reply is ever received.

This material is a wonderful improvement over traditional nets. Old style string nets were a magnet for treble hooks. I had to cut the hooks out with a knife and this eventually destroyed the nets. Not anymore...love this net.
