Questions about Fly Fishing Set: Rubber Mesh Net, Magnetic Release
Q:
Anybody know the issue with the holes being too big in the bottom and fish swimming out?
Answer: No, i have not had that problem. It would have to be a very small trout. And if he is that small he needs to return to the water.
Q:
Where can i buy this net with a carbide frame? all i see are ads with a wooden one. i assume the carbide is lighter.
Answer: Hi,
Q:
When I order the net with the magnetic release, can you specify the green colored catch?
Answer: Thanks for the question. Unfortunately we don’t have a set with the green magnetic release. You can buy them separately if you wish. We are almost out of stock of the single nets but will have more soon.
Answer: I'm not sure what you are asking?
Q:
How long is the handle?
Answer: Handle is 7” long, great fish protection net, excellent
Answer: The handle itself is about 8" long.
Q:
What drives the cost difference between the burl and hardwood nets? Is it the smaller netting?
Answer: The burl nets are a higher quality wood that should last longer and is a much higher quality finish. And yes, the rubber mesh is higher quality as well with smaller holes. I personally use the burl wood on most of my adventures into the backcountry. The hardwood is pretty great too, but just not as light and as nice of a finish. Hope that helps!
Q:
How does this net hold up to big fish? Is there any kind of weight rating?
Answer: Not sure what you consider "Big Fish" but I've netted several 14"+ Trout and it handled them well.
Q:
Where is this net made?
Answer: the company that sells them is Freestone Outfitters in Colorado. Its a great small/medium size trout net ive had for a few years now. I wouldn't be surprised if it was out of China but you are supporting a US company and its a legitimate quality made net with a good warranty. It looks great in person and has really held up over the years for me.
Answer: I do not find any tags on the net except Freestone Outfitters. They are based out of NC. So I really do not know!
Q:
The magnetic release is not pictured - anyone comment on its style?
Answer: Hi there,
Answer: It works great. It is on a spiral bungee type cord that allows you movement with net. Magnet is perfect strength!
Answer: You have to order it separate they work great
Q:
With the burl wood net, are the holes small like the carbon fiber net or are they bigger like the other nets with the big holes at the bottom?
Answer: Thanks for asking,
Answer: The holes are about the size of a US quarter.
Answer: Perfect no problem
Q:
Does it float
Answer: I can't remember if it floats but your net does and the cable is hooked to your floating net and to your vest when installed properly so you can't loose it. In other words, when installed properly, your net is continuously connected to your fishing vest (or gear holder neck system). You shouldn't be able to loose it!
Answer: Yes, our fly fishing nets floats, but with our magnetic net release it is easy to keep it tethered to your pack or vest and is rarely drifting downstream without you! Thanks for asking.
Answer: It does not float but come with a magnetic hook for easy release from your belt
Q:
Is this specific magnet and coil sold separately? Also, does it have wire inside it or is it only plastic?
Answer: Thanks for the question! We do sell them separately as well, but there is no wire in the coil. We are working on upgrading this eventually, but I use this item personally and have never had an issue. We will replace it if it fails you!
Answer: Not sure if sold separately but I know you can find them. No wire in the coil.
Q:
Do you offer a replacement net that’s deeper than the one the net comes with? I’ve lost two trout that jumped out before I could snap a pic.
Q:
Tengo una pregunta como le ago para obtener articulos cada mes e visto q ay tiendas q asi manejan ay presios de 15 a25 dls o es auna tiemda en especial
Q:
what is the weight of the net?
Answer: I don't know the exact weight of the net. I would guess it weighs less than a pound. It's very well made and I carry it on the back of my vest, don't even feel it.
Answer: 13 ounces without magnetic release
Answer: Approx 0.8 lbs
Q:
Will you be restocking the burl wood version of this net any time soon?
Q:
Where is this product made?
Answer: Look up Freestone Outfitters in colorado. They are the sellers.
Q:
What size are the openings in the net? Will they hold 10 inch trout without slipping through an opening?
Answer: By my measurement, the largest holes are 1.25" x 1". Would be able to hold an 8" trout without issue.
Answer: Yes! Openings are about an inch in diameter - it's a great net
Q:
How does this net handle 25"+ trout? fishing pyramid lake, nv
Answer: It'll be tight........but the net is great.
Answer: It would be a bit small for a fish that large.
Answer: I’ve netted 20-22” largemouth bass witch plenty room to spare
Answer: Id say go bigger, with a longer handle especially.
Answer: I think it would be too small. I use mine in small streams. It measure 8” deep, 16.5” long, and 10” wide.
Answer: Yes...but not as often as I'd like. :)
Q:
Does this net float?
Answer: Yes it does. Thanks
Q:
What is for sell here? the "fly fishing set: rubber mesh net, magnetic release"? vs discription, "magnetic net release & carabiner not included"
Answer: Hmmm. That is confusing. All I can tell you is that I ordered it and it did come with the magnetic release and carabiner. I paid $39.99 when I ordered it and it and I am very happy with my purchase.
Answer: Sorry for the confusion. The combo “net and magnetic release are currently out of stock.” Right now it is just the net only by itself, which we offer as a cheaper option for our customers that don’t need the magnet.
Answer: Not sure - mine came with net release and carabiner. Love the product....
Answer: Mine came with the whole kit and caboodle
Q:
What is the weight difference between the wood and carbon fiber nets?
Answer: wood looks better in my opinion, but carbon is lighter and more durable. if you're looking to save ounces, carbon might be a better choice.
Q:
how do you get the horrible new net smell out of the net?
Answer: Unfortunately I can't speak to that because my new net didn't have an unpleasant odor .. I would try putting it outside in the sun and see if that helps.
Answer: Use it.
Q:
Why don't nets list actual net sizes ( width, length. depth )? This seems to be an issue across all nets. How basic is that information?
Answer: Hi,
Answer: Also under specific details it gives you the size of this net!!!!!
Answer: Well if it has a lanyard you can be sure it won’t fit a tarpon or sturgeon in it... this net is for trout fishing as for size as long as you can scoop the fish up then it’s right size. My question is who actually measures their net and needs to know said dimensions????
Q:
Is this product made in the USA?
Answer: We are a North Carolina based company and our products are made in China.
Answer: Highly doubtful but a good product for the money. It’s not high end but it’s a good value. Doubtful that could be made competitively here in the states. And I deal with China regularly. It’s a labor intensive product which doesn’t fit the US.
Q:
Why does your company imply your nets are made in the usa? i was very disappointed when i got my net and it said "made in china"...
Q:
How much does the net weigh?
Answer: Not very much ... I attach it on the back of my Fishing vest and never know that it is there ... It's a great net and wonderful customer service from this company.
Product reviews of Fly Fishing Set: Rubber Mesh Net, Magnetic Release
Gerald : Great net & release system plus EXCEPTIONAL CUSTOMER SERVICE
If your looking for a lightweight, well made, attractive, easy to manage Trout Net then look no further .. This net is so well made & easy to use on the river .. It's lightweight design doesn't become a burden when spending a long day fishing while wading the river .. It's magnetic release system is perfect for keeping it in place and out of your way until you need it .. Its magnetic is very strong and attaches itself easily once they get somewhat close together .. Therefore making it very easy and convenient to use no matter where you attach it .. The rubber mesh simply disappears in the water therefore reducing the chances of spooking the fish and also prevents your fly from getting tangled up in the webbing .. I highly recommend this Fly Fishing Net if you're in the market for one.
Note: When I received this net it was missing its Carabine and therefore rendered it unable to attach it to my D-ring ... I didn't want to go through the hassle of returning it to Amazon and reordering another one so I simply reached out to the seller and they immediately responded and apologized for the inconvenience and shipped me not only the missing Carabine but the Complete Magnetic Release System as well ... Exceptional Customer Service!!
Rikiya Usuzawa : Not very durable.
I like the ease of the magnet attachment and release. However, the screw attached to the end of the net fell out and was stripped the very first use. I had to carry it for the entire day. Poorly constructed. I gorilla glued it back in and seems be ok.
bethie623 : Awesome!
It’s actually pretty. Weird to say about a net, but it’s true. Love the magnet lock. Secure to pack nicely. My son is a fly fisherman and loves this net!
scott abrott : Second net, same brand, better clasp.
I had the same net for years. Unfortunately due to poor clasp on the previous model, I lost mine last week. The lost net was beautiful with the deep red two tone as in the picture. The new net is a bit plain, all blond. But they have upgraded the clasp which is a good thing. Other than a minor quality control defect in the wood (it’s a net, it will get those after one trip) and the disappointing blah wood shade, it should stand up to the same rigors and big fish as I had with the last one.
NoCO mom : Great net
Good net - quite large and somewhat heavier than expected- easily grabs an 18" trout.
Clive Fenster : Great Landing Net for Trout (REVISED 07DEC2016)
Chose this net and zinger for trout fishing on smaller streams in the North Carolina mountains.
The carabiner is sturdy, the magnet is strong, and the stretchy cord easily expands to useful length. The net and handle are well made, and it works just fine in practice. Fish haven't seemed harmed at all by contact with the rubber mesh.
The size is a bit on the small side, if you land anything in the 16-inch range or larger; a larger fish might come out if he's feisty.
EDIT 12/7/2016: The magnet came out of the half of the keeper attached to the net handle. Luckily, it's a strong magnet, so it stayed on the metal. I super-glued it and am hoping it stays put.
EDIT 2/27/2017: The seller replied to my review and offered to send a new magnetic release. After my super-glue fix failed, I took him up on it. TWO new releases arrived quickly. No problems with either. Great customer support!
Amazon Customer : Happy with Purchase
Was a present so not sure how well it's working out, but seemed like a very nice net.
Midnight Hoss : Great net.
The magnet is very strong. It has a good net and looks cool.
Dave : Net was defective, right out of the box!
Upon removal of the fishing net from the box, a quick inspection immediately revealed that the net was already torn (see picture)! Certainly a big disappointment, and hoping that Southern Fox Outfitters will correct this situation quickly, since I am leaving on a trout trip in 3 days. Freestone is supposed to be good quality gear....please help!
FOLLOW-UP #1 ON POOR QUALITY ISSUE: No reply received from seller after one month of waiting. Apparently it is a case of "Buyer Beware" because if the product is defective right out of the box, the seller does not care to do the right thing and replace the product with a non-defective one. Will continue to post here in the future to let potential buyers know if any reply is ever received.
Niteowl5 : Good Catch
Good quality net, strong magnet, quick delivery. Very happy with this purchase and Freestone Outfitters.
Adrian P Galvan : Good secure bungee and plastic cord
Love it. Still with me 5 months later....
ski boat driver : Very nice net at this price point
Description was accurate. Arrived quickly. Build and utility is very good.
Robert : Great product for the price
Product works perfectly.
Jeff : Lower quality net but great for the price
Lower quality net but great for the price. It preforms it’s intended purpose flawlessly. A little wide for my taste tho.
The skinny... : Look no further..you won't find better, no matter what the name brand on your net says.
I fish the Arkansas tailwaters for trout, and you have to be ready for a trophy fish at any time. At first, I thought it too large at first but as I watched others trying to net fish with smaller nets I realized it was an absolute necessity. It is much better on the fish health-wise than other types of nets. The wood is sturdy, hard, and well finished. The lanyard hooks up by a magnet attached to the back of your vest with a magnet, and a magnet also attached to the base of the net. I have never had it accidentally release. The magnet is quite strong. The lanyard is plenty long enough to work with when reaching out for a fish but being a coiled one, it has never gotten in the way nor have I hung a single fly or my line in it. It is simply trouble free. The biggest question is..how do you reattach it after you use it? Because the attachment point is behind your neck and hard to reach! HOWEVER..no PROBLEM! All you have to do is get it close and the magnets snap themselves together.. "CLICK!" Ready to go! It is heavier than the cheaper, smaller ones. This is a problem for ME, as my shoulders start to get sore from the wieght of the vest and the drag from behind. But this isn't a problem with the product in my opinion. I could hang it from other places, and I already have a problem with my shoulders. I can tell you that the extra 10 bucks for the magnetic release is absolutely worth it. These types of magnets would cost the manufacturer a pretty penny due to the strength of them. Probably neodymium. And on top of all that, you can scoff at lesser fishermen for their nets because this is top of the line! :) I expect many, many good years out of this. I did note someone posted a magnet fell out on them and the company replaced it no problem. I will probably modify mine with some sealant to prevent that, though I don't really anticipate this happening to anyone regularly. If you are looking for a net, THIS IS THE ONE..and ADD the magnet option. You can check my review history and see I am NOT a bought reviewer. I paid full price for the item.
Jim R. : Not deep enough for big fish!
This is a nice net , but not deep enough for big fish (19+").
muskyhunter36 : Great net
Light weight and easy to use, real easy to get fish into net because of the net is clear, fast shipping, would buy again.
Kristy : Meh....
Elastic lanyard broke on the very first fish I went to land, just by pulling it down from my body to the water. Tied a quick one turn blood knot to patch it up for the day. Eye screw came out of the net handle on the second fish. Net looks nice, does what it's supposed to do, but the supplied lanyard and eye screw are complete trash.
Amazon Customer : Burl wood net is high quality
Absolutely love the burl wood net. Amazing quality and the magnet system is awesome for hiking, wading, or kayaking. Glad I saved $100+ and went with this net. I’ve used it for 6” rainbows to 5lbs bass and it works like a champ no matter the size.
Rocker : Awesomeness
Awesome net!!! Clip is great and the magnetic release is sweet!!! I recomend this to any fly fisherman.
John B Sargeant : Great natural net/magnetic attachment combo.
Just received. Net to hardwood frame looks well thought out and constructed. Time will tell. Great size. Most of all, magnetic attachment is "strong", ...and they send an extra solid attachment if you choose. I'll amend tis after my Co. trip in fall. Super fast shipping.
Michael Dervage : A bit too small for the fish we were catching in June.
In the Uinta mountains the river fishing was outstanding this past June.
This net is a bit small and not deep enough for some of the fish we were catching. Some got away that should have been "in the net." However, I was releasing them anyway, so no big deal. That said, if you were netting a fish for a friend (much less to eat), it would be more disappointing.
The net is nicely finished, lightweight and easy to handle. Just needs to be a bit deeper.
"Stretch", which I rated at 1 is not really an issue for a fishing net, don't know why they selected it as a criteria.
Zack : Five Stars
It is large and holds a fish on the fly well.
Pete : Treble hooks don't get caught in it.
This material is a wonderful improvement over traditional nets. Old style string nets were a magnet for treble hooks. I had to cut the hooks out with a knife and this eventually destroyed the nets. Not anymore...love this net.
NoCO mom : Great net
Good net - quite large and somewhat heavier than expected- easily grabs an 18" trout.
Hark : Not Bad!
It's adequate for the job.
anon : Used in lab to transport fish between aquaria - perfect!
100% satisfied. Net material was ideal for gentle handling of fish for research.
Niteowl5 : Good Catch
Good quality net, strong magnet, quick delivery. Very happy with this purchase and Freestone Outfitters.
Chris S. : amazing net for the price
holds up, well made, looks awesome with the burl wood. very happy with it.
Zack : Five Stars
It is large and holds a fish on the fly well.
Rikiya Usuzawa : Not very durable.
I like the ease of the magnet attachment and release. However, the screw attached to the end of the net fell out and was stripped the very first use. I had to carry it for the entire day. Poorly constructed. I gorilla glued it back in and seems be ok.
Tim : Great buy
It's a great net, perfect for fishing medium to small streams
N. Craig : What's pictured is not what you get
Well I thought I'd get a carabiner and a quality wooden frame, that's not what I received, no carabiner, no quality inlaid hardwood handle .....
Amazon Customer : Really well made
Great net
Mike Meredith : Quality of the net is awesome and we are looking forward to using it very ...
I ordered this net for a trip to the Sierra stream fishing my wife and I are going to be doing in about 1 week from now.
I placed the order in hoping it would arrive on time, it arrived a day earlier than promised.
Quality of the net is awesome and we are looking forward to using it very soon.
The clear rubber will help prevent trauma to the fish on capture, rubber hook free net helps not getting the hook stuck in the net, and helps not rubbing any of the protective slim off that the fish have from infections for catch and release.
The wood frame is very well constructed and has a nice finish to it.
It looks as though this net will last a very long time.
scott abrott : Second net, same brand, better clasp.
Malachy B. : Great net and beautifully made
After looking at the other nets I decided to pay a little extra for this one for its finish. It is light and the magnet works really well.
Michael Dervage : A bit too small for the fish we were catching in June.

Tim : Great buy
It's a great net, perfect for fishing medium to small streams
Breck : Did not come with Magnetic Release
My net showed up without the Magnetic Release that was advertised in the pictures. Pretty disappointed because I like to keep all my gear secured to my pack/waders, and that was one of the main reasons I bought this net.
Scott in Vermont : Great net - good price
As advertised. Great net - good price. Hole patters is on the larger size so 6" fish may slip through.
Maggie : Get this one
Works great. The bunji cord has never tangled and the net is fairly lightweight. I will buy another one if I ever need to.
California Bill : Haven't used it yet, but seems to be good quality
Wood work looks very nice, and the lanyard stud at the end of the handle seems pretty sturdy. Magnetic release appears to be as good as any I've seen on other nets (or as a 3rd party add-on). Very light in the hand. Can't wait to test it out!
Breck : Did not come with Magnetic Release
My net showed up without the Magnetic Release that was advertised in the pictures. Pretty disappointed because I like to keep all my gear secured to my pack/waders, and that was one of the main reasons I bought this net.
B. Owen : I'm surprised at how nice this is.
This fly fishing net goes to show you that you don't have to buy a premium name net to get quality. Well unless you just have to have name brand stuff, it's your money.
If your looking a for a good fly fishing net just get this one. The plus is the clip and magnet attachment.
This net will last me the rest of my life and I will be able to hand it down.
Dan : Not for stream fishing, net has BIG hole pattern
Nice quality, but holes and net are way to big, small to medium size stream trout and swim right through the net.
Paul : Nicely made and wont hurt the fish
I use this trout fishing. The wood is nice and the netting wont hurt the fish. The magnet is very strong. I might wish it was a big bigger, but I wish the fish I catch were bigger too! Overall, very nice.
ElbowJoe : Superior upgrade from my old cloth trout net!!
Really nice net. The magnetic release works really well. Great upgrade from my cloth net it replaces. Hooks don't get caught in the rubber net nor to tree branches when walking on the river bank. Great quality!!
Jason : Great looking net
Great looking net and can't beat the price.
