Product reviews of Abu Garcia Ambassadeur SX Baitcast Fishing Reel
Nay : Abu Garcia Ambassador 6600
I like the reel but it's on back order I guess. My account keeps saying " needs approval ".
Vince C : Worth the money.
First off, if you read the fishing forums, you will see a lot of people say that these reels are junk. I'm sure this is because they're made in China. But I truly believe that a majority of the people on the net who are calling these reels junk have never owned one, fished with one or even handled one.
I purchased three of these to be used for catfishing. I'm primarily a bass fisherman so I'm not going to invest a lot of money in my catfishing gear. I wanted three setups for channel cats up to about 25lbs. I live in NJ and I don't have to worry about hooking blue cats or flatheads.
I have a old Abu 6000 and a newer Abu 5501C3. The Abu 6000 is right hand retrieve and the 5501 is left handed retrieve. For those of you who didn't know, if an Abu the model number ends with 01 it's a left hand retrieve. I'm right handed but I'm more comfortable with left handed baitcasters. The 5501 is a great reel but I wanted something a little larger and with a clicker.
Upon taking the SX6601 out of the box the first thing I noticed is that is seemed smaller than my 6000. I compared the two side by side and the frames and the spools were the same size. I believe that the SX6601 appears smaller because of the contoured handle and the recessed reel foot. But this is a good thing as it feels a lot less bulky in the hand. When cranking the reel it felt as smooth as the C3. I opened up the reel and saw that the main gears were brass. However, the gear at the end of the spool opposite the side where the main gears are, is made of plastic. I don't recall if my C3 is the same and I didn't bother to check. The line guide is made of plastic and it does seem a bit delicate. The clickers on all three reels are a bit on the quiet side and took some breaking in to turn them on and off with ease. Based on what I saw, it appears that the reel is worth the price. I've read that people were having problems with the clicker failing on these reels. I recall that this happened with my 6000 in the past and it was an easy fix.
So, I spooled them up with 60 lb braid, tied on a 3oz weight and went out to a field to see how they casted. I was impressed with how far it casted for a reel this price. Maybe not as smooth casting as my other Abu's but not bad at all. And like my other Abu's, is was hard to get a backlash. The drag seemed good from what I can tell without actually catching a big fish. But I'm not too concerned with the drag when fishing with 60lb braid and fiber glass rods. I don't plan on using these reels for spring and fall stripers. For them I will stick to Abu 7000 cs pro rockets.
The only other reels that I've had experience with in the same price range is the Shimano Corvalus 400 and the Ming Yang CL60L. The Corvalus isn't as smooth, doesn't cast as far and I have had problems with the spool release getting stuck. The Ming Yang is built like a tank with more metal parts and has a really loud clicker. Not as smooth as the Abu and doesn't cast as far but it's about $20.00 cheaper that the Abu. Both the CL60L and Corvalus 400 are a bit wider than the Abu 6000 series reels. So if you're considering this reel as an inexpensive beater for catfish, I would definitely go for it. Or, of you don't mind the extra weight and size the Ming Yang is hard to beat for the price.
I will try to update this review at a later time after I get a chance to put the reel through some tests and actually catch some fish with them.
Update: I finally had a chance to spend some time on the river and catch some cats with these reels. The biggest was about 12lbs. With a pretty strong current, I had absolutely no problems with the reels. The drags performed flawlessly.
