Questions about Okuma MA-20DLXT New Magda Linecounter Reel
Q:
What is the difference between the dx and dxt models?
Answer: Improved line counter, anti reverse and design
Q:
Left or right reel
Answer: Right hand for all 4 sizes, left hand available on 20 and 30 only (as of Dec 2017).
Answer: CRANK WITH THE RIGHT HAND
Answer: Left hand
Q:
how many pound drag for the ma-20 model?
Answer: It has 15lbs of drag. I use mine for a Sabiki reel and it does very well.
Q:
How many pounds of drag does the magda dxt 45 line counter reel have?
Answer: the Magda Ma-45DXT has a max drag of 18 lbs.
Answer: The 45EXT Has 18lbs of drag. It's fine for medium sized ocean fish. The only problem I have with it is the play in the spool.
Q:
does it count reeling in as well as letting line out?
Answer: The line counter is mechanical and will count up when letting line out and count down as you are reeling the line in.
Answer: Yes it does count both ways.
Answer: yes, in reverse
Q:
Does it have a clicker?
Answer: yes it does.
Answer: yes
Q:
Does this reel have a bait clicker?
Answer: Yes
Q:
Is there an option for left hand reel in the 45 dxt like the smaller (15 & 20 lb.) reels?
Answer: Yes, check out Amazon, punch in left hand reel in that size
Q:
whats the retrieve ratio?
Answer: Retrieve ratio depends on the size. Ratio is 5.1:1 on the 15 and 20, and 4.0:1 on the 30 and 45. Also same inches of line retrieved per turn on the 15 and 20 due to same spool diameter. The 45 is slightly faster than the 30 due to slightly larger spool diameter and/or gears.
Answer: 5.1.1
Q:
Looking at purchasing the ma-15 dxt-t but the shipping says usually ships between 1 and 2 months? is this true? i'd like to see it in 1-2 weeks.
Answer: no had mine in just a few days
Q:
Can you put a battery in the counter
Answer: The line counter is a mechanical part and does not require batteries.
Answer: It’s all mechanical, no batteries are required.
Answer: No. Not in a standard purchased 20DXLT
Answer: No
Q:
Does this have a on/clicker for the drag?
Answer: The Magda star drag reels feature a bait clicker which can be turned on or off with a switch.
Answer: Yes
Answer: Yes
Q:
would the 15dxt size reel. be good for ice jigging perch size fish?
Answer: Yes, but you really wouldn’t need a lune counter for that.
Q:
How tall is the ma 20dlxt from the bottom of the reel foot to the top of the counter?
Q:
Line eye gets stuck
Answer: I have several of these line counter in use for Striped Bass and have had no issues. I use both braded and mono line.
Answer: The level wind line guide has a screw on the bottom... maybe it came loose? I have the heaviest duty model, it has been very reliable. No problems at all. I use mine every weekend in saltwater.
Answer: I'm not sure what your question is but both my wife and I have one and experienced no issues at all. They reel fine and measure accurately. As suggested we filled the entire spool with 15 lbs test monofilament and used them to troll (successfully!) for speckled trout.
Q:
Is it palmable like the abu garcia line counter?
Answer: No
Q:
Just bought this and am inexperienced in fishing. Isn't the spool supposed to turn if I crank the knob? Right now it doesn't.
Answer: Try tightening the drag. Its the star looking wheel next to handle. Mine are right handed retrieve. so clockwise tightens.
Answer: Yes, it is supposed to turn. Tighten the drag.
Answer: Make sure the clutch bar is engaged and in the ON position. Also make sure that the star drag is tightened so that you have some drag pressure.
Q:
Is braided line okay on this reel
Answer: yes.. I use mono backing and only put on 150 yds of braid on top the mono.. and of course made sure in the end the spool is full.
Answer: I would think so. I put lead core for down rigger.
Q:
Does this reel come right and left handed?
Answer: The Magda pro reels come in both right and left handed models. The left handed model is the MA-20DLXT .
Q:
Does the ma-15dxt or the ma-20dxt have a level line counter? can't see one in the pictures.
Answer: It's there... in the upper right hand corner of the picture... it says Depth Counter. ;)
Q:
Does the ma-15dxt come with the second handel in the box?
Answer: No
Q:
would this reel be good for stealhead
Answer: Can't imagine why not if fishing from a boat. I have boated 25 - 33 pound Chinook off the North end of Vancouver Island and up to 22 pound Lake Trout from inland lakes. All trolling off down riggers and dipsy divers. There are better choices if fishing from shore.
Answer: If you’re using it for trolling yes. I have the smallest version that I use for trout trolling. I don’t really know anything about steelhead fishing so I’m not sure if trolling is common. I guess if you were drifting in a boat it would work OK too.
Answer: I'm sure it would work, I use mine for rainbow and speckled trouts.
Q:
I need 4 and you only have 1 available. Can i have a ship date on a order of 4?
Q:
Double or single handle
Answer: Pictures aren't completely accurate as of Nov 2017. Double handle on 15, single on sizes 20, 30, 45. Sizes 30 and 45 have a larger knob than the 20, both are definitely a nice upgrade from the previous generation. I've seen pictures of a 45 that has two holes in the handle arm, which would allow the user to increase/decrease leverage - I don't have one in hand, so I'm not positive on this.
Answer: Ours is 20DXT single handle.
Answer: The handle is only on the one side. I wish it could be used with either hand.
Answer: Single
Answer: Exactly as shown
Q:
Is this madx30dxt left handed
Answer: The picture is of a right handed reel. The description is a left handed reel. MA-30DLXT = left handed / MA-30DXT is right handed. The line counter is facing you when mounted on a trolling rod with the handle on the right side or left side depending on reel model
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: cant find reel on line cant tell you
Answer: No
Q:
Would this be able to hand 30lb mono backing to a 27lb leadcore
Answer: Although I don't use lead core (I use downriggers or divers). I don't think a 20 DX has enough spool capacity for your line size. Not sure what your target fish is but I have had 20 # Chinook and 15 # Coho run off 150 yds at a time. I have had halibut (I think) spool off 300 yds and gone along with$80 worth of braid line and gear (twice). Shame on me. Too many boats and too little time to give chase.
Answer: Check the line capacity of the reel
Answer: Yes it can I run 65pound braided line.
Answer: maybe only 5 color.
Q:
is this a level wind reel?
Answer: I bought 6 of these and all of them were just as the item description says, a stainless steel level wind system. Absolutely no problems with these reels.
Q:
is gear for line guide plastic?
Answer: Yes, according to the manufacturer it's a Stainless steel levelwind line guide system.
Q:
How much line does it hold
Answer: The reels can easily hold 300 yards of line depending on the line size ( 8 lb ; 10 lb 12 lb and 14lb test). I currently have about 280 to 290 yards of 12 lb test line on my reels with a little room to spare.
Answer: Th
Answer: will it hold 20-25 lbs line, also for trolling, for salmon.
Answer: weight lbs/yds: 10/330; 12/290; 14/240
Q:
how acurate is the line counter
Answer: Very. Best line counter I have
Answer: Sorry, Haven't had a chance to try it out yet.
Answer: Seems to be accurate
Answer: I think it's pretty accurate.
Q:
Is the line counter in metric or standard?
Answer: standard
Answer: Standard, it counts in feet.
Answer: Standard. It measures in feet.⁰
Answer: Standard
Answer: If you are in the US then it is feet.
Answer: It is in feet.
Answer: In feet
Q:
What is the line capacity of 30 lb mono or braided
Answer: I have 65 pound braided line 300 yards with mono backing on it
Q:
Does the ma-20dxt come with the second handel in the box?
Answer: No it does not
Q:
Can you use wire line for trolling Striped Bass with this reel?
Answer: I probably would not. you must be in new england somewhere.. my old stomping grounds. why troll for stripers.. fish live bait in rock piles for the cows..
Q:
Can i get this okuma 15 in a left hand
Answer: I don’t know?
Q:
Is there a cast drag, like a magnetic control to help control backlash?
Answer: yes.. it's on the side of your reel
Q:
Want to troll for salmon and steel head 30 pound salmon should i use a 45 or 30 and why is the 30 more expensive than the 45
Answer: Get the 45 for more line capacity. If you want to run lead core or copper the 30 isn’t quite big enough. As far as the price the only thing I can think of is supply and demand.
Answer: the 30 is more popular hence the higher price. go 30 and fight that fish
Q:
can you put lead line on this reel?
Answer: yes
Answer: Yes, you can fit 100yds of backing and 10 colours (100yds) of 27lb leadline on these This answer is for the 45 size only. Cheers Col
Answer: Yes. I own the 20 running 30# braid. I would go at least size 30 if you want to run more that a few colors
Q:
is this saltwater rated?
Answer: Not sure whether or not it's "rated" for saltwater. Lots of graphite in the construction, and only 2 bearings, so salt shouldn't be a huge issue with average care. I wouldn't hesitate to take it out on the big blue for it's intended uses (not a tuna reel).
Answer: Yes I believe it is as it states in the owner's manual after you are done fishing you should spray it off with "fresh water" and wipe it off with a smooth cloth.
Q:
Can we cast this reel?
Answer: I can cast it a little bit, but it's not designed for that.
Answer: No, this is not an ideal castIng reel, it is more designed for trolling. Cheers Col
Answer: No. It is for trolling.
Answer: You probably can if you're not using lead line like I do.
Q:
How many colors of lead core 18lb. will this reel hold
Answer: 5 I think
Q:
can you put lead line on this reel?
Q:
Can I load the ma-45dxt with 200 ft. Of 45lb. Lead core
Answer: You should be able to fit 10 colors of lead core on the 45DXT which is more than 200 ft.
Q:
Does the depth counter change depending on what size line you use?
Answer: Depending on what diameter line you use you will have to calibrate it for accuracy. You do this by spooling line on the reel, when near capacity you measure off 100' and check it against your line counter. If you don't have enough line on your reading will be high when you measure against the line counter. To much line and your line counter will be under 100' when measured out. You can Google calibrating a line counter for additional info. Its a must do if your trolling and using the dive charts.
Answer: Change occurs as the diameter of the filled spool changes. These types of reels are generally calibrated to be accurate when the spool is full - they do not compensate for distance as the spool diameter changes when line is released (that would be expensive technology). When the spool empties there are more spool revolutions per quantity of line dispensed/retrieved, which overestimates the count. Therefore, the thicker the line used, the more quickly accuracy will diminish. I would choose a larger size reel to reduce this effect when using larger-diameter lines.
Answer: The counter measures yardage of line released from the reel. There is no adjustment for the diameter of line loaded onto the reel, however this would make little difference in the reading.
Answer: Yes it will change. In order to get the most accurate reading you should use MFG. recommended line weight.
Answer: Shouldnt make much of a difference
Answer: No, it's based on the revolutions of the spool.
Answer: No. Stays pretty consistent
Q:
Did the okuma magda star drag levelwind line counter reel size 30 ma-30dxt by okuma come in a box or a bubble pack?
Answer: The Okuma MA-45DXT New Magda Linecounter Reel came in a box. (Not the same model, but very similar.)
Answer: As I recall, the reel itself arrived in a box. That box was wrapped in bubble wrap and shipped in a larger box
Answer: Okuma factory boxed.
Answer: I bought two of them last year and each one of them was in a separate box with instructions.
Answer: Mine came in a box.
Answer: The one I ordered came in a box.
Q:
Does it come with or can you get a single knob power handle for the 15 DXT ?
Answer: No, I tried !!
Q:
Buying this for the line counter; casting for bass/lake trout from inflatable boat, w ocassional trolling. What inexpensive rod to pair with this?
Answer: Match the pole with the line weight and you’ll be fine. I fish for walleye anywhere from 40 to 80 foot of water and use lead line so my pole is rated 10/15 lbs line. Hope that helps
Q:
Does this real have a line guider that goes back and forth to wind the line evenly?
Answer: Yes it does. Good reel for the money. Line counter is accurate
Answer: yes level wind
Answer: YES IT DOES. THATS THE "LEVELWIND"
Answer: yes
Answer: Yes
Q:
How much line will fill this reel?
Answer: The Magda pro reel has a line capacity of (yds/lbs) - 290/14 , 230/18 , 210/20
Q:
How tall is this reel from the bottom of the reel foot to the top of the line counter?
Answer: I have the 15 and it is 3 1/4 inches.
Product reviews of Okuma MA-20DLXT New Magda Linecounter Reel
Amazon Customer : Excellent.
Excellent value for money, its weight is according to its size.
Adam Huerta : Did not work
Literally only lasted 1 cast then reel seized up. Good thing I had another rod and reel so my whole Father’s Day wasn’t a total loss. Thanks for Amazing customer service at Amazon I’m getting refunded.
s00cherry : Magda
Seem much better built than older Magda reels.
Dan W. : Bad star drag
I ordered 2 of these Okuma MA-30DLXT New Magda Linecounter Reel reels to use lake trolling with downriggers so I can be more sure of how much line is out behind the boat without counting "pulls" off the real and estimating total feet of line that's out. I was a little disappointed at how large the reels were when I unpackaged them but was willing to use them anyway. I loaded up a bunch of line on the first reel and started adjusting the star drag when I discovered the drag didn't work enough to even retreive the line that was on the floor. There was "zero" drag. I tried loosening and tightening the star control but nada. I finally gave in and sent them both back for a refund. The seller was very good about taking them back. I gave them 2 stars because they are a nice reel if the drag worked. I wound up buying two Abu Garcia Max DLC low profile reels with line counters for a little more money and I'm happy so far with how they both work.
Stan : Purchased 2 MA15DXT-T both will only go in free spool ...
Purchased 2 MA15DXT-T both will only go in free spool part time fishing alone this is a problem trolling.. Out of time to send back to Amazon otherwise they would be gone.
Amazon Addict : Good reel
Good reel.
Michelle : Broken right out of the box
Broken right out of the box. The spool does not spin at all when you turn the crank.
Alex : Don’t trust ????
Depth counter doesn’t work.
Kelly : Reel is smooth but line counter sucks!!
Use this reel for small bottom fishing. Reel itself is pretty good but I got this reel specifically for the line counter n within 3 months it broke down! Wish the line counter was as good as the reel but I guess not! Guess the return policy is only 1 month. If not please let me know if still can return or change line counter
POETFM : Good product
The Magda 20 is a compact fairly smooth operating line counter. The drag may be a bit sticky from time to time on the 1st run of a fish. Smooth after that with a great retrieve ratio.
Travis F. : I actually bought 2 Okuma spinning reels a year ago and liked them so much that I bought this
This is a very dependable reel for the price. I use it for near shore/ off shore fishing in Florida. I have had it for about 3-4 months and it has held up well. This reel compares to the more expensive Penn reels. I actually bought 2 Okuma spinning reels a year ago and liked them so much that I bought this. You will not be disappointed at this price point.
Jack : I wanted to like it but...
The reel is a decent reel. The problem I have is with Okuma and their warranty. One of the reels I purchased starting having problems after 2 months, their warranty is one year but you have to pay for shipping to their repair center at $8.95. 20% of the cost of something to have it fixed under a warranty. This would be the equivalent of purchasing a new car at $30k and having to pay $6k for them to repair something that broke on it regardless of how much the repair cost.
Amazon Customer : Excellent.
Excellent value for money, its weight is according to its size.
JOHNBOY2017 : perfect
just as described, and will buy again
Dan C. : Poor quality
Nice size reel too bad the quality is horrible. The drag is almost un-adjustable
Julien H. : Great product
Great reel at great deal smaller but effective
Martin : OK for the money but not what they used to be
I have been using these reels as an affordable option on lake trolling setups for salmon and trout fishing for going on two decades. Bought these new ones to add a few more to my arsenal since I have now have a bigger boat. Overall I am satisfied but certainly not wowed. The older Magda Pro 20’s I have seem to be of better construction and operate more consistently. The aesthetics of the current model is more stylish and the handle fits better in my hand, but this is only better than the prior design if you consider more plastic to be an improvement. Operation has been compromised by what appear to be changes made to reduce manufacturing costs. The free spool lever jams frequently requiring the retrieve handle to be moved to reposition the spool to permit it to be engaged, which is a wicked PITA when letting out line. Also the drag adjustment is tight, even when adjusted all the way out there is considerable drag pressure on the spool such that it can’t be set to allow a fish to easily take line after a strike, and the two new reels don’t work the same in this regard, both are tight but one is worse than the other.
Has me considering replacing them with something else but any reasonable alternative would cost two to three times more money, so I rate this good value for the $$$ but far from spectacular. Functional, barely, but that’s about it.
StPete : Reelly Works
Reel is as described, shipped on time, packaging good, initial quality inspection looks to be very good on all mechanical features. Counter is accurate, but can't speak to drag limits. Maybe 4-5 stars if after a year or five of use and proper care the reel stills functions properly in all aspects and has no corrosion issues.
Amazon Customer : Trolling Muskie 3 to 6 mph, NO PROBLEM
Nice trolling reel, using them to troll Muskie. Not top of the line but also not a $200 reel. For $50 to $60 I am more than happy with these reels and they are having no issues trolling 10” jakes, bull dawgs, believers, double 10’s, anything I have tried at 3 to 6 mph. My abu 6500 didn’t last one trip brand new, blew out the anti reverse and was toast within a couple hours for comparison. That meant the handle would reel backward letting all line out without me holding on to handle to stop it. Trip was done. Bought these instead, been using all year and have no issues. I’m actually surprised how far I can cast these being a trolling reel. I can cast just as far as even my curado but again I am using giant baits. No your not going to cast a small rapala very far. But I would use these in a min for sucker fishing under a bobber. I have been lazy and used these here and there for casting when a certain bait is already tied on these and don’t feel like changing the bait over to my casting rods.
POETFM : Good product
The Magda 20 is a compact fairly smooth operating line counter. The drag may be a bit sticky from time to time on the 1st run of a fish. Smooth after that with a great retrieve ratio.
Steve : High quality dependable!
I've used this reel before and it is a reliable reel. Very durable, has a good retrieval rate, lightweight!
Jason L. : Reel
Great reel for all types of fishing
Amazon Customer : I wish I could return these
Initially these reels performed ok for me but after one full season I can submit a better review. I only have one out of 4 of these still in service because the other three have failed due to broken gears, retainers, levelwind, and drag problems. In a nutshell I would only recommend these to someone using them in a light duty application. I troll divers and catch big fish and these are simply not a good option for this type of fishing. One big run of a fish is all that's needed to gut these reels out. Maybe fishing light lures for walleye you may love um but I cannot recommend them for targeting fish over 10lbs. When my last one gives out I'm just throwing them away because they arent worth fixing.
ray lavasseur : Five Stars
good price great product!!
Mike : Hard to beat for the money
Hard to beat for the money. Used flawlessly trolling for salmon.
StPete : Reelly Works

Mike Smith : A Great Deal at a Great Price
Great quality reel at an awesome price. I purchased one of these for my wife and will be purchasing another for myself very soon. Works great and very smooth.
Mark Hudson : Four Stars
So far so good! Have only used it 1 time.
jenesaisquoi : Great Lakes Trolling Reel
I have a few of the MA-30DXT reels and they are the standard for trolling on Lake Erie. The DXT line is the updated version of the Magda Pro. The line counter is great, and they are smooth and reliable. There aren't any viable less expensive options than the Okuma Magda Pro line. They are the best trolling reel you can buy for the money.
marknett : OK reel
I am not really impressed with this reel. When you let the line out , mist of the time you have to help it free spool. I oil the reel but it did not help. When I am trolling , I usually let the boat speed pull the line off the reel. This is using crank baits. I also have a diawa 17 accudepth and (2) 27 accudepth's. I MUCH prefer these reels. I like the 17 best because it is not as bulky. In fact, I just ordered another one to replace this reel.
Tom Ellison : Line counter
Very nice reel for the money
Marlin & Amy Cornelius : Ok for the money. You get what you pay for
Free spool feature is very stiff.
warfrat : Four Stars
worked great, good price, use for kokanee
lilkoda : Great buy for the money.
Bought two of these to use on a striper fishing trip this year, and they performed flawlessly. Primarily used them for trolling Captain Mack umbrella rigs and caught up to 5 stripers at once without a single failure. I will be buying smaller versions to use for live bait fishing before I go again.
Bob : Five Stars
Looks and feels like high quality. Too much ice and snow here to use it yet.
josh : Great reel for the price
This reel might not satisfy a pro with it’s plastic components but for anyone looking for a good reel with a line counter for trolling, this hits the nail on the head. I could not be happier with it after a month of use.
Amazon Customer : It works great on striped bass
I have been using the Okuma levelwind line counter #15 for 2 years. It works great on striped bass. My largest on this reel was 30 pounds. The drag worked perfect.
John G.
Darnell : Solid reels
Good product
Carey Vandenberg : Nice working real but the counter is a bit finicky
On several occasions the counter didn't work and I had to push the button, real it in a bit, push the button again, before it started working again. That is my only complaint. Other than than, a nice reel.
Joe : Good price
Nice for the price

RowdyR : Online pictures just don’t work
Size of reel is hard to decipher with an online photo. Used it a few times and It is a well built reel for the price, but was just too large for the type of fish I was targeting it with. Downsized to a Penn Warfare 15LW which was more in line of what I needed.
Eric Brady : Bought 2 counters did not work w either.
Bought 2 of these. Counters did not work on either. I had no line on them. So it maybe my fault. Tried my other line counters and had no problems. Also bought the Okuma trolling rods. They seem really nice and am keeping them but the reels went back.
Amazon Customer : This mother have not given my refund
It was not check out correctly, it was defective out of the box as soon as I start to reel it I knew it was bad
Andy : Line counter stopped working
I like the reel itself a lot has good drag and smooth retrieve. The only reason giving it 3 stars is because the line counter stopped working after about 3 trips and I make sure I wash it off after each time. The reel itself still works well but the main reason I got it stopped working.
