Derek : Great feature, takes some practive to use effectively.

Got this troller reel at a good discount from Amazon warehouse. Description said there was a "slight imperfection" but I could find no evidence of this. Appears the box had been opened but the reel had clearly never been used. I suppose you could use this reel for bait casting, but its really just for trolling. I didn't measure the line counter for accuracy but for me this misses the point: as long as I get the bait to the same set back each time, that is all that counts. Counter is easy to use. Love the fact that you can set the free spool to automatically re-engage when you release the button. Handy when using a manual downrigger (I only have two hands!). Reel beeps at a couple meters and again when the bait reaches the tip of your rod when you are retrieving line. Star drag takes a little getting use to and seems to go from full on to full off in less than one rotation. Spool tension is hard to get right and avoid line tangle but my other bait casters are the same. Don't exceed the line length you put on drum or your last few meters may not reel up properly. There were essentially no instructions that came with the reel except how to use the line counter - there are good videos online to help.

The counter isn't very accurate. I installed leadcore line on mine and when 30 feet of it is out, the counter reads more, 38 to 40 feet. Tried ever setting available and doesn't change a thing.

I purchased two Abu Garcia Max DLC Low Profile Baitcast Fishing Reels after returning two new Okuma Mag30s because of faulty drag mechanism. I'm really pleased with the Abu Garcia's so far. I use them trolling behind downriggers in the 150 mile long lake where I live. I was tired of counting line "pulls" to know when I have 135 feet of line out before even lowering the downrigger balls. These Abu reels seem to be working out very well so far. They are low profile for a line counter reel and are pretty light weight to handle. Also, the drag controls work and the drags are pretty smooth. I don't know how accurate the conters are and don't really care because they get me in the ball park quickly and I'm fishing without taking forever to pull 18" of line 90 to 95 times for each rod every time I put them back in the water. If I'm not catching fish when the counters say 135 ft I'll change the distances until I"m boating fish again then I know what counter numbers to always use.
