Questions about OKUMA Coldwater Wireline High Speed Trolling Reel
Q:
Is this a decent saltwater reel for mahi, wahoo, etc?
Answer: We have never used it for salt water we live on the lake. We do sell them in our Tackle Shop for $130 including shipping
Answer: This reel is constructed to hold up to those conditions. The higher speed gear ratio would also be an advantage for those faster fish. The only dis-advantage that you would have is the levelwind when using this offshore fishing. The levelwind will always be the weak link in any conventional reel regardless of manufacturer. If you are set on a levelwind reel, then this will be fine, you just need to know that this particular function may need servicing every couple years if you are catching some big fish. Everything else should be great for your application.
Q:
Does this reel come with left hand retreive option?
Answer: the 553 is only available in right hand retrieve.
Q:
Can I cast with with this? If so, how well?
Answer: Have not even considered casting with it. I bought it for fishing halibut where we live. So far thoroughly pleased with the reel.
Answer: I wouldn’t recommend it , if your casting I would use one of the smaller series . We use this reel for long lead core or long copper line .
Answer: The Cold Water 553 is a large capacity reel used mostly for trolling applications. It does have a really good freespool which would allow for smooth casting but the size of the reel would make it hard.
Q:
¿Es Funcional para agua salada?
Answer: Tambien es funcional en agua salada. Se recomiende limpiar con agua dulce despues de usar en agua salada para prolonger la vida del carrete.
Q:
What is the ratio? How many bearings
Answer: The CW-553ls has a 4.7:1 gear ratio and features 3bearing.
Answer: www.okumafishing.com/en/product/Coldwater-Line-Counter-Reel/coldwater-line-counter.html
Q:
Would this make a good bank fishing reel for catfishing?
Answer: The CW-553 reel is a large reel which would be difficult to cast. it is designed for wireline and trolling applications.
Answer: It could, but the reel comes with a line counter that is not necessary for bank fishing.
Q:
Is this intended to be used with wire line?
Answer: THe CW-553 reel would make a great wire line reel.
Answer: I don't think so, even I am not using wire on it.
Answer: That’s what it’s advertised for but I use braided poly line.
Q:
whats the max drag weight
Answer: The CW-553ls trolling reel has a max drag of 22lbs.
Answer: I read somewhere but I can't find it that the max drag was 22 pounds
Q:

Q:
What is the max drag on this reel? Can I use it in saltwater?
Answer: The max drag for the CW-453DS reel is 20lbs.
Answer: Not sure of the exact max drag, but i have only used it in salt water and its my favorite reel i have.
Answer: 20 lbs. of drag. Yes you can.
Answer: 20 pounds , yes for saltwater
Q:
Can i put 50 pound mono on reel and how much yards i can get from this reel
Answer: Yes it will take 50 lbs mono, you probably will get about 250 yards
Answer: I've got about 350 yards of steel backing, and another 200 yards of 9 strand weighted steel. So ima go with at least 500 yards.
Answer: Look up the reel you are interested in and look at the mono capacities for the various pound ratings.ore importantly look at the line diameters. If your mono diameter matches one of those listed you’ll get the same amount of yours on it regardless of the strength rating. Otherwise you’ll have to guess based on the closest match.
Answer: I don't think it would be a problem but can't say how many yards of 50 lb mono it will hold
Q:
Would a person be able to take the line counter off this reel? Because I really don’t need any bigger reel than this one for the fishing I do
Answer: No,linecounter isn’t removable, but doesn’t really take up much room. These are great reels for the money!
Answer: You can disable the counter by removing the transmission gear.
Q:
What best CW reel for 10 colors of leadcore line?
Answer: cw-453D has the capacity to hold 10 colors of leadcore.
Q:
does it have line counter? In the picture is not shown
Answer: If you look closely at the picture, the reel shown is the 553, which does not have the line counter. Both 453 models have a line counter.
Answer: This reel does not have a line counter
Answer: No line counter...amazing reel though, would highly recommend it.
Answer: The CW453DS does not. The CW453D does however.
Answer: no
Answer: Yes it does
Q:
Will this work with braided line & halibut?
Answer: This reel has a large line capacity and will work great with braid. It works for halibut but a low gear ratio is usually preferred.
Answer: I have mine loaded with 80lb braid and it works fine with one exception. I have a semiheavy rod with tip roller and the braid is thin enough to sometimes jump the roller and snag between the roller and ferrule frame. Easy to clear but keep on top of it to prevent braid fray.
