BPT Stop 2 - Lake Conroe 2024

fishing user avatarJrob78 reply :

Day 1 started this morning. The groups from last week are the same but they reversed the starting order. Group A now goes day 2 and 4 and group B goes days 1 and 2. Conroe is cold and muddy right now but will warm up through the week. Expect some big prespawn fish. Live coverage starts at 10am central time.

Looking forward to seeing how stop 2 plays out.

The first stop was pretty exciting.

Brent Ehrler is already at 23lbs a couple of hours in. I wouldn't be surprised if someone caught a 13lb+ this week.

He's a heart-breaker the few times I've picked him over at BASS.

Should be called the Strader and Lee show. Between the two of them they've been hogging all the action. Seems a bit of a shame that the first two days don't count for anything and the guys that have done well today won't fish hard on their second day, but I guess it's just the nature of the game.

fishing user avatarJrob78 reply :

Group 2 is going today and guess who is in the early lead? Jordan Lee. Lol, he is unstoppable right now.

I have caught a lot of fish out of pipes in various lakes or right where they empty into the lake at.

It's like rip rap, If I see it I'll stop and fish it

That was an amazing buzzer beater for him.  How frustrating would that be if you couldn't get it in the boat fast enough?

fishing user avatarMSWV reply :

How bout James Watson throwing a buzz bait?  Kinda surprising to me..

fishing user avatarTim Kelly reply :

I don't know. I've followed the action for a bit the last two days, and it's nice to see people catching and the coverage is quite good, but when it's all completely meaningless I just can't really care. You're following the leaders, who will inevitably barely bother fishing on the second day because there's no need to beat their fish up as long as they get a top 20 position. What am I not getting?

fishing user avatarHeyCoach reply :

Jordan Lee is on fire right now. It wouldn’t surprise me if he finished in the top 10 in this tournament and then won the Classic in Knoxville coming up in a few weeks.

fishing user avatarbasseditor reply :

I’m going to Conroe on Thursday to check it out first hand.

He throws Topwater everywhere, it seems to be his confidence bait no matter what.

They have to keep catching fish.  With this format it's not that hard for someone to have a monster day and move up.  An angler could be in 10th place overall but only 2 pounds ahead of the cut so it wouldn't take much at all to get booted out.  The entertainment for me with the elimination rounds is watching the battle for guys making the cut.  The entire field is full of big names so it's a big deal watching the guys fighting to get in the top 20.

fishing user avatarTim Kelly reply :

Yeah, I get that, but struggle to get excited about fishing for 20th place.

fishing user avatarTeam9nine reply :

The only difference with MLF is that there is now focus on some of these other positions and not just the leaders. Otherwise, it’s no different.

Guys near the top of the leaderboard in other circuits routinely lay off their fish or “go practicing” as both a fish conservation strategy and a way to try and expand their main bite. Clunn even stated he nearly lost the St. John’s event because he pulled off his fish around lunch the first day thinking he had enough to be sitting good for the day.

Also, guys are constantly struggling trying to make the Day 3 cut in other events, usually around 50th place. The circuits have just never cared to focus on that aspect in most events. The only difference is that now, MLF has chosen to cover all this as part of the drama, and not just a ‘leaders only’ type focus.

fishing user avatarTim Kelly reply :

Yes, you're right, but the trouble being that the weights getting wiped after the first two days makes everything about the top places worthless and the only passing interest is who has or hasn't made the top 20. If their weights carried forward it would be interesting, as it is in the best 5 formats, but with the weights wiped, meh.

fishing user avatarTeam9nine reply :

Going to be different for everyone. One of the best tournaments ever (IMHO) was the old BASS Megabucks. Everyone fished to make the final cut of 10 guys, and then they zeroed the weights, moved them to a new section of water no one had been able to fish and let them go at it. It helped make Larry Nixon a legend. It was different and exciting, and I think MLF is the closest thing going to that style format...I’m a fan.

fishing user avatarTim Kelly reply :

That sounds like a great format. I really enjoy the MLF TV shows and have subscribed from the beginning. I like the idea of the weights being wiped on the last days and a new body of water, or section. For me though, the current BPT format needs refining.

fishing user avatarjbsoonerfan reply :

I look at this format like a tournament. The first round a certain number advances. All you have to do is advance. Same with the next round. Advance and survive. Then in the final round it's winner take all. The NCAA tournament would be pretty boring if the teams just kept their score from the previous game. This levels the playing field and gives everyone a chance in the end. If you were going to keep the weights then there would be no need to cut the field, just let them all fish till there was a winner on day 5 or 6 or whatever.

fishing user avatarJrob78 reply :

They have to cut the weights after the initial qualifying rounds are over. The 2 groups fish on different days that potentially have different conditions. For example, if the weather is ugly on days 1 and 3 and nice on days 2 and 4 the weights could be quite different. It wouldn't be fair for the days 1 and 3 guys to have to compete with the weights of the days 2 and 4 guys because they could be very different. At the first tournament the final day was on a completely different lake, zeroing the weights keeps everyone on an even playing field.

fishing user avatarjbsoonerfan reply :

Wesley Strader hung up in the trees.........I can relate.

So why even watch before the last day if your only interested in seeing the guys in the first few places catch fish?

They are fishing for a chance at Saturday, where the weights are zeroed.

Jordan Lee barely made the cut, knocked out his brother and ended up winning the 1st event.

Todd Faircloth and IKE were both inside the cut until the last few minutes then the agony of defeat set in

These cuts determine who gets a check and who goes home broke.

I found there to be a lot of entertaining drama on the cut days.

But I'll watch 2 teams in last place play if it has the possibility of being a good game

fishing user avatarTim Kelly reply :

It's the two days fishing for 20th, and the second day the guys who did well in day one barely fishing that spoils it for me. One day fishing for 20th I'd be fine with.

Have you ever competed in anything that has a cutoff to make it to the next round?  There's plenty to be excited about, especially when you get a fresh start in that next round.

fishing user avatarGReb reply :

The format is great. It allows guys to make a couple mistakes early and rewards those who consistently find fish in the end

If the weights kept carrying over then there would only be focus on a few anglers as the rest would be too far behind to catch up and I don't see the enjoyment in that.  Not only that but it wouldn't be as fair since not all 80 are fishing in the same conditions each day.  Starting the weights over when they move on to the next round keeps it an even playing field.

fishing user avatarOCdockskipper reply :

Here are my unasked-for suggestions to the current BPT tour:

1) Fish 3 different lakes each tournament (or sections of a lake).  Day 1 & 2 on Lake A, Day 3 on Lake B and Day 4 on Lake C.  This way there is no incentive to "save fish" for a latter part of the tournament;

2) Reward finishing higher during prelims, whether it be cash or advantages in later rounds;

3) Set up the tour to hit certain lakes & certain areas every year at the same time.  Golf, Tennis and other individual sports do this.  It will cut down on the need for prefishing, there will be a familiarity to each event.

It would be cool to have the equivalent of what golf has for Majors.  I think it's interesting how often I find similarities between the BPT and golf.

I think Ike may be done with the BPT soon after what he just got done saying on air.  Said he doesn't care if he makes the cut and that he can then spend more time with his family.  Said the schedule is stupid.  Yikes.

Yeah, that was pretty bad. He might not have known he was live but that's 2 weeks in a row of him saying something he shouldn't have.

I didn't think the swearing was all that big of deal but talking trash about the league that's paying you is a bad idea.  That's the kind of stuff that should be kept internal with the league.

With his attitude being what it is that sounds like a good reason not to buy any products he endorses.

fishing user avatarTfrossi reply :

I like the idea of majors as well, maybe the could incorporate the existing cup events

(Challenge, summit, world) as majors and continue to use the selects as a way to qualify for the majors.  This would create one cohesive tourleague and everything would be done live, eliminating the 6 month tape delay cup events have now.  When the Superbowl was on a couple of weeks ago I watched it then, I didn 't record it to watch in October.

fishing user avatarRpratt reply :

I have money that says if Ike would have made the cut, then it would not be stupid or he would leave the BPT. It probably is a bad feeling that he got knocked out two times in a row at the cut line. But that's part of the game and honestly to me part of the excitement that things can change right down to the wire in MLF.

I don't see anything happening.  I was exaggerating a bit but I know I'd be very upset with Ike if I were the BPT.
