the sunshine showdown on the harris chain of lakes is taking place this weekend and im kinda excited all the experts are expecting huge fish catches and huge bags does anyone have any predictions? i think that either preston clark or terry stroggins will win dean rojas might have a good tournament too with the frog maybe
Small bags and tough fishing....and Harris is not known for its frog bite. The weather here is going to be rough for the next few days.
o really? the guys on bassmaster are predicting record breaking fishing im from PA so if i think of florida i think of frogs and big fish wow im way off well who do u think will have a good tournament?
A few monsters will be caught off beds, but with rain on Friday and cold/windy after that there will probably be fewer limits. My club fished Harris 2 months ago and not many boats weighed anything in. The weather was horrible, but I've always thought Lake Harris was a tough place to fish.
My only prediction in this tournament is whoever wins, they're preferred bait of choice will probably be an ugly looking crankbait.
Quoteo really? the guys on bassmaster are predicting record breaking fishing im from PA so if i think of florida i think of frogs and big fish wow im way off well who do u think will have a good tournament?
They always predict "record breaking" fishing now. I think maybe Peter T. will have a good tournament.
Terry Scroggins
Me thinks it is going to be one of the Florida boys... The weather is supposed to turn really cruddy here after having a gorgeous week..
QuoteTerry Scroggins
Thats a good choice he is always good in Florida. But I have a system this year. I pick Van Dam every time. So I know I will at least get one or two tournaments right.
QuoteTerry Scroggins
my choice , because i know where he's fishin
The big bags will come from Harris cranking offshore..If they can find shell bars with a mix of eel grass the bags will be 20 lbs, but most of those guys are going to try and flip...either Peter T or KVD would be my favorite because they will work offshore most of the time.
Takahiro Omori
I wish they had the blog again like the Classic. Im sitting at work wishing I could hit the refrest button ever 20 minutes.
QuoteSmall bags and tough fishing....and Harris is not known for its frog bite. The weather here is going to be rough for the next few days.
well said lee. a frog bite is not gonna happen on harris. if it does, it will be a surprise. this tourny will be won in the canals or at the openings where the lake meets the canals. i'm with you lee it will be tough. the florida boys should do well, scroggins has a great chance.
Just read that they are not expecting big bags any longer...due to an unexpected cold front as it seems.
As for the canals, it appears a lot of good limits were caught there in past tourneys, but they have been doing a lot of work on them.
Any local here has Info on the water level ?
Max
yeah water level=low ...but fishin is fine, although for the front coming through, it may be tough. either the winner is gonna pull some huge bedding fishies from.. :-X.. or someones gonna pull a huge bag shallow crankin. i'm :-X because i know where boyd duckett, scroggins, g-man and Omori are fishin, my buddy 'accidently' pulled a 8lber in front of them..
wow a 8lber in front of guys entering a BASS Elite tourney .... That gotta hurt !
So the water level is low, which leads me to believe that the canals should be less accessible, and fewer fish are likely to be there too.
You guys still have enough bedding fish to let somebody target them specifically..cause I thought the spawn happens earlier in Sunshine state ?
Do you think there's already postspawn bass deeper ? And do you think someone could get away with deep postspawn bass ?
how about that 10 pounder!!??
Max,
Canals in Florida are mostly manmade and typically deeper than the surrounding lakes. 9th st canal will most likely produce a winning bag. Also the canals in Lake Griffin have been recently dredged and have hard bottoms, for the guys willing to make a long run it will probably pay off.
As for the spawn, well in Fla it starts in January and ends sometimes in April. I have seen bedding fish for the last 6 weeks but my bigger fish have come from staging areas. Flats in 4-6 ft of water between deeper water and shallow bedding areas.
as fishindaddy said, the accessible canals are still holding plenty of fish and the spawn is still goin on. espicially where i said those pros are fishing. im going out tommorrow to see who all are fishin my spots. ANYONE ELSE GONNA BE OUT THERE??
everyone picked stroggins but he isnt doing great and my closes guest was rojas who is currently 4th
it is not over yet smallie king. the weather is gonna be brutal today and tomorrow.
lee-9th street canal is where a decent bag is gonna come from. i also believe that deep ridge in harris is gonna produce a nice sack. we'll see.

I may have missed on the anglers but I got the weight right......For Saturday I would say no more than 2 bags over 15 and Sunday with the front those fish are going to get lockjaw....BAD....I would bet half of those professionals don't catch a limit....
Dean moved back up to forth after day 3 heres the the leaderboard after days 3 http://proxy.espn.go.com/outdoors/bassmaster/members/ldr/leaderboard?tournamentId=830
Do the pros get an exemption to weigh-in 12" fish instead of the Florida regs of 14"?
:-?
hmm idk i always thought that they had to follow the state and lake regualations
Now that it's down to 13 who y'all picking?
I think a 10 pound lead is a lot to over come

I thought B.A.S.S sanctionned tournaments had to comply with local fishing regulations too, but I also found like 2 or 3 bass that were weighed were fairly small...
But I'm sure I'm wrong cause B.A.S.S knows the rules and I trust Mr Weldon on the issue.
Still Jason Quinn had two fish on Day 3, that went 1lbs11oz.
And Brian Easler on the co-angler side had a 0lbs12oz on day 3 too.
Still better than nothing ! ;)
BTW congrats to the Lane Family ! Bobby in third place and his bro in 5th. Not to mention Robert Lane on the co-angler side. Nice fishing legacy in the family ! 8-)
I hope Snowden wins it. I like him.
Are we able to watch weigh-ins as a basic member, or must we be a Bass Insider?
I am looking ahead to 3:30 for weigh-ins
Just curious?
Referring to the "Hooked Up" section.
Seems like it's loading- at 3:10- but before was just a white screen- we'll see.
naw i been watching it for the past two days yesterday it was slow and bassmaster unversity never came on but the weight in came on right on time so just wait maybe
It comes on, and I see the 40th anniversary sign at 3:20
We'll see.
yea if it isnt up by 3:40 refresh the page that might do it
Working
yea im watching it too
BRIAN SNOWDEN is fumbling on the final day!!!!!!
WOW Brian Swoden just got skunked on the last day ... what a shock after those tree great days for him.
It's over !
MIKE MCCLELLAND takes the victory ! 2008 winner of the Sunshine Showdown ....
Yeah I was pullin for Bobby Lane (fantasy team), but I also like Mike.
yea thats too bad congrads to the lane brothers finishing 3rd and 4th and they should both do very very good next week at kissimee
What a way to lose.....he'd been catching them so good. It happens like that sometimes. I'm glad McClelland won it, he's been thru a lot in his life. Heck of a nice guy too.
Man! McClelland wins one every year! He's good
yea im betting he is going to get another one this year he will win it on the jig
10 of the top 12 were throwing Texas Rigged plastic
Snowden has a bad habit of blowing leads going into the final day, I know he did it a couple times in the Elite 50's tourney's a few years ago. This goes to show, even pro's get skunked, even KVD did it on the final day in a tourney in 2005 when he had the lead.
QuoteDo the pros get an exemption to weigh-in 12" fish instead of the Florida regs of 14"?:-?
Over the weekend, I had 3 fishing friends confirm that B.A.S.S. does give a 12" exemption while fishing in Florida.
Lame

I was watching the weigh-ins live on the internet and I saw a 10 and 11 oz bass brought in by co-anglers. I don't know if I could of swallowed my pride and bring it to the scales.
Like most Floridians, I can eyeball a 14" fish and know if it's legal or not within a quarter inch or less. But I'd probably have to measure every fish below that to know if it's 12" or not.
It's surprising that B.A.S.S. allows the exemption. I wonder why they do it.? To create more limits and more excitement?
well if it is true, that kinda sucks !
I know that Florida have different regulations depending on where you are.
@Jaskoh : Did you see what two fish Jason Quinn brought to the weigh-in too ? Two bass for a total of 1lb11oz .... that's small !

are you kidding me? when the fishing is tough, a 12 inch fish or 10 ounces could mean the difference between winning and losing. cashing a check or going home broke. i will swallow my pride every time when there is money on the line. you must not tournament fish with that statement.
@bocabasser,
I think he was referring to the fact that's it sort of useless to bring that sole micro-sized bass to the weigh-in if you know you're already out of contention.
Like say, you're 15 pounds behind, and you just have one 11ozer to show.
I guess, I would still show it, for the sake of tournament fishing .... and to give my friends something to have a good laugh about !

It's about points too.
Yes the pros get exemptions to catch 12" bass but that permit also allows them to bring in more than one fish over 22". it would suck if you had to throw back a huge fish cause you already had a huge fish!?!

Yep. Funny thing is not all Florida anglers know the 22" rule. I haven't personally seen it, but I've heard of people being DQ'd for bringing too many 22" fish to the scales.
DOH! ;D

Prime example was Classic in Pittsburgh. If you caught 3 ,12 inch fish a day you woudld have been in the Super 6.

There is no "swallowing pride" for the pros. Whats wrong with a 12 inch fish??? Its better than no fish, just ask Brian Snowden.

fo sho
and all that sort of thing.
oh, and yes, 12" and the limit of one over 22" exemptions are given at many tournaments in fl, and certainly the major ones.
