Mosquito Lake Ohio 2024

fishing user avatarsmallieking reply :

I have a bass tournament this year at mosquito lake just outside warren ohio in may. im planning on taking the week off work to get out there and practice.

from looking at maps on the net it looks like a shallow weedy lake. am i correct on this assumption?

Does any one have any experience fishing this lake? any help would be greatly appreciated..

fishing user avatarcyclops2 reply :

Shallow & weedy lake. In early spring?  Going to be a parking lot on each weed clump.   GPS On a paper map all the biggest weed beds With holes under them. The draw the best path to them with the least driving time.  The guys should stir the place up if it is shallow enough.

fishing user avatarVrybusy reply :

Any suggestions on local Hotels/places to stay near Mosquito?

fishing user avatarsmallieking reply :

i see theres a mosquito state park so im planning on camping there. theres alot of towns/cities nearby so im sure theres a ton of hotels in the area.

If you go to mosquito go to Montys to a staple for duck hunters its in Mecca township, order a burger it's basically heaven. Or go in the morning and get breakfast. All I know as far as the fishing is the shad are about 3 inches long. There is a shallow road bed like 150 yards from the launch off the first point I believe fish it. It is a shallow lake and has a lot of weeds. I hear there are a lot of mixed bags coming from there as well. I dont fish it that much but when I do it was worth the trip. About 30 minuets from my dads house. I would fish it once before the tourny if you can.

Thanks!

Any time I know any lake around Youngstown really so if you need any other advise on lakes in that area.

fishing user avatarMegastink reply :

I've walked it's shores and that's it. Beautiful lake. Tons of grass and baitfish. Enjoy!

fishing user avatarMatthew2000 reply :

It really is a very nice lake I wish I could fish it more often.

fishing user avatar5fishlimit reply :

It's a nice lake to fish.  The shallow road bed is a good place to start, but in May you are not going to have too many weeds to fish.  There's a bridge that cuts the lake in half, and if you fish along the riprap you will at least get your limit.  Near the southern end of the lake is an area that will get to about 25 FOW, and you can crank or dropshot that section to get your kicker.

I have a small club tournament at Mosquito on April 26th, so I can give you some feedback afterwards.

I also have a tournament there at the end of May. Hopefully I can get there sooner to figure the lake out a little! I'll definitely be following this post.

Ill let you know what i get figured out there in early may. i took some time off work to go there prior to my tournament

fishing user avatarFishinCop646 reply :

That would be greatly appreciated!

The lake is 8-miles long, and its widest part is abount 1-mile.There are alot of coves around the lakeAnd most of the campsites are on the west side of lake. The park(west side&southern-end) has very nice boat docks. There are alot of boat lauches around lake. The dam(southern end) is aout 25-30 feet deep but majority of lake is somewhere between 5-8 feet deep.I would say it is a walleye, pike lake. But they have alot of weed-beds through-out summer all around lake. The lake has unlimited hp for boats, and has alot of people through out the warm weather,(jet-skis,water skis, etc) The lake is a muddy color, perhaps because of the activity there. You should go early, because there are so many areas to bass fish along the shores,(boat is a must).nothern end of lake has a protected zone for wild-life,but rt 88 crosses lake and has the best chance i think to fish shore areas for bass.(alot of nice weed beds, cover areas logs, stumps etc.Good luck, and they dont call it Mosquito for nothing.................

fishing user avatarsammy4248 reply :

Get ahold of me through message. I have just about every obstacle in that lake marked

fishing user avatarEJVH3 reply :

If you think you are fishing too shallow...you probably are not fishing shollow enough. That is the best advice I can give you about Mosquito Lake.

fishing user avatarsmallieking reply :

any advice on how to catch better than average fish? i hear from alot of ppl that the lake is full of bass but only takes 14-15 lb to win.

The word is that ODNR electro-fished Mosquito and moved some of the larger fish to other lakes like Berlin, Milton, and West Branch.  I was just there this past Sunday, and caught more northerns than I did bass.

Everyone that I have talked to that's fished it so far this year had a tough time, too.  The size of the fish in Mosquito seem like they are all just barely legal size.  If you can land a 15lb bag you had a good day on this lake.

Anyone fish Mosquito this weekend? Wondering if the water is warming up yet. Thinking of coming out in a few weeks.

I just had a small club tournament this past weekend - the winner had just over 9lbs on a 5 fish bag.  The water temps were about 47 to 49 degrees on the waters I fished south of the causeway and down to the State Park ramps on over to the dam.  I had fished it the weekend prior, and the water temps were 56 degrees.  The week of cold weather has really cooled that lake off a good bit.  I was hooking into northern pike more than I was LMB - on both weekends.

I only had 1 keeper, and a good number of short fish on Sunday (4/26).  I am thinking that in May the lake should be hopping as the bass are in the spawn/post spawn phase.  It is usually a good lake to catch numbers in, but as far as getting size I just don't think Mosquito is the place for it anymore.

fishing user avatarVrybusy reply :

Thanks for the update. I also heard that the water level is low and no grass/weeds? I might have to wait a little longer before making the trip over.

fishing user avatarsmallieking reply :

im heading out there friday to practice for a BASS nation tournament on saturday any lake updates??

I fished it On May 17th and i was a super tough bite. Try a tube and dropshot along riprap

fishing user avatarFishinCop646 reply :

Let's get back on topic. Any updates on Mosquito? I'm not going there to catch a bunch of fish, I'm going there to at least place in a tournament. Where are those bigger fish?

In Berlin LOL. The best way to place is just get 5 fish.

fishing user avatarVrybusy reply :

How are the weeds? Have they been coming up? A friend told me that it seemed like there was much more weeds last year at this time and that fishing the weed beds was what worked for him.

fishing user avatarFishinCop646 reply :

Weeds every where! I caught all my fish in a foot of water. Frogs, senkos, and a chatterbait.

fishing user avatarpabassin reply :

Has anyone fished mosquito lately?

fishing user avatarMegastink reply :

Major League Fishing just filmed there, Milton, and one other lake, I believe.

fishing user avatarNKY TRITON reply :

MLF was there last Wednesday filming. I fished the BFL and didn't do much. Had a battery go bad at 9 am that morning.

fishing user avatarBowHuntr reply :

I've got a tournament there in two weeks and was just wondering if anyone has been there recently and if you've done any good?

fishing user avatar5fishlimit reply :

I just fished it yesterday.  It was raining all day long, and the fishing was pretty tough.  There are some really heavy mats on the western side closer to the dam that I was able to pull some fish from.  I had to use a 1.5oz punch weight to get through it.

Otherwise along the old road beds are long stretches of weed beds you can flip a beaver style bait into. (suggest adding some orange to the tips)

Also, a white buzzbait worked for a good part of the morning.

fishing user avatarBowHuntr reply :

Okay, awesome! Thanks a lot. I'll let ya know how it goes.

fishing user avatarBowHuntr reply :

Ended up being a pretty rough time. There was another tournament going on at the same time as our club tournament and we were constantly fishing next to another boat. Had a little action early in the morning on a white fluke. And one bite on a brown jig at about 2 but nothing else the rest of the day unfortunately.
