Where are the Ohio Fisherman? 2024

fishing user avatarbayvalle reply :

Hey guys post up who you are and where you are located in Ohio. I feel we should try to make a push for bassresource to add a Midwest fishing forum so that we aren't lumped together with all the states in the Northeast. Let's hear your thoughts.

fishing user avatarBassman37 reply :

I hear you. I am in Illinois and we are lumped into the Northeast as well.

Seems like someone thinks the midwest is in the northeast!

fishing user avatarArobb2012 reply :

Southwest here waiting for the rivers to drop in hopes of catching a smallie or two.

fishing user avatarHower08 reply :

North east Ohio here. A Midwest section would be sweet. And hopefully not as many cry babies as a couple other forums I visit

fishing user avatarBrent Christian reply :

Im in Ky right across the river from Portsmouth And Ironton! Im game to all get together

fishing user avatarJG233 reply :

I'm part time in Ohio - tomorrow will be my first outing in the state this year. I'm also hoping to catch my first bass of the year. The weather looks like it's going to be great.

They are calling for rain this weekend so the gmr is going get higher, faster and muddier. I'm gonna try to hit the gmr by Downton Dayton here soon. I am ready to hit the mad river soon too.

fishing user avatarbayvalle reply :

Fished GMR north of Dayton Saturday and it was much more fishable. Less flow, still muddy and still no bites. I was targeting SM.

I'm fish north and south of Dayton mostly fishing lakes. How has river fishing been lately?

I'm also a part timer living in New Hampshire and going to southeastern "Ahia" in the summer. Probably going to scoot up to Erie and St Clair around July 1st, otherwise it's Seneca and Dillon for me.

My first trip was yesterday. River was slightly muddy and got worse as it rained more. I did catch 3 smallies on soft plastic craws.

Forget Seneca head to wolf run

What's the advantage of Wolf Run over Seneca? I haven't fished either one yet.

I really dislike Seneca, but my uncle camps there so it's convenient.  If it weren't for family, I'd never go back. Lots of work for a bunch of 14 inch fish. I'd much rather fish it for white bass, at least they keep me busy.

Smaller amount of water to cover and bigger fish

Yeah. I'm not a big fan of Ohio fishing, but I've only fished the southeast part of the state. I'm happy to be home fishing in New England. Water on the Quabbin and Cape always treat me well.

The se Ohio lakes have some amazing bass fishing it can be very challenging though. Generally Ohio as a whole is tough fishing but I also believe that is why the few pros from Ohio are very  successful on the big circuits

I would agree, Ohio is not a bass fishing mecca by any means (except maybe for Erie and/or AEP).  However, I will say that the tough fishing in Cincy has made me better when I travel to other parts of the country.

Bass fishing in SW Ohio is difficult but I've learned fishing off a kayak has improved the experience for me. Most of the time I'm fishing alone since my brother had a stroke.  As a result it's easier for me and gives me more flexiblity to use a kayak plus I can throw it in the back of the truck anytime I'm traveling . I have never been to AEP, can I get a kayak on those lakes?

Yes you can get a kayak into most of them.  Some are going to be a whole lot more work than others though.  You will definitely need a cart to drag the yak behind you.  We use float tubes to fish them, they are slow but a whole lot lighter and easier to hike into the remote ponds with.  It is a beautiful place for sure, just watch out for the ticks as they are really bad down there.

My avatar picture is a picture of one of the ponds down there.  I caught my PB out of that pond four years ago, it was almost 7 pounds

Yes.  Kayaking is big there, but as @Fishinbuck07 said, float tubes are more efficient. Some ponds you can drive right up to and some even have ramps but those tend to be the ponds that are highly pressured.  I've seen guys in kayaks at some of the more remote ponds but their kayaks must be a lot lighter than mine or they're in a lot better shape than me.

That's a great list of waters for fishing.

I'm just south of Dayton. I can get to Erie in 3hrs and AEP in 2 1/2 hrs. These days I fish from a Hobie Kayak while I'm in Ohio so I stay in the Harbors when fishing Erie. Since I have never been to AEP, I am curious if it be the better option for me.

AEP is a blast, it is also quiet and beautiful, it is definitely worth the trip if you ever get the chance.  If you hit it at the right time you can catch a lot of nice bass.  You may have a problem with that Hobie and the weeds in those ponds.  I use a float tube to fish down there.  A friend and I have caught some big fish out of some of those ponds, we both have caught some close to 7 pounds and many others from 3 pounds to 5 pounds.

It depends.  I'm a novice in a kayak and doubt I'd be comfortable on big water like Erie.  You may feel different.  I've had some scary times on Erie both in bass boats and on walleye charters.

Either way, I'd definitely check out AEP.  There's been a lot of rumors surrounding the place and a lot of land has already been sold off, so I'd go while you still can.  A portion has already been rebranded Jessie Owen's State Park.

There's a lot of ponds that you can easily get your kayak on without having to trek through the forest, many you can drive right up to.  The ponds you can't see from the road tend to produce better but I've also caught many 3's and 4's (and a few 5's) from the roadside ponds.

If you go to AEP, remember to print a permit (free) and I'd suggest to map out what ponds you want to hit prior to going using Google maps.  The maps at the park are terrible and the cell service is spotty at best.

Is this 31,000 acres more on top of what they purchased earlier in the year?  Or is this just saying the state finally came up with the money to purchase it finally?  I know they came to an agreement earlier in the year to purchase a bunch and they renamed that section The Jesse Owens Memorial park, but I read after the agreement that the state didn't have the money for it because the people running the wildlife and park services spent the money on things they shouldn't have.  If this is another purchase on top of what they already agreed to then the state owns almost all of it now.

I believe this is in addition to what is already known as Jessie Owen's.

Wow if so that is awesome news for outdoorsmen and women of the state of Ohio.  AEP was going to start piece selling it more than they already were.  That would have meant more out of state people buying it up for hunting leases and no one could have used all that beautiful land down there the way we are able to now.

I hope you're right.  There's a lot of people out there that are very unhappy with this deal.

I don't understand why they would be unhappy with it?  AEP was auctioning off little parcels here and there already, to private owners, meaning the public could no longer use that area.  With the state buying it we can still use it as before.  Everything I have read on the situation sounds like Dewine wants to keep it for the same uses as AEP allowed it for.  I think some people just like to have something to complain about, I for one am glad the state of Ohio bought it from them.  Somewhere down the road I could see them charging for the camping and maybe the permit, but that takes a lot of money for the upkeep of those haul roads, so I wouldn't have a problem with them charging for that stuff.  I think that is what got AEP in the long run, all the upkeep of the roads, and they really had no income coming from that land, other than the few gas and oil wells and the leases to farmers in the area.  Now I know the state may screw it up in the future but that is a wait and see thing I guess.
