Any Soft Water in MA 2024

fishing user avatarJigfishn10 reply :

With the warmer temps this past weekend and steady rain last night I can see grass again. I went by a couple of lakes and ponds in Canton this morning and only saw 1 small section in a small pond that was opening up. Anyone seeing any soft water?

fishing user avatarWanderLust reply :

Hope we'll be fishing soon. Check out my back deck... That giant snow hill is my grill. :D

Looks like the topwater tourney will have to start in June...LOL

fishing user avatartritz18 reply :

Checked one of my favorite ponds this morning during the rain hoping to see some sign of melting....instead I saw three ice fishermen on the pond. Guess it hasn't been warm enough!

fishing user avatarJigfishn10 reply :

Just went by the Res along Rte 128 in Waltham, and a section on the north end is iced out. Need some more warmer temps and rain to help it along. Today's temps went from 57* to 35* and very windy.

fishing user avatarplymouthrockbass reply :

long pond in plymouth is fishable from the boat ramp...im gonna head there in the morning before work for an hour but i dont expect to catch anything...ill try to post some pictures up

fishing user avatarFishing Rhino reply :

I checked out my favorite pond today.  Yesterday it was shore to shore ice.  Today, the entire pond is open.

What ice remains was pushed to the windward side of the pond.  That should be gone tomorrow.

I hope to get out by the weekend in my canoe.  Any takers?  If they are hungry, jigs should catch 'em.

fishing user avatarbradbass reply :

Went to the res this weekend only a few small spots with open water. Hopefully a couple of weeks and the ice will be gone!

fishing user avatarGrundleLove reply :

Went to a small pond last weekend that I frequent, Completely clear.

Started jiggin and had one on but lost it (this is my first year trying to jig..never have before.) :D

fishing user avatartritz18 reply :

You guys are so lucky, its all hard water around my part of Mass. Hoping to get out at least once this break before I head back to school Sunday. Warmer weather at the end of the week could be good.

fishing user avatarGrundleLove reply :

Side note: I'm contimplating seeing if any of us MA people want to set up a "Cabin Fever Over" fishing thing at a pond/lake as soon as the season hits. Just a friendly get together of fishin, maybe some brews and what not. Was thinking Monponsett pond.

If you are interested/have suggestions shoot me a PM just to see if the interest is there.

fishing user avatarGTrombly reply :

The merrimack is clear but there is still a few feet of snow plowed in front of the gate to the ramp.

fishing user avatarDean reply :

good thread..now if only some ponds in western mass will thaw..

Not Sawdy, but close. Devol Pond, it's a few hundred yards east of Sawdy, about one quarter the size. A half mile long and a quarter mile wide. Surrounded by private property

Large pond in the center is South Watuppa. Middle left is Stafford Pond, below Watuppa is Sawdy, and just to the right of Sawdy is Devol.

Very few people know it exists since there is no public access and only one road from which it can be seen.

Used to be a smallmouth pond 'til someone introduced largemouth about thirty years ago. No more smallies. Funny, all the other ponds in the image support both species. The home icon is where we live.

For some reason, the images are not showing up.  I'll post the url so you can click on that if they don't appear for you.

Does anyone know of any open water in Mass? Me and my friends need to fish at least once before going back to school after this weekend. Thursday and Friday are rain and slightly warmer weather. Saturday is supposed to be sunny and 50. Our local spots seem to not be making enough progress for the weekend. Any ideas?

fishing user avatarGrundleLove reply :

Yes! Just checked a few local spots and one pond is completely free where as another is creeping along! Abington Ma

Got a few people interested. Going to start a new thread on this board to officially address it . Maybe not necessarily a "tourney"...rather a fun get together with bragging rights? Also I don't think we should discriminate the non boaters who want to come, I was once in that "boat" (lol pun) not to long ago. Perhaps we can see who can come, who has a boat, and if there is room for other anglers on said boat. I have an open seat on mine, as well as a 12 foot jon boat I don't use anymore that is MORE than sea worthy some guys could use if they don't have a boat.

I'm going to get the details together from what some people have PM'd me and make a thread today/tomorrow

The Nip in Bridgewater has been open since mid week last week.  It was iced up last saturday and there were a bunch of people on there, myself included.

I went by the res in Canton this morning @ about 6:30 am and it was totally iced over. I was driving back from work @ 4:00 pm and the temps outside was 70* plus. That res is now wide open. Gotta love it. I'm going on a recon mission tomorrow to check out some more watering holes. I'll be fishing soon, guys!  :D

Excellent! I am ready for war, all the gear is tuned and I'm ready to kick some bass.

This past weekend must have helped your waters along up there GT. After Friday, there was a lot of open water in my area.

Hey Rhino, It's been 25 years but is Cook's Pond still fishable? I went to a tournament there and all anybody caught were 12" fish. It did have good access though. So. Watuppa still got those sweet smallies?

I hope so. I'll take a ride around tomorrow and take a look around. It doesn't help that my boat is in a million pieces in the garage. Started re-carpeting it this week on spring break. It is gonna take a couple more weeks to fix since everything in the boat is wrapped in carpet.

fishing user avatarJigfishn10 reply :

I finally made it down to the water this afternoon.

It was about 45*, windy and the water was COLD.

The real reason for going this afternoon was to try a spinnerbait I built yesterday (Sunday).

I ended up catching 2 fish...LOL...I don't believe I ever caught a bass this early in the season.

Here's the spinnerbait:

The trailer is a zonker strip (rabbit tail), man, does

that have some action in the water. The blade is

attached to the bearing with a snap for quick blade

size changes...worked today anyway. :D

fishing user avatarDean reply :

who needs soft water, just break some ice  ;D ;D

fishing user avatarGTrombly reply :

Everything is soft now and the snow has already melted. Just need to get a move on putting the new carpet back in the boat.

fishing user avatarJigfishn10 reply :

That's awesome GT!. I made my first casts on Tuesday and again on Wednesday.

FELT GOOD TO DO THAT AGAIN!

Grampa, sorry, I just read this post. Yes, it's still fishable. I haven't fished it in a couple of years. South Watuppa still has smallies. I do OK there early in the year, but once the summer rolls around, I have trouble getting a mosquito bite. I've talked to a few guys and they have the same experience.
