Newton Ma Area 2024

fishing user avatarukbumpkin reply :

Hello All,

I somewhat recently moved to Newton MA, I have lived in MA for a while but not in the Newton area and since moving my quick and easy to get to fishing holes have become, well not so quick and easy to get to. I'm looking for a few places if anyone knows of any, that I can hit in an evening where I don't have to drive to far and I'm able to beat the dark.

Thanks.

fishing user avatarJigfishn10 reply :

I fish a samll res in Lexington a lot. It's reall close to my work, so it's ideal and not far from you. It's on Rte 2A if your interested I can give you directions.

Noremega is right in Newton, I've never fished it and don't know why, but I plan on getting there this year.

Charles River as well.

I'm sure there's more, but those come to mind.

fishing user avatarukbumpkin reply :

Thanks Jigfishn10, I've been out on the Charles a couple times but not had to much luck. Might try to get out on Norumberg this weekend as that's really close to me.

Let me know how you do, I really want to try that one this year. :)

fishing user avatarukbumpkin reply :

I will. Not going to get out there this weekend as I'm gong out to see my mate on Knops pond. I should get out there one night this week though and I'll post on here my trails and tribulations, though if it's a week day it will most likely be from a shore.

fishing user avatarukbumpkin reply :

I drove by Norumbega at lunch time today to check it out. No fishing there the place is all fenced off unfortunately.

fishing user avatarukbumpkin reply :

Tried a small puddle of a pond called New Pond just off one of the RT9 exits I take to get home. Caught one around 2lbs on a jig.

Construction?

fishing user avatarukbumpkin reply :

Yeah, or at least that is what it looked like on the far side from where I was.

fishing user avataranglerjoe reply :

I have had some luck on the Charles at the duck pond at the end of Norumbega Road in Weston. This is on the border with Newton and Waltham, across from the Charles River boat house by the Newton Marriot. Many smaller bass 2lbs or less, bigger carp and heard reports of american eel from other anglers.

Also tried Crystal Lake in Newton twice but one dinky larry and some small perch, not much action there.

fishing user avatarJigfishn10 reply :

The duck pond at the end of Norumbega Road? I'll have to check that one out. Thanks for the tip, much appreciated!

Crystal Lake, is that in the Nonantum section?

BTW, great to have you on BR!

fishing user avatarukbumpkin reply :

Hey Joe,

Thanks for the info. I've had a couple out on the Charles around my area but again nothing of any size and it's been very inconsistent, or should I say I have been. Not tried Crystal yet, but it has been on the to do list.

Was hoping to get out to one of Jigfihn's hot spots in Milton today, but mother nature made sure that didn't happen this morning...

Thanks JigFishn. The Crystal lake I am referring to is near Newton Center off of Beacon Street. They stocked 400 rainbows there in the spring but guess they are all gone now. I am in the area too and constantly on the prowl for new honey holes. Norumbega reservoir was on my list of places to shake a rod at too. Too bad it seems to be off limits now.

fishing user avatarDorfonfishing reply :

I have been spending a lot of time on the banks of the Charles in the Auburndale/Waltham areas with limited success. I know there are monsters out there because some early mornings they are all over the surface. I've been mostly off of Woerd Ave in Waltham and West Pine St in Auburndale. Anyone having luck on the other side, off of Norumbega Rd?

fishing user avatarnhbassin reply :

Hey guys, Im moving down to Brighton at the end of this summer, and was wondering if you guys have fished Chandler Pond or Chestnut Hill Reservoir in Brighton? Anyone know if fishing is even allowed there, and if so, are there bass?

fishing user avatarJigfishn10 reply :

nhbassin, I ve never fished inside the 128 belt, but if you do fnd some spots, please let me know, I'd be really curious. Thanks nhb.

I have fished the boat ramp on Woerd Ave in the mornings but had to settle for some good size crappies (10-12" on a bitsy minnow). Where would the lunkers be?

I have tried Norumbega Road, Charles River Road (Waltham) and Purgatory Cove (from Forest Grove St.) also with good results. But all the bass I have caught have been 1-2lbs - nothing larger.

Also spent an unproductive day on Walden Pond in Concord today fishing from shore. Saw few 18" smallmouths but wouldn't rise to anything. I was using mainly soft plastic and rooster tails.

Hello nhbassin. I don't know about Chandler Pond but shore fishing is allowed in the Chestnut Hill Reservoir. I have heard there is some monster pike in there.

fishing user avatarukbumpkin reply :

I will also second the tales of monster pike in Chestnut Hill Reservoirs, as I've heard the same tales. I haven't fished either places though so not much good to you there.

I have fished Walden a number of times as I used to live in Concord. There are some good smallmouth in there but quantity has never been that good in my experience. I would recommend Whites Pond, which is out that way (Sudbury/Concord line), as having much better quantities of smallmouth. I've had some really nice largemouth out of Warrens Pond in Concord but you'd need a canoe/kayak on Warrens.

I'm definitely going to check out the other side of the river (Norumbega/Charles River Roads) today after work and will report back. If you go up a little further on Woerd Ave., past the boat launch, there is a culvert where I caught a 1.5lber a few weeks ago. There seem to be some other spots further up as well.

I love Walden Pond for swimming but never even considered shore fishing up there. No boating at Walden right?

fishing user avataranglerjoe reply :

@Dorfonfishing: You can boat on Walden, I saw people trolling for lakers in the middle. Good luck this evening at the Charles - I have had good results fishing the edges of the pads with surface baits - poppers and frogs. Weightless texas-rigged worms also work well. I will have to try the Woerd Ave stretch again. Do you know if you can fish from behind the watch factory building in Waltham? I have seen some people fishing but there is a sign on the gate that says private.

@ukbumpkin: I have heard a lot about White's pond in Concord. Is there good shore access? My fav place for smallmouths is Wachusett Reservoir in Worcester - shore fishing only and consistently good action but you got to start real early.

fishing user avatarukbumpkin reply :

There is a number of good shoreline openings around the pond. There is a beach with a car park on the Sudbury side and paths going around.

fishing user avatarDorfonfishing reply :

I got this little guy before work this morning off of Islington Park in Auburndale. I was using a black/blue flake senko. While I normally seem to be bass repellent, they are out there in this area.

fishing user avataranglerjoe reply :

Been moseying around the Charles in the Newton area again this past week - caught a few good ones on a weightless wacky rigged senko. The river is full of weeds but drop the worms in the openings and let it sink - most times it won't get to hit the bottom! Also, afternoon seems to be the best time for this.

fishing user avatarnhbassin reply :

Thanks Jigfishn10, anglerjoe and ukbumpkin.

That is great to hear that Chestnut Hill Reservoir MIGHT have some good fish in it since it is only 0.6 miles from my new apartment. I will post pictures and let you guys know how I do when I try it out in the fall.

fishing user avatarukbumpkin reply :

Yeah no problem. I haven't managed to accumulate more than 4-5 hours of fishing in the last two weeks and in that time nothing picture worthy...

Should have a little more time in the next week though. Watch this space for lunkers :-)

fishing user avatarukbumpkin reply :

Oh I just skunked myself with that last comment, I know it...

fishing user avataranglerjoe reply :

Speaking of lunkers - caught this bad boy in a small 5-acre no-name pond on my way to Wachusett yesterday afternoon. Didn't have a scale but must have been 7+ lbs. Also caught two bronzebacks in Wachu 3-4 lbs. I have been skunked there sometimes but yesterday was a good day. Must be the new moon too - get on the water this weekend folks. Catch n release! Happy Independence Day!

Thank you gentlemen! :)

ukbumpkin - I took your advice and hit White Pond in Concord this weekend. I was out for trout but I saw a bass jumping close and quickly threw on a rapala crank. Put up quite a fight on my ultralite trout rig but finally landed this nice 5 pounder! No such luck with the trout but I know they are in there - saw an old timer with two nice 15" rainbows in his bucket. Nice pond with very little fishing pressure and 20 mins from Newton - definitely will be back there soon. Thanks for the tip.

Wow that fish must have been a lot of fun on an ultra-light setup. It is a beautiful pond with next to know fishing pressure and some really nice trails around that area also.

No kidding! He bent my 7' UL rod double and made the drag sing! A good 3-4 minute fight during which he made several 15 yard runs for the weeds. Look how exhausted he looks in the picture. haha. He revieved soon once I put him back in the water and was on his way in no time. I caught a couple other smaller ones on the same crank that day.

Read that they have stocked broodstock salmon in that pond as well. Watch for me on the water with my surf/salmon rod soon! :)

fishing user avatarStas Kovtun reply :

great thread but sort of died out...any other good spots. I fished Crystal lake today and 4 bass, all under 1lbs. I've heard stories of some monsters in there though. Any one fish hemlock gorge section of the charles with an success...I've absolutely had no hits at all and that section looks like great bass water.

fishing user avatarukbumpkin reply :

I live very close to Hemlock Gorge and have fished it many times on my way home. The river has never really produced that much for me. There is a little pond section close to route 9 that I've had a few out over 2.5lbs, but it becomes very choked up mid summer.

fishing user avatarnhbassin reply :

Hey guys, I tried out Chestnut Hill Reservoire a couple times in the past few weeks. Ive seen tons of big baitfish, but all ive caught was a handful of pickerell. No big pike yet, and no bass to be found. The season is over now, but I will be trying it out again in the spring.

I caught a couple of small bass on shallow crankbaits recently at Harold Parker State Forest in North Andover as well. Anyone else fished there before?
