The most beautiful lake in New England 2024

fishing user avatarmackkie reply :

If you guys had to choose which lake was the most beautiful, or even the top few choices which would it be?

I personally think the Rangeley area in Maine, and a bit of NH is fantastic.  Pretty good smallmouth fishing in some of the area lakes and rivers as well.

fishing user avatarTopDog reply :

Quabbin Resevoir and then Lake Umbagog on the ME/NH line.

fishing user avatarxjma99 reply :

The Quabbin is very nice, but the limited access is a sad situation.

After that I'm pretty fond of Sebago....which aslo has a portion of limited access, but much much smaller than what the Quabbin has.

fishing user avatarmackkie reply :

XJMA,

How is the bass fishing in Sebago, mor smallies or largemouths?  I know this lake is widely fished for lake trout and other species, but don't hear much about the bass fishing up there.  Thanks for the response.

fishing user avatarfishizzle reply :

Compensating Res. in CT

gin clear with 4" brown and tan rocks as the bottom

It looks like a fish tank

And most of all no houses on it

Well I haven't fished Sebago enough to really give you a "statistically significant" answer, but for what it's worth, I've mostly caught smallies there.  Being such a large lake there is pretty much every type of habitat for fish that they could dream of!  I'm sure they love it in there!!

Also, even though I've got family with a boat there (bow rider) I bass fish from shore, in some areas with great success!  The middle of the lake is good for trolling for trout and salmon.  Like you said, big trout and salmon lake, and from what I've gathered that's what the majority of people are gunning for there....which maybe is why the bass are easy pickins?

fishing user avatarJCrzy4Bass reply :

You guys forgetting about Meredith Bay up on Lake Winnepesaukee? The most beautiful lake period in my opinion. I remember my last vacation up there... incredible area. My dream is to own a house on that lake when I retire and have my own boat slip and triton or nitro bass boat. Yea I know... I'm living in fantasy land.

Anyway... lovely area, especially at sunset and in the morning with the sun coming up. Yea it is getting more built up but it's not a top rated attraction in NH for just that reason. I can't wait to get another vacation up there.

Great Rainbow Trout, Smallmouth Bass and Salmon fishing up there too.

fishing user avatarxjma99 reply :

Winnipesaukee is nice, and huge, but it is pretty built up, espeically around meridith.  There are lots of nice coves and such.  Two of my uncles live right off of Winnipesaukee, both have boats, but I haven't fished there so much in recent years.  Used to a lot when I was a kid.

Sebago and Winnipesaukee are totally different though.  Almost to the point that they're apples to oranges!

Next time you've got the oportunity to vacation in the lakes region, check out sebago (and the surrounding lakes too).  Less built up (but, like everything, getting there) and it seems to me less boat traffic.

fishing user avatarJCrzy4Bass reply :

I agree it's really built up now. My great grandparents had a place out there a while back... shame it's not in the family anymore. I was just a kid when I lived in Lowell, Mass (first ten years of my life) and never fished that much, at least enough to remember. Going back up now I'm sure I would see what you guys see in those lakes. Last time I drove up along Mass on the turnpike and in Connecticut on the main highway there I kept crossing over crystal clear lakes and could see the bottom 10-15 feet out from driving in my car. It was unreal. Definately a different type of deal than what we got in Virginia.

If I'm ever back in that neck of the woods I'm gonna post here and look a few of you fellas up so you can show me around. If any of you guys have some photos of the lakes around there I'd love to see em'. Especially any of the ones around Chelmsford, Westford, Dracut, Lowell, Grafton, etc (Massachussetts). I know they have the Merrimack up here as I used to live two miles from it as a kid and would watch boat races down there all the time at the park across the bridge from Chelmsford (I lived next to Pawtuckettville Elementary).

All my family is up there and I could wiggle in an accuse or two to make a week of it. Any in cities north of these would be great too as I used to frequent New Hampshire all the time (Tyngsboro area), I think that's how you spell it. Anyway.. later guys.

New Enland has a plethora of beautiful waterways! Yet IMO jet ski's, boat traffic shorelines filled with houses and marina's takes away from the attractiveness. Being isolated from the rat race corralled by the mountains Loons calling out, Bullfrogs the size of small pets, Eagles and Osprey diving for a meal, Moose wading the shoreline Humming birds buzzing about is what I seek and by far IMO Umbagog lake in Errol NH is our own little piece of heaven! 8-)

I think allmost any lake your on has its beautiful moments.I'm partial to the ones up north that have the mountains as a backdrop.Like,Tamworth at the base of Mt. Chacoura(sp?)..My buddy has a camp near Fryeburg Me. on a little pond I dont remember the name, just a small pond. His back deck faces the pond and behind that is the Presidential range, its just a stunning view, particularly in the fall.We had to go up a few weeks ago to shovel about 3feet of snow off the roof. What a sight,if you like snow, the whole place was just buried in white,Peacefull is about the best way to discribe it. 8-)

fishing user avatarTokyo Tony reply :

My favorite, and the most beautiful lake I've ever fished, is more of a pond than a lake.  It's a little (~50-70 acres) lake just outside of Hanover, NH, located at the top of a small mountain/big hill.  Crystal-clear water, surrounded by hills and mountains, and it's about a 1/2 mile hike directly up the mountain to get there.  In spring/early summer, you can see the bottom in 15-20 feet, and the place is packed with smallies and some nice largemouth.  This is my favorite place to go float tubing.  Can't wait until ice-out.

fishing user avatarbassmedic46 reply :

Is there any shore fishing on Sebago or winnipawsaki?

Where is Mascoma lake in NH? Is there shore fishing?

Mascoma Lake is in the small town of Enfield, NH. Yes, there is shore fishing. The best spot is off the bridge at the middle of the lake, and the second best spot is the boat ramp near the dam. It's worth a trip, there are 5lb Largemouth pulled out quite frequently, you just need to know where to fish. If you have any more questions regarding mascoma lake hit me up.

fishing user avatarbassmedic46 reply :

Thank You, Can you use live bait there?

If you are ever up in fyeburg ask your buddy to drag the boat over to Kezar lake in lovell.  Some big magazine (time?) had it in the top ten most beautiful  in the country.  Steven king is slowly buying up as much of the lake as possible.  Great fishing plenty of coves brook running out of it pleeenty of coves and its 9 miles long.  That would be my favorite lake in New England.  Oh and PM me and I will tell you my pond "X"  in the area ponds not pretty but the fish sure are.  You will never want to leave.

Merrymeeting Lake, New Durham, NH. The crystal clear water and massive boulders surrounded by smallies mid to late spring. Beautiful!

I grew up summers on kezar lake ( not really near kezar falls) I lived in brown(town)field for a winter and worked at attitash ski mountain.  My sister has a summer place in Bridgton and my parents have a place in Naples.  I have a bunch of friends up there one of them has a house in brownfield.  Does the pond you fished have a railroad bridge crossing the edge of one side?  Lots of little ponds in Brownfield.  My buddy lives down the street from a pretty cool little pond has an Island in the dead center that people do "hot laps" around when they water ski.  Your friend will know where Kezar lake is just go toward freberg on route 5 take the right on route 302 and stay left past the Fairgrounds...easy as that.  Bout twenty five minutes from brownfield (heck it takes 40 minutes up there to make a beer run). Pm me and I will tell you the ways of Kezar it really is an amazing 9 mile lake.

There are none that I know of but there is one on the Merrymeeting River in Alton called Merrymeeting River Campground. Looks like a nice place. And its not far from the lake. However, I have pulled some HUGE largemouth from that river as well as rainbow trout. If you go the right time you can catch salmon from Winni heading to the river to spawn. If you do go to the lake or river, PM me and I'll give you pointers for both. Especially the river. It can be tricky.

Friend of mine stayed at the Merrymeetin campground and said it was great. Got a lot of fish. Tight Lines  ;)

Can you access the lake from the river by boat?

Unforunately, no. But there is a public access ramp and free parking if you get there at the right time.
