The 9th Annual BassResource RoadTrip
On Wilson Lake Alabama!
April 30th - May 5th
This year's trip will be bigger and better than ever! This is a tremendous smallmouth fishery with some great largemouth and spotted bass fishing to boot. However, this trip isn't strictly about catching bass. It's more about friends getting together and having a great time, good food and meeting new people....with some fishing thrown in for good measure. Wilson Lake is the "place to be" in spring!
Meet the BassResource staff as well as everyone on the boards in-person. And of course, everyone will be up to their fun antics!
For those who haven't been and might be uncertain if you'll fit in....don't worry, you will, we'll make sure of it!
Check out last year's highlight video!

You are responsible for your room reservation
We will be staying at the The Doublehead Resort. Call 1-800-685-9267 to make reservations. You MUST mention you are with the Bass Resource group in order to get the group discount. You do not have to book it for the entire week, you can go longer or shorter. Just understand we cannot guarantee availability if you want to stay outside the event dates.
You must make your reservation by Feb. 28th. Room availability cannot be guaranteed after March 1st. Note that a $120 deposit is required. If you need any help with your room reservation, send a PM to Alpster with a phone number where you can be reached.
The cabins comfortably sleep 4-8 persons. Assuming 4 people share a cabin, the rate per person per day would be $46.98, tax and cleaning charge included.
Each cabin is constructed with vaulted ceilings and exposed beams that reach to the second story loft. The first floor is designed with a master bedroom and full bath, along with a fully equipped kitchen and open great room with a wood burning fireplace and satellite TV plus Internet access. Also located on the first floor are a dinette and a washer and dryer. Upstairs you will find 2 additional bedrooms and another full bath. And of course, each cabin has its own private pier, hammock, picnic table, charcoal grill, and rocking chairs.
There are no RV or camping facilities on the grounds, although Joe Wheeler State Park is near-by.
The docks behind the cabins do not have electrical hook-ups so long power cords will be needed. There are boat slips available that have electrical hook-ups, and are free of charge for cabin renters.
Registration Form
All attendees and their significant others are required to submit a completed and signed Registration Form. Here is the link to the Form.
http://www.ronnieandliz.info/pdf_files/RoadTrip%202014%20Reg.pdf
Fishing Licenses
An Alabama fishing license is all you'll need, regardless of the area you plan to fish on Wilson Lake, but even if you plan to fish Pickwick Lake, just minutes down river from where we're staying. Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee have reciprocal agreements for Pickwick lake. However, if you wish to fish the area below Pickwick Dam, a Tennessee license would be needed.
A non-resident 7-day Alabama fishing license $27.60. Here's where you can get your license (scroll down to the "links" section).
Common Questions
Who is invited?
Everyone!
How does fishing work during the trip? Are we all on our own, do members pair up? Share patterns? The lake is pretty big. Do we all launch at the same time in the morning as a group or everyone do their own thing?
To begin with, this is not a tournament. It's just a bunch of folks who enjoy the fishing and camaraderie. We will probably have a "biggest bass" contest, but there is no entry fee and is pretty much on the honor system. Everyone does their own thing when fishing. They launch when they want and where they want. As for pairings, every evening we do our best to pair everyone up for the next day. NO ONE is left standing on the bank.
How does lodging work, do we tell you if we require a room? Do we get paired up for rooms with other members?
It is the responsibility of each individual to arrange their own accommodations. We have blocked 10 cabins for BR members, but reservations must be made by you. The block will be removed March 1st, so unreserved cabins may not be available after that date. Stay active on the Road Trip forum and post from time to time that you are looking for a roommate. It always works out.
What are the nightly activities, as I have seen videos of speakers in the past. When does that happen?
Almost every evening one or more of us will cook for the group. RW and Long Mike usually cook hamburgers. Alpster usually does some sort of cajun dish. We pass the hat and ask for a $5.00 contribution from each member to help defray our costs. On one of the evenings (yet to be determined) we will have our "banquet." This is when we have our speaker(s.) Dinner is on you that night.
Do i need to bring a boat?
NO, you do not need a boat. Everyone is welcome, and everyone fishes! We hold random drawings (see schedule above) to pair boaters/non-boaters up.
Awesome gonna do my best to make it for my first road trip!
Hot d**n!! The news we've been waiting for! Let me just say.....IN!
Aaaaaa! Yes! Thanks, Glenn This will be the first gathering of other anglers for me. It sounds like my version of heaven. Gonna move heaven and earth to be there!
One thing Glenn forgot to mention is that you shouldn't have to pay for the entire cost of the cabin by yourself. Use this thread to buddy up with some people and split the cost. This is how lifetime friends are made on this trip. I can't wait to see everyone there.
So Gene do you snore, lol... Anyway would love to take the boys to this but they are still a bit young maybe in a few years we will make the 14hr drive...
I better start making friends, and find some roomates!! This will be the first time going and I hope everything goes as planned so I can go!!
Any other single gals out there going?
On 11/14/2013 at 11:51 PM, KyakR said:Any other single gals out there going?
Probably not, but we will have several couples that you might feel more comfortable
staying with. If you have already visited the website you saw that the accomodations
are cottages, seperate bedrooms and lots of space.
The Roadtrip isn't like a fishing or hunting camp with a bunch of rednecks. It's much closer
to a family reunion. I believe we had four women (wives) there last year. If you want some
reference from a female perspective, send a PM to Keri.

Added something you forgot there....
awesome!! just made my day.....
already marked myself out for those days at work...
last year was my 1st trip, it truly was an incredible experience. everyone was very kind to a "1st timer"
looking forward to seeing everyone again....
Time off confirmed by the boss, cabin rented :-)) I expect Chad will be with me again and my wife is a maybe. Can hardly wait!
If you have any questions or need any help with the "Road Trip", send me a PM and I will try to help you.
Ronnie
I hope I can make this one too. Wife is in school so I will have to see what happens. It would be the 4th trip and on a lake I would really like to fish.
Kyak, Last year my wife went with me.
Nice video Glenn.
Been waiting for this info as well. Will start working at my schedule, it's a very busy time for us. If we can't make it for the whole week maybe 3 or 4 days. I fished Wilson for half a day many years ago. It was cold and I didn't know the lake. The fella I was with was a local and a customer of mine but his heart wasn't in it because of the weather, 0 fish caught. I liked the look of the lake and really want to give it another shot. Thanks to all those responsible for offering this opportunity to the membership!
Great!!
I'm gonna go to this one...Looking forward to meeting everyone and putting a face to the printed word
I would say I don't want to brag about being on the "cover" of the video but I don't want to LIE either!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA!
seriously, It is a great time, and everyone needs to try to attend, it's a total blast!
everyone is great and willing to help. hell, I'm even likable in person !
no worries about this being your 1st trip or your 9th, boat or no boat, come have fun, fish, make life long friends.
and for those wanting to come but think you don't know "enough", no sweat either, I can honestly say I learned more about fishing in that one week and the entire year I read message boards, IT'S THAT GOOD FOLKS.
To talk to others, from other parts of the country, to see how others fish, baits, style, ect. ect, you can not help but to learn something and walk away with new friends.
PLUS if you get to fish with Glenn he WILL school you on the senko!(weather permitting)
Hope to see ya'll there.

Nice video Glenn.
My wife is in school too, but I know I won't be able to go if she doesn't get to go too.
I hope to make it again this year......last year was great!
But got some job security issues going on after having the bank purchased/merger/acquisition. No idea after 11 weeks if they will be extending offers of employment to us or not. Actually they have not told us anything at all, really , except that the merger will be finalized and conversion completed around Aprilish........just have to see.
If you get the chance to go......you should...it is a great time!
As I'm watching the video and chuckling my wife looks over and says must be "fish porn" I reply yes and also a glimpse of my first fishing vacation coming up haha....just realized that's my birthday weekend too! Happy bday to me!
Ok......well I can't stand it. I watched last year's video too. We are in.
Got da fever!
Woohoo!! Been holding my breath waiting for this announcement ever since we left Pickwick back in May! Hopefully I will get more pics this year.

I will figure out a way to go even if I have to change classes, whatever it takes!
This REALLY sounds fun! I'll be making plans now. So, boat space hasn't been an issue on past trips? As a float-tuber who doesn't own a boat, I feel a little funny imposing on other people's rigs..
On 11/15/2013 at 7:11 AM, Brian Needham said:hell, I'm even likable in person !
It's true. I must admit that I was skeptical..........but he is right. He is likable in person.
I can't speak for everyone else......but I did not meet anyone there that I did not find friendly and enjoyable to be around.
And I fit his description in I don't know much.........hope everyone makes it back this year and a bunch more show up too.
A great time.
Gunner, don't worry about not having a boat. There are always enough boat seats to go around. NO ONE will be left standing on the bank, or in a float tube.
Attaboy, Chris! Attagirl, Becky!
I'll be rocking a Raiders bandana over my face. Wouldn't want to ruin the anonymity of the GREATEST, BEST, MOST FASCINATING bass fishing Raiders fan of all time. Raiders rag on my head, Raiders rag on my face, Chelsea Jersey on my back, Black and Silver ADIDAS pants, and some nice comfy flippy flops (in Chelsea blue of course)!
I look forward to seeing all yall. I know I can make at least two days.

did you decide on what you were going to do on the shutdown gig?
look forward to fishin with ya!!!
Still weighing options. Should have something definitive by the first of next week. Ain't out of money yet, but getting close. Has been a nice four weeks off though. I got two interviews tomorrow and one on Tuesday.
I'm so happy I logged on today. I had an amazing time at Guntersville. I'm hoping I can make this trip. Alabama was such a great place and I look forward to going back!
I'm in! I'm more likely to be traveling there myself so if anyone wants a roomie I'm soon down! This is exactly what I've been looking for! I'm going to need more info about how to get there from las Vegas! I will do some research on my part but any help would be great as far as airports and buses to the site!!

no sure about a Yak..... of course Tupelo has a petting zoo with bison.
I am sure you could stop off in Kentucky to pick up hay, if not, I am sure there is a store nearby that carries sweet feed.
check the resort's pet policy though.

i think yak do better in northern climate.... lol....
We are currently doing the homework on airports and ground transportation. I will post in this thread what we find to be the best airport and how we might arrange carpooling for air travelers. It is best for you to arrange your own roomates if you can. As the time gets near, we will be better able to fill empty spots in cabins. Please advertise in this thread if you need roomates and when you get four members, reserve a cabin. This will make it much easier for your humble coordinators. Stay tuned to this thread for any new info that becomes available. The registration form will be posted soon, so get it returned as soon asyou can.

You can fly into Muscle Shoals airport (MSL), which is 15 mins away. Avis, Enterprise, and Hertz rent cars there, or it's close enough that somebody could come pick you up, or you can even cab it.

nah Yaks would do fine, while not Indigenous to the South they can survive.
In all serious though, if a person was thinking about bringing a kayak, I would wait closer to time to make that decision.
At this time of year on the TN river current can be rolling pretty good. They were pulling over 200k CFS of water through Pickwick last year with all the flood gates open.
not sure how Wilson responds to that, but Wilson is one of the smaller lakes on the chain and may or may not release more water because of it.
Being in a kayak would possibly limit a person to protected coves, and if anything bad did happen it might produce a long and hard paddle to saftey.
But what do I know, I have seen people kayak on the Mississippi in a 150 year flood.
I am just urging saftey.
Guys I'm thinking about going this year. It sounds like a lot of fun and I will learn a lot. So do I tow my boat from PA or just fly in and rent a car? If I fly in will there be enough boats?
I say pull your boat down if you are comfortable with it and have dependable tow vehicle and Trailer.
I drove last year and will again this year.....about 550 miles for me. checked and repacked wheel bearings on trailer check lights ect.......like you should always do anyway.
I just like having my boat/stuff with me.
there were several folks that came down last year without a boat............as far as I know everyone that wanted to got to fish and nobody was left standing on the banks that wanted to go.
Last year was my first year and I am told that it is always like that.
I think the more boats the better.................but either way it will work out.
There was some crazy cajun guy (Alpster) that rode his motorcycle all the way down from up north that way last year...........he's crazy! but he cooks up a mean dish of cajun grub.
But that is how much fun it is.
So.....bring your boat if you can.....if not.......don't worry about...just c'mon down.
I will be there again, and will be hosting the next installment of the Saturday Night Wine & Cheese Soirée, which will, of course, be Wednesday evening.
Don't have a menu yet. I'll wait until I get a better idea how many people I need to feed before making any plans.
Reservations Secured this morning.

I've been to three of them, driving from PA each time. It's not that bad of a drive.
The one thing I found out on the first one.....dont forget that on your return trip that there is an hour time difference. It makes it seem like a looooooong day going home.
hey speed..... there is rumor you are coming to your 4th !
I hope the rumor is true!
we can make the sequal to southern trout eaters!
edit.
I can WATCH and LEARN while you make the sequal.
That's all speculation. All of it. LOL
Wow, the resort looks awesome! Just checked out the floor plans in the cottages...amazing!

This looks awesome. I could pick anyone up at the Nashville Airport and drive down - If I could get away.
looking for some guys in the atlanta area to co op with. will be hauling my boat. this sounds like a blast
Well well......I go off for a week and come back to this!

I'm working on going. I hope I can. I know for sure the boss can not go.
As far as age goes is their such thing as being "too young", I totally understand if there is. My thought would be that my dad and I would go next year, not sure if he would fish or not though I think it would be a blast...
Also do you need a boat to go on the roadtrip?
Anyone under the age of 18 is welcome, but needs to be accompanied by a parent.
Non-boaters are welcome!

HA HA ! I just saw this.
It really is a great time.
I know last year, I was really nervous on the first day. Its amazing how catching that first fish calms a person on new water.
I worried for weeks, "I am taking my boat, are people going to expect me to put them on fish? If so they got the wrong guy" ....... as I have only been fishing for a few years. I still get nervous sometimes when fishing with someone new, until that first fish in is the boat.
The great thing about last year, we all caught a good amount fish...... and even if we didn't, I know everyone I fished with, I enjoyed a great conversation throughout the day.
I never have had as much fun fishing as last spring at Pickwick. The people, the fish , the experience as a whole....... you just cant explain it you just have to come and see it. People always wonder if they should come, if they fit in, if they are welcome.... it is a YES!!!!
Hoping to see you again this year Chris!

Looking forward to it! Especially since it is in my backyard!
PS There are no bass in WIlson Lake
Talked to my bride, looks like I'll make this one. Just had to make sure she could cover the kiddies while I am away. Probably bring my Dad along, and my boat.
Made our reservation this morning. We are planning on getting there on Monday April 28th and doing a whole 7 days.........all the way to the end of the roadtrip. Then head home on Monday May 5th.
That'll give me an extra two days to find some other kind of fish in Wilson.
I believe that at least one other member has reserved a cabin for 7 days too.

I haven't had any experience with Kayaks on the big river but I have seen folks use them in some of the creeks, i.e. Shoal Creek, Bluewater Creek, Town Creek, Big Nance. I personally would not feel comfortable getting out on the big river with them. But I am not experienced with them either! LOL .
I'm wondering if it is possible to car pool with someone? I would need someone coming from PA,NY,OH, or any other north eastern state. I would obviously split gas and all that, but do any other members do this? I also need to room with someone, but I would'nt be ready to pay until January or maybe February (hoping there are other members doing this as well). I guess I am asking if there is anyone who would like to go ahead and make plans?
Travis. It's been done many times in the past.
Cabin was reserved and now registration form has been emailed to Long Mike!
Now the Long wait begins. :-(
Does anyone else hear crickets? That outage sure took the wind out of the sails on this topic
Yes, it did. But I doubt it dampened the enthusiasm for attending the Roadtrip, version 2014.
Boats hooked up, truck gassed up. I'm ready to go!!!
Ugh, wish it wasn't during school. Oh well
Reservations secured

Thinking of going but can't bring the boat. Anyone from the Southeastern PA/NJ area want to meet up?

I'm sure not a whitewater kayaker, but as I have a trolling motor on the stern I can go out into current if it's not too bad. Is it really ripping near Doublehead in the spring?
Never been to Doublehead, I have been on Wilson lake and surrounding area. The only ripping current would be below the dam should you choose to lock through. Should not be a problem on the lake for you and your pet yak.

Doublehead Lodge is located on Town Creek so you won't have much trouble there. If you get out on the main lake at times the current can be swift. Especially if it has rained a lot recently. TVA has a smartphone app that shows lake levels and current flow on the TVA chain of lakes. If you have a smartphone you could get it and check it out and get an idea of the usual current and water levels. If not here is a link to the TVA website with the same info. http://www.tva.com/river/lakeinfo/index.htm
Thanks! Will get that app

Her name's Sheena I'm bringing her with me to meet Brian.
If the 80's taught us anything......Sheena was a MAN!
Somebody jog my memory. Was Wilson the lake that Davy Hite won the Elite tourney below the dam?
Yes, but technically "Pickwick" below the Wilson Dam. He fished one spot on a generator
exclusively, fished the Berkley Hollow Belly exclusively and all his fish were smallmouth.

yes below the dam on the Pickwick side if memory serves. There are several youtube vids on that "alabama charge"
Bighead, you rememeber last year we had an everstart tournament going on during the road trip... the Surret brothers finished 2nd and 3rd they both locked through to wilson everyday and caught 25# +/- everyday for the 3 day event.

Cool! I would like to try the tail race thing a little while we are there! It's not something you can do much of in my neck of the woods.

I have a general question about Wilson....... being that it is "only" 15 miles long it would seem easier to cover water, and if the fish were "patternable" to set up a decent milk run? does this hold true?
also it is seemingly a deeper impoundment too, if that is true then does is also make it more or a sopt on a spot lake?
lastly, how does this compare to pickwick, I would assume it is still the clearer, rock bottom, current related TN River type lake, no? if you fish both(Wilson, pickwick) do you think patterns interchange between the two lakes? (within reason)
feel free to answer here if you are comfortable....but don't give anything away. Don't want the fishing information trolls to get anything good, Ha ha....always someone looking on the internet. or you could PM me.
I received my first Road Trip Registration Form today. Congratulations Bighead!

First, just let me say I haven't fished Wilson as much lately as I have in the past. Lots of sloughs and creeks on WIlson, more docks and boathouses than Pickwick for sure. Yes It's pretty easy to cover water on the main lake, but you also have lots of creeks you can run up in such as Shoal Creek, Bluewater, 6 mile creek and Big Nance. No submerged grass to fish, but there are weedlines and the like. I think patterns are interchangeable to some degree between Pickwick and Wilson. Current is always a factor, especially below Wheeler Dam. Also, a good place to check out monthly fishing reports for Wilson and Pickwick is http://www.aonmag.com/page.php?id=143&cid=178 Local guides contribute to these reports. Also http://www.fishpickwicklake.com

Do you ever fish the standing timber that is under water? Or the old Train track that is still in the lake? Have not fished it but one time, and that was around 1989. Always fished Wheeler lake or Pickwick.
Thanks Jack Fate!

I primarily fish Pickwick too, but yes I have fished around the old train track, have not fished much standing timber, if at all.

We had an old boy pre-fish there years ago for a club Tournament. Problem was we were fishing Joe Wheeler LOL My boat had big fish and total weight within a mile of the ramp at Joe Wheeler.
Planning on making this one, But I will be fishing North of Chattanooga Tn (Harrison Bay State park) the week and weekend before. Coming right by there on the way home with the camper. So may find a spot to drop it the Sunday before. Come home and get my boat and go back on Wed.
Pete
Can someone tell me what section there putting us up in a the cabins? Wife and I may run down and check them out during Christmas. If I stay in one rather then mess with the camper, I'm sure I will be looking for someone to split a cabin with and have a boat seat open for most of the week.
Also can bring the smoker and do some Boston Butts or Briskets or Chicken or all the above for one of the dinners. Not going to say its going to be the best you will ever eat. But have fed Hundreds at a time and never had anyone that did not come back for seconds.

Pete, all of the cabin lay-outs are identical, so it doesn't matter which cabin you will be staying in. We would love to have your opinions about the cabins and their environs prior to our deadline date for reservations. I would be most interested in your opinion of how fisherman-friendly the resort is, vis-a-vis boat/trailer parking and electrical hook-ups.
Secondly, we will happily accept your offer of the smoker. When any of the guys offer to do the cooking, we happily pass the hat among the attendees to help offset costs of the chef.

I do not know if there are different 'sections' or not so I am no help there.
The name of the place is The Doublehead Resort. Call 1-800-685-9267........give them a shout. They were very friendly answering my questions both by email and phone during my inquiries and reservation confirmation.
So you really don't need anything for Christmas and your wife is at a loss for ideas.
Why not set aside a litlle money and vacation time and dedicate both to joining us

This is one of the frustrations of planning and organizing the trip. A lot members will wait until the last minute to sign up and it makes it difficult to best use our resources. It makes it easier to make sure you have a bed and boat if you get signed up early. I will always encourage all members to get signed up as soon as you possibly can. It makes the trip better for everyone.

The rest who are planning to be there get your registration forms to Long Mike. It only costs you the price of a stamp, or, you can fill out the form, copy and save the file, then attach it to an email to Long Mike. Can't be much easier than that. Those who graciously prepare meals for the rest of us need to know how much of the fixings to bring, from Ghoti and his kickoff soiree, to Alpster who provides a mean Cajun dinner, to RW who brings his own special blend of ground meats, for hamburger night, and others who have offered to prepare a meal for the rest of us.

The food may not be edible, but I'd pay to see you cough over an open flame.
Plans are to run down and take pics and check out how much power cord it will take to get from the docks to the cabins. And will also see what else I can find out. If you have something you want me to check out. Post it here and will check in the am. Or text me at 731-434 813one. If it does not work out for tomorrow. I will get down there within the next week.
Also need to find out what day I will be signed up to cook on? Can smoke boston butts for Pulled BBQ,Smoked chicken qtrs and baked beans or Brisket and Baked beans. Of if everyone would rather have it and help me unload and load the cooker back up. I can bring the Big fish cooker and do a fish fry. Catfish and hushpuppys. Have fed all the above to hundreds at a time. Never anyone walking off not enjoying a good meal.
Also anyone that needs to share a cabin? Also will have my boat with me, and have room in it.

Just a heads up, we did not get to make the trip to check out the cabins. But will ASAP, but going by Google Earth it will take every bit of 100 ft to reach most docks if not 150 ft.
As for someone to share a cabin with. Looks like my wife will be there part of the time also. So will just drop off our camper the Sunday before. Then head on home and take the boat back on Wed am. Found a camp site a few miles from there toward the dam.

Just an FYI,. Unless they have fixed it I would not recommend using the boat ramp at Fisherman's resort. There is also a Wise Alloys campground with boat ramp about 4 or 5 miles away going back towards Muscle Shoals just off River Road.

Jack thanks for the info. But figure it will be filled the week we will be there. Being they allow people to stay there 50 weeks at one spot. I bet its filled with people that park there camper there early and stay the whole year. But will sure check it out. Only bad thing, we will drop ours off on Sunday on the way back to Harrison Bay state park. As we always camp and fish there the week before this one. So would be leaving it where ever we stay until we get back on Wed. As I have to go home and get the boat. Can wash clothes in the camper. But still have to get the boat. May have a hitch on the back of the camper by then. Would only be around 80ft with it behind the 5th wheel. LOL

Joe wheeler campground is also close by but u would have to trailer the boat to Wilson unless u locked through wheeler dam.

Thanks for the info, and I have been there before. But would rather stay closer. Even though for one day or half of a day, I hope to fish around the park there. Last time I fished there, between both of us in the boat. We had 2 limits of 5 fish each and averaged weight of 5 lbs per fish. Best fish was 9 lbs 15 oz, next was 8 lbs 11 oz and a pair of 7's. This same time of year . And within site of the dam. That was throwing 20+ crank baits That was I think in 1990. We were fishing a Club Tournament. Would have loved it to have been a money game
That is impressive. Especially on wheeler.
It it was unreal, all of them on deep diving crank baits. Sad part was, I broke off and my buddy in the back of the boat had the three biggest fish in the boat while I was tieing a new one on. Then stupid Yachts got to running over where we were catching them. And that was the end. For some reason that spot has never produced like that again. He has tired it a dozen times and never found them. But I know where its at, But will have to borrow that boat to find it. Put a Big X to mark it by.

Wasn't aware they allowed year round camping at Colbert County Alloys Park. You may be getting it confused with the campground at Riverton/Rose Trail down on Pickwick. Year round "squatters" used to be a problem there but TVA put a stop to that.

That was what is listed on there website. you can only use a site for 50 weeks out of the year? And that was on the new site. It may be that people don't know it yet. Plus at 15.00 per night with full hookup. Man that is cheap.

Awesome Mike!!!
It's with mixed emotions that I have to withdraw from this years Roadtrip. My eldest and his wife who live out of the country will be welcoming my first grandchild into the world in May. Ill be making the trip to visit them but that will not leave enough vacation balance to also come to the road trip. I will be at the Classic if anyone would like to meet up there. Best wishes to all the attendees! Bert
Well, that's a dissappointment for the RT, but congrats on the grandbaby!

Hate to hear that Bert. Congrats on grand baby.
Dang, Bert. Sorry you can't make it. Maybe we could get together at Lake Fork for a couple of days sometime between now and then.
congratualations on the grand child....... extra fishing partner in a few years!
Well how cool is that? Congrats! At least I'll see you at the Classic.

Grand Child trumps a fishing trip for sure. Know I love all four of ours. And the last one well would give up fishing for him in a heartbeat. Well would think of it anyway.

Yep.
You won't regret it. Last year was my first Road Trip.
I was so excited....signed up early and was rearing to go all winter.
And as it turned out, rightfully so! To say I had a great time is such an understatement. EVERYONE was great and fun to be around.
I signed up early for the 2014 Road Trip...........and again anxious all winter so far.
It is just a great time..........wake up, grab a bite to eat, hit the water and fish all day. Come in.....shower and have a group supper.
everynight ended up in one of the cabins just relaxing, talking and making friends. The stories you hear are so entertaining and engaging.
I do not intend to EVER miss a Road Trip.......if it is in my control at all!
Send in that registration form and make the commitment.............I can just about guarantee you won't regret it!
I'm ready, the wife said go for it. I'm glad I stumbled on to this tonight. I live in central Va. So if anybody is thinking of going near by, maybe we could car pool.
Also does anyone need a roommate? It's just me, and I don't snore to loud!
I'm gonna get that registration form going tomorrow.
Shoot me a message
Send in your registration form and we will help with logistics.
Can anyone give me a rough estimate on what the trip will cost. Other than gas and food to and from, what are my expenses looking like while I'm there? I plan on finding a roommate, so say we split that cost and how much would I be giving my boater? I hope someone can help me figure this all up so I have a better idea of what I can do and what I can't do. Thanks in advance!
A lot of the cost is in Glenn's post. (Below)
I will let others post on what you should or shouldn't give the boater.
Last year I neither asked for or expected anything.....anything would help I guess.....but there may be unspoken protocol that I am not aware of..........that was my first trip.
$5 per provided meal......$15 ( 3 meals)
$15 ish Banquet supper
$15ish for supper at restaurant
$whatever for breakfasts and lunches (you can take food and prepare those)
$47/day for cabin
$26 for fishing license
I always factor 20% for unforeseen costs for food.
Hope to see you there.

A non-resident 7-day Alabama fishing license $26.00. Here's where you can get your license (scroll down to the "links" section).
Common QuestionsWho is invited?
On one of the evenings (yet to be determined) we will have our "banquet." This is when we have our speaker(s.) Dinner is on you that night.Do i need to bring a boat?
NO, you do not need a boat. Everyone is welcome, and everyone fishes! We hold random drawings (see schedule above) to pair boaters/non-boaters up.
To the best of my knowledge, no boater, while on the Road Trip, has ever accepted any payment to help out with the cost of the gas. Personally, I feel that if I'm on vacation, and am going to be running around the lake in my boat, I would be doing it with or without a co-angler. As a co-angler, you should make the offer to chip in for the gas, but I doubt that the offer will be accepted. Don't forget, we are on vacation, we are not competing in a tournament.
And what a vacation it is! Guys and gals from all over the States, just wanting to get together and have a good time!
I'm officially signed up to room with Dinky, Rhino and ProCrafter. Never let it be said that I will hang out with just any Tom, Dink and Larry.
Note to Long Mike: my registration form is a work in progress.

Anyway I'm coming regardless.

I actually still have that travel size one in my tool box. It's awesome for fixing a boost tube coupling.
Ok. So basically I can fly down from NC, rent a car, and be able to fish on a bass boat with you all? I have never done this before and interested in doing so. I obviously can't bring my kayak down there for such a long trip especially with other bass boats. ( hopefully I will get my first bass boat the end of this year). However until then I would love to do the road trip.

here goes what I do, your mileage may vary..... I am a boat so I will spare you that end of it.
1. whatever it cost you to get there, gas for your car, extra for flats/emergency. Being you are in WV I say $400 but I dont know what you drive.
2. your cut of the room ... plan on around your end being $300 if you stay all dates and split 4 ways. I say this just in case we dont resever enough to get full discount, plus a little padding never hurts.
3. $100 or so for food for the week, I eat GOOOD on the water. go to walmart and bring your own bread and meat, ritz crackers, peanut butter, goldfish, beef jerky, nutter butters, rice crispy treats, assorted nuts, slim jims, and assorted cheeses and sausages. at least 2 but probably 3 or 4, 24packs of diet coke, 1 case of bottled water...many people last year ate breakfast at a local dive, if you do you will have to account for that, I ate breakfast on the water while runnning the trolling motor... BRING YOUR OWN TP, hotel/resort TP is rough after the first 2 days..... you maybe able to do it cheaper, but nothing is worse than being hungry while trying to have fun, and will surprise yourself how much you actually snack if you dont plan on it.
maybe bring $40 extra to buy/trade baits, jigs, assorted tackle that you may run out of.
4.not really a need for boater gas... I had folks offer last year but refused to take any. I am there to explore and fish, not charge folks gas.... and if we trailer down to Pickwick we gonna make some long runs, its just part of the game.
5. whatever it cost to get you back home, I incuded this in the first gas number in #1.
some may see or do things different, but I like to plan and be prepared... my biggest expense is what I buy in preparation which I didnt talk about. I buy extra line, jigs, plastics, hooks, ect ect before the trip so I have everything for a week, I pack EVERYTHING in my truck and floating barge I call a boat. I could probably survive a month on what I bring, but I never WISH I would have packed something I left either. you are away from home for a week, there is no running back to your "tackle room/closet" until you get back home. Thats how I veiw it....... plus as a boater I can store more so if a hot plastic is catching them I will have extra to share......, until I get low then your on your own, LMAO.
so for just travel(depending on MPG), lodging, food for the week and casual perdiem. I say I would have $1000 in my pocket when I left the driveway as a non boater but that is ME and I do things different and dont want to have to worry, blown out tire, ect.
maybe other non boaters will chime in and let you know thier experience as well. I know jon (bassisaddicting) last year brought his own groceries and tackle room with him too!
always better safe than sorry, and have everything covered, both in tackle and extra "oh sh#t" money if you ask me. and dont forget its a week long fishing trip, TREAT YOURSELF!
but as for a boater I do:
$400 travel gas
$100-$150 groceries I eat good on the water!
$400 lodging (I am going early)
$500 boat gas/oil (I only burned $100-$150 all week last year, but I like to be prepared plus I see longer runs this year for whatever reason and I have a bigger boat this year)
couple hundo oh crap fund....... raffle money..... tackle the storm donation money
so the bottomline is use this outline and plan for YOU.
how much gas will you burn to get there? add a tank to that just in case..... How much can you eat while fishing for 8,10,12 hours? add a few more snacks to that...... add in your cut of the room...... gas to get back home(you have the extra gas money in case you misfigured)
I didnt include "entertainment" simply because after all day fishing, eating with the crew and chatting for 15 minutes, then making the tackle/food prep for the next day, all you want to do is SLEEP trust me!
so if you cant tell by the above ramble....... Yes, I will be eastbound and down, 8 wheels rollin!
and PS to the above barely understandable "mispelt rambles"
dont for get to buy an Alabama fishing license. google it and you can print it right there before you even leave the house.

I spent nearly 2k last year. But that was with an extra day and with a big boat being pulled by a big rig. That does not include the money spent on injectors and fuel pump trying to get home.

Thanks Chris. Last year was just a string of unfortunate events. The boost tube problem on the way up was just irritating. Nicole getting sick the day we left was unfortunate. And my own stupidity for not fueling at a major brand station where I got bad fuel and cost me 8 injectors, a fuel pump, and $400 tow bill. Not to mention the 3 hours layover in Gainesville waiting on said tow truck and my ride to come get the boat.
Barring an earthquake or plague of locusts, this year should be smooth sailing.

Brian, I appreciate the detailed information. I was really hoping to hitch a ride with someone coming through or near my area and cut the gas cost that way. I guess It's going to be more of a, ok I have the money kind of deal. This is why procrastinating is bad!
does anyone know the exact nature of the electric hook ups?
I see in the 1st post about the docks and such. I would prefer not to leave my boat in the water all week.
can you pull up to cabin and run an extension cord out the window?
does the parking lot have hooks ups?
also since many first timers ask and I didnt have exact numbers
april 27-may 3, 7 nights = $1053.37
april 30- may 4, 5 nights (actaul planned dates) = $865.98
includes tax and cleaning
you can whack those up anyway you want with your roomates (hopefully everyone can divide by 4)
Form just sent....
This will be my 2nd Trip.... last year's trip was the best week of fishing ever for me....looking forward to seeing everyone again.
For those "on the fence" about going.....
I was kinda nervous about going last year for a few reasons.
1) i didn't know anyone. and it was obvious from the posts that there were some pretty close friendships that had been made from previous trips, i didn't know if i would fit in or be "accepted". if it was kind of an "old boys" club or not. i can tell you...it is not. yes, there are some tight friendships (which is awesome)... but everyone...and i mean everyone....was really nice and made me feel "at home". i felt like i was "one of them" after the first night of the meet and greet..wine & cheese soiree.... and i hope to make the same type of friendships.
2) although i feel like i am a decent angler..i was intimidated by the knowledge of those going and wondered if my skills would "measure up". i can honestly say that was never an issue. every person i fished with was awesome... i felt like i fit in... and my skills weren't as lacking as i had been worried about. i learned alot.....
so... i guess what i'm trying to say... if you have any doubts about going...whether you will fit in or whether you are a good enough angler..... leave those concerns at home and come on.... you will have a great time and never want to miss another trip... i know i won't.
i can't wait!!!
one more thing...
i'm wanting to purchase a used BC rod... MH 7ft full cork handle.. i'm hoping one of the attendees might have one they can part with...
i'll post in the flea market... but hoping one of those going will have one. that way i can see it, hold it, etc. before purchasing.

I have never been....but looking at googlemaps it appears that each cabin has a driveway......so I would think we could run an extension cord out to the boat without issue.
The boat docks behind the cabins do not have hook-ups. You will have to run a power cord from the cabin if you want to dock the boat overnight. the parking areas do not have hook-ups either. Same deal with the power cord. There are covered slips near the boat launch area that DO have hook-ups.
so the "covered slips" are on dry ground, correct?
the explanation on the front page just says boat slips which means wet to me.
To me all slips are wet.....covered or otherwise.
Plagiarized Geography of a Slip
A slip is not as open as a dock. A slip is outlined by a pier on each side of the boat, unlike the dock, which has a pier on one side only. A slip can also serve multiple vessels within a single area, the shore-sides of which are lined with piers. The essential characteristic of a slip is that it's open on one end only, bounded by land or piers, which shelter the vessels in the slip on three sides to break up swells entering the harbor or marina.
lol, couldn't you just say, "yes they are wet"?
On 2/5/2014 at 9:44 AM, Brian Needham said:lol, couldn't you just say, "yes they are wet"?
No, He really can't.
On 2/5/2014 at 9:46 AM, FishinDaddy said:No, He really can't.
Actually he can.........after his fair share of the wine box.
Hey guys, cut me some slack! There are really ignorant people out there who call a boat ramp a slip, and I am just trying to unignorantize them. Most of those people live in Arkansas, Florida, and Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
Huuuuuh?
Slips. There are many types of slips. Some but not all do have a finger pier on each side of the boat. Some have one finger pier which serves two boats. Others have short finger piers. Yet others have no piers or floats off the main dock.
And, one final image, all the photos came from an image search of boat slips.
And then there are slips that could get wet.

Now you're talkin'!
mmmmmmmmmm.........sliiipss
A Mod is going to get you for all this slip talk....oh wait, never mind, the Mod brought it up....LOL (its all good Mike)
I did nothing wrong, I simply differentiated between slips and slips. I may have slipped a little on that one, but I felt I was on a slippery surface when I made the post. I'm going to assess myself two warning points.

I'm down to 71 days and 11 hours. But I'm leaving on April 19th.
Go here, and you can download your own free countdown timer. Once you set it up, it will appear on your screen when no window is open. When you download it, you can find the download by clicking on the start icon, then computer, then click on downloads. You will find the program there. Click to open it, then, fill in the "event" line, then program it for the date and time. Click on start, and you're good to go.

Gettin' Closer.....but not close enough!
If anyone needs any info on how to get around down here such as directions to tackle shops, eatin' holes etc. hit me up. Also I run a meat market at a local grocery store so I can get a halfway decent price on meat for the cooks in the group. Just let me know what and how much a few days ahead of time.
Wow! Thanks Greg!

Quite welcome!
Greg, first question. Using Google Earth, I spotted an eatery about a mile or so from the resort. It sorta looks like a truck stop, and could serve us well for our breakfasts. What's your opinion?
I think I know what you are talking about. Its prob. half a mile or less away actually. They do have a small deli. I haven't eaten there so I'm not sure of all the offerings. Its located at the corner of Highway 101 and Highway 184. There are a couple of convienence stores across the river that are that sort of thing too. They have biscuits and sandwiches. Nothing big.
I know it's still a ways off......but it seems closer when I look at the calendar and think of all the things I need to have done before the trip!
Still more excited than ever!
I'm looking for a Mom & Pop outfit that caters to folks who get up early and want a real breakfast. You know, eggs, grits, bacon, biscuits and gravy.
Looks awesome, just starting a new job so I won't be able to get time off yet. Man I wish I could go though. 2015 for sure!

Hmmm..Can't think of any that are real close by.. Killen Diner is fairly close..Its probably about 10-12 miles away. There are Hardee's and and Mcdonald's in Rogersville(about 7 miles away). Seems like there may be a place in Town Creek but I'm not sure. Haven't been through there in a while. Most of the other real close places are convienience stores that fix breakfast but not sure how much variety they offer,
Long Mike,
There is a place in Town Creek that has what you are looking for. It's called The Farmhouse.
Are they still open......I got a message number disconnected and a google search says they are 'closed'.
How about the joe wheeler park golf restaurant? Too high flalutin?
Hard times I guess with the paper mill closing? Did the mill close or is someone gonna buy them and keep them going?

For anyone on the fence about going, read the above, reread the above, and then read it again.
See you there!
Which paper mill is closing? The one near Pickwick State Park, or a different one?
The one in Courtland AL.On 2/10/2014 at 10:03 AM, Glenn said:Which paper mill is closing? The one near Pickwick State Park, or a different one?
Near Wilson AL
Glenn, I have never let you see one of Ghoti's Registration Forms. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds comes to mind every time I see a new one.
Courtland. Got it. That's sad, however it opens the door for new opportunities.

Yeah the smell could be bad at times. They offered some folks to re-locate to other plants. Also there is another plant of some kind supposed to be opening soon nearby there so hopefully some can find work there. But it will definitely be tough for a lot of folks.
other than the first night I never really noticed the smell.
of course I went to bed as early as possible too.SO I really just eat, fish, eat, sleep all week , in that order.
Did shower after the first night? Cause that would explain it!On 2/10/2014 at 10:36 AM, Brian Needham said:other than the first night I never really noticed the smell.
Just kidding......I know you did.
LOL, thats funny cause the first night I was standing on the balcony and asking myself what that smell was...... thinkning I had some serious BO kicking. Jon walks in and I ask him "do you smell that or am I that rank?"
he then explained what a paper mill smelled like, LMAO. after that I really never noticed it though..... but then again I smell West Memphis everyday so I am immune to most smells.

Okay, I pulled the trigger an will be attending, but I need help. I'd like to drive down and back, but I'd also like to share expenses.
Does anyone need a fourth for a cabin rental, or a second to share a room? Anyone in IL or WI willing to share the ride and expense going down (I'll supply transportation)? More than one would keep transportation expense even lower for all.
Hey, that's great to hear!
Has anyone heard from Kyakr lately?
I was wondering the same thing. I haven't see a post from her in a few weeks.
Checked her profile and she was last on the forum, Feb 7.
Nope.
If anyone is in contact with her (Kyakr), please let her know that I am trying to track her down. I have the information that she asked for.

Just found out I will not be able to attend my first road trip this year. One great reason is I will be leading my worksite's team in what is called the Relay for Life, it is a great fundraiser for the American Cancer Society and helps us remember those we have lost to cancer and celebrate those who have beaten this awful disease. It is a 24 hour event from the evening of May 2nd thru the evening of the 3rd. The other reason which I am not happy about is that my wifes friend is getting married and I have to go to the wedding that weekend as well. I hope you all have a wonderfull time and hope to catch it next year.

So far, a very disappointing turn-out. Come on folks, It's time to make a decision. There are folks who have room available in their cabins, so start broadcasting your needs on this forum if you are looking for a place to stay. Also, there are folks who say they are going to make the trip, but I haven't seen any Registration forms from them. The forms can be found in the first post on page 1 of this forum.
IT'S TIME TO ACT OR GET OFF THE POT! We have plenty of boat seats available for those of you without boats, so don't let that hold you back. Newbies to both the Forums and to bass fishing are welcome. Come on down!

If they did, I wouldn't need the handicap. I'm great at double digit drum.
At G'ville, I hooked and fought and ran around the boat at least a half dozen time a HUGE carp. Had to be over 20. I was fishing with Mike and Julie and I don't think we could have gotten it in the net. But it would have made for one heck of a photo. Remember that Mike? Or is this a fish story/dream???

All I remember is you constantly casting in the trees.
Kidding of course. I remember that. That was one big carp.
I wasted 20min. of tourney fishing fighting what I thought was a big bass. It ended up being a 30+in. pike. I knew beforehand I wouldn't make the cut without it, but I was certain I'd not only make the cut, but likely win big fish. Remember that Mike?
I'm still a possibility. Only issue I'm having is I'm unsure if I'll be off work. I've put in for the time off but won't know if it's approved for a while. My employer won't even look at it until 2 weeks before the requested dates.
I would bet that "carp" was a buffalo.

I was just wondering where to check in with all the members. Where all the events were to be held. Where to launch my boat. Etc. What's the town the resort is in ?
We meet the first 3 nights in one of the cabins or a place that is designated after we get there. There is a lot of communication while we are there. There is a boat launch very near the cabins. OK thanks for the info.
I have not registered yet. Trying to talk wife into coming with me. No luck so far. Know of anyone from Missouri wanting to share the trip and a room? I know I'm new here and no one really knows me but what better way to meet. I think I have until the 28 th to register?
You have until the 28th to reserve a cabin......after that they are released to general population.
While I think you can register for the road trip anytime.......I think they prefer as soon as you can so the folks providing meals on three nights know how many to plan for.
Just post here what your looking for travel and lodging wise and someone will respond or send that info to Long Mike or Alpster and they will try to coordinate if they can.
Papajoe222 is traveling down from north of you......not sure of his route....and was looking for some travel companion.
Holler if you have any more questions.
You can PM if you like.
it seems kinda of daunting the first time out but its not
if you get there early on wends just fish where ever you want to.... when you come in, you will see everyone milling around the cabins, just introduce youself to the first person you see and they will help get you squared away.
Last year, I had talked to my roommate prior and we meet at the hotel that morning.....fished all day and when we came in we said "we better go find the group" .
also once you get you form in I am sure you can Long Mikes or someones cell number to call once you get checked in your cabin.
its really not a big deal, when you show up it all magically falls into place.
Magically falls into place is a great way to say it.
It's really like that..........everybody is very friendly.
even this Brian Needham guy.
hard to believe but rumors say its true.
There is no shortage of ramps. You pick what's best for you, whether to launch at the resort and run your boat to where you plan to fish, or to find a ramp convenient to where you plan to fish.
If you want to fish below the dam in the southern section of Pickwick you'd best launch below the dam. Unless, you want the experience of using the lock to get from Wilson to Pickwick below the dam, and then again to return to Wilson.
Everything else will pretty much fall into place at the Wednesday night soiree.
Dinky and I will be getting there on Saturday, prior to the "official" start of the road trip. If it will help, I'll send you my cell number in a private message in early April. Once at the road trip, there is usually a hand out that has all those who are registered for the road trip and a contact phone number for each attendee.
OK. Great. Do I email my registration or snail mail it?
I sent mine as an attachment on an email. I've done it via snail mail in the past.
Since it has to be signed, you'll need to print it out and sign it. Then you can scan it into your computer and send it to Long Mike.
Thank you sir. Done. C u there.

Mac and anyone else coming for the first time or even, riding the fence.... I fly from Seattle, for the third time and even with the logistical task of arranging tackle, flights, connections and rental cars this has been a very pleasant set of events for me and a great way to test the waters on visiting our great fisheries.... Every year I seem to widdle down the price... so far I have airfare at $410. rental car at $200 and cabin shared rate at around $180 and some expenses, fuel, meals collectibles and I cannot find a fishing vacation for 6 days anywhere even near 2-3 times my costs!!! and I get to meet new/old friends, share techniques and learn new patterns!! Last year and a camcorder and a GoPro... Adding another GoPro type action cam for even more action video!!! So.... Look at what this trip offers... compare to guided trip prices and that should be all you need to decide!!! (Not a guided trip but folks here are pretty dang knowledgeable about these fisheries!!!)
YOU KNOW YOU WANT IT!!! COME ON AND GET IT!!!
I completely agree with you Procrafter. That's a grteat way to put it in perspective. We are trying to find a place to sleep. I have relatives in Huntsville. We might stay there if all else fails.
Anyone have any room in their cabins at doublehead?
I'm going to see about this year. Had to cancel last year due to an unexpected and unpleasant divorce and all that goes with that. This year much better but will be moving my elderly Mom in the next month or so. Also, will be buying a new house and moving myself again.....Oh Yeah, also met a new lady very unexpectedly after aforementioned divorce. Anyway after saying I'd never do that again guess who's getting married...not sure of date yet. So anyway I'm going to discuss this with her tonight and hopefully she'll come with me. If so I'll get you the forms tomorrow Mike. It's been too long, really would like to see y'all again. Saw Glenn at the classic Sunday and had fun catching up. Hope I can get it all worked out.

I'll be there! As if I needed anything else to make me more excited about the road trip this year!
WooHoo!
I'm on vacation from the fire dept, would love to go..I'm a no boat guy and also what is the lodging looking like? Wouldn't mind splitting cost on the lodging or helping with cost for boat gas or whatever..
Think I'm gonna sit down with the Chief and Capt this week and try some negotiations to see if they'll go ahead and approve my time off. If they approve it, I'll have to find someone to split some lodging with as well.
Great guys! Come on down! If you have a boat please bring it with you. We can always use more boats.
Boats. We need boats? Why. We gonna ski?

Thanks BG, but what are you talking about? Is it the closest place to the resort where we can get a hot Mom and Pop style breakfast?

You never have to say your teasing.........you only have to say when your serious.
I'm serious about this statement." I'm hardly ever serious."
Ladies and gentlemen, I have been trying fervently to locate a Mom & Pop (no fast food) restaurant that opens early enough to cater to fishermen who want a hot breakfast, yet is located no more than a ten-to-fifteen minute drive from the resort. The Doublehead will gladly cater breakfast, but we must guarantee a minimum of twenty-five people. In addition, breakfast will cost each individual about $12. I don't know about you folks, but $12 is a little too pricey for me, plus I doubt that most all of us will want to have breakfast. Therefore we can't guarantee twenty-five people. My hope is to find a place where the locals frequent; you know, where the farmers and ranchers hang out. No success yet. All help would be appreciated.
I think there is a place at the intersection of state hwy.'s 101 and 184. There ain't much in that area that I know about. I will check it out and report back.

Thanks! I know the place you are talking about, as I spotted it via Google Earth. It looks like a cross between a convenience store and a truck stop. I've tried to call them several times but got no answer.

I agree, a lot goes in to the planning. From choosing the destination with adequate facilities, Mike keeping up with us YAHOOS to sign up, pairing boaters and non boaters, lining up speakers etc..., Gary, Ronnie and Kent fixing meals and soirees, I'm sure I forgot stuff but you get the drift.
A hearty thanks to all involved in putting it together!!

In case anyone needs convincing. Here is an example of what can be caught on Wilson. This was caught a couple of weeks ago.

That is the biggest sm bass I have ever seen. Would you mind teling us the details? Like, what lure, how deep, structure, retrieve, etc. If not, that's ok but it'll make an old man very very sad!!! Congrats.
For those of you who are not familiar with the resort it is very nice. Cabins are along the water, there's nature trails and a skeet range. We rent a cabin every thanksgiving holiday there. I'm going to try to make this event all depends on work.

WOW ~!
Unquestionably one of the most impressive fish posted in a while.
A brown Bass that's 1/2 a gobie from smashing the 8 pound barrier is at the Very Top of the Slaunch Donkey Classification . . . .
A-Jay
Nice brown for sure. Would love to get 3 or 9 like that next week.
Pete
Well unfortunately that's not me in the pic. I started to mention that in my post but thought folks could tell it wasn't me from my profile pic. Saw it posted on a local fishing blog. Guy wouldn't say what he caught them with but that it was not an A rig. Just thought I'd give folks who were on the fence about coming a little incentive!
That fish would be a state record smallie in Indiana.
It'd be a record in a lot of places. Wow!!!
I'd just like to catch one 1/2 that size. Did I say Wow?!!!
Ok men.......... hate to do this but I am out.
this last ice storm has done me in at work. It leaves me to do 9 or so weeks of work in the remaining 6 before the roadtrip. I cant see it happening, so I am going to have to cancel.
I will be cancelling the cabin I had in the next few days, so if anyone wants it speak up before I cancel it.
let me know who wants it and we will just switch names on the reservation ( I have already paid the deposit and will eat that)
stilling going to try to bust it, and MAYBE make the weekend, but as of now I am out.
Awww come on now. If I'm willing to drag up my current job so as not to miss it you can too. I for whatever reason thought it was the first week of April. Being the first of May changes things. Hopefully, I will have gotten my lay off that week or the week prior to it. I can't deprive these meet fishing folks the opportunity to miss EVERYONES favorite Alabamian, and future presidential candidate. On 3/10/2014 at 11:13 PM, Brian Needham said:Ok men.......... hate to do this but I am out.

Thanks Long Mike. C u there.
Long Mike, Staggs grocery on Huntsville road in Florence has the best breakfast in the area. It is out of the way from Wilson lake but close to the ramp at McFarland park. They open at 5:30 am.
Thanks Lazeebum.

Not yet. 36 more days for me.
It's going to be a busy 36 days for me. On the 22nd I'm headed to Lake Baccarac, Mexico for a week. Then on Apr. 6th, I'm headed to Toledo Bend for a week. It's tentative at this time, but after I get back from the Bend, I'm hoping to sandwich in a couple of days of fishing with Bighead on Lake Fork before heading out for the Road Trip. I am much too well bred to say anything like "Eat your hearts out." I would especially never say such a thing to my Northern Brethren, who see nothing but white at this time of year.
Dang Long Mike. I thought I was lucky going to Gunnersville. You got me beat by a mile. Good luck, be safe and take picts.

Hey Mike, hope your boat springs a leak and your 12 lber breaks off right at the boat. Other than that, I hope you have a great trip!
Ronnie
I'll be at Grand Lake O the Cherokees by tomorrow night and spend the week with three of my children and their kids. Go south every spring break for a week with whichever kids want to come along. Still trying to juggle my time for Wilson but it is in my busy season so it will be a last minute decision. Hopefully me and my youngest son (35) will be able to surprise everyone! Hope all you fellas enjoy, Spring is upon us!!

Sent my application in yesterday, hope that's ok
I havent done a lot of research on Wilson Lake. Is the structure/cover base basically the same as Pickwick was?
On 3/15/2014 at 3:43 AM, Siebert Outdoors said:I havent done a lot of research on Wilson Lake. Is the structure/cover base basically the same as Pickwick was?
on navionics it looks like a big 60 foot deep ditch with little main channel structure, there is some but not near as much as Pickwick ...... through other readings and PMs it seems to be all creek related, some being deep and some being shallower..... and some being loaded with structure, some very lacking in structure.
Wilson is however rocky much like Pickwick, best I can gather, perhaps without the grass.
This is my impression based on map readings, I am sure the more local guys that have signed up can FAR Exceed what "think"
Thanks Brian. One other note, Typical Water Clarity. Which is the same I would think as Pickwick was.

Wilson fishes more like a Highland Reservoir. There is no grass that I am aware of. Only type of vegetation is shoreline weedbeds in places. Lots of boat docks.

With Mother Nature's cooperation, I hope to be busy for at least the weeks prior to the trip. Muskegon MI trip the second week-end of April for walleye and down to Tunica MS the following week for a little gaming and crappie fishing.
Hopefully I can keep myself busy with honey-dos and local fishing enough to pass the time quickly.
This trip will be my first to a highland reservoir in 15yrs. Table Rock was a frequent destination back then, but since then I've only targeted natural lakes. Really looking forward to my re-initiation!
We are less than 45 days away!
WOOHOO!
My trip just got way easier..... Just won $500.00 on the Mega Millions Lottery!!! 44 DAYS AND COUNTING!!!! :respect-059:
Way to go
Sent in my application Friday jus wondering if it's been received yet?
It's time for me to begin menu planning for the Soiree. Sometime soon, let me know if you plan to be there Wednesday evening. Respond here, or PM, if you would please. I need to know how much chow to buy.
I'll have sandwich bar setup.
Roast beef, ham, a variety of breads, a variety of sliced cheeses, lettuce, sliced onion, sliced tomato, mustard, mayo, horseradish and chips.
I'll have a veggie tray and a fruit tray.
I'll have a selection of cheeses and crackers.
I'll have pickles, olives, peppers, etc.
I'll have a case of wine and a cooler full of beer.
If you have any requests, toss them in the hat. I'm not a caterer, but if enough people request the same thing, I'll make it happen.
I'll be there. Hope I can find an appropriate ensemble.
Once again, I will not be charging anybody for the food and drinks. I will be taking donations for Glenn's Tackle the Storm Foundation. All proceeds will go directly to that fine cause.
I'll accept any assistance anybody is willing to give. Mostly for the cleanup afterward. I'll be setting everything up during the afternoon, and will not ask anybody to give up any fishing time. I can handle the setup myself.

Muley pronounced 'moo-lee'
I like it.
Just got word from Glenn. He has reserved a banquet/meeting hall for the Wednesday evening Soiree. That's great news. Last year's gathering was more than crowded, with about 20 people in a small cabin. There will be more people this year, and the cabins aren't that much bigger, so the extra space will be awesome.
I still haven't heard from some of you about your attendance Wednesday evening. I'd like to have an accurate count sometime soon. I need to start purchasing the non-perishable items.
I'll be there Gary, I wouldn't want to miss it.
Reconfirming that Jeannie and I should be there sometime late afternoon.
Also, I'd be happy to pick up anything you need and bring it with us to save you the time.
Mike
Thanks Mike
And, thanks Mike
I haven't heard from them, but I'm assuming RoadWarrior, Long Mike, 00mod, Glenn and Keri will be there.

The Coots' won't be rolling in until Thursday.
Are we there yet?
I can't wait for this trip. I keep dreaming of giant smallmouth.
You??? I haven't caught a smallie since 2011 !!!! I haven't needed a little blue pill since I sent in my application and I'll be spending the next three weeks just trying to find my skin as I jumped out of it in anticipation of this trip.
Me too!!
I told Mrs Mike I'm not leaving the state without hooking up with one.
Mike
Yes, Keri and I will be there.
Ok like a dummy I put an incorrect address for the registration form got return to sender back and got the correct address and mailed it back yesterday..
I'm back from an unforgettable trip to Mexico. MamphisFF, welcome to our humble group. You are going to have a ball. I await your Registration Form with the revised address.
Just a word for all potential attendees; the resort held our block on the cabins for an extra couple of weeks, but have now been forced to let them go to the general public. If there is anyone out there who is still interested in joining us, you need to make a decision, and quickly.
Less than 30 days now!
WOO HOO!
i cannot wait!! i too am hoping to hook up with a big smallie....
i'm sure this is gonna be another great time..
papajoe....did you mention a "little blue pill"?.....thinking about this trip....works just like one....or so i am told how one is supposed to work.
(i couldn't resist)
Blowing the motor up on the boat yesterday may put a damper on our RoadTrip plans. I am so sad right now
I cant wait untik i get a bass boat and go to these fishing trips! I,dont think ill, have enough in 29 days tho

The next 29 days are going to be crazy getting geared up for this trip..... It will be here before you know it. I've been sitting on the front porch for a week waiting to be picked up to go.

I was wondering, to those of you who are bringing your wives or significant others, will they be fishing??
I ask because Mrs Mike would like too, just not all day everyday ( if that is what is planned)
She'd be just as happy hanging around the lodge and taking advantage of what it has to offer, or seeing any local sites ( if there are any) for the 4 days we're there.
But being the kind, thoughfull, considerate, understanding guy that I am, I thought I'd ask if anyone else has other plans.
Thanks

Great list of folks going.
You should join us if you can........its a great time.
Some very good story tellers in the list of this year's attendees!
I'm coming prepared this year with a more than adequate supply of Rage Tail Menaces. What color? Pumpkin with gold and purple flakes. They will be rigged on the Gamakatsu 1/8 ounce wacky jig hook. Button the nose tight to the weight. Add a drop of super glue to hold it there and you're good to go for several fish.
It's a great weedless presentation.
This is a Rage Tail Grub, but it's rigged the same way. I rig the flippers in the horizontal position. Big O suggested trying them in a vertical arrangement.
This is a Jackall wacky jig hook. Cannot use the Gamakatsu in MASS because the weight is lead. Wish I could because the vertical shank to the eye catches a lot of grass. The photo is just to show the way I rig the bait.
My wife isn't going to fish all day or every day. She enjoys seeing the sites, historical places, horsback riding etc.

Not sure what Susan will do. She enjoys fishing but probably could be enticed by the other ladies to do some alternate activities.
By the way (Long) Mike, she's my fiance, she likes that status as opposed to just the friend designation. The ladies seem to be particular about these things. Just sayin...
This is pretty funny....took her crappie fishing last year, she had a great time but decided the Zebco 33 is the greatest reel ever (for her). Soooo...I bought her a couple pink ladies models and have one of them paired with a 6' St Croix Legend Elite Rod (I bought it years ago and seldom use it). Would like to hear Roadwarrior's commentary on the best uses for this combo....

I wasn't sure how to list Susan. I figured that "his latest Squeeze, Susan" wouldn't work, so I used "friend." Anywho I have corrected my mistake. Apologies to Susan.

No problem....no apology necessary, I Kind of like "HIS LATEST SQUEEZE" but suspect that would have put us both in trouble. Actually she's a really good sport. I told her about all this and she had a good laugh.

Buddy and I are in for the banquet.
we can do that... that is another thing that is great about this trip. everyone has no problem telling what they use to catch them with.
it is not a "double secret".
the whole trip/idea is to have fun and everyone catch as many fish as possible.
i am heading to BP this weekend. if anyone wants/needs me to pick anything up...let me know.

I am going out on a limb and say the standard...... Green pumpkin, watermelon, ect
you can always dip it in JJs for a color change.
dont forget the Zoom magnum shakeyhead worms in Watermelon Candy! lots of guys used straight watermelon with the tail dipped in JJ as you probably remember.
and above all dont forget the JIGS!!!!!!
now a local question....... the more and more I read the more and more I see the color plum come up in TN river chain discussions..... is this prevelant color I have missed?
I'll be there for the banquet.
Plum and red are both good colors for the entire TN river chain.
A couple of years ago I tore them up on Kentucky Lake with a red 5" GYCB hula grub on an Evo Shake2 jighead.

Good ol green pumpkin works everywhere Its a slayer on Pick.
I'm going to bring a bunch of Menace's. They are like Smallie candy!!

and thanks Rhino....now the baitmonkey is sending me for grubs, menace(s), and weighted wacky hooks... can i get some suggestions on colors for the plastics?
The Menace: Pumpkin with purple and gold flake, Watermelon with red flake (it also has black but not in the description), black with red flake (might be called neon).
My standby is watermelon with black and red flake, but there are times other colors work as well or better. Start out with my recommendation, then include some of your favorites.
If you like creature baits, a pack or two of Yamamoto Flappin Hogs can be used as a drop shot, a trailer, or rigged as per the picture I posted. The glue is an absolute must on the Flappin Hog. Like most Yamamoto baits they are not durable.
One other bait is the Strike King finesse worm. I like the four inch version, but if you like larger baits a seven inch finesse worm is available. They float and make a great shaky head bait. Just in case, do not mix any elaztech bait such as the finesse worm with your other plastics. They will melt together in a nasty mess.
One more recommendation for the elaZtech finesse worm. Open a safety pin, straighten it leaving the circle intact and heat it over a flame (candle works well) and melt a hole along the center line to a depth of about 3/4" deep. This allows you to slide it over a barbed holder like those on the Buckeye Shaky Head Spot Remover. Without that, it is impossible to make the barbed holder penetrate the nose.
This bait is a rare variation from my good old watermelon red, though I do have some. My color of preference for the SK finesse worm is coppertreuse.
As long as you don't lose it, you'll never need to replace it. They are indestructible. I've caught over thirty bass on a single worm before losing it to a hang on the bottom.
and for cranks...... remember Randy Haynes blew away the everstart on pickwick while we were there.... 6xd in sexy shad and citrus shad
also the Surrat brothers who caught 23-25# a day in the same tournament, they locked through to Wilson every morning and thier fish were caught on a big hammer in the "sara's shad" color.
The Surrat brothers fininshed #2 and #3.
Susan and I are in for the banquet
i can see a menace on one of Siebert's shakey heads.... might be a good setup..
how about Redbug as a good color?
Don't know about the redbug. You'll have to ask the fish.
If it's a color you've been successful with, why not?
My wife and I are in for the banquet as well. Getting excited!!!!!
So are we only fishing for just smallies or large mouth and smallies?

Both.
Beckie and I will make the banquet.

the water is populated with all three..... largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass.
I think I caught 75+/- fish last year. Out of those 8-10 were smallmouth and 3 were spots.
the Smallmouth bite is going to be a timing deal, as they are now moved up, and by the roadtrip they will probably be moved deeper....... but it all really depends on current and many other factors.
some guys got into a 30 or so smallmouth day last year, but I cant remmeebr who...... might have been Dinky or Procrafter.
you might not catch one all week or you might be on them ALL week.... that's the fun in fishing such a diverse lake!
How do you fish a Senko on this lake?

anyway you want!!
I hear Glenn gives lessons.....

You can use any brand of rod you want but you have to use a Shimano reel....otherwise they won't work. BTW...any rumors that a Lew's reel will work are false!!

Thanks Rhino, I wondering about just that.

Here's what I'm thinking about bringing / throwing (I think they'll be relatively shallow mostly post spawn):
Topwater - Buzzbait, Pop R
Cranks - Sq Bills and some Series 5 type to get a little deeper if need be
T Rig - Lizards, Baby Brush Hogs
Jigs - 1/4 finesse jigs, 3/8 football jigs, shakey head
Spinnerbait
Grubs (incl menace)
What is everyone else thinking?? Starting to get really fired up!!!
I'll probably not be too different then that.
Topwater, Sammy
Crank Squarebill
Shaky head menace
Jig 3/8-12
Spinnerbait 3/8
Bluegill U2 Swimbait
Bring it all boys........ you got an entire cabin to store it in!!!!
if I were going this is what I would have rigged when I launched my boat:
3/4oz jig
1/2 oz jig
1/8 oz shakey
1/4oz shakey
3/8oz shakey
dt10
5xd
6in bull shad
senko weightless ( I learned that lesson)
and work out from there.
IMO the beauty of the TN River the first week in May is they will be in all 3 stages, pre/on bed/and post so catch 'em how ever you are comfortable........ and learn/build confidence in a new technique while you are at it.
Last year I walked away being a MUCH better shakeyhead fisherman and finally learned how to fish a senko(always fished it too fast)
so throw it all in your trunk, you'll use it LOL
I'm only bringing one rod and a box full of Spooks. Why? you guys think I'll need something else?
Wait, it's April 2.................................Never mind. I can't bring it all, but half a dozen combos and a dozen 3700s, my boat bag full of plastics and ........................... How much room in your truck Mac?
