So today, while I was dragging a worm around the Ohio River, I catch someone's old snagged line, and as I'm reeling it in, I see something odd wrapped up in it. I get it to the dock, and sure enough, it's an oyster! Now, I've pulled in a lot of strange things, but this is something I had never seen before around here. Didn't even know there were oysters in this part of the country. I did a little online searching, and it turns out these things are endangered. Of course, this one was dead, just a shell really, but still pretty cool. I actually brought it home. Been thinking about setting up a minnow tank, and this'll make a cool decoration.
Hell I have a scar on my nose and one on my chest from those things in the Ohio river. I was diving off a boat about 100 yards off the front of one of the islands in the Parkersburg pool. Dove a little too deep and hit a shell bed. Bled like a stuck pig. If you ever walk the islands you will find hundreds of shells.
I guess it must depend on where you are fishing. Catching a clam happens quite often to me.

Really? I have seen zero up here. Not on a beach or anything.
The front of Neal island right behind the mall is covered in them. A few years ago some guys got caught taking them and were fined big time. Blennerhassett used to have a bunch but the put rip rap through most of the island.
I cast a cast net once in a saltwater Creek trying to get bait. When I pulled it in there was a Big redfish in it.The weird thing was that it was the head and skeleton only.
I was fishing with a friend of mine and he caught a bag of grapes. When asked about it, he replies "I kept the bag & released the grapes".
Ive been cat fishing and reeled up a clam about the size of a jaw breaker. Darn thing clamped onto my hook! Ive caught beer/soda cans, a fork, and a small tire. Welcome to the Tennessee River!
Once while grinding a crankbait along the bottom my lure came back with a five dollar bill impaled on the treble. Who says it does not pay to fish?
A folding lawn chair
I reeled in snapping turtles twice. Once was about 6-8lb turtle on 4 lb microcaster.
Hooked into a pretty big snapping turtle once, luckily he got off by himself. I have also caught tons of mussels on lures but it happens enough I don't consider it a weird occurrence.
My friend caught a cowboy boot once.It was his FIRST CAST ever bass fishing.I nearly fell out of the boat laughing at the suddenly dejected look on his face.I told him"Quick cast over there again and maybe you'll catch the other one!!"

I don't usually draw attention to unintentionally funny misspellings, typos, or the like. But, this one made me spit soda all over my computer.
I have caught one blue heron, three ducks, a broom, a plastic owl, many water toys, socks, and two swimsuits. Unfortuanately i have also caught way to many giant, angry aligator snapping turtles bent om seperating me from my fingers (or hand)
Pie pan.
Complete spinning rod setup.
1/8oz. rooster tail in 20' of water...
Catt has us all beat he snagged a body
lol, woops. I'll fix that typo
If you're of a certain age, you will remember cartoons showing a guy reeling in a 5-buckle overshoe. I caught one on a crankbait.
I also caught an aluminum folding ladder, on a senko. Didn't even feel the bite.
Haven't caught much weird stuff, but I can only imagine what I've gotten snagged on that was too heavy to bring in. Weirdest thing I have reeled in is a complete rod and reel combo. Looked like it was 50 years old. I released her unharmed and she quickly returned to the depths. Funny thing is, in the 10 minutes prior, I had landed two 30"+ northern pike. All three, rod/reel and both pike fought EXACTLY the same way. I was convinced I had another nice northern on while reeling in the combo.
I've caught clams, turtles, frogs, but my most memorable catches have been a domestic goose and a cowboy hat.
I am assuming the domestic goose wearing the cowboy hat was caught in texas...
A few weeks back I caught a small rock.
I still have it.....thinking about getting it mounted ?
I have caught a lot of strange fish while fishing in South Florida. One of those is the bigmouth sleeper.
i have caught a fishing rod, seagull, umbrella, other lures, I'm sure there are others I can't think of right now.
the craziest thing i have ever seen was my buddy caught a large, black "toy". Use your imagination.

I have snagged many oysters over the years, a few of which I ate on the spot, and one of which had a small pearl. However, I believe what you are holding is a clam shell.

Oyster
I caught an a-rig that I still use, and a lews reel that I still use
Caught a duck on the last hook on a trot line one time. He hooked his leg swimming I guess. The hook wasn't baited. He was the worst catch and release I've dealt with. Unhappy guy.
I was cranking some brush once and snagged a 5 foot long water mocassin. That was not fun. Thought I foul hooked a bass and it was a snake.

More info needed on this one. How did you get it off the hook? Did you cut the lure off?
I netted a fire extinguisher floating on a river after a flood. Hooked an aluminum ladder after a record flood in 2011. A week later in the same spot I hooked a binder full of pages of parts explosions for an airplane engine. Most of the papers were too waterlogged to make out but some were for Lycoming plane engines. After searching the shoreline I found pistons and metal engine rings. Lawn chairs and BBQ grills are the norm after a flood.

Luckily it was winter time so it was very lethargic. Once I realized what it was it took about 30 seconds of serious rod shaking to get it unsnagged. Bad thing was, I was in a tournament AND it was the only type of crankbait I knew worked that I had with me. I was not fixing to cut my line, if it didn't come off with shaking I was gonna have to resort to paddle slapping it. Thankfully for me and the snake it didn't come to that.
My grandmother use to own a house in Panama City Beach and we would go down there every summer and fish off the Russell-Fields Pier. Years ago we was down there fishing and I felt a bite and set the hook, as I looked over the edge of the pier I seen it. A d**n sea snake, some guy seen me reeling it in and ran over and was like "very dangerous, cut line" as he reached into his pocket and pulled out his knife to hand me. Luckily as I got it onto the pier the hook came out and I just pushed it back into the water.
I have caught panty hoes, toilet paper, chairs, clams, full rugs, rods, that sort of garbage, but the grossest was hooking a big turd on a Senko. That stupid thing wouldn't flick off either. I had to get a stick, and probably made 100 casts before touching the hook again. That called for a good hand wash

On more than one occasion on a lake in Arkansas that will remain nameless, we had water moccasins follow a lure thrown near shore out towards the boat. Seems they are aggressive in the spring...
Also on more than one occasion, my grandfather then let the swimming snake have both barrels from his .410 shotgun...this was in the late 60s, early 70s and Grandpa is long gone...
Not caught with my rod. I was fishing with my dad last year just after he bought a new $200 anchor. After we got done fishing we went to pull the anchor and it was extremely hard. It took both of us to get it to the surface. Once we got it to the boat we saw that it was wrapped up in an old bed spring. I thought for sure that we were going to lose it.
I caught a giant watermelon rind a few weeks ago on my whopper plopper. Though I had a good one...it looked so much like a fish...
Other stuff - freshwater clams, seagulls, plastic bags filled with muck, a purse, my sister's neck...

HA!
I just caught a frog, with a frog. Weird.
I caught a big prawn shrimp once on a little piece of dead shrimp.I must have snagged it because I didn't see a mouth ? on it.
I also watched a 4 pound bass try to swallow a one pounder I was reeling in .He hung on for a few seconds and let go.
Was fishing wacky style senko and hooked a hook that was stuck in the side of about a 5 pound carp. Man did that thing fight! Thought I had a monster smallie. I got the fish on the boat and removed the hook that was stuck in it's side then safely released.

A long time ago...early 80s...I foul hooked a king salmon on Lake Michigan that went about 18 1/2 lbs...about dead center in its side...it was a better fight than a 50" musky, or a 15 pound bass...or about anything we can imagine...it was a solid 40 minute battle (I was on shore, not in a charter boat)...that ran me down to seeing my spool on a saltwater spinning rig twice....and with 30 years perspective...I'd have rather had a short fight where I let it go...
...but it sure was tasty smoked...
I caught a Quantum Octane baitcasting combo a couple of weeks ago using a chatterbait... Quantum is sending me a couple of new parts for it... Looking forward to getting some line on it and testing it out.. It looks almost brand new..
I have two. This past weekend on the chickahominy river I pulled a blue crab in on my jig. Little guy had grabbed onto the trailer and just would not let go.
The second was a few years ago on Lake Hartwell. We were striper fishing and hadn't caught anything all week. On thursday morning I was throwing the cast net at shad schools, and came up with a decent sized hybrid AND a small striper. First two fish of the week caught in a cast net. It was hilarious when I got to tell everyone I skunked them with a cast net.
On maybe my second trip out in my kayak I snagged a monster blue crab by the back of his shell. It took me a bit to get him off without getting pinched. Crabbing without a license in MD is taken very seriously and every moment he was in the boat I expected a warden to pop out of the weeds and ticket me.
I have caught a couple blue crabs in a canal that is 100% freshwater and this canal is +15 miles away from the ocean.Never a dull fishing trip in Florida , the fishing capital of the world.
I hooked a rope once that was tied around the neck of a dead foal. Talk about foul smelling.

Yikes. You win. That's nasty.
I've caught all the standards turtles, snakes, rocks. The best one I've ever witnessed was in a evening bass tournament at low light a team running a shoreline beside us caught a raccoon. The guy tossed a spinnerbait towards shore and it hung up in some brush. While trying to yank it out the coon grabbed it and hooked it's paw. That was the funniest thing I've ever seen watching the coon get reeled in. The guy finally got him loose with a couple jerks of the rod by the boat. To tell the truth I was hoping he was dumb enough to swing him over the side and watch all heck break loose. Lol

The coon probably would have been the last one left in the boat. LOL
The weirdest catch I probably had was when I was about 6 years old. I was fishing at a paylake with my parents and aunt and uncle. I was playing around and cast out a tiny jig. Being young and not the best at casting my casts had plenty of air time. There were lights and bugs flying everywhere. I guess that had drawn some bats in. Apparently a bat had honed in on my jig thinking it was a large insect and it plucked it from the air. The weight of the jig must have thrown it off because it tumbled into the water. I was freaking out and so was everyone around me, but the guy who owned the paylake came down in a pair of gloves picked up the bat, removed the hook and it flew away. He turned and walked back to the bait shop like it happened all of the time.
Old thread but I had one today.
While fishing the Susquehanna for smallies I nailed a "stickerel"......hooked on to what I thought was a snag but then it started to move.....fought like a good size smallie moving back and forth under the water......got it to the surface and it was a piece or 2x4 with a small piece of plywood nailed to it......caught in the current I swore it was a fish....both my buddy and our guide Mike roared....true story

LOL .They can fool you . I have caught sticks in the middle perfectly balanced so they wiggle like a fish .
Stickers huh, that's great!
i caught a tool box the other day
A fishing pole with a dead bass on it! Given the increase of kayakers, I suspect it was one of theirs........additionally, I witnessed a kayakers loosing a pole while playing with a birdsnest....he did however use another pole to hook it......
caught an octopus inside a beer glass
This one has always been a head scratcher for me. I was catfishing in the rain. I tossed out a small section of hot dog weiner and stepped back under some shelter to wait. I saw my rod bend and went to set the hook. I could feel a short fight, then it changed to a little dead weight drag. I reeled up a dead catfish head, hooked in the mouth. I could understand if it was freshly killed, that a turtle had bitten it off, but it was dead a while. It was nasty with glazed over eyes. The only thing I can imagine was a turtle was munching on a dead cat and I dropped a nice fresh Oscar Meyer in his face. I told my parents because I was a kid and they declined to believe my story. I asked them why I would make up such a stupid lie.
My dad and I caught the same bass. Not consecutively, but at the same time. It bit my worm, swam right over and bit his and we both reeled it up. Only time I've caught less than one bass, but more than zero. I think we threw it back because it was such a rare occurrence. Back then we didn't throw much back. My dad had the idea that if you didn't eat it, you didn't really catch it. Old bucket brigadier. I miss him badly.
giardia. it was not fun.
I caught a snagged line somebody else had attached to a snapping turtle 2 weeks ago.
Seagull
Crayfish
Clams
Rock
3 Mudpuppy Salamanders Ice Fishing (All last winter) Those things love a vibrating blade-bait!
Probably a pigeon that flew right into my cast and into
a tree. Pigeon flew away unharmed...can't remember
what happened to the lure, whether I retrieved it or
if it was too high in the tree to get back.
Just a couple of days ago I hooked a 10-12lbs soft shell turtle. Shakey head senko- right in the mouth. At first I felt a good thump. Set the hook- I'm like oh man it's a good one, get the net please " 10 cranks in- "ah man I don't know it feels weird " get it up to the boat, rod flexed over good and it slowly surfaces...... it was at least 25" across.
My Son!!
Several years ago my son and I was crappie fishing, one of us got a bite and some ways we got hooked up together and we both was in a fight with, what we thought was a biggun! We both jerked each other around for a little bit until we figured out what was going on. We had a good laugh.

My dad caught one about that size once, I remember that it was a heck of a fight!
Strangest catch for me was a frog with a frog, a big 'ol ticked off snapping turtle, my middle finger my buddy caught the back of my head once when we were teenagers, luckily for me the hook was going fast enough it just ripped through the skin instead of getting stuck in it. Luckily for him I can't swim or I would have drowned him!
You guys seen those sportbrella things parents bring to soccer matches for their kids? Caught one jigging off of a pier. Thought I had a HUGE fish. Needless to say, I was a little disappointed.

Definitely a clam. I come from the 'land of oysters' and if that's an oyster, it's the weirdest one I've ever seen.
Maybe not so strange but always catching frogs around Lilly pads when trying to catch bass.
When I was a kid fishing in the river I grew up near, a small 3" painted turtle bit onto my line and didn't let go. The little guy was hanging on about 8" above the hook. When I first saw it I thought it was a leaf until I reeled it all the way in to me!
Caught a huffy racer as a kid (the bicycles). in a shallow lake near a park. Looked pretty new so I took it home and my dad fixed it up for me. Rode that thing for most of my childhood. Was a d**n good bike.
My thanks to the kid who was trying to impress his friends and lost control of his Huffy. I benefited greatly.
So, I managed to catch a large blue crab on a rattle trap while fishing the Rehobeth Bay in Delaware. My wife has caught a piece of plywood with metal roofing on it, a pair of pants, a clam shell, and multiple lures. Including an ultra light combo all set up on the Potomac. I caught a large surf fishing set up on the Shenandoah one day. We have found a whole host of stuff. We clean up on bobbers. If anyone wants some let me know. We usually recover 20 throughout the year.
I had a client hook a semi truck passing over the alligator alley canal - She had a senko on - burned the drag up real quick.

My son caught a frog a few weeks ago. That in itself wasn't too odd, but he managed to catch it using a plastic casting plug. He was practicing casting with his little Cars fishing pole, and the frog either got mad that something foreign invaded his space, or thought he'd hit the jackpot of a nice mouth-sized fish. Either way, he bit down HARD and my poor son freaked (he thought he'd hurt the frog). I gently shook the rod and the frog hopped away.
One of those times when I wished I had a camera because in hindsight it was hysterical.
I used to do alot of fly fishing and have caught a bird and a bat, both took the fly out of midair on a backcast. It's not all that uncommon actually, although when I tell the story everyone who isn't a fly angler can't believe it. The other thing I caught was unidentified and still gives me the heebie-jeebies a little. Night fishing (wading) in the Fox River in Geneva, IL, I hooked and played something large, which I think was an eel. It rolled once but as it was dark I couldn't for sure say what I saw, but the image is burned in my brain. I was not disappointed when it got off.
I also "caught" a starfish once.
I caught a whole bunch of bass one day. For me this would be considered a strange catch ?

caught a 3 inch bluegill on a 3 and a half inch popper last week.
I caught either a Tilapia or some kind of carp, not really sure, on a 2.5 inch squarbill

Haha that's to cute
Clothes, rod and reel combo (cleaned it up and it works fine to this day), lures, rocks, etc. My "oddest" was on a charter boat off the coast in Florida as a kid. Something hit, and I started fighting. And let me tell you, it was HEAVY! At first I had no idea what it was, only that it must be something HUGE! A few minutes later the captain is laughing and playing with the throttle, which I assumed was to help me. Then it got closer, and I finally saw it. Looked like a giant jellyfish! I was totally confused and then everyone was laughing and cheering me on. Get it to the boat, finally, and it was a freaking huge, thick plastic bag. I had hooked the side of it and it was opened up like a freaking umbrella. It put up 10 times the fight of the 'cuda I caught a little later.
My niece takes the cake though. She hooked a bluegill...via the line that had already passed through it where it had swallowed a hook! So she literally snagged the line that he had passed and drug him in by his butt!
Caught a ~3' water snake today. Had him landed and was trying to figure out how to get the hook out when he just let go of the lure and shot off. I dragged him through like 10-15' of water and lifted him up like 3-4' and he held throughout all that. Must have really wanted that Skinny Dipper.
In Tenn we call Em WaterDog's like you catch in a small branch. It was caught RedEye fishing on a 1/16 Oz Black Fly. When we got it in Junior My First cousin shot it with a pistol & then took it off. I think i've seen 3 of them all in the upper end of SoakCreek in SpringCity Tn. It was about 16 In Long & about 3 In around. I never dreamed one could get that big, if i hadn't seen it i wouldn't of believed it MySelf. It makes you wonder just how big will they get.
My wife hooked Marble Falls Dam the first time I took her fishing for white bass.
