I never noticed this until I started fishing with a partner, and then noticed the pro's doing it. Do you have a hookset catchphrase?
Some people say 'Gotchya!' some pro's always say 'Biggun!'.
Every time I do a hookset and get a fish on, I always find myself saying 'Here we go!' without any control, I always say it without fail haha.
What do you say?
I think I tend to be pretty quiet on the hook set. Once a fish is on the line I'm all business.
I'll usually say "fish on" or "there it is".
There it is for a normal feeling fish and Here we go if it feels big right away.
I guy I've been fishing with a guy forever that always says Maybe and looks up at his rod to make sure it's not a snag. Then when the fish is about to the boat he will finally admit he has one on.

When I use to be big into ice fishing, sitting in out shanty waiting for a tip up, as soon as we saw the flag, all four of my buddies and I would come busting out fighting each other to get to the tip up first, all while screaming "FISH ON!" of course slipping and falling on our ***** all the way there.

Or if you're my brother, just set the hook on every snag, weed, bump. I swear, he sets the hook if a fly lands on his rod tip.
If I'm fishing with someone else, I say "got one." Myself, it's usually "there's one."
I usually say "here we go" as well, then after I feel the weight I'll say either , "big one" or "di**"
There he is.
"I hope it's not a northern".
Either my best James Hetfield impression with "Yeaahh", or "Ha, not weeds." One is loud and the other is very quiet. You decide.

same except both when I'm fishing with someone, by myself I usually don't say much.
"FISH ON!!"
"Got one"
I'm not sure what I say? I know I say something, especially in a tournament situation, so my partner knows there's a fish on.
FISH ON!
Dang , he spit it out .
Gottem
i think it's usually "there it is"
i think i might start going full Iaconelli and just say "GIANT" no matter how big or small....
Most of the time I just say "fish" and if it feels big I always include "Hope it's a bass".
One of my favorite Mexican Guides says . . .
"Uh-Oh, No Good. Get the net."
A-Jay
"There he is." And if I think it's a good fish, I usually follow it up with a Roland Martin, "SON."
"YUPP"
I say, "Oh yea!" when I hook a big one.
I usually scream "FINALLY!!!!" Truthfully I just say "there's one". One time I was fishing with "That friend" (check out that thread) and after catching my 10th bass and he hadn't caught one I hooked into another and before I could say it my friend said it for me. lol
I don't unless I am in a tournament, and even then it is just so my partner casts there incase of a school of fish.
"Here we go"
"There he is"
"Got 'im"
"That's a snag"
"Darn branch"
Or nothing at all...

What do you say?
I said almost 2 dozen "Here we go!" 's this past weekend..
Depends on what I am throwing, it will usually include something to do with that bait.
Example: If throwing a Hoo Daddy, I tend to say "Who's Your Daddy"
My brother tends to do the same thing and was throwing my new jig in a Grasshopper color, this past Saturday. Couldn't tell you how many times I had to listen to him holler "GGRRRAASSSSSHOPPPPEERR" with some strange oriental twist to it (reminded me of a kung fu show that was on tv when I was a kid) ..........I was about ready to toss him out of the boat
If I'm by myself I don't say anything. If I'm in a boat I usually say "There's a bite" and then after a successful hookset I say "There's a fish!". I even named my cell phone "There's a fish", so if someone scans for Bluetooth devices that's the device name that comes up.
Does grunting count?!
In all honesty, I'm usually just a "Got one!" type if I'm with someone. If I'm alone, I just "oooo come here" repeatedly at it until I have it. Then it's usually an expletive or two.
"There we go" or "Got one". Sometimes it's "Praise the Lord!"
Hoochie Mama
"Really?, I was just dozing off!"
"Boom goes the dynamite!"
"Money!"
I do my best impersonation of Jeremy Wade from River Monsters..."Fish on!"

My tourney partner never says anything. I just hear braided line straining through guides so that's how I know.
There's one.
I think... I'll pay closer attention next time I'm out. That's usually when I'm with someone. I don't say much of anything when I'm alone

+1
I usually just say "fish". But when I'm fishing with my friend anytime someone does a big hookset we say "Thunder C*ck". I don't know where it came from but the first time he said it I laughed way too hard
"There she is..."
"Got er'..."
I usually scream, "Holy *****, I actually got a fish!"
I kid, I kid... I'm not sure what I say if anything at all this thread has made me become self-aware, so now I will start paying attention.
If it is truly a monster it is Holy ****! because those are the words that my lizard brain sends to my mouth, I am not in control. Generally it is nothing, but if I have someone with I will say of course get the net if needed, but that is well after the hookset.
I usually let out a "fish on" and after I have the hook in if it feels big I'll follow it up with a "oooh this is a nice one" with a few "stay on...stay on...stay on..."
Check another for "there he is"
"There's one" or "I got one" and then when the fish is about half way to the boat I sometimes say, but always think "Please stay hooked, please stay hooked, please stay hooked"
Since I am getting older my body seems to do the talking for me, depends on how hard I set the hook as to which part of my body does the talking...
I like to say "FISH ON" but lately its been a curse word followed by missed it.
Mostly, nothing! Unless I know its a Hawg and I say "get the net" since I have been fishing with saltwater sized trebles and don't want my partner bleeding like a stuffed pig later...lol.
Saltwater its all about the FISH ON!
Gotem, hopefully followed by grab the net.
My buddy says " get the net" every time he gets a bite!
i tease him relentlessly.
I'm usually by myself and now that I think of it my dialogue is absolutely ridiculous haha... More often than not I talk to the fish like I'm Chris Farley trying to get wings or something.
I just act like I have caught a fish before. Don't say anything.
HELLO !!!!!!! UGH!!!!!!
If the bite is tough I sometimes say " finally". Other than that I usually don't say anything.

Sounds about like how I do it.
In a tournament, I usually don't say a thing....my partner knows when the boat rocks, to get the net. 90% of the time, I have the fish flipped in the boat before he even puts his rod down.

I just went out today. Only got to say 4 hear we goes.
I usually say "Got one"
After I set the hook and feel a fish, I say "Got yo ass!"
Never fails lol

The boat rock, or the sound of reeling faster with tension on the line, or the rod slicing through the air fast on a hook set, all sure signals to get the net. I'm not patient about waiting for it either unless I can see they're obviously not hooked good. Pitching or flipping, that fish will be in the boat seconds after the hookset.
During the state championship, we were wrapping things up hitting a laydown across from the boat ramp 5 minutes before weigh in and I turned to my partner and said "you've caught 13 today right?" and he goes "Nope, this one's 14" right before he leaned back on one. Best hook set catch phrase so far that I have witnessed!

Exactly this
"YEP" or "GOT HEEM!"
ACT I:
"Okay," (I, to partner), "I have one on," (in a deliberately calm voice I use to communication simple facts -- meanwhile there is all this incredible internal emotion welling up in me, especially if it's a big one.) Then (to fish, begging): "No, no, no, fish, don't jump, stay down, don't freaking dare jump! Oh, oh, ooh, you're coming up, crap, you're gonna jump!"
ACT II:
Fish Jumps
ACT III:
"He's gone. I let him spit it. I'm an idiot."
ACT III (alternate):
"He's still on, bro, see how I hauled his dumass face sideways when he tried to jump, kept the pressure on, wouldn't give him any slack, man. That's what I'm talkin' about! That's what I'm talkin' about! You need like an 8:1 reel and you just haul his face sideways back to the water and it don't even matter if he jumps. One must have CONTROL." (Now, in voice accent of space alien robot): "I am master of bass! I am jump-proof bass master"... and then: "Oh, s***t, he jumped again. Whoa! He spit my jig! He's gone. Oh, man. I swear, I'm an idiot!"
My brother pointed out that i say this EVERYTIME i set a hook whether its on a rock, a log, some grass, or low and behold a fish. I say "GOT EM! Its about time ya took it. Now c'mere u"
Usually it's " ah........ Son of a b........"
with my buddy "suck it punk" then I do that wrestler move.
Mostly profanity but but I will start working on something more Disney like when I take my kids.
If I say anything at all it's: "There's one".
"There's one" then the whole way in I'm saying "stay on, stay on, stay on!" lol
Gee Beav, what you go and do that for?
Got eeeeem!!!

That's pretty metal dude. I thought only I did that though haha. I usually do s full out "oh yeaahh" though
"Here we go.... GOT EEM!!!" or if it's a big one "YEAHHHHH BUDDY!!" haha
"git your _____ in the boat!!!"
"Please stay on the hook", or "don't get off".
There's one
"HOT d**n"
"HOO LAWDY"
"HOO ****"
*gibberish*
and the classic, "hwoop!"
I usually will have the fish on for a couple seconds then say "there we go" or "here's one"
I'm usually quiet till its about 3 ft from the boat and then it's "get in the boat, get in the boat" followed by a loud "YESSIR!!!!!!" Now that I think about that, it's funny. I do the same thing just about every time, weather I'm alone or with someone. Funny to see people in other boats looking over at you too.
Sometimes I pull a Jeremy Wade (from River Monsters) and say, "Fish on!", when I hook into a decent fish. Sometimes, I even say it with a slight British accent.
There's one!!
I'm partial to "Fish on" and if it's a toad I generally go ape ***** and say "boom" multiple times.
"GOT HIM" every time.. Don't even realize it comes out of my mouth lol
If I'm with a certain guy I always say
"Where you at" but most of the time I just keep quiet and enjoy the fight.
Big un or net.
"Here's one" If I'm alone I just say it in my head.
Normal hit = "here we go" or "boom"
Big hit = "BOOM!!" followed by "There she is!"
If there are any bystanders = "Fish on!" (this is something I just started doing when my daughter is fishing with me.)
Got one!
Fish on!
