B.A.S.S. sticks it to the kids-Bigtime 2024

fishing user avatarTin reply :

In very bad taste imo, 3 months before, after all travel arrangements and such are made, B.A.S.S. "canceled" this years 2008 Junior Bassmaster World Championship. Instead it will be fish along with the Federation Nation Championship in November to go along with its whole "grass roots" movement. Wow, is that a way to smash a kids dreams who always wanted to fish with a KVD or Mike Iaconelli or what? Just plain wrong if you ask me.  >:(

Yup not only are State Feds and families loosing money but I mean come on, when I was going, if someone told me nope, change of plans, I would have been devistated! I might have just said forget it and stopped fishing. I feel sooooo bad for these kids and there families. Even though it is still on, it will be nothing like it used to be. Just the Classic Atmosphere was unlike anything else, the oppurtunity to fish with your hero, the winners going on stage and getting driven around the arena on the final weigh in day. Just sad.  :'(

It is just one thing after another and I see more states going over to FLW/TBF.

fishing user avatarLow_Budget_Hooker reply :

Tin's dad called me today, I can't tell you how bad I feel for these guys.  I think they are out like 5k, just in non-transferrable airline tickets,....un  be  lievable.

I just lost ALL respect for that organization.  Luckily, the TBF-RI just got an ACES president, I can see him recovering this fumble and seeing the whole RI jr team go their way.  I hope they do,..the $$ they just cost their members is a slap in the face, the fact that they just left asll these great kids hanging,....well, that's a kick in the privates.

I'm extremely let down.  Way to go ESPN >:( >:( >:( >:(

fishing user avatarbasspro48 reply :

Wow, talk about a serious slap to the face. I used to have the utmost respect for BASS and its youth program, mainly because I wanted to go to the Jr. Classic, but not anymore.

I guess thats another reason to be happy that my club is a TBF/FLW affiliated club...

fishing user avatar.dsaavedra. reply :

wow. thats horrible. ive never liked any big name money clubs, the other one ive dealt with was the north american fishing club. they are a bunch of retards. you pay for nothing basically. i hardly get any information in the magazine or their website. and they are always trying to make you buy stuff you didnt ask for. only thing good about them WAS their forums, but even those are informative, just a bunch of good people to socialze with. now they done f'd the forums up and they are sooo hard to use. im goin bass resource exclusive now 8-)

Not to defend BASS here or anything, I just want to maybe provide a travel tip.  The non-transferrable tickets should be able to be used for another flight.  United has a $100 fee to use the value of that ticket on another ticket if booked within one year of the travel date of the original ticket.  Confusing enough?

So, if someone had a $400 non-transferrable ticket that value could be used to "purchase" a different $400 ticket for $100.  Still sucks big time, but they may be able to get some use out of that money.

Follow the money.

ESPN is all about money.

ESPN is not about fishing, football, basketball, baseball, wrestling, rodeo, arm wrestling, poker championships, etc. ESPN is about money.

ESPN will save a lot of money by combining the events.  ESPN could care less about any individuals.

Growing up in Louisiana you learn to "Follow the Money."

It is still true today.

A simply sad state of affairs.

ESPN has once again shot themselves in the foot.

Just "Follow the Money."

fishing user avatarLow_Budget_Hooker reply :

Yes, that's true,..... X 14 kids.......:(  This will cost the kids no less than $1400, just in Airfare

Let's remember the vacation weeks parents took, hotels, etc etc.  A few of these kids have sponsorships that also pivot on them being there.

But most of all, what kind of message does this send the kids of our sport?

this is a copy I found on another site, of the email the Jr Directors got today.

"Attached please find a Press Release announcing the move of the JWC from the 2008 Bassmaster Classic in February to the 2008 BASS Federation Nation Championship in November. This issue was discussed with groups of Presidents during the recent Presidents meetings and is being done to align our youth programs with the premier BFN events.

We realize that this is short notice and for that I apologize, but I have been reviewing all of our youth programs (as well as all BFN programs) since my return to BASS in May. I believe that this is the right move for the overall Junior Bassmaster program and there is no reason to delay implementation of the decision. Without going into all of the details, I believe that most of you will be very pleased with the youth initiative that is currently in the planning stages. We should have that finalized and out to you right after the first of the year.

This was a tough decision, but one that will ultimately help all of us strengthen our youth programs and provide a youth initiative that directly leads to an increase in BFN membership. If you have any questions, please feel free to email or call me.

Thanks and have a great holiday season,

ok, not sure what the name of the event is but when all the state champs compete for the extra spots at the classic, this is where the Jr world champs will be.  Instead of going to THE classic, fishing with the pro's, etc, they will be fishing with the state champs.  No disrespect for towards these guys intended but how lame is that?  MY OPINION (same opinion that has kept me from joining a club all these yrs)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BASS to Move 2008 Junior Bassmaster World Championship to Federation Nation Championship Week in November

CELEBRATION, Fla.  In order to align its youth initiatives with its grassroots organization, the Federation Nation, BASS announced today that the 2008 Junior Bassmaster World Championship will be moved to the week of the Federation Nation Championship festivities, set for November in Junction City, Kan., and Milford Lake.

The BASS Federation Nation is the main conduit of support for BASS' youth initiatives, and the move will allow the grassroots organization of BASS to lend more active support to the marquee youth championship event.

This move allows the BASS Federation Nation representatives to further mentor these youth competitors during their championship event, said Don Corkran, director of the BASS Federation Nation. We applaud our past Bassmaster Classic contenders for their active participation in the JWC.

The 2008 Bassmaster CastingKids National Championship will take place during February's Bassmaster Classic week in Greenville, S.C.

fishing user avatarKU_Bassmaster. reply :

What a crappy time and place to hold this event too. Junction City, KS is far from a vacation hot spot and Milford Lake is nothing special at all.

fishing user avatarbassnleo reply :

Someone give me a clue?

They are still going to hold Casting Kids at the Classic, yet they moved the JWC?

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for anything kid oriented, but.......if we want to truely get kids fishing and shed more light on the sport of fishing, actually taking them fishing and mentoring them in that way is definatley the way to go IMHO. Sure, a casting competiton may spur interest but it is nothing like being outdoors and actually fishing.

fishing user avatarbighed reply :

This really chaps my butt.  Here's the email I sent them:

Cancel my membership this second and refund the balance of my membership.  I will not spend one more penny with BASS nor participate in even one more local BASS event.  How could any adult screw children out of a tournament experience with their fishing heros that have already earned?  You folks are a bunch of *****!

You tell 'em bighead! I really find this hard to believe. I wonder if any of the decision makers at BASS/ESPN bothered to think of how many people this was going to pi$$ off? Those kids want to fish with KVD, Ish, Ike and Skeet....not John Smith, Jerry Doe and Joe Shmo. (No offense John, Jerry and Joe) but the whole pro/kid experience is GONE!

WAY TO GO BASS!

I agree this is horrible. Maybe a call to the local television station is in order. I have found in the past that the last thing a group of "big money" people want is to look BAD especially when it involves kids. This isn't even a story that needs to be spinned. It is a true case of Goliath screwing David. Let's not forget...E.S.P.N. is right down the road for alot of us in Bristol CT. Imagine if the Little Leauge told the team from Lincoln, RI or any other youth team from around the country, Sorry no World Series!!! What an uproar!!

Good old fashion Americans making noise and boycotting if nessecary..

P.S.

Anyone here know any of the B.A.S.S. PROS???? I am sure that they would not be happy with this situation and perhaps would be a good allie???

fishing user avatarStatosDadRI reply :

Thanks for all the support I see in these messages. We will all get past this dark day in BASS history. Calling those 2 kids and their families as well as couple Jr guest an my own daughter to tell them the JWC/ Classic was off was thee most stressfull, depressing day of my 42 years.

I've contacted the Airlines and as long as we travel with them; NorthWest within 1 year and we can't switch any travelers we will be looking at $100.00 per ticket, $1400.00 loss.

JWC with the Pro's, Classic memories, ruined family vacations and the disappointment have been crunched by Corporate and =$0.00. I wonder how much additional advertising $dollars$ it will take to re-coup the lost membership from this money saving plan.

Again Thanks

Junction City, Kan., and Milford Lake.  Information needed   please tell me you've seen a Northwest Plane on a local runway. $4200.00 if not  :'(

fishing user avatarJay_G reply :

There was a renewal notice laying on my counter until it just hit the trash. I have a contact who is a staff writer for ESPN fishing. I plan on letting him know that this decision was not taken well by the fishing community unless anyone has an objection. Anything else anyone wants me to relate?

fishing user avatarGatorbassman reply :

I was considering signing up for BASS so I could fish a few of their weekend tournaments this year. After this they can forget it. FLW here I come.

That is just unbelievable.

I guess this just makes FLW look that much better.  Luckily my Jr. club is FLW affiliated.

Shame on you ESPN   >:(

Your biggest and best bet is probably KCI just north of Kansas City.  Then from there it's ONLY about a 3 hour drive west.  I can't believe that is where they are holding this event.  It's not very accessible, there is not much to do as far as "family stuff" goes, nothing special about the lake, November is not what I would call a good fishing month in KS, the list could go on.

fishing user avatarTin reply :

I always dreamed of fishing in a Bassmaster Classic and everything but after this, I will head over to FLW perminatley. ESPN has absolutley destroyed the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society and all the work Ray Scott did. Its all about the money, just depressing. I mean come on! What else can be said, this is sooo bad.

If we focus our energy toward hitting the S.O.B's in the wallet like they did the kids we might change the situation. They get away with this crap because people complain a while and go on. If you want it to stop then we have to hit them hard where it hurts in there wallet. Not only hurt them but make them suffer and come back begging. This kinda crap goes on because we let it. If we stand up and say no they will stop doing this crap I know we can help these and future kids out but it will take some effort on our part.

Here is a link to some of there sponsers lets start a email barage. Sorry MATT but you are incorrect about the internal structure of BASS and BASS Federation Nation BFN signs a contract with BASS and BASS employs a BFN team to run BFN. We as BFN members pay $25.00 each x 25,000-40,000 members to BASS to get a product called BFN. BASS takes in $$ from sponsors to reach all their BFN members.

Furthmore BFN Volunteers Presidents, Conservation Directors and hosting State Federation Workers and Youth directors for years have been the cheap free labor that runs the Classic's.

fishing user avatarZel... reply :

Matt, some interesting counter points you make. And I agree with you that BASS should have fulfilled their commitments this year, and outlined the changes for next year so people could decide what they want to do.

But to use the basis of your argument the Federation didn't come up with the Pro events run by BASS. But it is the free volunteer work BASS gets from the Federation members that makes the Pro events successful, and some might even argue possible. So would it be also fair if now the Federation demanded to be paid for their services at the events going forward? And what do you think these events would start to look like, and pay out, if there were no Federation volunteers providing their services for free?

It surprises me that Ray Scott has been mostly quiet on these matters that diminish the once great organization he founded. And it saddens me to think this remarkable man's legacy might be tarnished in the realm of public opinion that he became a sell-out in his golden years.

fishing user avatarStatosDadRI reply :

The meetings were held last month November during the  Federation National Championship.  Moving the  JWC was discussed no vote was taken by the  presidents and not one word was metioned of it to anyone.  Every Youth Director was blindsigted yesterday with the memo at 12.00pm with a press release to follow a few minutes later.

Just 2 weeks ago we were discussing off limits at the JWC  with BASS Since we had one family purchase a complete trip for 4 to SC during  XMAS to pre fish this was a suprise to our younger State Champion and well add that to the fiancial loss.

Hold on I'm icing my left one, the swelling in the right one is going  down a bit from that kick it received yeterday.....

Exactly, I can remember in Pittsburgh in 05 all of these people myself and dad included, with a 104 degree heat index taking down tents and working our butts off for 3 hours afters events had ended. While BASS big wigs and those "paid" people were sitting in the AC of the new Tundra's.

2. IT ISNT JUST RI!!! There are several other kids from OTHER STATES that had no clue. As mentioned before the meeting took place in November, that is last month. So what they had 4 months notice instead of 3? Everything was still booked a while ago for most cold weather states.

Sorry man, we have been duped!!!! I figured since you started it, you saw all the original posts. I never saw it in Tourney section, only General. It got moved and changed.      Changed after it moved to the General section.

Sorry to anyone else that may be confused or feels duped. I still say BASS should make good on this years classic as I have continued to state, then make changes.

I took, like BigHead was a little PO'ed cause I sure think the kids got the short end of the stick.

Thanks Russ, for changing my original post. I know some of those words i used was border line profanity, thanks for cleaning me up yesterday>

Sometimes I need it>

Two years ago there was a lot of acquisitions the fed had no vote on what happened with our programs I guess thy were wright. Most thought it was a thing over $5 yet some others said If we let this go who knows what thy (BASS) will do next. We'll thy(BASS) got there $5 and continue to take things from the BFN for it. More money less programs.

1) dues increase $15 to $20

2) Weekend series went to ABA

3)JR's not fishing at the classic

What's next BFN's Classic spots?

Who Knows ?

Till this year I kept my membership in BFN/BASS, TBF/FLW  And ABA.

I for one will not renew in BFN/BASS.

Well, I noticed this thread yesterday evening and was absolutely furious. I couldn't believe it. I fished the Missouri Junior Bassmaster this season, and did fairly well ,Not well enough to qualify for the JWC, but well enough that I was placing in almost every tournament and got to be really good friends with the 2 kids from missouri that did qualify for the JWC......I cant even imagine what my friends are going through right now.... I cant believe BASS did this....Our tournaments ended this year in october...the kids that made it to the JWC have to wait OVER A YEAR untill the JWC comes around....And another thing, what are we juniors competing for in this upcoming 2008 season??? when is our JWC going to be?? NOVEMER 2009??.....i dont know what to do...i might be moving to BassWorld, or if i can find a Junior FLW....maybe I'll go there.....Here is what my Youth Director said:

"Yesterday was the first I had heard of this.  There are youth that have already bought non refundable airline tickets for family and friends to go to the event in February.  I have heard from a lot of the other Youth directors as they are coming back with negative feedback.  I will keep you informed.   We will have our tournaments as scheduled but I am not sure when our next years state champion will fish."

Heres what I think they should have done:

Have the JWC with the classic this year, Then move the future JWC's to november...(sorry if that dosnt make sense, it does to me)

fishing user avatarben23 reply :

I fished in both the BASS and FLW Junior World Championships last year. They were some of the best times I have ever had in my life. I fished with John Crews and got to hang out with Ike, Skeet, KVD, - you name it! For the FLW I got to meet David Dudley, fish with Art Ferguson, talk to Jay Yelas- ANOTHER amazing experience.

Needless to say, hearing this news was nothing short of devastating. I know that the mere chance of fishing with KVD or Ike is what gets a lot of kids fired up to fish the JWC. With this change, the experience will not be the same at all. Yes it will be a huge tournament, but in no way comparable to the JWCs of old. I am blessed to have fished the BASS JWC when it was with the pros. I just really hope that FLW does not follow suit- and I do not think they will.

The FLW went the extra mile to set up special seminars and parties for all of the junior anglers. I am glad that I only fished the FLW Junior Circuit this year- and look forward to hopefully fishing the FLW Junior World Championships. I hope they keep it up on the Junior level- they certainly better not drop the ball now.

Next year I will be fishing in the Collegiate Bass fishing trail, so hopefully things keep running smoothly with that.

I hope that somehow BASS does something to help those that got screwed- kids and adults. Unfortunately though, Nothing will be able to heal the wounds of ruining their shot to fish with the "real pros".

God Bless

I e-mailed the owner of the ABA to day to see what was going on. This doesn't

reflect favorably upon the ABA when something like this happens. I said this a few years back ( ESPN needs to get the heck out of bass fishing) This is not the first mistake they have made and probably not the last. I am a life member of Bass and for myself I would like to apologize to the people that were hurt by this bad decision. If I could get my membership dues back I would.

Wow, that is great, I have a ton of bass stuff to get rid of, but I think a better place for it, the wood stove, dont want anyone advertising for this organization. At this weeks B.A.S.S. meeting,I'm having my name taken off all of the B.A.S.S. Clubs' rosters I belong to.

Just curious, I'm not a student of the law or anything but how about a lawsuit from all of those loosing money because of this late notice?

fishing user avatarMatt Fly reply :

Ike, Ishand, and Creww, and a few others said they will still be fishing with the kids.    All the bashing Ike gets and he still stands up for the kids.    Appears BASS anglers will voice their opinions also.

SUBJECT: # 60626: More cuts at ESPN/BASS?

Submitted by Big Red (68.207.178.65) from ALABAMA on 11/27/2007 10:14:00 PM

Heard from a fairly reliable source that ESPN/BASS was considering cancelling an event associated with the 2008 Classic. It appears that this one may effect the Junior BASSMASTER's. Anyone else heard anything on this?

Also, anyone notice the advertising sales positions on the masthead in the most recent (Dec '08) BASSMASTER? They don't have any sales people anymore. What the heck is going on? It's the end of November. How are you going to sell advertising for 2008 if you don't have sales people calling on accounts?

This may be a serious sign that the end is near.

fishing user avatarFishTank reply :

Man, what a bunch of BS.  ESPN/BASS have sunk to a new low.

If you guys want to get to them don't email ESPN or BASS, email the sponsors.  I have had experience watching funds for a Soccer and kids Basketball program get derailed and transfered to another program.  Talking professionally to sponsors was the only way to get results.

I'm sure Ray Scott has an opinion on this but his opinion doesnt matter to ESPN....they do what they want, when they want, to who they want.

In one way or the other, this move was made because of money. Money drives the ESPN bus.....if you dont believe it, look at what they did to the Majors, you know, the tournaments with no entry fees and the winner takes home $250,000....GONE!  ESPN didnt feel that the 4 Majors were bringing in enough interest or revenue to justify putting out a total of 1 Million bucks in prize money in one season. Money. The root of all evil.

Again......

I think there is already two Gentleman looking at it. I don't think they can get  together on a price, so ESPN says we will dismantle it before we let you have it for that price. Just my thoughts, but keep your eyes open.

It's going to come back around to them...b/c when us juniors grow up, we'll know how screwy B.A.S.S is, that nobody will want to fish with them.

fishing user avatarGarnet reply :

I've spent the last couple hours reading press releases and reports about companys I/we own stock in. So I'm in press release mode.

My first reading of Don's press release was budget cuts.

My second reading casting kids are still going to the classic and Don and staff will be there so it's not budget cuts.

Then I read the opening statement "in order to align its youth iniatives with it's grassroots Organization"

If ESPN was a stand alone corp. this is a sign they are cleaning up the balnce sheet for a sale.

Then the timing of this press release just before xmas, at first glance looks like a quick sweep  under the carpet.

I also had email were Don said why wait.

After ESPN got creamed in there last divorce with Fed Nation and had to back track.

This looks like ESPNi s separating assets on a 2 year corp. agenda.

The why wait looks like Don is telling the board of directors that divorce in 1 year is possible.

This is the press release that I'm looking for, If I'm thinking of buying stock in this company ( value investing) I know theres lots of bad news to come and a better price is coming.

If I own stock in this company and the chart was up and I'm making money it would be time to start taking profits.

So my prediction is ESPN will divorce Fed Nation by Jan 1/2009

I was in a B.A.S.S. federation affiliated club, actually 2 of them at one time. When the big federation split occurred one club stayed BASS the other went FLW. I stayed with the FLW affiliated club and at this point I'm glad I did.

I have allowed my BASS membership to expire. Since it has expired I have received 10 letters and have received at least 5 phone calls to renew my membership. We're talking about a twenty dollar membership.

I would agree that it's all about the dollar signs.........

Yea, .....nice touch,....REBOOK YOUR TICKETS AGAIN!!!!!

Honestly, I would tell this organization to pound sand by now.

Why is it ok to have changed it in the 1st place? If it were me, I would get a lawyer. Honestly,...I paid "X" amount of money to compete for a prize. A chance to fish with the pros at the classic. You took my money and then changed the prize at the end of the season. Does this not ring FRAUD with anyone else???

If not, I'm running a lottery, lol. Give me $5 for a chance at 200k. Warning: I work for BASS, the prize could change later, maybe a pack of hooks or something. You may think I'm way off base but I know the RI jrs had to change all their tickets.  THAT cost them more money.  NOW, they don'r need tickets at all because it's within driving distance.  2k wasted because you changed the prize in a competition I PAID to be in.

I would call my lawyer. >:(

Some of you might have seen this on another board but it looks fitting to me.

The devil went down to Georgia, he was looking for a soul to steal. He was in a bind 'cos he was way behind: he was willin' to make a deal. When he came across this young man sawin' on a fippin stick and playin' it hot. And the devil jumped upon a hickory stump and said: "Boy let me tell you what: "I bet you didn't know it, but I'm a bass fisherman too. "And if you'd care to take a dare, I'll make a bet with you. "Now you flip a pretty good jig, boy, but give the devil his due: "I bet a shield of blue gold against your soul, 'cos I think I'm better than you." The boy said: "My name's scotty and it might be a sin, "But I'll take your bet, your gonna regret, 'cos I'm the BASS boss and the only one theres ever been."

scotty you warm up that Merc and run that motor hard. 'Cos hells broke loose in Georgia and the devil deals it hard. And if you win you get this shiny shield of blue and gold. But if you lose, the ESPN gets your soul.

The devil opened up his locker and he said: "I'll start this show." And fire flew from his fingertips as he loaded up his rod. And he pulled the line across his thumb and it made an evil hiss. Then a crew of demons joined in and they loaded up the boat. When the devil finished, scotty said: "Well you're pretty good ol' son. "But if you'll sit down in that chair, right there, and let me show you how its done."

Fire on the mount, run boys, run. The devil's in the house of the risin' sun. Mickey in the in the piggy bank, pickin' out cash. "Daffy, does your dog bite?" "No, child, no."

Scotty bowed his head because he knew that he'd been beat. He laid that golden sheild on the ground at devils feet. the devil said: "scotty just come on back if you ever want to try again. "I told you once, you son of a gun, your owned by ESPN."

And he played Fire on the mount, run boys, run. The devil's in the house of the risin' sun. Mickey in the in the piggy bank, pickin' out cash. "Daffy, does your dog bite?" "No, child, no."

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for anything kid oriented, but.......if we want to truely get kids fishing and shed more light on the sport of fishing, actually taking them fishing and mentoring them in that way is definatley the way to go IMHO.
