The cool thing about the new year is that the fishing shows on cable TV start up again usually during the first full weekend of the new year. So I have my DVR set to record a ton of fishing shows and I've watched some of them already.
It's good to see Bill Dance back and to be honest, he's the best. It looks like he's in a new boat for this year and still sponsored by Bass Pro Shops. He pushed a couple of fishing items in this first episode and didn't have much enthusiasm for them, it was like he was simply reading a script. Anyway, Bill Dance is the only bass show I can take the whole year.
Facts of Fishing - In this show they went carp fishing which was a nice change up from the typical bass fishing show. But it was mostly about Mercer and his guest acting like fools while waiting for carp to bite. Not very informative.
Hook and Look. This is one of the best bass fishing shows on TV and one of the most informative, or tries to be informative. Another nice episode from them.
One More Cast with Shaw Grigsby. When I first got into bass fishing I really enjoyed Grigsby and his show. He's funny, nice, enthusiastic, etc... But now after a few years his salesmen shtick is a little tiring. He seems more a hack for Strike King than anything. I still like Shaw and always pull for him when he's competing on MLF and Bass Tournaments.
Major League Fishing. It's good to see this program back on and I'l say I've been waiting all fall/winter for this show to return. I really enjoy this show. Also, you get to learn about a lot of different pro anglers.
Salt Water Experience. It's not a bass show but I think it's the classiest fishing show on TV right now.
The Bass Pro's. This is a fun show to watch because they feature three or four different topics in each show. It's looks like they added a few more people to the cast this season including Ish Monroe.
Bass University. I've not watched this show yet but I'm not a big fan of the hosts.
So who out there is watching the fishing shows this winter?
Shaw gives the same boring show for 30 minutes each week. MLF is fun to watch and so is FOF. I don't care about informative, I just want to like watching it...
I don't like MLF as much as informative shows like Bill Dance and Babe Winkleman. But I grew up watching informative fishing shows as well as National Geographic and Wild America
Timmy Horton Outdoors keeps growing on me over the past 2 years and is one of my new favorites.
What happened to Hank Parker? I used to love his show.
Bill Dance is still number 1. I have watched him for years and never get tired of him. He probably is reading his lines but hey, he is 75 years old. Also a Jimmy Houston fan, he just a young guy, just 70.
I enjoy watching people catch big fish, I enjoy learning new techniques, and I enjoy seeing new products. So if a shoe has any or all of those, I'm there. The only one I absolutely can't do is Sweetwater. Those guys...holy cow...I'll take rednecks noodling catfish any day over them.
So glad they're back. I have a bunch set to my DVR - MLF, Zona, FoF, Roland, Bill, Jimmy, Hank, Babe, SMC, Reel in the Outdoors, Lindner, Fishing University. Probably missing a few.
Big fan of MLF. Also, the Lesson shows are about as good as it gets. Very informative.
I also like Zona and Mercer as they break the monotony of many of the other shows. They are entertaining and don't feel like half hour sales pitches. Zona also gets a bunch of quality guests.
Linders are always good,Zona brings a lot fun back to it.
IMO, Bill is right up there with Roland on the marketing stuff. It's like watching a 30 minute fishing infomercial. I just can't deal with it. Bill's a super nice guy in person, but I can't watch his show.
MLF, Zona's AFS, and FLW are on the DVR right now. I have WFN, Outdoor Channel, and one other though so I have fishing shows on 24/7
I'm a big fan of MLF. Just watched some FLWs this past week and only saw about 10 minutes (maybe) of fishing in the 60 minute show....

I look at BD, Jimmy Housotn and Roland as info-tainment and learn more from MLF. Since recently reading an article about how fake these shows are. I'm watching them very closely to see how many of the fish look like they were really caught and not plants from the livewell. That's the reason I like MLF best. When they're worried about the weight of the smallest fish, you know it's not fake.
I have WFN channel so I have a lot to choose from. There's one I can't think of right now, set in TX, and the host swears you only see what he and his guests can catch in a single outing. He fishes public lakes, but you don't see a lot of other boats. He probably fishes prime times and has to delete a lot of footage. But there are a lot of smaller bass in the show. That's how to know it's not just a 30 min commercial, chock full of other commercials. Some of these show hosts have to wear the same clothes for three days to make one episode.
The topwater episodes are pretty hard to fake and are the most exciting.
Watch a YouTube of a pro on a public lake in the middle of winter and you'll get a feel for real bass fishing. They fish all day for a bite (sometimes).
I did watch MFL and enjoy watching guys catch fish but I wish they shared what they're using more and what presentation they're using on the jig or lure.

They have Major League Lessons which is a 2-hour show. I believe they do these after the major events are over. It's an in-depth review of with several of the anglers where they show you exactly what gear, lures and presentations were being used. It's really informative.
Bill Dance certainly pushes products from his sponsors, but he's still informative and fun to watch. His bloopers are hilarious. Saw an interview w/ Jimmy Houston. He called Bill, "a walking blooper", and said when Bill and Roland get together it's like watching clowns at the circus. He said Bill makes so many bloopers, sometimes they will reenact them to get a better camera shot.
I notice a lot of his fishing is on the same lake. Never any other boats. I suspect it is stocked and managed just for the show. And I suspect you could probably catch real nice bass there just about any time and on any thing. Even knowing all that, I still like his show. He seems like he'd be a fun guy to fish with.

I didn't see that on Comcast lineup I'll have to do some searching. thanks
Honey Hole Outdoors was the one supposedly shot in the same day and guarantees to only show what they catch in one day.
BD and Jimmy usually are fishing private, trophy managed, waters or club ponds. Not knocking them for that because who wants to watch pros striking out? You can see plenty of that in B.A.S.S. or FLW coverage or YouTube.

Edit: found them on MLF website
thanks
Pretty good summary of the newest fishing shows. I think Mercer can be entertaiining but he and Fish Fishburn try too hard to be "cute" sometimes. I am sooo tired of Mercer on the Bassmasters and his "Boom Shacka Lacka" - very annoying. I like MLF and Zona easily as much as any shows.
1 Bill Dance Outdoors
2 The Bass Dr
3 Major League Lessons
4 Major League Fishing
I cannot watch Johnny Johnson. His laugh is beyond annoying. I tried to watch it one night while my wife was working in the background and she threatened to unplug the tv.
On the Water with Hank Parker is featuring my home waters tomorrow night. Take a look.
Outdoor channel?
Pursuit where I am.

Honey Hole is a good show. Bill Wilcox is a good host and good stick. He does fish a new lake every week and one day to shoot. Some shows he catches dinks, but you feel better about yourself, lol. The episodes are on YouTube and the channel is All Outdoors Media, I think.

The Pursuit Channel. At least on Direct TV.
I'm very happy about this too but I still can't stand the fact that there are at least 6 or 7 times more hunting shows than fishing. Even when fishing is in full swing with the show line-up there are very few compared to hunting shows. It's hours and hours of hunting shows in a row man...ridiculous. I'd be in heaven if fishing shows were aired like this. At least there's You Tube and Chromecast..thank goodness!!

You can find lots of FLW and ELITE's shows and others. I really enjoy the bait and gear reviews and shorter "movies"/ clips about particular baits. It's a terribly dangerous slippery slope if you start watching those bait reviews and videos. The bait monkey is behind all of it I'm quite sure! I spend hours watching instructional and tips videos. Matt Allen of * is one of my favorites. He does a lot of swimbait stuff but him and has partner cover conventional baits and tactics as well.
Just looked up Honey Hole on youtube. Now I'll never get anything done at work lol
Don't forget Lunkerville. New episodes start 1/7 on NBC Sports, and 1/11 on WFN.
I saw a couple of episodes of a show that kept track of number of casts and fish caught. Anyone know what it was?

Hank still has a show on the outdoor channel. Fishes a lot from his private lake.

You need to check out WFN, world fishing network, I have AT&T and it's on there. I'd imagine the WFN website lists what companies have the channel. Check it out!

Good call Glenn, this is one of my favorites and it's already set up to record on the DVR. Mike D is awesome!
Anyone else watching the Informative Fisherman YouTube channel? Between that, and the Navionics webinar channel, I've been addicted for months.
glad the new seasons are starting to air.
One show they should axe is skeeter basschamps. What a waste of time. Total self indulgent 2 person show about....nothing.
That guy was funny the first 3 seconds I saw him on tv, after that...I had to ponder what the heck is skeeter thinking? They must have to burn some cash before they file taxes.
Anyone care for Extreme Angler?
On 1/6/2016 at 9:37 AM, bassheel said:Anyone care for Extreme Angler?
I'm opposed to anything with the word extreme in it because it's so cliche.
This stinks. I can't get any of these shows on TWC unless I upgrade to their super duper package that costs as much as a car payment. Which ain't happening. Maybe something will turn up on Roku this winter.
On 1/6/2016 at 9:37 AM, bassheel said:Anyone care for Extreme Angler?
I used to...his "persona" kind of made it a chore to watch. Not to mention the intro is about as long as the show itself.
I enjoy
1. Honey Hole All Outdoors: Bill Wilcox has a wealth of info and I always find myself watching around the same time of year from 2014 and 2015 on YouTube that it is currently to compare the conditions in Texas to mine in Georgia. Usually pretty similar except we don't have power plants to fish in the winter.
2. Lunkerville: You don't get a wealth of knowledge and he is always fishing that darn senko but Mike D is entertaining to watch. Its fun, there are lessons learned or at least a diff perspective, and I enjoy seeing him go all over to fish. He would bank fish, fish from a Jon boat, fish from a beach, Ice fish, and evenjoy street fish with Ike.
3. Bill Dance is the man, nuff said!
4. Flw is fun to watch too as is Lindners Angling Edge, and Americana Outdoors as well
I'll tolerate:
1. Bass Dr: Super cheesy premise for the show but it's not a bad show to watch. Is Jason the new host this year? I've actually enjoyed it more since Todd H hasn't been doing the shows anymore. Nothing against him though.
2. Roland Martin, Scott Martin Challenge, Jimmy Houston : They are all in the same boat. Even with the YouTube video SM does, I still feel like I get more out of other You tubers than him. Lots of plugs for Roland lip balm, fish gloves, frog togs, fuel additives, Engel Coolers....its just better to put the show on mute and watch the fish catches.
3. Extreme Angler:
I actually like this show and should move it to "I like" from just this I'll tolerate section. I know the intro is long but it's YouTube, just skip ahead. He likes his Strike king and St Croix rods and he is funny with his little gimmicks and sayings
There's a "can't stand to watch" list but that's neither here or there
Boy, TV fishing shows have certainly come a long way since the days of "Gadabout Gaddis"! I really like MFL and many other of the new up & coming shows. Hook n' Look is certainly of the best.
When someone says fishing show, Bill Dance is the first that comes to mind!.... Always been, always will be #1
My second favorite was City Limits Fishing with Ike
It was a refreshing change of pace to see a pro angler out of his element... Actually "fishing" rather than just showcasing a new product on some private farm raised bass
I havnt seen it on in a while, i heard they replaced Ike anyway so prob wouldn't be worth watching anymore
On 1/6/2016 at 2:28 AM, TrapperJ said:whats good on youtube for fishing shows?
KeepinItReelFishing
"know fishing" is pretty good too.
Angler West Tv and Fishful Thinker are some good shows that I enjoy. They don't make it look like the same day and they actually say when the have a bad day and have to come back.
The Scott Martin Challenge is a giant commercial. I understand thats how he makes a living but it gets ridiculous. Ish Monroe plugs everything but its not like SMC.
It's hard to beat MLF and the platform. I like Hook and Look because it shows exactly how a fish reacts when taking a bait and just playing with the bait.
The Lindners shows are always great as well not a lot of terrible plugs and actual info on how to fish different techniques.

MLF is the MOST informative fishing show on Television. No sales pitches, no scripts. You learn a lot from MLF if you can read between the lines.

I watched the new episode of Lunkerville last night, kayak fishing in NC with a wounded vet. Mike D caught a pig! As I was watching I was reminded that Lunkerville was how I heard about Bass Resource when I saw an episode with our very own Glenn May as a guest. He was schooling Mike D on how to catch smallmouth.

I agree... I would love to go fishing with Hackney. . Guy is d**n good. .
Linders Angling Edge is a bit preachy for me so I skip the end......BUT it's incredibly informative and I've always enjoyed watching Al Linder fish, including when he was with In-Fisherman.
I still do watch In-Fisherman as they are more bass oriented than they used to be with Doug Stange at the head of the show.
MLF is awesome, I also suppliment it was the FLW and Elite Series shows.
The one I like the least is "Pro Team Journal." It has never been an entertaining show regardless of who is fishing on it.
With the Youtube app on my TV, I've been watching most of my stuff that way. Much broader selection.

What's wrong with Miles and Joey? I've fished with Joey several times now, and there isn't a nicer guy out there. He is very well liked and respected on his home lake of Logan Martin. Really young, intelligent way beyond his 24 years, a solid family man w/ a wife and two young boys - a rarity at 24 these days...oh, and highly motivated. I can understand that the show skews young, I get that because the future of the sport is not 30, 40, or 50+ year olds - it's kids, but I gotta say having fished with Joey and talked with Miles a couple of times on the phone, they are genuinely good "kids". They're by far not the best anglers out there, but they're good guys and the show is well produced and fairly informative, IMO. Bill Dance is a pioneer, but I get tired of watching him catch six-pounders on private stocked ponds all day! Nothing wrong with that, it's just not my cup of tea.
PS - interesting fact: Miles "Sonar" Burghoff is Gary Burghoff's son.....AKA Walter "Radar" O'Reilly from the screen and TV versions of M*A*S*H...so there's that.

Man, the Shaw Grigsy show is a walking talking billboard. lol. The guy is like so juiced up with advertising. I always record his show but I can only take a few minutes before I fast forward to the end. Shaw is not very subtle in the advertising of things on his show. I still like the guy though.

Informative or not, Little Radar (who might be my favorite TV character of all time), I can't get past the way they portray themselves. I wasn't able to get into them from the beginning but as soon as they started singing The Black Eyed Peas I lost all ability to watch. Just personality differences. I'm an old man for a 33-year-old. I can't watch contemporary TV or listen to new music, either. Pop culture sucks.

Sorry to hear all that. I guess you wouldn't like them in real life either, 'cause it's no on-air act. They are just goofy, nice guys. I wish them all the luck in the world.
I love Castin' Cajun and Sportsman TV, great shows about fishing in Louisiana and the Gulf.
My parents quit paying for direct tv a few years ago so I don't really watch fishing shows (not complaining, I do a lot more productive things with my time now!). I really like following youtube channels though.
I will say Spanish Fly was probably my favorite fishing show ever, no screaming and yelling when they caught fish, very informative, great camera work, and the products they advertised were Shimano so I want to get that stuff anyways (and they didn't push it like most shows do where they make a whole episode about one product). Agreed. btw, I was watching a salt water show a while back (dont recall which one) and I'm thinking his daughter was on there?
Another show I saw yesterday had Flip Pallot from the old Walker Cay Chronicles.
Hey guys. Thanks for the kind words about my show. The new season just launched and we have 13 new episodes this year featuring everyday folks who love to fish. It's our 12th year of broadcast and we're not going anywhere. We've had a bunch of BR members on the show, including Glenn (aka Clark Kent) and will feature more in the future, for sure... We air on NBC Sports at 3:30pm EST on Thursdays, on WFN 6 times per week and on Comcast SportsNet Chicago, Philidelphia and California...and on Time Warner Sports in North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas... and you can watch full episodes of previous season's shows at Lunkerville.com.
I love Bass Resource... Glenn has done an amazing job embracing all that's important about bass fishing... what's so cool is that this site and forum is for everyone... and no matter what your skill level, you can come here and be welcomed and gain knowledge.
I don't post much here because of all my social media responsibilities, but I'll try to check in more often.

A lot of weekend anglers don't like the tourney guys because they can really get in your way and pressure the fish on the only day of the week you have to go fishing. And I don't like to go compete with them on Saturdays because I've had my run-ins with some of them as well. But I've learned a ton of info from what I've seen of them on TV and YouTube. Now I mostly just fish private waters but I put their lessons into use everywhere I go.

Haha, nothing wrong with it if it catches! I watched the catfish episode last night and no senko were harmed in that episode...lol.
Come back to south Atlanta to fish!
Keep up the great work!
MLF is great and I love Ultimate Match Fishing? I think that's what it's called. While I love MLF I swear they play wayyyyyyyyyy too many re-runs of the same one's. My other gripe is mainly my problem but now the shows are back on ..great...but dude, really, do they have to start at 7:00 am and end at 10:30/11:00 am???? I don't do DVR and I don't do early mornings on the weekend unless I'm the one going fishing!! So I roll out bed and catch the credits of the last fishing show and then BAM..a guy is whispering in a tree stand about a buck coming into the clearing....ooooohhh....I'd rather watch HGTV. Good thing I love soccer so I can at least catch some Premier League...of course they're 5 hours ahead so if Chelsea plays an early game I don't see it....love my sleep!
BTW: I do like Hank but can't watch his show...it's too fluffy and not really a serious fishing show, ever. He's a tremendous fisherman and even better person but I just can't watch the shows.
I'd love the chance to fish with Mike D, but I feel like that is the day I would go out and get skunked!
Maybe they'll decide to do a Lunkerville episode from the next Bassresource.com fishing trip. That might be fun...
Mentioned this in another thread but I also find the FLW web series FLW Circuit Breaker to be very entertaining. While it isn't extremely informative into actual fishing it is a very interesting and fun look at how professional tournament fishing really works and the lives of those who are professional bass guys. I highly recommend it. This season is covering the 2015 season of Mark Daniels Jr, a 2nd year FLW tour pro.
I hate that there are commercial breaks every two minutes. The show is basically one long commercial. Guess those shows are good when winter come thru, but could use tons of improvement. Like having more trout fishing shows. Never understood why ppl make a big deal of crappie fishing, sunny fishing. I guess I got bored with fishing for warm water fish. Don't like fishing in pond or lakes. But that's just my opinion. Plus there are way more streams to fish on than lakes or ponds.
I like lunkerville, host is not advertising items every two seconds.also like a fishing story, not much fishing, but a good quality show if you listen to the guest stories.Bill dance is ok,cant get over how he handles big fish. Holding a big fish by lower jaw, holding it up to the camera looks painful to the fish?! Shaw advertises to much along with roland and scott. Timmy horton, honey hole. are very good informitive shows! Hank parker is also quality programming. It seems as though they could come up with more quality shows instead of repeating the same show over and over.MLF dont care for at all.bassmaster has changed, where there is not 5 minutes of fishing in an hour program.Flw is ok could be better with editing.Bring back the old show called a fishing hole, some of the classic are better.

Bingo. They're info-tainment. Good call.
MLF is a lot of fun. But since we ix-nayed
cable except for basic, we...okay...I miss
a lot of fishing shows....
I saw MLF for the first time the other day and liked it.Kept rooting for the last guy to get a fish that hadn't caught one yet.Didn't care for the attitude of a couple of them. But the show reminded me of the years I fished tournaments. For the most part the lakes I thought I knew the best I ended up doing the worst on.And the lakes I knew less,I did better on . Go figure.
Top shows for me are the Lindner's and Joe Bucher Outdoors. Al Lindner is in the Freshwater Hall of Fame primarily known nationally as a walleye fisherman. Joe Bucher is also in the FWHOF known primarily as a Muskie fisherman. And yet both will fully admit their favorite fish by a long shot are smallmouth. I find both shows highly informative in how to prepare, present, and catch smallmouth (largemouth too).
Just started watching MLF this past year and that is really growing on me.
I probably like shows more today from a learning standpoint and think the above 3 are some of the better ones ...
I forgot to add Lake Commandos. Steve Pennaz is a quality guy and I like the set up of 2 guys developing separate strategies to figure out a new lake they've not fished before. Isn't that what we do almost every time we go out? Steve did the North American Fisherman show for 25 years and I learned a ton from Knot Wars!

I found this series this year as well. The Casey martin ones are the most epic! Truly inspiring and makes me want to fish the FLW circuit.
It seems like B.A.S.S. doesn't have much concern or support for the grassroots and weekend warrior anglers compared to the FLW. Perhaps that's my jaded view but for example, if I won the National championship this year, They wouldn't pay for me to fish the Elite Series next year and give me a boat and truck. You get to fish the Classic once and "try again next year."
Doesn't seem like much incentive to keep investing into Bass Nation Federation when they don't give much back to the anglers that do.
But I'm young, perhaps I'm just biased and lacking wisdom/ insight on the matter......
