Thinks more about fishing, and or wanting to go when i cant? What does everyone do in the winter time?
i snowmobile in the winter and hit the gym whenever i can as well as organize tackle as much as i can
I just go fishing in the winter, but then again, I'm in Florida.
Actually had to wear socks with my Crocs day before yesterday when I went. Still in shirt sleeves though.
-Read up on books, articles
-Practice short casts and pitches in the backyard snow.
-Reel maintenance
-Tackle re-organization
-Tie skirts for jigs, spinnerbaits, etc. (I'm trying this for the first time this year).
I fish, just have to wear a jacket, pick up the swimbait rod and the a-rig and go. Then again it's supposed to rain pretty good this winter in S.Cal so might have to put on my rain gear and deck boots as well. But I'll still be fishing.

Winter ?
Winter for some like Raul is 65 deg lows ...
I try to get out if the water isn't frozen. If there is ice I reorganize tackle, sharpen hooks, and check out my fishing holes. I also look for new lakes to fish in.
I know how you feel. Believe me I do.
But it's a long hard cold winter for those of us who have to endure it so I try not to torture myself.
I ease up a bit on the fishing stuff at least a little. Working out - some dog sledding, and the NFL & NHL help distract me a bit.
And although I always say I'm not going to do it, as the spring time nears, I will admit to working myself up into a rather wild frenzy . . . .
A-Jay
I bowl .hunt , hike, metal detect ...I love winter even if I cant enjoy my favorite sport .
I ice fish, snowmobile, and make lures. I may travel to go fishing if we have ice late into spring.
Ice fish. Read fishing books n mags, organize tackle, keep batteries charged once a month, restring some reels, research bodiesvof water.
Stare at boat.
Sadly I finally put the kayak and all the tackle away today.
Now I just make sure all the gear is ready for spring spawn.
Winter time is for snow shoeing and shooting guns.
i still fish. i either go trout fishing in spring fed creeks or if he water is still soft i take out the kayak. if that fails i go climbing...
I mold, paint and dress jigs, organize tackle and rearrange the tackle room.
Thankfully, the window of no-fishing in my parts
of VA are narrow. Much more narrow than when
I lived in Western NY. Don't miss it there at all...
There's no "bass season" here, as it is year around.
I'll keep fishing when time permits, and honey-do
lists don't overrule fishing time.
I have a boat that's a pain to tow, unload, load and park, recover, etc. But I have a friend who will fish maybe once a week in the coldest weather. He's my real-time fishing report. And I'll go with him every couple weeks, weather permitting. Beyond that, I watch YouTube vids and buy stuff online for next season.
I went today in the kayak. As long as it's sunny and mild, that'd an otpion.
As long as the wind not blowing bad, I will fish year round. I pretty much fish the area that I launch from.
I wish I could just hibernate and wake up when the ice is off the lakes.
I started learning how to play the guitar last winter to help pass the time. I'm still doing that. I also just bought an ATV (Polaris Sportsman 570), so I think I am going to spend some time riding that. Other than that, work, tackle inventory, re-spooling my reels, watching fishing shows on youtube and TV are going to have to do.
Beer and scotch help. Otherwise, lots of videos and reading. Also try to get in some fishing if we are able to get someplace warmer.
I hunt.
Not very often I'm not thinking about fishing.
Thanks to 2 power plant lakes within a reasonable drive for a day trip, I fish all winter long.
I workout and buy fishing tackle that I will never use lol. I think I have gotten better at purchasing things I know I will put to good use though. I have a few rods to build and have taken up reading books on American history.
Winter is the time to get caught up on all the odds and ends around the house. Every hour spent on them over the winter is one more hour I can spend on the water when the weather is much warmer.
Come next season the only stuff I do around the house is mow the lawn, and tend to the gardens. It takes me a couple of hours to trim and mow the lawn per week, and less than that to putter around in the gardens. I can fish seven days per week, weather permitting when the warm weather arrives. There are two excellent small ponds no more than five minutes from my door. One is a quarter mile across and a half mile long. The other is a half mile across and about a mile long. Both produce numbers and size.
I fish those two ponds from my canoe with a trolling motor. One has a public ramp, the other is surrounded by private property.
Sit around bored. And setup my aquaponics system so I can keep a couple of pet yellow perch.

Dam, i am moving the Western NY, buffalo, to be exact in Jan. I heard i won't be able to fish until Apr. What am i gonna do?
I also have a list of things to get caught up on. No problem. They seem to get done. But, I also shoot a lot of trap, skeet and sporting clays during the year. A lot of my shooting can be done at night during the week. I like to play around with some trout during the winter. Trying to self teach myself to fly fish over the last few winters. The trout are very close to home also.
I love the winter fishing. Quite serene usually all alone on the water. Light wind, little bit of snow falling, I`m in heaven.
Take care of the honey do`s in the heat of summer..

Generally when I can't fish, I wait for someone to post what is the best $100 rod or reel.

Lol I just moved from buffalo. If your north of the 90.. You use your shovel a normal amount... If your south of the 90... Buy a snow blower. Maybe a truck and plow.
Unless you ice fish... April is going to be a likely starting time.
Currently on my Winter Reading list:

Where did you find the Denny Brauer book? That would be a great read anytime!
It's real bad for us up here in Ontario, Canada we will have ice in a couple weeks from now, then bass doesn't open again until mid June next year.
Ice fishing and a mid winter trip week long down south helps, but it's still unbearable at times!

On Amazon for a few dollars, used.
And get this -- when it arrives, here is what I find on the inside:
:
Watch basketball
From the time I put the boat away for the winter till I get out again in the spring, I am always thinking about fishing. I ice fish a little, but it's of no help. I do have other hobbies, but none that I am as stupid for as bass fishing.

Fish in the freezing 40 degree weather in Cali.
Steelhead.
Just replaced all my split rings and hooks on all my hard baits. After hunting season ends, I usually go stir crazy until the ice freezes.
I get to open water fish all winter. It gets cold here in the eastern panhandle of WV but I'm lucky that the river I fish doesn't freeze. And it has some walleyes in it. And once in a while I even get one of them to bite.
Sinking brush and fishing during warming trends. Power plant lake nearby does'nt hurt. Things slow down, I like what the guy said about having the lake to yourself. Wintertime on the water can be a different world.
Fish, workout, spend time with my family, repeat.
In winter i go fishing. Y'all should really try Florida XD
I spend as much time as I can in my deer stand and in my shop tinkering with hunting and fishing gear. Here is a small buck I just got this past month.

I never hated and loved a post at the same time. Made me laugh. Lmao.
I tend to read, workout and revisit all my tackle. Since I just discovered I like saltwater Fishing from the surf I have a few books to get me ready for that next year too. I also ice fish so now it's just a matter of waiting for the lakes to freeze over.
Ice fishing! And lots of reading, a little snowshoeing, some grouse hunting, and plenty of bass tackle fondling.
Tight lines,
Bob
Good thread....................................................... I'm so sick of living in the North East. Making the best of it.
I pike fish through the ice a little but it gets boring to me. so i organize tackle, read articles, and pretty much just prepare for next year. i try to keep my mind off it and do other hobbies or else it would drive me nuts.

Same here did some Surf Fishing down the Shore... Let's just say I'm scoping out a couple of Penn Fierce II reels, and surf rods over the winter.
snowboarding and poker help me get through it.

Awesome. My experience was fishing the Outer Banks a few weeks ago. Looking forward to doing more of this next year. The Jersey Shore and Long Island are a hop, skip, jump from my parents home so I intend to get there from time to time. I will let you know when I am going ... maybe we can link up.

Nice "small" buck. That is a great looking buck, congrats.
I just started bass fishing seriously this summer. Here in Tennessee I should be able to continue fishing through December before it gets crazy cold. Even then, I should be able to squeeze in a few days in Jan and Feb.
I know one thing. I have never looked forward to a spring more than this one since I was a youngster crazy about baseball. Can't wait for the spring frenzy!
Belgian and Sour Ales, Concerts, and Billiards...I still buy fishing stuff all winter long and get prepped for our first spring smallie trip way in advance.
Last year was a tough winter in Florida.
We had TWO back-to-back mornings with a light frost!!
Happily though, it was back in the high 60s by the afternoon
Roger
nothing changes except for going hunting too.
Spend more time with my wife, fish when I can, reel maintenance, make jigs and blade baits, play my guitars a lot, watch Jayhawks basketball.
Tom
It doesn't have to be winter. I think about going fishing pretty much whenever I'm not fishing. I could spend 11 hours on the lake and by the time I get the boat in the garage, I'm already jonesing to get back out there. Here in the great state of Texas, we're fortunate to have relatively mild winters and power plant lakes that rarely get cooler than 60 degrees, so there's pretty much no winter downtime like bassers in the North. In fact, summer is about the worst time down here because we have so many days over 100 degrees with a heat index that brings the temps to a "feels like" temperature of over 17,000 degrees.
I really start to focus on basketball more. Last year during the winter I increased my vertical by 6 inches. This year I would like to develop my handles more and also develop a pivot low post game.
I'm rehabbing my canoe. Something to do and rewarding:
I feel for you fellas! After reading all this, I guess it's worth suffering through the summer down here in Cajun land. It's either fish, hunt, and sleep or hunt, fish, and sleep down here. Thank God

Awwww. I feel so badly for you. Post your address and I'll send you a sympathy card.
I drive my wife so crazy that when spring comes, she's HAPPY to see me go fish for 12 hours day after day
Nice buck papa. I've been doing some trout fishing the last few weeks. Been doing pretty good, They're stocked and hold over fish but I don't care. Trying to teach myself to fly fish. I'll get into some wild trouts after the holiday. My shooting buddies and I have been shooting a lot of sporting clays. We have a great time.
I build lures and jigs and visit this forum way too often.

Like the bass themselves, I am slowing down but not entirely stopping this winter. (The last couple of winters I had no choice due to blizzards and below zero temps).
I work, read (currently In-Fisherman Smallmouth, In-Fisherman Walleye, and a western, Saddle Tramp) and spend time with the family besides fishing.
Now is also a time for reel maintenance and working with the kids on their casting, archery, and firearms.

Man its been up in mid 60;s to 70s in ky here past week so glad i didnt witnerize the boat yet!

I did the filler, sanding and installed the kevlar skids. My nephew is doing the paint work.. he coated the kevlar with rocker panel spray to give the kevlar a nice finished look.
I haven't decided how I'll trim it out.. ??
Pic's are first coat of black and the raw kevlar curing.

I'd be intrested
I'm leaning towards installing new vinyl gunnels rather than wood. I suppose I'd be taking the easy way out.
Any opinions aside from the wood looking better?
last longer maybe?
I decided to go with wood. Here are some progress pics.
