Rude Anglers 2024

fishing user avatarDam Yankee reply :

I fish Toledo Bend regularly and am starting to get frustrated with the anglers that are so rude they will troll right up to where I am fishing and casting my bait and troll right over it. Then they have the nads to ask me how it is going.

I don't treat others this way. Anybody got some good suggestions?

I was fishing the edge of a timberline next to a grass mat. There seemed to be one spot where I was getting bit and catching fish. This other boat came all the way up the timberline and it took about 30 minutes to troll to my spot. Just as he got directly over my bait I said,"hey, you are right where I am throwing my carolina rig." He started out with this speech  on how long he has been fishing this lake blah blah blah.

I interupted him and said ,"then you should know."

He said "know what?"

I replied,"How big the dam lake is!"

To him, unless I was fishing in a tournament or I was anchored he could go anywhere he wanted. I explained to him that I wouldn't do it to him and I only expect to be treated as I treat others. I also told him we could probably increase our cath if we spread out a little bit!. I am getting frustrated with people like this.

I have a hard enough time just finding and catching fish. I don't need rude anglers thinking they own every inch of the water.

Just curious as to how others handle these kind of situations.

Done venting,

Tom

fishing user avatarFL_Sharpshooter reply :

I'd probably just ignore the situation and be the better person to walk away. I wouldn't let it get me down. I can understand the frustration though.  Some people are just born without manners.

fishing user avatarBassn Blvd reply :

I feel your pain. I lost my temper in a tournament a few months ago over the same exact thing. I've been fishing a spot ALL night, literally never moved. A boat (husband/wife team) came trolling up to me from directly behind my rear. They get about 15 yards from my rear and then turn , trolling right fricking next to me. They get to my front and cut directly in front of me and continue trolling the bank.

As the guy passed next to me I said "feel free to cut right in front of me." He said "Thank You!" Now, I'm not a confrontational kind of person but his "thank you" sent me over the edge. I cast my swimbait (with braid) in front of him and snagged his line. I set up announcing "I got a nice one." He said "you got me!" I said "No way! I got a fish!" and proceeded to do battle with this imaginary fish until we came unsnagged. He proceeded to say he can fish anywhere he dang pleases. I cranked up the big motor, putted up next to him, threw it neutral, revved it up a bit and proceeded to do a doughnut around him.

Don't ask me what I was thinking because I wasn't. I was so ticked off.

I guess there's not a whole lot we can do about people like that, other than try to ignore them.

everybody has old lures they could care less about in their box, put one on, preferably with a treble hook, and cast it onto their carpet, then pull a couple of times. should give them a clue..

Or you could get completely naked and just keep fishing   without saying a word. I promise, they'll leave.

fishing user avatarDam Yankee reply :

I can be confrontational after 25 years in the Army but, I don't want to be. It's a huge lake and it is extremely rare that I find a spot where I can catch fish. It was one of those spots on a spot where you have to cast in a certain place and this guy just hit my magic button. My first instinct was to throw a rattle trap at him but I really didn't want to get into it like that. he was so close I could have casted my C-rig into his boat. I did find out the guys name after asking around.

It makes me want to do the same thing to him but, that would make me no better than him. I understand that it is easier to just ignore it and move on but, at some point I get tired of being cordial to morons.

I am just about crazy enough to try that. Hope it isn't too cold next time!!

fishing user avatarSam reply :

I guess I have been fortunate never to have such an encounter.

I have had ski boats make donuts on purpose to create a big wake to screw me up.

Your story is why we don't carry weapons with us when we go out on the water, unless it is on Falcon.

I have no idea what I would have done in your situation. Probably just laughed and moved on.

I like the suggestion to get naked. After playing high school sports and being in the Army I have no problem getting naked, as long as the temperature is above 70*.  ;D   ;D   ;D

fishing user avatarCaptain Obvious reply :

Think what the pros must feel like when that happens in a $100,000 tournament.

Just smile and leave, a huge wake around his boat :)

fishing user avatarculprit71 reply :

I haven't had that experience yet in a boat, as I fish from a canoe and most bigger boats keep their distance, but I have had thsi happen to me while bank fishing.  There is this old kind of hermit like guy who rides around on his old rusty 10 speed stalking bass around Newton Lake in South Jersey.  It's a rather long lake and there is enough room around the lake not to crowd others. He literally walked right in front of me almost as I was casting and I just looked at him dumbfounded and shook my head.  I figured when you get to be his age if you can get enjoyment out of something like fishing, then I'm going to just hope that I can enjoy it as long as he has and that when I'm 85 that I can still cast one and some whippersnapper will get out of my way.  Plus I think he was a few puddings short of a snack pack.

LOL,  I left out one small detail.  "Hawk" was sitting in the back pedestal seat when I started my doughnut.

I was so ticked that I forgot he was back there. Thank the Lord he didn't fall in but I can only imagine what went through his mind when I took off.

I bet he was hanging on for dear life.  Man that would have been epic to have on video.

fishing user avatarDam Yankee reply :

I don't know what it is. Maybe I am a rude magnet or something but, this was about the 4th time this has happened to me on the Bend. Usually my friend that fishes with me tells me to keep quiet because he knows me but, this time he wasn't with me.

It seems even worse if some see you catch a fish. Never seen anything like it.

I did have a good experience one time though. I remember one time I was fishing in Housen and catchin fish. There was a guy in the area fishing also who was watchin me. He was in a tournament and we got close enough to chat. After talkin a little bit I told him to bring his boat over here as i needed to head back across the lake anyway and take this spot. I was just catchin solid keepers nothin big and I was only out for the enjoyment and wanted to check out another spot. Some of you will probably call me crazy but, I had no problem with it. I figured it was more important to him than me and he was a pretty nice guy it seemed.

fishing user avatarmikeeasttn reply :

Have had this happen to me.  My grandson and I be fishing at his favorite bluegill bank and adult anglers come up and fish the same spot and sometimes even hook mine or his line.  I just up the electric motor, set him in my lap and jam the hot foot to the floor and let the 300 Mer talk to them as we go around 2 or3 times with jack plate and motor trimed to the bottom.  Have done this for a while and the 3 boats that where doing this got the point.  You will not believe the waves a 300 will make.  Will bring a 19' boat they fish in nearly out of the water.

I fish that lake quite a bit - I grew up there, it's where I learned to fish. I can vouch for the occasional oddball. Most are harmless. The further you get away from Route 30 (White Horse Pike) and head towards Haddon Township, the better it gets. I've not run into any problems with other anglers there.

Big bass in there, though they can be tough to find.

He was probably overcompensating for the absence of his two close friends. 10 bucks says they're in his wife's purse.

Pontoons ARE the minivan of boats after all.

fishing user avataroteymc reply :

There is just no reason to do that to another angler.

fishing user avatarChrisAW reply :

I've had problems like this before. I usually just ignore it and move, not like I'm fishing for money or anything.

But there was one time when I had been trolling slowly along a shoreline for about half an hour. I hear some guy come flying out of no where and stop 30 feet in front of me and started fishing. So I just moved about 150 yards down the shoreline and started fishing again.

About 10 minutes later, he starts up his motor and blasts right up by me and stops right infront of me again. That started to get me a little agitated. I wasn't even catching anything big and he keeps cutting me off.

So I decided to move again. I shot across to the other side of the lake. I started fishing and ended catching a 16"er within a few casts. Low and behold, here comes that dude again, cuts me off about 40 feet infront of me. That was it for me. I cranked the trolling motor to 5 and went around infront of him, and he had the nerve to ask me, "What the &?$@ man?" I just told him to quit cutting me off and started to fish again. So he starts casting out infront of my boat, effectively still cutting me off. So I grabbed my jig rod thats spolled with 50# braid and crossed his line. He started to reel in as fast as he could and as soon as I felt his line tugging mine, I set the hook as hard as I could and snapped his lure off his line.

He just stood there glaring at me. I told him to go find his own d**n spot or he's going to keep losing lures. He started up his boat and ran back across to the other side of the lake.

fishing user avatarbryand82487 reply :

When someone gets right in front of me on a lake I normally just turn the trolling motor on high and go right around them and start fishing again in front of them.  The thing that makes me so mad is when fishing below pickwick dam in the fall.  There are many yachts and cruisers in the fall headed south for the year and they don't slow down when they get a couple of hundred yards from fisherman.  They keep there distance but man these waves are HUGE!  Sometimes they throw the front of my bass tracker so high out of the water that my entire trolling motor comes out of the water then my boat smacks back down on the water.  Once I even took on water from there wake.  Not to mention if I'm pretty close to the bank it makes it even more dangerous if I don't start the motor quick and try to get off the bank.  The current produced by the dam makes fishing below it dangerous enough I don't need them to make it worse!  There's been times I'm glad I don't carry a gun on the water or I would have sank one of those dang things.   ;D

fishing user avatardone reply :

Sometimes folks just make boneheaded moves without thinking about it. I have been guilty of this from time to time.

Though these do not sound like it was accidental especially with their response to you. Comes down to 1 thing. For folks today life is about 1 thing....them. They are the focus of the world and the rest of us are irrelevant. I see a lot of this, especially with ski boats on Lake Wylie but also from anglers.

Unless it is something REALLY bad, I pretty much let it go. I ain't ruining my entire day by arguing with an idiot. It would only serve to lower my IQ and I need all the IQ points I got.

fishing user avatarjdw174 reply :

You want rude?  C'mon down to Kentucky Lake during the spring crappie run.  I absolutely refuse to fish the Big Sandy area until it's over.  If you're lucky enough to find a bank to run, I guarantee you won't have five minutes before a pontoon full will come banging right in in front of you, toss out several anchors and a half dozen lines right next to your boat. >:(   I normally just boot the TM into high and go around them, but.......    I give everyone else space and figure it would be nice if they did the same.

fishing user avatarfishfordollars reply :

Mixing water with a boat is like mixing Crown/water to some people. They just lose it.

Six months ago on Rayburn i was fishing a ledge out on the lake. A kid in a new Ranger came from a thousand yards on plane within thirty yards of me. He shut it down and with out killing the big engine motored right up over where I had just thrown and hit the GPS. Put it in reverse, backed out ten yards, motored to the rear of the boat, and hit the GPS again. I could have jumped from my boat to his.

I didn't say a word, just pulled up the TM, fired up, and left the area.

Get used to it, it's going to get worse.

Why don't some of the good people of BR that build lures come together and design a lure for just this purpose! ;D I would like to preorder the 3 ounce version of whatever they come up with!

They already make a giant jitterbug, gliddin' rap and subwalk that would work pretty well.

3 ounce catfish or surf casting sinker would also do the trick.

I vote for a remote control submarine that has a drill on it... Simply launch at annoying angler, drill several holes, all while smiling and waving. Then laugh as their boat becomes part of the structure.

LOL ;) JK

But still :D

fishing user avatarCWB reply :

Pulled up about 100 yards behind a guy fishing the deep weedline and started throwing my Rage Shad and promptly caught 3 nice fish. I saw the guy looking back at me as I landed one of them and he quickly turned around. He was fishing the weed edge and I was throwing over the weeds. I kept on my path and eventually we got parallel with eachother but I was about 30-35 yards inside of where he was. I heard him mumble something and I said excuse me? He then repeated loudly " the @#*!! lake ain't big enough you couldn't find another spot?" I calmly explained that I pulled in far behind him and he was the one that turned around and encroached on me. He then said "I can hit you with a cast" I stood up and said "give it your best shot" knowing he wouldn't come close, which he didn't. I said, yeah, that was too close for comfort. He said the wind must have switched and trolled away with his tail between his legs. Happens daily on the smaller natural lakes close to Chicago. Just have to grin and bear it. Always at least pretend like you are writing down the numbers of their boat. They'll think twice about messing around if they think you are reporting them. Then again, maybe some idiots just don't get it and never will.

I was putting in, on a small lake in Michigan, when three out of staters pulled up to put in.  They asked about the fishing and I gave them some advice about the crappie fishing.  I went out and was casting a small (1/16 oz) jig.  I saw that boat load coming toward me.  As I cast, the last time, they trolled across where my jig had landed and pulled in a 15-16 inche crappie.  They showed it to me and asked if that was the kind I had been telling them about.  I just said, "yeah" and left.  I vowed then to never tell any stranger anything about the fishing in any lake I put in at.  That was 25 years ago and I have never changed my attitude.

I enjoyed reading through this thread, and can certainly relate.

Perhaps it's due to my upbringing, but I've always had a short fuse for inconsideration.

If a fellow angler exhibits just a shred of consideration, there will NEVER be a problem.

On the other hand, when inconsideration dominates the scene,

I'll feel the same adrenaline rush I did when I was in my early 20s.

Isn't it amazing how little our basic nature changes?

As a benefit of advanced age though, I always remind myself

that getting through a negative confrontation without responding in kind,

puts me On Top of the situation. Sometimes, I can actually do that,

'sometimes' ;)

He makes a wide turn and comes back even closer and swerves at me, laughing. I scream obscenities. The third time I was ready, he was headed straight for me and right before he turned I lobbed a pair of digital scales directly at his head. I missed his head (very glad I did because it could have seriously injured him) but I busted his windshield with the scales and when he pulled up to the pier I jumped in his boat and beat his *** in front of his wife and kids.

I'm not typically a violent person, I don't go looking for fights, and I don't recommend taking the course of actions I did. However, sometimes the adults are the ones that need an attitude adjustment. 40-50 years ago none of these things happened. Why? Because back then people knew they would get their butt kicked for doing stupid things like this.

Its true. If you even look at someone wrong these days you can be arrested for assault, let alone if you actually touch them.

It sounds as if most of the problems come from other recreational water sports, not neccesarily from other anglers. A few wks ago I was going night-fishing at a local FWA. The lake I was fishing has 2 ramps, the 1st on was full of 3 groups of people fishing who had even backed up cars and trucks for a tailgate party. No sweat, I drive to the other ramp where BUBBA and RAY have decided to build a fire in the middle of the gravel boat ramp USING OLD PALLETS! I drive up and just back in-between their trucks and immediately one of them starts giving me lip and asking me why I cant launch somewhwere else! I politely inform him of the rules clearly posted on a HUGE sign 15 feet from the ramp:

1) THIS IS A PUBLIC ACCESS SITE DO NOT BLOCK RAMP

2) NO OPEN FLAMES OR FIRES

3) OUTBOARDS IDLE SPEED ONLY

They get so ticked that one of them acts like he is going to smash my head, so I retreat to the truck for a Colt .45 and my cell to call the sheriff. They backed down and I never finished the call. I was worried about my truck the whole time i was fishing and when I got back the fire was still burning in the middle of the ramp! What a bunch of slobs! I put out the fire and cleaned up all of the nails from the pallets I could find. I would never pull a gun on someone unless I felt my life was in danger and I dont condone this behavior either but these dudes were serious. I am never going out there again unarmed.

Would have paid to see this. Would have also put up any funds to bail you out if need be.

My mom always taught me "two wrongs don't make it right".....I'm still alive because i took her advice.

We gotta ask ourselves sometimes "Is it really worth it?" There's always going to be people like this everywhere you go.

Believe me,I understand 100% where some of you guys are coming from....It's easy to lose it over some idiots in this world today.

fishing user avatarJ. M. Richardson reply :

I dont see why people need to be that rude. I fish a lot of local lakes in Wisconsin and many of them have property on the shore so there are a lot of docks and boat lifts to fish around. One day while fishing with my uncle (mind you this is at 630 in the am) a guy came out and started playing fetch with his dog in the water as we were trolling towards his dock completing screwing up the fishing around the surrounding docks as well. I can understand people not wanting lures and line stuck in their boat carpet or covers, but I never throw near a boat or pier unless I know for sure I can make the cast without getting caught.

It's frustrating since the waters are public and available for everyone to use.

One time though, I ran into some polite recreational boaters. I was fishing along a nice wooden retaining wall next to their property when they came trolling up in their pontoon just as i casted to the the corner where their boat track started. They were polite enough to let me finish my cast which ended up in me hauling in a nice three pounder. After I told them thanks for being patient and waiting for me they complimented me on the catch. Just remember for every a-hole out there, there are also good people who still show some respect.

The good ones outnumber the bad ones by far. I've let this type of stuff bother me at times, but life is too short to spend time much time in anger about it. It happens so rarely that I have to be thankful for all of the polite people I meet on the water. I know if one is fishing in open water areas some skiers and jet skiers will come into your fishing area though I often wonder if it is more due to ignorance than purposely invading fishing space.

Well I have never had problems with anglers being rude. I do have a problem with jet skiers and wake boarders. These events all happened on the same vacation over the summer.

I was fishing the dropoff in front of my cabin. I was maybe 60 yards from the end of my dock which is in about 4ft of water. I was fishing a spook from the shallows over the drop off and all of a sudden I see this 30 or so year old girl on a jet ski fly in between the dock and me. She was very close to running over my spook but I jerked back at the last moment to save it. She did this 2 more times and every single time she just stared at me when she came through. She tried to do it on last time. I was waiting for her with my spook. As she came close I throw my spook out as hard as I could at eye level. I timed it perfectly and the lure was right at her eye level about 20 or 25ft in front of her. She ends up wiping out hard and I am laughing my butt off as she does this. What was even funnier was the fact that my sister was on the dock when this happened so she was laughing her butt off too. The girl ended up getting back on her jet ski and just looks at me again. I yell "Karma's a *****....... Have a nice day" as I'm taking off and laughing as hard as I was. ;D

Part 2 next post

I think you were both idiotic.

Another display by a couple of geniuses. Do you guys really think it is worth it? Why not elevate yourselves?

Lets think of the possible scenarios from your actions...

Guy 1: Hit the person with the spook in the eye, permanently damage her. You celebrate because she won't drive past you again. Celebration ends when you get the medical bills and the guilt.

Guy 2: We'll, it probably will not help to outline the repercussions that could have happened here. I am sure it won't make any difference for you.

All of you acted like juveniles, in my opinion.

No argument there ;) (The pot calling the kettle black)

It's still dumb.  You could have hit her.  A man would have walked away.  If I was there and saw that happen, I wouldn't have been on your side of that argument.
