I try to fish as often as opportunity allows...
but at times I find taking a break from fishing has been good...
I'm wondering am I alone in this ?
2 weeks away from fishing was my shortest time away and 1 month was my longest !
What is this break thing you speak of!!! If it's not frozen, I'm fishing.
The longest break I have ever taken was between the birth of my kids. For about a 2 year period fishing was on the back burner, up until 3-4 years ago, fishing has come back into my life. Fishing helps take the edge off, of all the curve balls life throws at you day in and day out.
My longest break was about 10 years, still kept all the tackle and equipment though.. Picked it back up few years ago and I am hooked again.. I fish whenever I can which isn't as often as I would like. I am hoping to get a boat in the next year or two and plan to go out at least 4 times a month especially since the kids will be older and can come along..
5 days
Never, till I can't get out of the bed to go, till I'm completely burned out.
But this year has been different with my cancer and the radiation treatments. I have an extended life now but I still have on and off side effects from the radiation. This is giving me time to clean and arrange my tackle boxes in order and to upgrade my rods and reels plus get into bait casting more. This down time has made me think more about life and what I'm going to do next. My bucket list as of now is to fish, fish and fish more, non stop in the springtime. I'm ordering more tackle so I'm not out of stock on anything. I have a few extra reels and rods. I hope to wear some out.
The second thing on my bucket list is to hunt coyotes. I lost two of my cats to yotes. One I had all trained she was so smart. The first time she went outside I lost her. Im going to cash in on the pelts too. It's time to cut back on the population. They say here we lost this past generation of fawns here this year to the predators, we need to correct this. Soon it's payback time.
Took a break from tournaments last year, but fished more than ever. I'll go almost a week before getting the fishing delerium tremens.
When it stops raining
Yea I don't know what a break is especially this season. I fish whenever I can
Fishing IS my break.
I will NEVER take a break from my BREAK..
Ask my wife.. she tries to force me..
i have been out once since about the beginning of August. I started taking classes and have dedicated my time to that to make sure i do well and not just get by. I know it is temporary and only about 16 months so it isn't like there is no end in sight. I will most likely get out once a month or so if i can but if not I can deal with that.
Um...well, if there is no safe ice, I guess my break goes from November to sometime in March. That's long enough.
A week because I had the flu in February. All I did was watch fishing videos and read fishing articles.
As long as the water's frozen.
Tom
no break for me son
i fish 24/7 sleep is for the weak
I fish when ever I can I'll take a day or so break if I have plans.... but most of the time when I'm done with my. Stuff for the day I go fishing... on my off days from school I work out then go fishing ...
I took several breaks of a week or more when I was in school, but nowadays I usually go 2-3 days tops. We don't usually get much hard water around here, so even in the winter I'm out there at least 1-2 times a week. A couple times every year I will skip fishing full days for a week or two to rejuvenate, but I still get out there for a half day.

Been fishing right through it, although my focus as of late has been to land big (24" +) chain pickerel. I've been catching some nice ones on topwater in the downpour
No significant breaks for me. As long as my schedule allows I get out on the water at least 1x/wk.
i just got back into it this year but before that i hadnt done any fishing in about 3 years. im hooked again bad buying lures and nice rods and reels. been learning how flip and pitch and use a baitcaster better.
I never really take a break from fishing but towards the end of the year after tournaments i take a little break from bass fishing to catch some stripers.
its not good to take long breaks because it affects your skills, let me explain, for example if you stopped fishing for a year and returned to the same lake or body of water, everything can be very different then the last time you saw it, this happened to me before and you dont know where to start, the Technic that you used a year ago might not work in another time you returned, you have to stay active in that body of water, do you think kevin vandam would be as good as he is if he stops fishing for a while or takes a long break? hope this helps
If we don't use it we lose it. I still staying reading and watching videos on bass fishing. To me losing any bass fishing skills right now will take a while to get back. I'd rather stay going forward with learning more New things. I need to take more notes and write it all down. This way I can refresh if needed. I have a picture in my mind where each area is where I have had success in the past. I need to make notes of this.
I usually fish once a week but if I have a tournament I will sometimes not fish for a couple of weeks leading up to it just to keep myself fresh and "hungry". But I will prefish the day before when I can, to get the most up to date info on where the fish are.
When the water freezes up here.
I've taken years at times, having several other hobbies I'm just as passionate about. I can't hardly go a day without fishing now though, living in the deep south and finally availing myself of a boat. See you at daybreak tomorrow!
I fish when I can. I work two jobs and am finishing a Masters Degree in addition to my family duties, but I suppose my break would be Winter because I live in New England and have no interest in ice fishing.

Sounds like my neighborhood - though I'm on the ocean. I lost a cat years ago to Coyotes and had one in the street staring at me one night just recently. Unfortunately we have a no firearm discharge law in city limits where I'm at and my bow was in the closet upstairs.
Best of luck with your recovery from Cancer. Both my parents had it within the last three years and are clean today. The Chemo & radiation slowed mom down for a while, but the long recovery was successful. Thanks greatly to Dana Farber....
<gollum-speak>What is "break", Precious?</gollum-speak>
I'll get enough breaks when I'm forced to take them by the winter weather.
When the water freezes until opening day, which is usually the last week of April.
I have been gathering my ice fishing equipment I'm thinking the tractor with the snowblower can pull my ice fishing sled on the ice. I may even build me a grumpy old men hut?
A little heat with some hot coffee or hot chocolate and some burgers/dogs could be the hot ticket. Ice fishing could be enjoyable. I could whip up a little Woodstove in a heart beat.
It could make the cabin fever go away.
The affordable insulated guide gear hunting camp clothes keeps me very warm. It's from sportsmans guide. I also bought more insulated camp gear from BPS ON Clearance too.
I have a one piece insulated suit that's good for 40 below. I never got to use my really warm stuff because the past few hunting seasons have been warm. The 1,000gram thinsulate boots are awesome too. My feet are toasty warm even on the ice without heat snap packs.
Ice fishing sounds like a good idea. My first time ice fishing we had 24" of ice in two weeks. My two body builder son's used my Swedish hand operated ice drill.
My only time off is when I am waiting for safe ice to form in the winter, and waiting for the unsafe ice to melt in the spring. I usually ice fish once a week, during the winter. As for bass fishing, I usually fish 3 nights a week after work, and one full day on the weekend. If it's been raining a lot and too wet to work, or were slow at work between crop seasons, I go fishing, sometimes it's 2-3 days in a row IN ADDITION to my usual time on the water. This time of year is when I usually have the longest time between days on the water. It's getting too dark too early to go after work anymore, and were busy with our fall work on the farm, so unless it's raining and/or too wet from the rain, I usually only get out on sunday. I average about 125-130 trips to the water a season (late march/early april - mid/late nov.) So I get out plenty. About the only thing I do besides fish, is work, and spend time with my kids.

I take an 8 hour break every day to go to work, does that count??

Thanks , DaiwaKing , God Bless You too !
I never take a self induced break. I fish 7 days a week and only miss once in a while if there is an emergency or commitment, like my house flooding recently. Even though I have to be home by 8 am when the workmen come, I fish early. In the winter I fish even more, still doing the ocean every morning that's when I get serious about bass fishing in the afternoons. I bet I haven't gone 7 or 8 days without fishing this year.
Longest break because I just didn't feel like fishing was about 8 years. Longest break because of the weather has been about 3-1/2 months.
I only take a break when that white powdery stuff inhibits my fishing. This spring I was throwing a jerkbait with ice forming on my guides and line guide, and I plan to do the same this winter. Due to the odd weather we've had around here in the last couple years I've had some very interesting opportunities, such as fishing a pond on New Years.

yep
My break was my wife having us move 15 min further away that way I can't stop by the lake on the way home .
How Long Of A Break Do You Take From Fishing?
From one trip to the next
In the spring I don't have much time but in the summer most of my mornings are free so I don't a lot of fishing then... in the fall I fish when im not in school or training...
I work a 4on-4off schedule 8am-8pm, so on those days thats my break. Other than thats at least a couple hours everyday on my weekend. If i get swapped to nights for a week or two, 8pm-8am, I still manage to make it for the morning bite...
usually december to mid march. ice sucks =(

We share the same weather my friend...lol.
I stopped fishing for about ten years after most of my regular partners got married or lost interest. A couple of years ago I started back up with a vengeance and am certainly making up for lost time. This year I even participated in a tournament series and did very well.
Unfortunately winter is coming up here and today may have been my last trip for this year. Bass closes end of November and doesn't open again until June. Sigh.
Today, was my last fishing trip till April 2014. I wish I lived in the south, instead of Central Pa. Oh well maybe someday.
Isn't the 40+-hours a week I spend at the dungeon far too much of a break? Anything more than that would be plain unfathomable.....

I'm with Iowa and Aceman on the Winter break. In season, I NEED to fish every day! I think I missed maybe 7 or 8 days since April. I'm divorced since 2000 and I'm trying to make up time from when I had the ball and chain wrapped around my finger...er leg!
Only until ice-out. Bass opener isn't until the first weekend in May but I'm happy to pester the panfish and white bass until then.
I usually shut down around Thanksgiving since that date until Christmas is pretty busy for our family, and then I start up when the weather starts to be bearable again. This is usually mid-late February.
Unfortunately mid to end of October all the way through to April-ish. This is the longest I have gone fishing for bass.
I'm not a fan of the cold and ice fishing just isn't the same. If and I say IF I am lucky my work will send me someplace warm where I might be able to cast a line or two after hours.
I have a 9-5, 15 club tournaments a year and 7-10 pot tournaments a year. If I'm not prefishing, fun fishing, pond fishing or speckled trout fishing 2-3x a year in Port St. Joe, I'm either doing something that relates to fishing OR working
3-4 days and i start getting the shakes and cold sweat! i fish every 2-3 days lately. less in the summer when it's slow and hot!
I stop fishing from the beginning of December till April. I have to winterize my boat and just wait for next spring, because I don't like ice fishing.
