Ever Caught A Bullfrog While Fishing? 2024

fishing user avatarpbizzle reply :

I was watching Facts of Fishing and saw him catch a bullfrog on a hollow body frog. How common is this? Have you done it?

fishing user avatarNot_Here reply :

i've caught them on hollowbodies, bullfrogs eat say like leopard frogs and what ever else can fit in their mouths...i think in the bullfrog mind it goes a little something like this "me see food, me eat, gulp"

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

I've done it several times. Some places there's so many big bullfrogs it gets really annoying when they keep chasing the frog and I keep having to reel it away from them. We used to use a grub on a aberdeen hook to catch bullfrogs for frog legs when I was a kid.

fishing user avatarWayne P. reply :

Yes, several times. I used a small single hook weedguard frog I think was made by Berkley--about 30 years ago.

Bull frogs are cannibles and eat their own.

fishing user avatarGrizzn N Bassin reply :

Yea I have to I hook em in the lip...only happened to me once tho and it was on a hollow body frog

fishing user avatarGrizzn N Bassin reply :

It was a SK sexy frog how could a frog resist!

fishing user avatarpbizzle reply :

Man, I've been left out of this bullfrog stuff. I did have a water moccasin chase my frog once but that's it.

fishing user avatarTheMightyQuinn reply :

One time I had a bullfrog engulf the 9 inch lizard I was throwing. The entire lizard and 5/0 hook was in its mouth...

fishing user avatarDyerbassman reply :

Frogs around here love my plastic worms.

fishing user avatarSnakehead Whisperer reply :

Had to dig through my photos but I finally found one. This frog just jumped on top of my lure but didn't try to eat it. This frog was released mostly unharmed. Caught on a sexy shad Spro popper frog.

I've since learned to differentiate a frog from a fish strike, so I don't really catch them anymore. But they strike pretty frequently. I've also caught a lot of birds and northern watersnakes on topwater ;) The snakes are fun, the birds are just mean.

fishing user avatarpbizzle reply :

I imagine that they don't really fight, but just feel like you're bringing in some weeds.

fishing user avatarCPBassFishing reply :

I've caught at least a dozen this summer. The ponds I fish have about a foot of floating scum all along the bank and whenever I fish frogs along the bank and they come out of the cattails and eat it.

fishing user avatarChristian M reply :

I've caught several big bullfrogs using hollow body frogs. I've heard that bullfrogs are territorial and will chase anything that comes within their area, I don't know how true that is. I did read an article about a technique using frogs to catch Lunker bass. The article recommended using a splitshot or dropshot rig to weigh the frog down using a leader that gives the frog just enough line for the frog to barely reach the surface. It said that the commotion of the frog trying to reach the surface would attract big bass. Never tried it though.

fishing user avatarMr. Wilson reply :

one time my uncle caught a goose--yeah that was interesting--broke the line though---poor bird--lol

fishing user avatarMcFurie reply :

I catch seagulls quite a bit in the fall on poppers. They're rarely hooked, however. They usually will hold onto the lure until I reel them in though, then give me a dirty look as if I'm stealing their fish. They don't fight very well.

Once I caught a peregrine falcon on a popper. It was hooked on it's foot. Unhooking and releasing that bird was one of the scariest things I've done while fishing, but I got it done without getting attacked.

fishing user avatarBig Jon reply :

I just caught one the other day on a Booyah frog.

I caught an owl on a jitterbug while I was night fishing several years ago. Thankfully it crash landed in some blackberry bushes and pulled the hooks loose or he would have been keeping my jitterbug.

No bullfrogs, but i've had a leopard frog latch on and try to mate with a koppler

fishing user avatarDiggy reply :

I havent but I did have some giant godzilla like lizard come after my frog on repeated casts

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

I have never caught one, but I have had several chase a spro frog across the lake.

fishing user avatarQUAKEnSHAKE reply :

A little over a week ago caught one. Had an ika on put the rod down to use  lipless crank rod and the ika rod started moving. Im like wth grabbed ika rod and frog on with trokar hook poking out side of its mouth.

fishing user avatartholmes reply :

I've caught a few bullfrogs on hollow-bodied frogs and on weightless t-rigged plastics.

I once had an osprey grab a Zara Spook and fly off with it. Fortunately, he didn't get hooked. I'm sure that if he had, it wouldn't have ended well.
