What bait & technique?

i would t6hrow into those eddies or have the crank run right by them, the bass chill in the eddies and wait for food to go buy then dart out grab the food and go back, it saves them energy.

Fishing rivers is all about reading current and understanding your species relationship to current. I don't know Kentucky's but as soon as 1 is caught I would start building.

Infront of that pile of rocks will be fished by everbody but if you get a bite it's important to how much current was present and keep building.

I agree with the Bandit 100, would even go with a bandit 200. If that doesn't work, Mepps Black Fury#3 with red dots...

I would try one of Storm lures Hybrid crankbaits like the Thunder Core Scoot N' Craw or a Wildeye Soft Shad. Both are crankbaits but also have some of the advantages of soft plastics.

Catt, do you have any of the older, original Wiggle Warts? They work great on shallow spotted bass in current.

Ranger364v, you must have missed the statement in the original post that Catt was challenged to fish for bass with crankbaits. Just a head's up. I skim posts sometimes and miss things too.

I would stick with Bandit 100s, 200s, Chartruese Back, white sides.

I don't know kentucky that well but most rivers are similiar. Read the current and like a previous poster said focus on those eddies. I personally would throw a lipless crank (crawfish RED) in this case. Rattle Traps are my favorite so im a little biast . Good luck to ya

Toro Creek is located below the Toledo Bend levee; it is used for flood control when the lake level needs to be dropped with out opening the main generating gates at the Sabine River Dam. The water temperature stays in the upper 40's due to the fact the water is coming from a spill way at bottom of the levee which is 110' deep.

The creek has a huge population of Kentucky Bass, limited Largemouth, and some Stripers. It gets little fishing pressure to speak of with most visitors canoeing, kayaking, or swimming.

I would go with the ratltrap. 1/4 oz.

I would make a quatering cast upstream and reel it down and accross the current and into the eddies downstream.

I agree with Avid's technique. Completely.

I would prefer throwing a Lucky Craft RC 3.5 in Copper Green or American Shad.

Toro Creek is my second favorite fishing hole; the wife/kids will swim while I wade fish.

Of course this is what happens when I wade fish!

Anywhere theres current break that is where your gonna find the bass looking for an easy meal. I would try a Manns ghost grey crank, square bill fished very slow, stop and go technique.

Don't know if you're a spinning rod guy or not, but here goes. Long rod. light line and either a shallow Shad Rap or original floating Rapala. Cast way upstream and twitch it along with the current, letting it pop back up on top every two or three twitches. If you can bring it back to you so that it swirls into an eddy, hang on.

what's the best way to get to the creek?

Can it be fished with both texas and louisiana License?

Larry, take R255 east to hwy 135, turn north on hwy191

The main generating dam is on the Sabine River which you will cross first, about two mile up the road is a small dirt road to the right follow it all the way around to the left and you will end up at the creek. If you cross the spillway you've went too far!

As for the license thing I'm not sure since the Sabine River is the state border putting Toro Creek in Louisiana.

If you go to Yahoo Maps and do a search for Burkeville, Texas you will be able to find is easily, it even shows the dirt road.

Im not sure on the speed of the retrieve but rebel makes a chart. grasshopper with a nice rattle and covers down to around 4 feet also make a teenycraw in a deep diver that go's to around 6 feet. I would try the craw in brown with an orange belly. Hit the ends of the riffles where the water just starts to slow and cast around the rocks there.

I know this is not the appropriate place to post a report on an outing, but I'm dying to know what technique you used.

If you could put in a quick blub and a reference to a more detailed thread in "my outing" that would be great.

I love fishing that kind of water, and there is nothing I am aware of anywhere in Florida that even remotely resembles it.

I used to fish for smallmouth in exactly the same kind of water in NY. Those were my favorite fishing trips.

Sigh!!. Tell your story brother.

Well avid my friend you gonna have to wait since our weather Saturday was 38 degrees with rain and sleet. Today I'm off but I'm watching my 2 1/2 year old granddaughter while her mother has surgery. Then I work for the next 5 days so needless to say I don't know when I'll be able to hit Toro
