Went to my favorite fishing hole today.A flock of birds flew in they were about the size and color of a mockingbird. However these birds could hover like a hummingbird. They would fly down within inches of the water. They attracted some big bass and they made some really acrobatic attempts to catch these birds but I didn't see any of the bass catch them.
I threw everything in my tackle box to try and them but they were only interested in the birds.Has anyone else seen this happen?Would also like to know what kind of birds these were.
Also thinking about making a remote controlled bird bait.
My cousins in Ohio have a huge pond that we fish in every year... They have carp and bass, and a duckling was eaten by a carp, but I never saw it with a bass... :-/ 1 or 2 years ago, there was a pretty big bass on my line, it must have been about 14-17 pounds, and it's eye was almost as big as when you make a circle with your thumb and pointer finger together.... It got to the dock, then it broke my line.... 8-)

In Ohio?
Carp do not eat ducklings! Maybe a pike but a carp no way!

Hmmmm
Carp turned carnivore and 17lb bass in Ohio,...what's this world coming to?? :-?
What you observed more than likely was both bird and fish chowing down on bugs, not bass jumping out of the water for flying critters.
No idea of what type of bird that may have been.
In one of Lau's videos he has footage of a bass trying to eat a baby ducklig. The duck got away.
Filming was in Florida so I know the bass down George's way get large enough to eat small birds if they wish.
George, let us know what they bird is and when you start producing the lure!!!! ;D
Bass are known to jump out of the water for dragonflies, maybe that's what you saw?

I didn't say exactly 17 lbs. I meant it felt like... Again, I only saw his head. But the carp really did get a duckling...
I saw some birds hovering over the water this weekend (IL). They looked like huge hummingbirds, but they obivously weren't. I'd like to know what they are though.
I grew up in OH. One aunt would give us ducklings at Easter and we would release them into my grandfather lake. Almost every duckling we put in the lake would get eaten by snapping turtles. Luckily, we liked eating turtles, so in the end it was a fair.
Ok a carp's mouth is to small to eat a duck. Plus as LBH mentiond, carp are not carnivores. Are you sure it was a carp?
That would be cool to witness somthing like that rbrick!! If the bass were keying on the "birds" (whatever they were) I can see how it would have been tough to catch them. I bet the hoverlure system might have worked.
Never seen a fish eat a bird...
But I have seen birds swooping down and picking off schooling baitfish. (Just awesome 8-))
I saw a bass suck down a duckling one time...well I guess I cant verify that it was a bass but the only other thing in this pond is crappie and bluegill. A hen was swimming with her 5 ducklings making all sorts of racket when I saw a huge explosion near the last duckling. Needless to say there were only 4 ducklings after the blow up and they hurried to shore. It was one of the neatest things I have seen. However I agree that a carp would probably not eat a duck.
If a bass is willing to jump out of the water to eat a dragon fly I have no doubt in my mind one would try to jump out to ****** a bird. I have had bass jump at least 6" out of the water to nab a yellow frog I had hanging form a branch. I also used to have a 75gl tank that housed an Arrowana, a Largemouth, and a Peacock Bass. I would hold shad by the tail about 4-6" above the water and all three of them would jump out of the water to grab the shad. It don't think bass chase birds on a regular basis but I sure believe they would.

This is hilarious. : :

I have the bass on video. The thing was huge. My dad has it, and if there is a way to post it, I will....
And my cousins own the pond and have had it in their part of the family for a LONG time.
I'd be willing to bet you saw a bunch of swallow's,we have a pond out back of the house and have watched them do that very same thing.....Alan
The only 2 things they told us was that they had Carp and Bass, they didn't say anything about any other fish... And they even said that it was a carp who did it.
I saw a bass eat a cardinal off of a low limb once will never forget it.
Think I found the bird, black tern.

Ok, I don't think anyone is calling you a liar. We just think you're confused. The record LM Bass for Ohio is just over 13 lbs and that was caught back in the late 70's. I'm sure you had a really nice Bass. Just nowhere near 17 lbs. Carp are not carnivorous and don't eat Ducks. They have very small mouths. Maybe it "looked" like it ate a Duckling? Maybe it was a rogue Catfish? :-?

I can post it, email me
what we are saying, regarding the carp, is that they don't eat meat. Not even other fish, etc. They are the VEGETARIANS of the water.
Ok, I can understand that it would be hard to believe that a carp wouldn't eat a duckling but to say that they don't eat meat is just wrong. Carp are omnivorous, not vegetarians. I have caught them on jigs, drop shots, and my girlfriend even caught one on a shallow crank, and no it wasn't snagged either.
Ive caught plenty of nice 10+lb carp on curly tail grubs. I also have caught a 28lb carp on a crayfish imitation. And seeing that i have caught several carp up to and over 20 lbs, a carp would have to be nearly 100lbs to have a mouth big enough to swallow a duckling. Those 20lbers' mouth were not much bigger than the width of 2 fingers
Ive seen a bass pull a duck down when I was wade fishing at the lake. It had it by the tail feathers and there was a lot of sqaucking and splashing. I saw mouth and tail so I know it wasnt the gator doing it cause it was a fish. Ducky got away but I wont ever forget that scene. I fish that lake for the monsters all the time. Hope one day Ill hit a monster like that and get a pic of it.

There is a reason they say Ohio is "high" in the middle. LOL.
