Anyone Fish Loon Inhabited Waters 2024

fishing user avatarMaico1 reply :

Just curious do they chase your SwimBaits...I have to stop fishing for they chase mine right up to my boat.

fishing user avatarYungAngler reply :

unfortunately, I hooked one on a local lake.  Didn't t notice it in the area diving, but I thought I caught a rock or a log, and up comes loon.  I'm much more careful of my surroundings, especially on lakes with a healthy population of loons.  Amazing birds, love seeing them out there, but they make me nervous.

fishing user avatarFrogFreak reply :

I fish around them a ton. I've never had an issue with them. Gulls on the other hand always seem to dive bomb my poppers.

Loons usually do not do that. Your swim bait must a pretty realistic example.

fishing user avatarMarkH024 reply :

I've only seen loons when I've been up to Canada or they far points of the Wisconsin Northwoods.  Never have i seen them go after lures. Usually if you approach them they swim off or go under and pop back up 20 yds further away.

Your loons sound loony.

Those look like phenomenal swimbaits but $100 a pop right? Can I borrow yours? lol

fishing user avatarCPBassFishing reply :

I'm glad I don't have loons to bite my baby wake :o

LOL, that's retail price. These baits get released 3-4 times a year if that and are gone in minutes. They get resold for double retail all the time.

How do we know of these release dates?  I tried emailing them, I want a few items.  I'm on a pc daily so my timing could be perfect.  Anyone have insight to when 3:16 releases their stuff, let me know.

you just have to get lucky and keep refreshing the site or know the right people. Occasionally mickey drops a hint on the 3:16 FB page.

I fish loon inhabited waters all the time, Never had any issues with them. They just do their own thing and I do mine. Beautiful birds

fishing user avatarScott F reply :

I fish around loons quite a bit but i've never had one chase a bait before. It is so eerie having a loon swim right along side the boat especially if you didn't know one was around. Those big, wide, black and white shapes always startle me when i see them under the water.

fishing user avatarRyneB reply :

I have fished loon waters when I head up to northern Wisconsin. I have never had one bite my bait, but when I see one dive in my vicinity I get nervous.

fishing user avatarmerc1997 reply :

table rock is getting quite a population of loons during the winter. they eat a lot of fish. i have never had one take in my lure while fishing however.

fishing user avatarlmbfisherman reply :

I fish a lot of Loon infested waters and never had problems.  Of course I don't own baits that look like that!  :eyebrows:

I did get a loon when I was in my Kayak, it was very curious.  It came pretty close to me and started making a sound.  So, I decided to leave...didn't understand, but I didn't want to take a chance that it was a warning sound.

Exactly my feeling the first time one came within a few feet on my boat.....and d**n are they fast swimmers.

fishing user avatarjeb2 reply :

I fish in Wisc during the summer and am constantly around loons. Never had one chase any baits. I've seen them swim right under to boat a bunch of times, though.

fishing user avatarhookset on 3 reply :

I fish Squam Lake in New Hampshire where 'On Golden Pond' was filmed. Lots of Loons and they sometimes get curious.

I have to laugh... took a newbie fishing buddy out one day and was showing him these impressive and fairly large birds.

Well, one swam or should I say flew...because that's how they propel themselves underwater.... under the boat and had my friend all geeked out. He just about had a heart attack when that thing went wizzing by in search of bait.

fishing user avatarwnybassman reply :

I've never had a loon go after a bait on me, but they gobble up all my lead sinkers that are 1/2 ounce or less like there is no tomorrow.    Or so they tell me.    :rolleyes7:

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

Never had a loon chase a bait. I have had seagulls pick up free lined shad, an owl pick up my jitterbug, blue herons chase spooks and stab at swimbaits, green herons chase spooks, and kingfishers dive bomb topwaters.

fishing user avatarbrgbassmaster reply :

Yes and i have seen them swimming under the water chasing my pop r before.

fishing user avatartatertester reply :

Loon are common here in northern Minnesota, but, beaver are the ones that will get your attention......Beaver swim right beside your boat and SPLASH that big tail scaring the hell out of you if you hadn't seen them.... Sounds like a 12 guage shotgun exploding.

fishing user avatarbigbill reply :

I have two loons at one small place were I fish at. One scared me one morning at first light he came over the tree tops, right over me and went down to the waters edge. The sounds of his wings in the air was something I never heard before. It was really weird.

This place has beavers too. The male is about 48" long with his tail. He was behind us in the woods one evening as we were fishing. He ran inbetween us to get to the water. He got tangled with my son's line and took his rod/reel into the water. He had a bobber on it luckily so we snagged the bobber and got the rod back. But all the time when this beaver sees me he comes close by and slaps his tail. I talked with the town worker who cleans the screen where the water drains off. The bravest plug it up every night keeping the water levels up. He said there looking for a trailer to remove and relocate them. Every body of water I fish at has freshwater otters and beavers.

fishing user avatarHot Rod reply :

I had an "issue" with one last fall.  It was the only time I've had a problem but it lasted for several days until the thing migrated away finally.

First time I saw it I was pre fishing and it was swimming straight toward me.  Really didn't think anything of it at the time as I was concentrating on the fish but it must have slipped under the water without me noticing.  When I got my lure back to the boat the dang thing shot out like a torpedo out from under the boat and at my jig.  It disappeared, then did it again on the next cast.  The crazy dang thing was using my boat as cover!  Every time I got the lure close to the boat the loon would pop out from under the boat and give chase.  I think he could have easily grabbed my lure, especially on the first couple casts when I wasn't prepared.  But I believe he was waiting for me to reel in a fish or for one to follow my lure in so he could snag it.

I tried smacking the water with my landing net and running  from him for a while with my TM but the bird wouldn't leave.  He was dang persistent.  I finally had to fire up the big motor and leave.

On the mourning of the tournament I show up at my first spot of the day.  I catch a nice smally on the first couple casts.  But the noise of the catch attracts the attention of, you guessed it, the same crazy loon (he had unique markings so I know it was the same bird).  He swam right over to my boat and dove under it to use it for cover from which to attack.  This spot was about a mile or so from the place I saw him the prior day.  I had to give the spot up because I didn't want to waste tourney time messing with him.  Figured as long as he was around the bass would be leery to say the least.  That dang bird sat on that spot all morning too.  Really fried my game plan for the tourney since that was the only place I had found decent fish in practice.   Aghhh!
