Snake Lures? 2025

fishing user avatarBimbelton reply :

Hello all!

Need some advice.  I just saw a website that is selling Snake Lures.  I was watching the videos and these things look REALLY cool -- they have INCREDIBLE action.

Has anyone ever used them?

Are they really as good as they claim to be?

fishing user avatarguest reply :

Hey Check out Doug Hannon's site i think hes the guy who invented them.

fishing user avatarBimbelton reply :

Yeah, that's the site I visited.

Before I ordered them I wanted to know if anyone has had any experience with them to see if they're worth the investement.

fishing user avatarguest reply :

I have no experience but you are lucky Go to the professors corner on the forum thats Doug Hannon Himself, Hes a member just ask him yourself

fishing user avatarBimbelton reply :

that sounds like an idea! ;)

Thanks!

fishing user avatarSPEEDBEAD. reply :

I think there was a post about these not too long ago. I dont know that a lot of people were recommending them.

As far as asking Doug, his answer may be somewhat skewed due to him profiting directly from the sale of those lures. I highly doubt you would hear any downside from him, but ya never know....from what I hear he is a pretty stand up guy.

fishing user avatarBimbelton reply :

I was thinking the same thing.  ;)

fishing user avatarp-funk reply :

From what I remember others posting, they are too light and have to be thrown on spinning gear.  The plastic is really stretchy, and the hookups are extremely tough.  Lightinrod purchased some and said he'd never buy them again.  I have not heard one good thing about them, but the video does make them look awesome. ;)

fishing user avatarBimbelton reply :

Absolutely -- by looking at that video you'd think they were the best thing out there.

Thanks for the info.!

fishing user avatarVyron reply :

I cannot judge a product i havent tested by my self but Lightinrod's words r wisdom

fishing user avatarga_hawghauler reply :

I was wandering the same about these baits. there is another thread started also called the doug hannon water snake that has a little info also. I havent found anything real promising about them but i am not judging them rather being optimistic.

fishing user avatarBimbelton reply :

I'll have to look at that to see what else I can dig up.

Thanks!

I have been throwing 12" worms for a number of years now and they must certainly reproduce the image of a snake in the water. I throw them on #14-#20 test and use a 6'6" MH rod along with a Abu Garcia C3 reel. They have caught some big fish for me here in Maryland. I like the BPS Tournament worms in Green Pumpkin, Red Shad, Watermelon/Red Flake and I saw recently where they added a Dark Melon/Purple Flake to these big worms. One thing about them is you need to wait a second or so before setting the hook. I use either a 4/0 or 5/0 EWG Gamy hooks for these worms. I like to use them weightless in the mid to late spring. My best wt. for them has been light, as in 1/8 to 3/16. When late summer rolls around I have had a lot of luck with them at night and on points with a 1/4-3/8 wt. They excel around spatterdock and reeds. Give them a shot. It may not be a numbers bait but they certainly put some good fish in the boat.

fishing user avatarBimbelton reply :

Sounds good.  I've used worms before but not that big.  I think the biggest I've thrown is 10".

I'll have to give those a try.

Thanks!

fishing user avatarFlatfish reply :

Haven't used Doug's but have used the Tiki Snake in Sweet Potato Pie early in the spring and had good results. These are 5" made by Wave Worm and in the same colors. I believe early in the spring is when snakes have their young and when they hit the water is easy pray for fish. Could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time.

fishing user avatarChris reply :

I have never used the lure your talking about but..Doug had a different snake that had a foam head and a place where you could texas rig a worm to. That bait was a heck of a summer time lure. I used it around weeds and such and it did catch fish.

fishing user avatarguest reply :

I think that doug will give us pointers on how to fish his snake and the conditions in which it should excel.

There are any number of big bass lure designs that he could have chosen to market.  But this is the one he selected so I'll assume he had good reason.

fishing user avatarBimbelton reply :

I agree. -- I'd like to think that he had SOME reason for choosing this lure design.

Honestly -- I didn't even know that Bass ate snakes!

Then again, I've been fishing for less than a year and STILL haven't caught anything.  ;)

fishing user avatarRoLo reply :

The result of nearly every study has found the 'plastic worm" to be the most productive bass lure (yes, stick worms are worms too)

Oddly enough, worms are not a common aquatic inhabitant, in fact their appearance in water is rare and accidental.

In my own experience, live snakes are VERY LOW on the list of prefered bass foods.       Go Figure

fishing user avatarBimbelton reply :

Interesting.

I did not know that.

fishing user avatarjustfishin reply :

I kind of agree with you all on the snake thing. Why they hit my big 12" worms I do not know. Maybe it looks like a eel. In my 35+ years of fishing for bass I have only caught one that had about a 18" water snake in its mouth. Who knows. All I know is that they work and I have caught most of my #5 and up green bass on either big worms or a jig. I am not going to fix it if its not broke. ;)

fishing user avatarga_hawghauler reply :

Hey jim does the BPS Tournament worms stay on top of the water pretty good when fished weightless sort of like the zoom trick worm?

fishing user avatarkfx400rob reply :

is there any way to buy just one at a time to try it out before puting $40 into em.

fishing user avatarBimbelton reply :

I had that same question.

I looked all over the website but I couldn't find any option for buying only a couple of them.  It seems that the smallest package I could find was the $40 one.

fishing user avatarjustfishin reply :

Hey Hawghauler,

Yes they do float to a certain extent. I have found that the best thing to do with these 12" worms is to be patient and not be too aggressive with them. Eventually they sink but, very, very, slowly if you do not use any weight. I kind of let them do their own thing after I throw them then just kind of slink them along a little at a time. I have even used as little as a 1/32 or 1/16 wt on them on the flats in two to four feet of water in late spring around those emerging grass patches. If you put say a 1/8-1/4 on them they tend to sit nose down on the bottom most of the worm floating up. Like I said, most guys do not have the patience for these worms. They want numbers. Catching big fish can be a long and tedious process at times but, if you want green bass in the #5 and up range this is one of many excellent techniques to add to your arsenal. I sure have done well with them.

fishing user avatarga_hawghauler reply :

Hey him thanks for the info I am headed down to bps tommorow i believe i will pick some up and give them a try i normally throw a zoom trick worm which i like but i wish i could get them a little longer. again thanks for the info.

fishing user avatarbow3022 reply :

Like im just wondering...Isn't 40 bucks kinda expensive to for 15 snakes. I mean, to calculate it out its bout $2.66 per snake. It says 9 snakes would outlast 39 bags of typical softbaits. Lets just say its 10 snakes and 40 bags of soft baits. 1 to 4 ratio. A bag of bait is around $2.66 give or take alittle depending on where you buy it and brand. But in that bag you have a 10 count of that certain bait? You cast the snake once, and get a snag you're done for $2.66. But if you lose one soft bait, you are losing .266, bout a quarter. I'm not trying to badmouth doug hannah's bait but, it just wouldnt make sense to pay that much for one bait. I know hard baits are more than that, but this is a softbait also, and from a educational guess, it does not take $2.66 to make one of those snakes.

just my 2 cents.

fishing user avatarflyphisher # reply :

Smaller worms probably look more like a large leach or sculpin, maybe even a small sucker.

Rig a 12+ inch worm unweighted and fish it like a swimbait.....I caught a 5 or 6 lb LM years back that spit out the last 10-12 inches of a snake that was 1" to 1.5" in diameter.

I have caught several hawgs with weightless Zoom ole monster worms. Places with good cover and big bass w/ lockjaw. T-rig the worm on a 4/0 or 5/0 ewg hook you can get away with. When rigging worm on hook, rig the hook farther down the body of the worm than usual, so you have about an inch or so of worm up your line. This makes the worm look like a snake swimming over the top of the water while your rod tips up with a slow retrieve. when you get to a fishy looking spot let it fall and swim it back up. Colorwise I like Junebug/red and black shad.

I like using MH spinning gear with 30lb braid for this technique

These big worms also pay off on a c-rig, both deep and shallow.

fishing user avatarjustfishin reply :

You are  certainly welcome Hawghauler. I love those trick worms as well. They are one of my most productive baits. I like to throw them at a lake just up the street from me set up on a Alabama rig. I love those green pumpkin trick worms!!! Good luck on the big worms. I might as well warn you, I get a lot of funny looks when I am trolling to another spot with that big worm hanging on my rod,LOL. I have a feeling that around the last week of April to the first three weeks in May while throwing these 12" worms you will be getting a few 5 or 6 pounders, at least I hope you do. A little hint, I hate the green pumpkin ones ;)

fishing user avatarWhiteMike1018 reply :

I actually would've bought some of the snakes but its $40.00 for the snakes and there is a bunch of other stuff that comes with them. I think Doug would do a lot better if he sold some snakes separately. They do have incredible action and i garuntee they will put fish in the live well.

fishing user avatarlunchbox508 reply :

I looked into the snake lures also but i also didnt want to invest 40$ into something that isnt going to work so i went to walmart and baught some 1$ spinnerbaits(work great where im at in texas) some trick worms, garlic dip for my cousin and a sweet new frog that floats perfectly.I have already caught 3 bass out of our ponds in the grassy areas and am going to try them at the lake today. I am going to stick with these until they stop workin.

fishing user avatarmanny reply :

bimbleton........ you've never caught a fish?????

fishing user avatarBimbelton reply :

never...NEVER.

actually -- let me be a little more descriptive.  There was one time that I used a REALLY small hook, put some bread on it, and caught some of those little fish that hang out around the shore but that's it.

I've been fishing for Bass for almost a year now and I have caught NOTHING.  I don't know if it's the places I'm going, or if it's something I'm doing.

If anyone lives in GA and needs a fishing partner that they can teach some things to let me know.  I'm eager to learn and would love to catch these elusive Bass.
