In light of another thread in this forum about "least favorites" I have been thinking -- is there a lure on the market that just won't catch fish -- I don't mean that you haven't caught fish on it, I mean one that just won't work. Lots of people make fun of things like "the flying lure" or "walking worms" and even chatter baits. But somebody else will swear by them. I guess my question boils down to: is it the lure or is it the fisherman(woman)?
I 've never caught even a cold with Heddon 's Cousin II.
Well that may be true, and the only fish I ever caught with a jerk bait was snagged in the back. I know there are lures that I can't catch 'em on and lures that I use but others can't catch 'em on. But what I am really asking, is there a lure that makes it all the way to market (on the shelf) that just won't catch 'em?
In my experience: Heddon 's Cousin II
I've only had 1 lure dont even remember the name. It had a a string that when you pulled the line would make the tail move. :

The motochug ;D ;D Though i find it emberassing i had one too.
buzzbaits...either i don't fish them enough or am doing something wrong but i never catch anything throwing a buzzbait
Definately the fisherman. I see what you're saying. MFerris just mentioned a buzzbait, and I'll kill on a buzzbait. Its all about the way you work it.

Try fishing them more... Ever tried a black one?

Well, I can lend you one of my Cousin IIs, if you catch something with it you can keep it.
Gulp. Helicopter Lure. Mann's Undulator spinner bait.
I got a rattletrap for free with a case of Valvoline oil. It's red white and blue with a yellow valvoline insignia on it. I'm pretty sure it won't catch a fish. That and the Budweiser Can Fishing Spoon probably won't work too well for you...
berkley bladedancer ive never even had a nibble on it
i will second the helicopter lure, that thing was retarded.
I'll second the buzzbait, I have fished it early in the morning/late in the evening/ and everywhere in between but have never been nibbled. I also have never caught a fish on a chatterbait and i hear the helicopter lure has never caught a fish. Although I do slay with Gulp sometimes
Well i never tried the helicopter, nor most of rolands stuff. In my opinion, his stuff is ment to catch fisherman not fish.
I would concur with the buzzbait, I have caught very few on it. But one of those goof lures that I still have, and use often, is the Banjo minnow.
Ok stop laughing at me....Im telling you guys...I have killed the bass with that dang thing.
and by the way, I actually caught a bass on the budweiser bait....um....course I think that day they would have eaten an anchor!

That is one strange looking bait. What is the purpose of the wire loop on the front?
As for everyone else, I assume you're talking about a specific buzz bait? If not, just where the heck are you fishing the things? I've been catching them on buzzbaits since I started using artificials. Smallies, largemouth, redeyes, spots, bluegill. Heck, I even hooked a carp on one last summer.
Quoteberkley bladedancer ive never even had a nibble on it
Yep same here I bought one when they first came out and that was the last berkley product I have ever bought.
When I read the post, the first thing I thought of was the beer can bait (thanks RecMar8541). I would think if someone could catch a fish with it, they should bite anything ;D
As Ever,
Skillet
Mann's Hardworm has to be number one on my list. These things were hard plastic worms with a jointed tail section and had a small diving lip like a jerk bait. I had about a half dozen of these things and I couldn't catch a cold with either one of them. My tackle box was stolen and I was scared to death that the thief would bring those things back.
Hardbaits. I never catch a thing on hardbaits. I tried a walk the dog lure, crank baits, anything. I always use and always catch fish on softbaits.
Quoteberkley bladedancer ive never even had a nibble on it
I agree.
I fish tubes almost religously for smallies but i have never caught a fish on a crawfish shaped soft bait i know some people do but i can't . I have to admit i to bought the banjo minnow and have to credit it for one tournement win as well during a cold front and nothing else seemed to work but a white nose hooked banjo minnow slayed 15lbs 15oz in 5 fish and has'nt caught a fish since dont know why
Never caught a fish on a zoom trickworm. I have tryed them many times, and can never get a hit on them. I really don't know what im doing wrong :-?.
Jigs. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong but they just don't work for me. Maybe it's because I fish from the bank and not a boat. The other problem I have is I live in Florida and everyone says black and blue is a great color but I haven't caught a single fish on this color.
The Bomber Fat Free Shad. I tried several colors and I never caught a fish on any of them. But on the other hand, I have caught tons of fish on Bomber Model A's.
My nemesis baits are more of a catagory rather than a specific bait. A close friend owned a bait shop up till a few years ago and in that time he would order in all these cool and realistic looking baits like craws, helgermites etc.. If you were to put them on the floor and step back you would swear they were real.
For some strange reason I could not get bit on any of those baits.
The more unrealistic the better for me LOL.
chatterbaits
Thanks for all the replies, but what I thought seems to be comming through -- it ain't the bait, it's the fisherman. We all seem to have certain lures that "don't work for me", but work for somebody else.
Blade Dancer and helicopter lure.
Yep, I'm ashamed to admit it, but I bought the whole helicopter lure kit. That was the last thing I bought endorsed by Roland Martin. Never again.
Cheers,
GK
Haven't seen one positive vote for Berkley bladedancer; agree with that. Has anyone had any luck with this lure?
If a lure isn't popular the manufacture will pull it; maybe that's why we don't see many "worst lures" they get pulled if they don't sell.
If I was going to suggest one that won't work, it would probably be the blade dancer, but I have talked to some locals at a lake near the Berkley headquarters and they do report good results with 'em. The reason I asked the question in the first place was to see if there really is a lure being sold that won't catch fish -- what it seems like is that there are lures that don't work for certain people, but do for others.
Gotta be berkely frezny crankbaits! They even look stupid!
as long as its got a hook on it, someone, somewhere, can catch something on it...
Spinnerbaits. I have caught very few fish on them. I will fish an area with them, and then go back through with a crankbait and wipe up the fish.
I think its half/half. Some baits aren't as effective as others, but confidence has alot to do with it. You can't catch a fish on something if the whole time your thinking it wont work.
I think this has to do alot with Rick Clunn's article on Quantum physics, which has kinda changed the way I am attitude wise on the water.
I never used to catch fish on spinnerbaits until i started fishing windswept shorelines with them and had the best and most exciting fishing i ever had, now that i have confidence in them and they are one of my favorites. As for the frenzy crankbaits try them for topwater they can be a blast thrown around rocks and stumps and just twitched slowly i prefer floating raps but frenzys seem to work good as well.
