Least Versatile Lure? 2024

fishing user avatardeep reply :

What do you think the least versatile lure is? In other words, if there was one lure that would never produce fish unless a very specific set of conditions- including water color and moon phase- is satisfied, what would it be?

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

Probably a walking bait. If they aren't interested in the walk the dog action, then they're pretty much worthless.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Alabama Rig

The Rig is either on or not. I have no idea why it does not produce in warmer months,

but here in the Mid South it's over in May (for bass) and doesn't catch back on until

late October.

I agree with this...

Not only that, but there are many bodies of water where it's unlikely that it will produce at all...Even during the 'right' time of year.

fishing user avatarmartintheduck reply :

Alabama rig for sure. It's either on or totally off.

fishing user avatarBig C reply :

Senko.

fishing user avatarBig C reply :

Ok not really, I'm with the Alabama Rig.

fishing user avatarSenko lover reply :

x2 for topwater.

fishing user avatarJaderose reply :

Topwater.....most fun bait in the world to fish but if they ain't biting on them...forget it

fishing user avatarsmalljaw67 reply :

Alabama rig for sure and just about any topwater bait.

fishing user avatarC0lt reply :

topwater for sure. But I think a hollow body frog is even less versatile than walking baits, in my experience anyways.

The Banjo Minnow

Doug Hannon's Snake

Bill Dance's Dancin Eel

Et al

I don't care the circumstance, don't catch anything but anglers. ;)

fishing user avatarSea Salt reply :

A topwater frog is the least versatile in my book.

fishing user avatarFishTank reply :

A buzz bait.  It does only one thing.

I'm with FishTank - Buzzbait.

Heave it out, reel it back.

Maybe play with the speed a little but that's about it.

This. Unlike most topwaters, you can't change the cadence, only the speed.  With hard body baits you can change both the speed and cadence including dead still.

fishing user avatarMIbassyaker reply :

Another vote for buzzbait.  A walking bait or a hollow-bodied frog can get sometimes get strikes just sitting there doing nothing; buzzbaits won't even sit.  Never used an A-rig.

fishing user avatarprimetime reply :

buzzbait for sure....I can wake a popper, or make a walker a subwalk so I could at least cover the water underneath, but a Buzzbait is never a bait I have had confidence in unless on top....Although I have had a few over many many years grab it while it was close to bottom after an overrun or if not paying attention......I wonder how a buzzbait blade would do in front of a c-rig stirring up bottom like a big craw....Always wanted to try with a plastic one in black and then tie a crawbug behind it a few feet or a smaller drop shot bait like a shrimp or 2" grub and see what happens...

I can't stand all the New Buzzbaits on the market with frogs etc. for crazy money....Craziness nowadays, 8 blades on spinnerbaits, Quad buzzbaits, 90% of all the new tackle coming out is getting bizarre lately. $10 for a buzzbait blade and a frog behind it???

I fished with a guy once who swore by letting a buzzbait settle to the bottom, then cranking it a few times and killing it. He caught several fish doing it that day and had pictures of a 10 pounder he'd caught doing it (nearly unheard of in KS but the picture looked legit). I've also heard people catching fish on buzzbaits cranking them in below the surface like a spinnerbait.

fishing user avatarhoosierbass07 reply :

 Crankbaits.

fishing user avatareinscodek reply :

X2 on the buzzbait..

I've caught too many on top walkers to even think about adding that.. They're not the most versatile but they're not the least for sure
