I am still having a hard time getting myself to pull the trigger on this color. Shoot it’s been 25 years and I still haven’t bought it.
I have Spooks and Puppy’s in a lot of different colors, but still not that one. I’m almost irked by the color.
Does anyone have any good reasons why you would recommend that color? I’m assuming if a Smallmouth or Largemouth is hitting a topwater or Crankbait it is doing so because of sound, and action, and not because it looks like a bass. But then I don’t know much either.
I'm not sure they specifically look at it that "hey that's an injured baby bass should I eat it or not". You know it's all reactionary on the fishes part. But baby bass is pretty productive pattern. The color in soft plastics is right there in the heart of other similar plastic colors that also work well. It's not like it's night and day different than others. In crankbaits I throw that pattern in Rapalas, Cotton, Bomber and Bandit. Was one of the first colors they tell you to get when you were a kid starting to throw crankbaits.
I will say that my more recent purchases of a few real image type crankbaits are no where near as productive as the old school patterns put on Crankbaits. I would have thought the Rapalas real image largemouth and smallmouth pattern would have been far more productive than what they are. I really believed they would kick butt. Might be a mental block I have now with them.
I found this this to be true with the Rapala old school bluegill pattern vs. the real image bluegill. Original bluegill is hands down more productive. One of the best bass fishing patterns there is. Just my opinion.
A little smallmouth barfed this little smallmouth into my boat two days ago. They are cannibals

Because it flat catches fish...????
Only a hundred or two bass caught on this one so far...
Baby bass is the secret killer pattern for ponds.
Its white on the bottom. dark on top, and some blotting and splashing in the middle, what's not to like? I don't know (or care) if they actually think they are doing the Jeffery Dahmer thing or not, they bite it, so I throw it.
Bass are cannibals, they eat anything they can fit into their mouths...including other bass! How many times have we all heard about someone reeling in a 12" bass when a 20" bass strikes it and tries to eat it and the fisherman catches both bass. What about fisheries that don't have lot's of Crappie, Bluegill or Perch...what do you think the bass feed on...yup, you guessed it...other smaller bass!
A Bagleys baby bass with chartreuse belly has been a good pattern for me .
I throw a lot of Bandit cranks mostly in Tenn. Shad but my 2nd best color is Baby Bass. That color has been catching fish for decades.
I have caught bass on Bandit and Bomber crank baits in baby bass color. I have trick worms, super flukes, and swimming flukes in baby bass color and can't get a fish to look at them.

Bout time to change the hook. ???? But seriously folks, if it has a white, light or orange belly, I doubt bass make any distinction before they strike it. Most of the baby bass patterns don't really look like a baby bass. It's just something irritating them.

I have older Bombers and Bandits like that, kick butt on River Smallies.

You might still be able to get the Cotton Cordel Big O in bass. I use to fish the heck out of it in the late '70's and '80's. I still have them. For posterity I'll have to tie one on next time out.
Welp, that does it, I’m going to break down and buy some. Thanks guys!

Sure...but who wants to be an enabler?
It's funny...I have a baby bass swimbait that is still in the package....rather mental....lol
You don't have to break the bank over it. And certainly do not have to go out and buy high dollar crankbaits to be productive.
I'm a bit disappointed with my results with the real image versions. Really thought I'd light the world up with them when I first saw them. I had to have the DT's and Shad Rap versions of the baby largemouth and smallmouths. Has not worked out well. You should still find some of the older vintage classic styles no problem. Bomber recently brought back the vintage Smallie version back. Something to check out. Hope you do better than I if you tie on and real image patterns.
At the few places I fish at, it seems the smaller the body of water the better that color works. One pond I was fishing at night I caught one and it was almost to shore and it just stopped coming in I thought it was stuck and then allot of loud violent splashing about five feet from shore. Then i seen a big wake go the other way and I reeled the fish in. The fish I reeled in was just shy of 3 pounds.
There is no one on this site that is more anal or mental than I am.
Gotta try it. That baby bass in the pop r's is sweet. Been throwing that for years. Rebel has two color variations of that baby bass.
Spend the $3.49 and pick up a pack of the Roboworms in baby bass. If they don't work for you, Ill buy them from you and I'll fish them.

My favorite top water walking lure for numbers of bass is Cultiva Zip N Ziggy in baby bass color.

There’s another post out there that for some of us “Green Pumpkin” is just too plain, blends in, etc to use. But add a white stripe to the Green Pumpkin under belly - now you got something there! Subtle, yet just noticeable enough.

The Excalibur Shad-R BB put a lot of bass in the boat for me years back. I remember when they were discontinued I went to BPS and picked up a bag full for $1 a piece. I should put one back in my crank box.
I've had good success with Zara Spooks in baby bass color. It works well, but at times I'm not sure if the white belly is the real key with this color. Either way it works

I agree with you, I think that white belly deserves a little more credit for its success.
The right presentation and wrong color choice beats out right color but wrong presentation every time. Dont get fixated on color as much as the companies want you to. You dont need a crankbait in every color, u dont need realistic custom painted crankbaits. If the reaction bite is on then its on, pick the color best suited for water clarity and set the hook on em!
I've had enough big bass try to eat little bass while reeling them in to give me reason to fish the color.
First, bass eat bass. I've bought some baby bass colored lures simply because they look like a real fish. I doubt the bass is going to tell the difference between say a bass colored lure and a perch colored lure before they strike it.
Here's a guy fishing for a larger bass with a smaller bass...
And here's a bass trying to eat a bass almost its own size:
????????!!!
Not one of my most productive colors.
The last 3 bass I’ve got have been on gp/b and today green white with black translucent worms . It’s a different color every time I catch though so I don’t know really
Love the Baby Bass color, it flat out works especially in smaller lakes. The 7" Baby Bass Triple Trout has been killer for me.

Always a solid plan to trust your instincts.
May not always work out exactly as planned but when it does . .
It's very satisfying and a great confidence booster.
