A-Jay, KVD said he started the Classic with a 3/8 ounce Strike King spinnerbait and then followed up with his new Strike King 1.5 chartreuse with black back crankbait.
You guys correct me if I am wrong.
I want to read about his new 1.5 crank and the color he used.

I've been using that bait in sexy/chartreuse. Best crankbait I've seen in a while. They talk about the erratic nature of its tracking, that draws the strikes, but its the way it comes through cover that really makes it shine. Around grass, it might be the best I've seen. It seems to track over it, no matter the depth, just glides over it. If you want a bait to bury in it, this ain't the bait for you. I've never seen one walk the grass like this one.

The silent ones are great cranks. What's funny is the whole new lure won the classic : Last year it was the gold sexy shad red eye. This year it is the new RATTLING (soon to be released) kvd 1.5 I really dont know if i will pick any up or not I will stick to the H2O (easier to get my hands on)

anybody else read the ongoing blog each day? took a while to read it all but 1 or 2 of the bloggers talked about the wrist action that KVD was imparting to the cranks. it sounds like a pretty quick, violent snap-snap-wait every so often. by their observations, it was something that he did but wasnt seen being done by the others...I guess it was lesson 1 on being different in the pack!

I think i watched him doing something like that in one of the SK Pro Journal shows. He was ripping those square bills through weeds with wrist snaps and sharp pulls. I love those square bills though. glad i stocked up before he won with em ;D

In this case I would bet it has a lot more to do about KVD then the actual brand of crank he was using. In certain circumstances the specific bait can be a major factor but when its KVD and a crankbait I think the major factor is KVD.

In the press conference, he said that he spent a lot of time with SK getting the 1.5 and 2.5 just right. He wanted a bait that was very erratic and didn't just move in a straight line with a normal wobble.
I remember watching a video with Patrick Sebile (may have been on Tackle Warehouse) where he talked about the engineering of crankbaits and how fluid hydraulics and pressure influenced the way they ran. It's been a while since I've watched it and perhaps that wasn't even where I've heard about the erratic movements.
If memory serves, the thinking was that pressure would build on one side of the bait until it overcame the pressure from the opposite side, which would cause the bait to dart wildly to one side.
As I've spent more and more time fishing crankbaits over the last couple of years, it has become obvious to me that for the most part it is all about the retrieve. Banging into rocks & wood, starting and stopping the retrieve, giving the bait a good jerk to one side occasionally.
Regardless of the engineering and what limited skill I have with a crankbait, it is obvious that VanDam is nothing less than a true master of the reaction bite.

A dying baitfish is one heck of a "trigger". Erratic retrieve with crank is about as close to that as you'll get with it. I've watched him throw cranks too (on tv), and he puts a lot more work into it than most others do and it obviously works.

Trust me it was not the bait...location and technique plain and simple..I was with Boyd today and he was throwing a laser lure square bill, Brandon P was throwing a spro and im not sure what arron martins was throwing but they were all on fish. Boyd caught 90% of his fish today on a chatterbait!

I'm not extremely interested in the lure KVD used. I'm more interested in how he used it. Sometimes, I think he could tie on a block of wood with a hook and a lip and still compete.

Every time I watch Bassmaster episodes with KVD throwing a crankbait he typically has a few LC's tied on. The same goes for all the SK guys when they do or did well in events. Even when Cochran broke 100 pound on a jerkbait on G-Ville a while back he had all Pointers tied on. That tells me a lot about SK cranks. I have thrown Strike King Series 1 and 4S for years and every one out of three or four cranks won't run correctly out of the package.
In this Classic, it was all about the area they were working, not the baits. When the fish would get sick of a lipless, he would go to a crank, sick of the crank spinnerbait, etc. Other guys were mixing it up as well with a variety of baits. Now if you want to go back to the Pittsburgh Classic, that was all about the lure.

If I'm wrong, pile on. I'm admittedly the worst crankbait fisherman I know of. I can count how many crank fish I caught last year on one hand and still have fingers left. Maybe mine run too straight :

Not that I remotely think that KVD's crank made a big difference but I just compared his square bill to a RC and they are almost completely identical. The only thing that I can notice at all is that the bill of KVD's seems to be like 100th of an inch wider at the base where it comes out of the crank.

I agree A-Jay. I know some people hate SK because of tuning issues but if this crank can produce like the RC at a 1/3 of the price then I'll take the time to tune the bait.

Yup - but when I'm purposely bouncing a bait off logs & stumps looking for a reaction bite, I don't expect the bait to "stay tuned" for long - Just stay together.
