Browsing through my local shop last night I noticed that they now carried the Googan line of plastic baits. I've heard a lot of talk about these baits (and this thread is not about your opinion of the guys who run this company), so I picked up a few packs and checked out the baits. They seem well made and nicely packaged. The colors looked good and the shapes of the bait looked great too. However, what turned me away was the $6.99 price tag at my shop. At that price, I'll stick to my Rage Tail and Netbait plastics. So my question for you guys is have any of you guys tried these things yet? How do they work compared to some of the other more established brands out there?
For that price they better be 7/8s as good as yammamotos!????
Interestingly enough, they don't even offer a stickbait style worm.
I've heard a little about them and seen some stuff at Sportsmans Warehouse, but for that $ I'll stick to GYB.
Slight variations on the same basic plastic styles, much like any other brand. I think I read somewhere that they licensed the use of the Rage Tail appendage style, so they will have similar action to RT baits.
The one that looks like a Rage Bug but with 2 extra side-flappers caught my eye as a swing-head or Carolina rig bait...But I've got boxes full of Rage Bugs already.
On TW they are essentially the same price as a pack of Rage Tail baits, not really outrageous IMO...Local stores might up-charge I guess. Regardless of who 'designed' them, they look like baits that would catch fish.
DSG has them as well. Like someone mentioned, not much different than a lot of other things out there, I'm sure they work fine. Am I allowed to use them even if I don't have a social media presence?...

Yes, but you won't get the pro staff discount.

Oh! In that case I'm gonna go find a used GoPro and a selfie stick...
I am going to eventually pick up a pack of their slim shake worms. That's about the only bait they make that looks interesting to me.
I just saw them today at DSG. First they are charging seven bucks for 9 trickworms. Second, they are packaging said trickworms in a plastic clam shell. I kayak past enough floating plastic trash as is and it's not like worms are fragile. Good luck to them for shooting for the high-end market, but I wonder if their core audience has that much to spend.

I sell more high end BMX bikes to 9-14 year olds than many other segments, and since most just want what they want and have no idea (or don't care) about the value of a dollar is, they just plunck it down. The look on parents' faces when they find out how much that rear wheel Johnny wants for Xmas is just priceless...
Googan either licensed Rage Tail patent or a law suit is comming, it hasn't been 17 years since the patent was issued or it was defeated?

I think it’s brilliant on their part. Their core audience is upper middle class pre-teen/teenagers that get what they want.
I was at DSG once when their was apparently a meet and greet with Andrew Flair and it was like a giant middle school prep boy Justin Bieber hair extravaganza.
Whether I like what they are doing or not (and whether their gear and equipment is junk or gold), they have done at excellent job of generating interest in their market and are going to get rich off of it.
The baits remind me of a mix between Yum and Rage Tail.
They have the smoothness and body profile of Yum-type baits and the appendages of Rage Tail.

Along with Favorite rods. I noticed Dick's now carries both as well. No idea how well they work or if they're worth the money or even half of the money you pay for them, but they're showing up everywhere.

I will leave you with this

That's funny. I think Rob wen't off on DSG on Twitter regarding their tactical rifle policy and now they carry his baits.

LOL. There's a fat one? Rob's the older one, the veteran. His YouTube channel is LunkersTV. Some of the Googans are really immature and annoying. There is another guy they associate with called LakeForkGuy that acts mature. He's also a grownup.

You need to elaborate ????????

Yes. Reviews like this one are why. Their marketing is on point. This is likely a teenager, who doesn't care what the cost is.
YouTuber's are the new "rockstars."
I'll probably try the Bandito Bug when I get through my other plastic craws. Some of their stuff I can't stand to watch, but some are outright hilarious, such as:
I can't stand any of them, I will pass.

Is that a knock on LakeForkGuy's cancerous brain tumor removal?
I know a lot of yall may not like the googan guy, but they appeal to the young generations including mine lol

YouTube is what blossomed my addiction to fishing. I can't deny that finding the Googan Squad's video's when having ZERO fishing knowledge, they managed to teach me a lot of good info. Their videos are not how to videos, they are entertainment, however, they throw tips in there. When you know nothing, their care free seemingly laxisdaisicle approach took the intimidation factor out of fishing for me.
Now that I have a knowledge base of my own built, I watch their videos purely for entertainment.
They've managed to put themselves in a great position, like them or not. You can hate their "fishing" but you have to respect their business sense, lol.

Yeah, right.... like THAT wasn't gonna happen and IMMEDIATELY.....????
Not going to knock someone for wanting to make a few bucks. You won’t find me buying their products though.
Dicks does a nice job staying with the trends. Good, bad, and annoying.

They are paying for the rage tail flange license to use on their baits. The patent number they use on their baits is stamped right on the front of the packaging. I'm guessing that wasn't cheap. Probably why their baits are so expensive.

You're absolutely right buddy! And it's the same with me, I did'nt get into fishing till I was 18, and I'm barley gonna be 21 soon. Like I said these guys appeal to the younger crowd as far as the jokes they make, how they handle themselves and stuff of that nature. Like I saw in some other comments in this thread, some of them (won't put out names) are pretty annoying, but hey its worth watching them in the end. Great content and like you said they mix in some greats tips for fishing in there as well.
On a different note, I did order a couple packs of the mondo worm(10 inch) and I absolutley love the action! Only have used it once, did'nt catch anything as I was only out for about 30 minutes, but plan on using it in the future, with a bullet weight.

Not the Dick's nearest to me. It's a good place to go through the clearance because they don't know what to purchase. I call it Fishing Big Lots. You can't count on finding what you need, but there will be something available at a discount. Then, when fall rolls around they cut their fishing department in half. The nearby Academy destroys them. That store is 3X the size of Dick's.
I would be more than willing to try them out, however, I am a high schooler and don’t wanna look like one of the big fans who just buys whatever they say catches fish. So for that reason, unless they become extremely popular among all bass anglers or I get them for free somehow, I probably will never try them out.
These baits will have to really stand out or they will be short-lived, just like internet fame. The price point alone will kill them off unless they are truly game changing, which I really doubt will be the case.
I'm sure the baits will catch fish and I honestly do find some of these YouTube "personalities" entertaining. That said, nothing about these baits makes me think they are any better than what is already on the market, but good for those guys if they can make a few bucks
Just a FYI that I saw some Googan baits at the new Gander the other day in Tyler, TX.
What I saw looked fine to me, just nothing essentially new that I could detect.
Like most of you, I have been down this road, well, quite a few times, and I don't chase new plastics like I used to.
Brad
Scheels, in Overland Park Kansas, has a big display of Googan baits. they must be running a special. nearly all of them are $5.99.
Did not see anything that piqued my interest. I will just stick to the baits I currently use.
I might run out and buy some after my nap...I take really long naps.

This was me. I had dropped fishing for 11 years. I come at it now as an older Millennial at 33 (which is the age of Justin/LFG) and the videos these guys do got me back interested in it. Now, do I find them ridiculous, privileged, and immature a lot of the time? Ab-so-friggin-lutely. But they are often still entertaining and I owe it to them for rekindling this passion in me. Maybe I should start sending them my credit card bills for all the gear I have been buying!
As for the plastics themselves, I saw them at DSG recently and picked up a couple of packs of Bandito Bugs (blue craw and green pumpkin) and a package of Slim Shakes (green pumpkin, only color they had). They didn't have any Drag n' Drops, which is really what I wanted to try along with the Bug. I had just told myself "no more plastics!" recently, too. There goes that. These are the only ones other than Rage Tails and stuff from a couple of local pourers that I have, though. I just have a lot of all of that.
Couldn't agree more!
I used to watch these guys when I first got really really into fishing. Over time they wore on me though, just got more and more annoying. Other than LFG I can’t stand to watch them anymore and they hardly do “fishing” videos anymore anyways. By the way I’m 32, so probably the older side of their target demo.
The baits look ok. They kind of seem like they’re just an extension of the Rage Tail line with the tail flanges and the clam shell packs. However some of the shapes are interesting, I’d like to try the bandito bug and maybe the brush hog type one, and the worms but I’ll try any new worm you show me ????.
The thing that intrigues me about the whole deal is how did Scott Martin factor into the equation? He is a partner in the baits too. I know they’ve all collaborated on videos and stuff from time to time, but that really always seemed like Scott was paying them to do it when he was first getting his YouTube channel off the ground. I wonder if they just needed ol Uncle Scott to put up some money, or if he knew the right people to get it off the ground or what? Just seems like an odd pairing for partners in a company, you have these 5 kids and then Scott. Bravo to him though, if nothing else that man is a brilliant businessman. He’ll probably see a sizable return on his investment, whatever that was. These guys have way too many fans who are young and have disposable income for them not to sell a ton of baits. I mean their first 2-3 drops of baits sold out in the first 20 minutes for crying out loud.
