If you were buying or changing the hooks on your crankbait or jerkbait which of these two hooks would you prefer and why?
ST 36.
Straight points, plenty strong enough even in the smaller sizes.
I think you'll be fine with the 36 on regular cranks/jerks. I've upgraded some of my larger swimbaits to the St-56. Never used the 41's though. I actually just ordered a lot of trebles for my cranks and jerks but decided to go with Mustad KVD's instead. Purely off price point and I've used them before so I have confidence in them as well.
The St 36 is my choice unless I want a heaver hook for larger fish than bass like pike, musky or lake trout. I just started trying the mustad KVD's like MarkH mentioned & they have worked well. A-Jay swears by them. The gammy EWG work well too.
All my cranks are st41 1/0. I have tried lately gammy short shank ewg magic eyes in the same size and I have lost more fish than with the owners. This is just my experience though.
Also a fan of st 36
I'm a big fan of the 41's personally, although the 36's are really nice hooks as well. I think it would depend on what type bait I was changing the hooks on, say a jerkbait I'd more than likely stick with 36's because changing hooks on these lures alters their "suspendability". Now with square bills I always go 41's, this is a technique where you're mostly using heavier line and fishing around cover so I like the added advantage of the 2X 41.

I've been having this very same thing happen to me. The hooks are deadly sharp and high quality but for some reason fish just keep coming unbuttoned. I think it has something to do with the gap being opened up more than the KVD EWG style hooks. I never have problems hooking or keeping fish hooked on the KVD trebles.
Personally never tried either, but im going to get some 36s to try. Right now i find the KVD 1x2x to be working out well for me.
36 are great. Been using Gammy magic eye short shank with great success. Both are inline, which I prefer, sharp as heck, but Gammys are a much better value and they work.
Thanks guys!! I'm taking a poll on a future product.

I'd pretty much echo what Dwight said.

Mike is such a nice guy he might just do that.

This is true. Solid dude!
Are y'all using the ewg or round ben style of KVD's?

I was talking about the ewg style KVD's

I use the ewg short shanks in the KVD. I have other brands that I prefer for round bend hooks.
OK Cool. Just got these KVD in #2 #4 #6. Should keep me busy changing over.
Uuuhhhh... the two's are definitely Mustads but the 4's & 6's don't have the same point as I'm used to seeing on my KVD trebles.
Hmmm. Curious what you are seeing that is different?
Thanks

I agree. Mustad Triple Grips should have needle points, like the size 2 in your pic. Notice how the 6 and 4 have flat sides toward the point? That isn't the way Mustad sharpens their hooks.
Well after looking at all three sizes under a magnifying glass, none of the points are cone shaped.
So I definitely do not have Mustad KVD's? Just want to be sure when I confront the seller.
Thanks..
I bought a bait off of ebay a few weeks ago that the seller said had KVD trebles. They looked exactly like regular KVD's but they had the same points as the one's pictured. I honestly don't know what to think. What I do know is all the KVD Triple Grips I have ever bought have needle points with no flat edges.
In my opinion the # 2's are real Mustad hooks, the other two I'm not so sure about. Mustad KVD trebles have what Mustad refers to as "Ultra Point" technology hook points which look nothing like the points on the 4's and 6's. Try doing a search for Mustad KVD trebles and have a look at their points, I've never seen any with the points like your hooks. Good luck getting this sorted out.
CN- What was the outcome of this? I ordered in some KVD Trebles too and didn't review mine to see if I had the same issue. I got some round bends and EWG's but not in every size of each style. Mine were purchased at Tackle Warehouse during the Veterans day sales.
OK so I got these hooks from Lurecraft who is a pretty legitamate place. They assured me they are genuine Mustad KVD hooks. So I dont know what to do now. Maybe an older model?

You should be fine because they are in a Mustad package.
Mine were bulk in an unlabled bag.

I'm glad you were able to get everything figured out. I hope you like the hooks as I've had very good luck using them. I'll also add though that if indeed Mustad is going away from the "Ultra Point" on these then I'll stop using them altogether. I HATE when companies cheapen a good product just so they can make a bigger profit but try to convince consumers that the new version is just as good or better. I'm perfectly capable of deciding for myself.
Another good example of this is the Shimano Curado G.
I see on Mustads website they call it
"Opti-Angle Needle Point" and not "Ultra Point"
Still kinda confused LOL

Wow, so they must be changing the points. I won't buy them anymore if they don't offer the Ultra Point. Gamakatsu makes great short shank hooks and Owners 36's are great too.

Looks that way. As I said before I just don't understand making changes to a proven product that no one is actually calling for.

I've got a package somewhere that has the "Ultra Point" printing on it, I'll try and get a pic if I can find them.
I have some Gamma Magic Eyes that are very sharp.
"Like all UltraPoint® hooks, they feature Mustad’s 4.3 Micro Sharp Point Technology for a sleek, slimmer, incredibly sharp point. This unique, two-stage opti-angle point has less metal removed in the sharpening process than with traditional methods, providing all the benefits of a true needle point with incredible strength and durability. Chemically sharpened and Nor-Tempered to be up to 30% stronger than conventional hooks, UltraPoint® is a very sharp, very strong needle point that delivers quick, easy penetrations…and longer performance."
So I guess an "Ultra Point" is a "Opti-angle Point"
I think I will return what I got and buy what I know are real Mustad KVD Elite Triple grips.

No, the Ultra Point isn't opti-angle, it's completely round.
I emailed Mustad to see if they could help me.
Sent an email to Mustad. This is the reply.
"We have two point technologies and this is genuine Mustad hooks FYI".
That's weird, I will be paying close attention when I buy Mustad hooks from now on. Thanks for doing the leg work CM.
