Frog Lure Confusion 2024

fishing user avatarike8120 reply :

Now that I have my new rod(Dobyns 735C),new reel (Diawa Fuego CT 8.1:1), and line 50# braid. The one thing I am missing are the frog lures. The selection of frog lures seem to unlimited. Looking to get a (for no better terms a starter set). My wish list has grown extensively and so has my confusion as to what I really need also the cost has grown.

fishing user avatarCroakHunter reply :

For all around frogs it is hard to beat the booyah pad crasher. Both the regular and popping versions. I also like the jackall kaera frog for pressured areas or when they want a smaller more compact bait. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the spro king daddy is a giant frog that can get some giant blow ups. Its big and heavy and works well in heavy mats. Spro bronzeye is another solid frog.  I only throw 3 colors of frogs. Black, natural, and white. And i only care about what color the belly is not the top. The fish isnt going to be looking at the top of the frog anyways.

And dont forget to pick up some toads and some plopping style frogs with the swimbait tail attatched.

Pad crasher.

Buy 6. On sale and or with a discount coupon/code, and they'll be like $4 each.

fishing user avatarburrows reply :

KVD sexy frog easily obtainable at Walmart and they work. Pad crashers can’t be beat at the price!

fishing user avatarBigAngus752 reply :

@CroakHunter fixed you up perfectly.  Pad Crasher or Bronzeye.  Get a couple dark bellies, couple light bellies, couple paddle tail (NOT a Toadrunner) or make your own paddle tails, couple popping frogs (light/dark bellies) and you're done.  All my frogs fit in a single 3700 (except spares) and I fish a frog for at least a little while every single time I go fishing.  You'll almost never lose a frog.  You will have to replace them after the bass tear them up, but it's a freak accident to lose one by snagging it (although I did it once this year in a high wind 20ft up into a tree ????).

fishing user avatarratherbfishin1 reply :

If it’s says booyah you can’t go wrong

fishing user avatarthe reel ess reply :

Buy 2 Pad Crashers and 2 popping Pad Crashers. When they're  biting them, you'll wear one out.

fishing user avatarDens228 reply :

You can get a Pad Crasher Kit, 3 frogs for $12.99 at TW, 3 different versions of it to give you some variety.

We keep forgetting about the little 'ol Scum frog.

Better hook up ratio than any of them.

fishing user avatarfrogflogger reply :

Embarrassingly I have way too many frogs from my Florida days - but the ones that I always try are a spro popping frog, any of the regular frogs (usually Bobby's perfect) and if it is breezy to windy I always throw a furbit which has accounted for more over 7# than any other. Black and white are really the only colors you need but you know some of them are so pretty.

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

For a "starter kit" I would recommend:

2 Spro Bronze Eye 65's...one in "natural green" and one in "rain forest black"

2 Spro Bronze Eye 60 Popping Frogs in the same colors

2 Teckel Sprinkers...one in "camo" the other in "black"

And 2 packs of Keitech Noisy Flappers soft plastic frogs....one in black, one in green pumpkin/white belly. 5/0 Super line EWG hooks work well with this frog.

You beat me to it. The hook-up ratio on these are GREAT. A black Scum Frog was responsible for the majority of my frog fish this year, and I throw the other brands too.

The Pro Series is the best of the Scum Frogs. They also come with a rattle on the inside.

The popping Pad Crasher is about the only frog I fish. I did catch quite a few on a Toadrunner this year too though.

fishing user avataranderb54 reply :

The Pad Crasher in Ole Smokey has caught more fish for me than any other frog... love that color.

fishing user avatarNittyGrittyBoy reply :

I'm spro all the way.

1 regular black

1 Poppin black

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Lots of choices and I wouldn't go overboard and buy only 2 to start with.

I use Snag Proof Phat frogs because they don't fill with water, very durable with good hooks. Colors are not that important, brown/green and pearl white cover what you need to catch bass everywhere.

I was adding to my wish list as the suggestions were being posted , Bam a 100 plus bucks added up in no time. Thanks for the advise.

fishing user avatarNittyGrittyBoy reply :

I'm fish with only those 2 I mentioned, I have 2 of each

That's all I've ever needed, and Poppin frog is main frog I throw, always been a producer for me.

My mother in law caught a 10lb bass on black spro frog, zebco 33, 8lb mono, and never set the hook. Fish hooked itself, and stripped drag for 5mins. She had it mounted!

Teriminator makes a good frog, easy to walk

fishing user avatarSmalls reply :

Don’t overthink the frog. Some probably hold up better than others, but I haven’t noticed much of a difference. Other than that, they all do exactly the same thing.

I wish they would stop making 45 different colors with the exact same colored belly, which is the only thing they matters ????

fishing user avatar12poundbass reply :

I think the best frog lure are flies. I think your set up might be a little overkill catching frogs though. ????

fishing user avatarJaderose reply :

Scum Frog Trophy Series 5/8 Natural Black and Green.  Learn it, know it, live it.  Don't trim the legs or bend out the hooks.  Tie it on, give it a high arc cast and let it PLOP right in the middle of that muck mat.  Let it sit a bit and then start twitching it in.  You can Sharpie an Orange stripe down the belly if you want.  Also the eyes will come off.  It doesn't matter.

fishing user avatarDr. Watson reply :

I really love my Lunkerhunt frogs, mainly the pocket frog, lunker frog, and combat frog. I also really like my Kopper's live Target frogs.

I do have a SPRO popping frog that works well too.

If you take a look at the Lunkerhunt stuff, they do have a starter set that has a little of everything from them.

fishing user avatarike8120 reply :

I got bit by the "Bait Monkey" and got a few different lures based on everyone's suggestions. I waited till BF and ordered from TW 20% off and Dicks 25% off with free shipping. It will be a few months before I can report back what worked for me.

Thanks

Hey they work man, bought a bunch of them this spring for my boys to throw and I’ve used them a couple times too when they want to use the same thing dads using. They’ll catch em. Hooks aren’t terrible either

fishing user avatarsnel6424 reply :

Regarding colors, when do you use what color?

fishing user avatarike8120 reply :

What I was told with frogs the color doesn't really matter, the fish only sees the belly and the action. From all the good suggestions posted here white, black and natural seem to be the choices. But since I am not an expert we can let them chime in.

Have you ever tried the Popper version?  Wondering if it’s as effective popping as the Poppin Pad Crasher ... and if the hook up ratio is as good as the original Scum Frog?

I have. I do like the chugger better than the popper though. Both have very good hookup ratios. The chugger casts better as well and easier to walk the dog with.

I guess nobody really knows if the color matters. But I'll share a story about a day I had this year where it seemed like color did matter.

My friend and I were fishing a huge grass mat. It was a bright, blue bird day, for the most part. I've always read, fish white frogs on sunny days and black on cloudy days. So we both had a white frog tied on. We weren't doing the greatest. In an hour, I had one bass, he had two.

Then I noticed the "popping" sound of bluegill feeding on surface (bottom of the mat...embarrassed I hadn't noticed it sooner).

Well, bluegill get REALLY dark when they're living under those mats, being out of the sun. So I put on a solid black frog. The difference was night and day. There were openings here and there in this mat. And the majority of the fish I caught in the next hour came when that frog hit the open hole.

Now, did the bass think the frog was now a bluegill feeding on the surface? Is that why they were feeding all of a sudden? I'm not sure. But I did catch 9 bass in the next hour, all on that black Scum Frog. My friend stuck with white and caught 1 more in that hour.

fishing user avatarscbassin reply :

The contrast made the darker frog easier to see.

fishing user avatarscbassin reply :

My 2 favorites are 3:16 No Bullfrog, & the Boze Sumo Frog, I don't think these are in production any longer, at least I can't find them. I do have several still but am thinking of picking up a few of Bobby's perfect frog to check them out. Catt suggested Academy frogs are as good as any so I'll pick up a couple of them in the Spring when I go to Columbia  to watch my grandson play high school baseball.

The No Bullfrog will catch all size bass, it will surprise you. This frog provides a large profile that is easy to see. I fish it with a 6 power rod, it will get the big girls out of the slop.
