Tried a hollow body on top this morning. Tried a 3/8 black n blue football jig with a craw trailer, even skimmed a buzz bait on top. Nothing doing. I went elsewhere to catch fish but walked back through here and saw a largemouth that looked to be at least 5 or 6 pounds sitting in one of the openings. Also saw a carp about as long as my leg lol.
What would you throw in this? What is this? Milfoil? I don't know my aquatic vegetation from a rose bush.
LC
Berkeley grass pig on a gamakatsu 1/8oz keel weighted spring lock hook. Swim it over and through the vegetation just under the surface and on top of it. Straight slow and steady. Can also let if fall when it opens up. Deadly bait, one of my favorites.
I would be throwing: a texas rigged worm to swim, the Rage Cut'R worm would be my first choice, a buzz frog, hollow belly frog, swimbait, and a Rage Craw. All unweighted or with a weighted hook.
pitch a texas rigged craw in there
I would say something T-Rigged as well. Specifics can be up to you.
Water looks pretty clear. Id throw a GP swim jig and rip it through there.
Weightless Yum Swurm will go right over the top of that slop . Use a big hook for added casting weight and the strength to pull in a six lb bass and several lbs of dead weight . I would use 15 lb Big Game there , done it lots of times in places far worse . .
Cool. So is this milfoil?
I have some Rage Craws in a couple of different colors, as well as some weighted EWG hooks. I just left academy with some grass pigs, a gp swim jig, and some juicy worms. They didn't have any cut Rs.
LC
Black texas rigged weightless Lizard...
Black and red magnum lizard or a tennesse shad fluke
Want to throw something that very few people use let alone own??
Try a Trixie Shark by RI.... It will go over, under and threw that stuff, which is what I'd want, kicking up a fuss as it goes which is what you want.
Mike
Frog & Trick Worm, weightless. I might also try the wacky rig in openings.
It's a no-go. The bass are shut down. I wiggled several things right in front of their nose. All they're doing is staring at it, locked in position, or they'll run from it. Couldn't even get any reaction strikes. Maybe next time. They did just spawn within the last week. Maybe too tired. Not sure.
LC
Next time try a strike king caffeine shad weightless t-rigged(not the swimming ones) . And twitch it through there.

Was fortunate to get out today for a spell of fishing.
Faced similar spots and like your experience, the bass
were completely shut down. I ended up catching one
chain pickerel 26" long and 2+ pounds by a laydown on
a gp gold Trick Worm drop shot.
Only fish, heck, only bite I had today. I did see a couple
bass protecting spawned fry, but coupled with the wind,
I couldn't convince any to bite. C'est la vie. Another day.
Looks like the northern milfoil that grows in the lake I fish a lot. I fish weeds like that with a big jig with a large trailer. The point is to stand out. You don't want your bait to get hung up in all those weeds. Under those weeds, closer to the bottom is where the stems are and that area tends to be more open. Find the thickest part of those weeds and start flipping like crazy.
try a senko, rigged like you would a texas rig, but with no weight. "swim" it over the top and let it fall down into some of those pockets.
First off welcome to grass fishing. IT ALL LOOKS GOOD right? Well you need to find the cuts, points, holes, edges, anything that looks different in the big flat of grass. I'd fish a punch weight and find the thickest stuff and fish it in the middle of that spot. Lots of pitches. I'd fish one with a straight creature/beaver bait and another with a punch skirt. Also sunny skies will help, they tend to look for the thicker parts of the grass beds. So get some straight braid, a 3/4-1.5oz punch wieght, a SK Structure bug, 4/0-5/0 flipping hook and go punching. When the grass gets like that around here it frustrates people, they fish all the above ideas, I go heavy and go get them.

The jig I was throwing was on straight braid 50lb powerpro, on a 7' Berkley Lightning Rod shock with a Lews Tournament MG in 6:1. I wasn't necessarily getting hung up, but I was dragging gobs of this stuff back with me to the bank. The jig was a 3/8 ounce and I didn't have anything heavier in that color.
Is there a trick to fishing grass? It didn't feel like the jig was getting much action while in the grass and when I pulled it through it was covered. I normally do a hop-hop and let it fall but don't think that was doing much besides collecting more weeds.
LC
Is it clean, grassy weeds or is it slimy algae mucky stuff? That makes a difference. A pond I fish very regularly gets choked up with slimy algae growth 10 months out of the year. It's horrible stuff. You can't fish a bottom lure at all pretty much. The one advantage is I get a lot of dropshot practise, lol.

It comes out clean. Not slimy at all. That algae stuff is in this lake but in a different area.

Grass fishing is getting your lure covered in grass. Its gonna happen. Aim for the openings in the grass and let it drop. Watch your line. If the line doesn't drop very far a bass may have grabbed your jig. Grass fishing with a jig is slow and messy but trust me when I say you can pull some big bass out of grass. If you think you are not hitting bottom use a heavier jig and try to keep any trailer slim so it won't hang up.
Unweighted super fluke
I think having more than one Rod set up here is really helpful. A rod rigged to throw heavy jigs with craw trailers(1/2 oz and up) and big T-rigs and another set to throw finesse baits on braid with a flourocarbon leader. On the heavy/MH rod, consider adding rattles. In the thick stuff or dark water, noise can really help fish find your bait. On the finesse rod, you'd be shocked at what 20lb braid and a 10lb Yozuri hybrid leader will pull fish through.
Looks like some of the lakes that I fish. Really a pain trying to keep the prop clear. I usually throw a t-rig that is low profile, a topwater bait, or a Zoom fluke. I would also try a 1/8 jig. The jig will hang up but the small size lets you pop it free without dragging in a salad.

The trick especially off the bank is to try to stay as vertical as possible. Flip & pitch; DO NOT CAST!
Do not force you jig through the grass, finesse it through the grass.
As for weight ya gonna have play it by ear & adjust the weight enough to maintain bottom contact.
Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I know there are some big bass lurking in this slop. The road is about 10-12 feet higher than the water and walking down the road looking into the water revealed alot of fish hiding in there. Harder to see right at the bank but I remembered where they were.
Definitely was pitching the jig for the most part. I did make a few casts to the edge of the weed lines and dragged the jig parallel to the weeds. Several anglers in the area have mentioned that the top water bite should "turn on" around here soon. I'm gonna keep pitching this stuff but can't wait to drag in some frog fish out of here!

This is good advice. I'll remember that for when I'm fishing weeds next.
My favorite way to fish! TX rigged Jelly Worms with red hooks, rattle jig and craw, weedless whacky rigs...
Thompson silver spoon. I actually like a white Zoom trick worm for a follower.
Picture this in your minds eye!
Ya ever seen a snake going through tall grass or weeds?
It doesn't bull its way through, it slithers its way through!
Y'all want you jig & t-rig to do the same!
I fish a big flat that looks just like this
Buzz frog / buzz bait in morning or when sun goes down
1/4 oz Tom monsoor swim jig
weightless super fluke
weightless senko fished just like a fluke
RI skinny dipper w/ weighted hook
Texas rig cut-r worm 1/8 pegged weight

#1, when you get hung up in grass, fish heavier weight. I don't use a jig, I use punch skirts and a tungsten weight pegged or us a punch jig which is just a tungsten weight with the skirt attached. Look at Siebert Jigs website, he has really nice punch jigs and will wire them as well which keeps the skirt attached better. Now, you fish a heavier bait for two reasons. #1 it falls faster and thru that stuff without hanging up. #2, it actually comes through the grass cleaner since it's heavier. You're NOT casting and working it back like a worm. You're pitching it into likely spots, jigging it a few times, and winding it in and making another pitch. Yes some do use regular flipping jigs for grass, but if you look at the ones that do...IE Greg Hackney, he fishes a 1-1.5oz heavy cover jig as so it falls through that stuff and doesn't hang up. Look up grass fishing on the articles and it will give you some good insight. Once you learn how to fish grass effectively your success rate will climb when others who struggle will fall. Lots of people frog and throw weightless baits in the grass, but not everyone wants to make 100's of pitches with a 1oz flipping weight into pockets over and over. My average punch fish is somewhere around 3lbs. Get lots of 4's as most flylined baits fished in the grass fish where I'm at average about a pound.
If you can not fish a jig cleanly through grass ya can't fish a jig period!
a couple small lakes by me look just like that, if not worse. Tried a bunch of stuff, always came back with weeds tangled up around.
Can be irritating...
Bluegill swimjig
What I've had success with in stuff like that is an un-weighted Rage Bug.
Just pull it over the grass and slowly crawl it on top of that water like a wake bait.
Unlike Catt, if I get hung on grass, I rip it. This seems to get attention from bass.
Josh
This looks like more than grass to me . It appears to have slimy snot moss in it .

Bingo! Heavy jig = reaction bite.
