My name is Josh and I'm a lure addict.
OK, so maybe not. I like to have a selection.
Throughout my life, I've had ever-larger tackle boxes. I now have three of them. Two were given to me by grandpa, with one being a super-organized live bait dedicated box that he inherited from a friend. I will not ever want for hooks again if I live to be 100.
My lures are mostly contained in one of those big FLW boxes. It's overflowing. I also have a shoulder bag that's also overflowing.
It seems that each lure I have, I have to have two different sizes of that lure, with every color variation that I can get.
There are lures in there I justify owning because I once caught bass on each of them. Maybe it was five years ago and the bass was 10". It doesn't matter; it stays!
Am I alone in this type of thing? This tackle box weighs as much as a car battery... And I consider a light load for walking around a lake to be three or four rods (MH or two MH, M, and UL) and that heavy shoulder bag.
I take the boat out, I'm loaded down even more.
Anyone else?
Josh
If I had boatloads of money I would have boatloads of lures.
But I'm not rich so I only have enough tackle to fill up a tackle box I got from academy.
Lets just say I need more storage for what I have.....I have gottern rid of the bait monkey, but then found this bait gorilla that I adopted. Are we counting the lures we have, or the ones on order I haven't recieved as well as the pre-order baits that haven't arrived yet but already have an order for also?
I have enough soft plastics and topwater to start a business
I have no idea, it would be a project to count them .
There is no solution, get a bigger bag or bigger boat and you inherent the same problem, you stuff more in.
It's a never ending process
It is all just part of the program.....
I have 2 cardboard boxes from TW that are full of plastics. I have a big Plano tacklebox that has more plastics, spinnerbaits, and 2 3700s filled with crankbaits. My tacklebag has more stuff in it too. Between Mystery Tackle Box and my relentless need to order more stuff, I will have more baits than I can use. Stocking stuffers are a plenty though.
Hi! I'm Tom and I'm a lureaholic. It would probably take me a week to count them, and that;s just the crankbaits. Suffice it to say, the total number would be in the thousands.
Tom
I suppose it's getting bad whenever you have a box for:
Squarebills
Jerkbaits
DT4-6's
DT 10-16's
Shad Raps and assorted crankbaits
1/4oz lipless cranks
1/2oz lipless cranks
Musky/Striper lures
Sinkers
Hooks
2 Topwater boxes
Spinnerbait box
Buzzbait box
Jig box
And then a bag full of about 50 plastics...
No, you're organized.....it's only a problem when your friends come over and want to shop through your collection because the local tacklestores don't have the same selection you do.
It would be easier to list the baits we don't have
I have at LEAST one individual box for each specific type of lure and I have multiple shoulder bags full of soft plastics. It never ends. The more you learn the more you need that you didn't know you needed! BAIT MONKEY!
Hi, I'm David and I'm a lureaholic.
I have an embarrassing amount of tackle. Like. ... 6 Tupperware totes full to capacity that I haven't used in 5 years. Plus my everyday load out, plus my kayak specific stuff, plus the small bag in my jeep, and then there's the stack of season specific boxes that I rotate into my everyday load out. I'm pushing 20 something bass rods.
I'm not even counting my inshore/ saltwater stuff.
I have a problem .
I told the Mrs I need to have a yardsale or open a flea market booth to sell some of this great bass stuff that our local stores don't have.
She said that'd be great because then I could spend that money on NEW tackle.
She smiled dryly.
She gets me.
Well we all know that what we have is never enough!
Hi, I'm Chris and I have spent more money on lures than on my car
i'm actually to the point of realization that i had so many un-fished lures i needed to get rid of some. i've been "purging" lately, but really only freeing up more room and funds for the things i'm really using right now (siebert jigs, trailers for said jigs)
but every time i go to walmart, dick's, bass pro, cabela's, whatever it is at least one lure seems to make its way into the bag and into the car.....
Also, I´m really too lazy to actually count them, I ceased counting crankbaits when I got to 600, spinnerbaits when I reached 100 and soft plastics when I stopped counting bags and started by pounds,
An example:
More than enough, however.....
Its still not enough. The bait monkey has ahold of my brain. I keep telling myself to stop buying because I have plenty and its not even winter yet.
But still every week I find myself receiving at least one new box filled with tackle. I have a problem.
Let me state that the first step is recognizing that there is a problem! I have been slowly culling tackle into bins to get rid of over the winter.
That being said I have 66quart tubs from Wal-Mart sitting on a wooden pallet in my basement full of lures. There is no way I will ever use 20% of this stuff so it will be sold over this winter. Terminal tackle, line, and maybe some flick shake worms is all I plan on buying in the next 12 months.

I've seen it and he's not kidding. LOL

The only "problem" is having enough room to store all the stuff.
I get overwhelmed by having too many types of lures I don't know how to use, and I don't have too much money to drop on lures.
Crankbaits/lipless crankbaits: 8-10 total
Jigs-10 total
Jerkbaits: 5 suspending, 4 rapala countdown
Topwater: 12-14
Terminal: one 3600 3/4 full
Soft plastics: I have a big bin full. Probably between 40 and 60 bags of all sorts
I'm definitely still building my tackle collection, but I feel like right now I am limited more by my knowledge than my lack of lures, so I feel pretty good where I am now. I buy lures 2 or 3 at a time, based on what I think will be working on my next trip.

BTW, these are spares, and got another 5 boxes more like those at my business.
Oh gosh, I'm a sucker for NIB Rapalas.
Zoiks....I must be the only one here who is able to fight off this, bait monkey, and keep him at bay. I probably only have between 40-50 baits TOTAL, and even then, I am at the point of needing to purge my collection. Im no longer interested in trying this, and trying that. Time to reduce my small collection even further to include only those baits and rigs that work best. Simplification is a virtue.
(I currently have 28 bags of soft plastics for sale, posted on the flea market)
I am a shore angler, and just started fishing again late last summer, after not having fished for about 18 years. So I entered into this new venture with a few points of understanding..
> Im on foot, so pack light. No need to take anything that wont fit in my knapsack. The fish will always be there.
> Baits are made catch fisherman, moreso than fish
> What baits work? all of them do.
> My collection of which baits works best, will already be limited by the shorelines in which I fish in.
> Dont go chasing colors. If the fish are not liking the colors Im using that day - they will like them another day.
> Its not the bait that catches the fish - its the fisherman.
> Learn the fish first - then learn TO fish
> I only get to fish for about 2-3 hours at a time. Not enough time to warrant a giant bait collection.
> My goal for fishing is to obtain the ability to assess the conditions of the day, and then be able reach into my knapsack, and pull out, the right bait to use.
> If I didnt catch anything, then either I was doing it wrong, or the fish were not there. It was no fault of the bait.
> Catching more fish comes with gaining more knowledge and experience - not from buying more stuff.
> Your mind is a better tacklebox,
This mindset has served me well to keep the bait monkey away, without any loss of fish, or enjoyment.
But thats just me.
Sorry, didnt mean to write so much crap.
I'm beginning to understand why alcoholics go to bars-to find people that are even bigger drunks than they are. Thanks, fellas! I feel better now.
I think it's more of an ebb and flow for me. I get into something, I stock up on the baits of that flavor that intrigue me, I use it all and get rid of everything but my favorites and reinvest that cash into stocking up on variants of said favorites.
Then I pick up another niche bait, fall in love with making it work and getting good at it and the cycle repeats itself.
It's a vicious cycle but I love it.
As long as I live I will still never have as much as the old ladies shoes and handbags....
I have more than I need and not enough of all that I want.
I have more then enough and have and still give stuff away. I have never been one to also need 9 colors of the same exact crankbait. I am not very interested in "normal" lures anymore really. I have more then enough of those and I know what works. Anything new I get now usually costs a bunch so it is not a bag or box full of stuff at a time. Not being able to find a lure or being on some kind of list along with the price tag also slows down to process.
Nobody said you should "fight" it, buying lures is as fun as fishing with them, different kind of fun, but still, very fun.On 9/12/2014 at 4:35 AM, Heron said:Zoiks....I must be the only one here who is able to fight off this, bait monkey, and keep him at bay. Haha....True indeed. But, be it as it may....I have a strong preference to not have an enormous amount of stuff.
Let's just say if I put all of my soft plastics on a pontoon boat, well, it would sink.
Well, if anyone wants more stuff.....I have 28 bags that I want to get rid of. Let me know if youre interested.

My wife just said we're all sick.
These kind of threads are a reminder of how bad the addiction is. To put it into perspective. This summer I picked up some more cranks. just for good measure. Just over 200 of them. Like 5 large 2 sided Plano guide series boxes full. It's a sickness. Which reminds me. I need to pick up some more soft baits.

Like I posted earlier admitting there is a problem is the first step. Personally I have loved bass fishing since I was about 12? I use to watch Bassmasters with Bob Cobb as a youth and dream about catching the big ones like I saw on TV. As an adult I still remember those shows and what worked back then that I could not find or afford to buy. Now I have a 6 figure income so I can buy whatever the hell I want but still remember the nostalgia of the late 80's early 90's baits.ad as My weakness for about 5 year was jerkbaits and it didn't matter what they cost as long they looked good I bought 5 of them. Now I have matured as an angler and realize that I don't need to carry $2000 worth of baits that weigh 300lbs I catch more fish. With a family I now and me being back in graduate school I do not have the time I once had to fish. So with that said I am still looking for baits that I had as a teenager that I would like to have again. I will post a WTB in the classifieds and if anyone has any of these lures I will pay top dollar or trade for them.

542. every crank, jig, spinnerbait, bag of plastic, etc accounted for. thanks excel.
Women aren't exactly the best judges, closets and drawers full of junk nobody like them needs, all those rags they never wear, purses that either can't hold a cell phone or big enough to carry a corpse in it, shoes n' that kind of trash, we sick ? I still don't see what's the "problem". I'm not in denial, I'm perfectly aware that I like to purchase tackle, the only real problem is having enough room to store it, dunno, maybe add another room to the house or something like that .......BIG room, for future purchases ya know.On 9/12/2014 at 10:16 AM, Munkin said:Like I posted earlier admitting there is a problem is the first step. My wife has the purse monkey baaaddd.... I mean the $300 kind.. Big enuff to pack for a week in Paris ..... But she will throw a fit on a $300 reel purchase.... A man can't win, first the bait monkey now the purse monkey.... Iam sick of monkeys..
Time to watch King Kong....
Trust me, I've got plenty. I have enough to fill all the storage in 2 20' bass boats and still have several large containers full of boxes of baits in the garage. Heck, I'm waiting on 30 new 10xds to come in the mail from cabelas now!
With the exception of a good bucktail and spoon inventory I don't have a lot. I buy when I need something for fill in, other than that I hate going in a tackle shop. Some how I manage to catch and fish now and then.
Didn't count, but my hard baits probably number in the few hundreds. Soft plastics, I have enough bags to fill a large contractor bag. Tackle collection is just another way to enjoy the pastime to the fullest.
Probably 300 or so hard crankbaits.

I dare you to make a video of yourself using said $300 purse to hold tackle trays. "HEY BABE YOU'RE RIGHT!! I DO FEEL TOTALLY FABULOUS OUT HERE! THAT $60 TACKLE BACKPACK HAS GOT NOTHIN' ON THIS!!"
There will probably be a fresh tackle box waiting for you haha
More than I need or could ever possibly use, but not as many as I want.

Basement is full so the overflow has been going to the garage or dining room.

If it's too windy or stormy or not enough time to fish, you go buy lures. What's wrong with that. Besides it is cheaper than collecting guns, cars, motorcycles, aircraft, wives, mistresses, homes, etc...

That cracked me up! Yea she would rather me just buy them and never, ever touch them, ever...
One thing I learned, don't ever let her rattle ya.. Water off a ducks back... Yea, ok... I tryed to learn it....
I don't think the dining room is a good place for tackle, the garage is better, you can always park your vehicle on the driveway. On 9/13/2014 at 1:54 AM, Munkin said:Basement is full so the overflow has been going to the garage or dining room.

I don't keep much , I have a Plano over/under box and a double size binder for plastics.
I might use 20 percent of what I have on a fishing trip, and that's probably high.
I usually only buy new when I .....A. run out, B. lose, C. break any.
This is all I have and need and I've been bass fishing for over 30 years now.
I have too many lures
and yet I still have alot less than most of u!
30+ Large Plano and Falcon boxes full? 6 Cardboard boxes just for bags of plastics? They've all got a use some time, some place.
On 9/14/2014 at 8:16 AM, David P said:6 Cardboard boxes just for bags of plastics?
Get rid of the cardboard boxes and get some 66 quart plastic tubs at wallymart. Plastics weigh a lot once you get enough of them so the bottom will give on those boxes.

If storage wasn't an issue would have done it long ago!
I took my boat in one time because it didn't seem to want to come out of the hole and jump on plane like it use to. Well after the dealer messed with it for a couple of days trying new props and height settings he asked for my storage key to the middle front locker. And low and behold when he removed the 100 + lbs of plastic and lead, the problem went away. So now I try and keep it under 75 lbs. Dang Bait monkey
You need a bigger, meaner and more powerful outboard so you can carry your stuff, problem solved. On 9/14/2014 at 11:09 AM, warpath58 said:I took my boat in one time because it didn't seem to want to come out of the hole and jump on plane like it use to. I have way more than I hope my wife ever finds out I own.
I carry a few hundred hardbaits in the boat with me, then there's the 20 or so 3700 boxes full of "backups" in the garage and almost an entire wall of pegboards full of extra plastics, hooks, sinkers, line, and lures still in the boxes.
I've been laughing hard reading this thread, hard enough a couple of times I had tears. I've been fishing for 50 years now and have collected lures for at least half that. About six, seven years ago I attempted to count my hard baits, most of them still in their original boxes, for insurance purposes and gave up at a thousand. When I pass, my family will have a lot of fun organizing an estate sale. Is lure collecting an addiction? You bet it is.

Here´s your absolute worse nightmare:
Your wife is gonna sell ALL YOUR CRAP FOR WHAT YOU SAID YOU PAID FOR IT !!!!
I can see my Megabass Parahatches going for 3 bones a piece .....
Simply put, If I looked at my lure collection logically I have WAY too much. But if I just look at it I have way too little!

Well now that I've read through I'll post because I no longer feel bad. I have boxes like Munkin, it is an entire closet that my wife gave me as we have 3 bedrooms, the 3rd bedroom is my man-cave where my rods and fishing stuff in general is stored. I won't guess as to how many hard baits or even plastics, I know that if I fished everyday and we on a good worm bite, without exaggerating, I could probably go for at a minimum 2 years before I'd have to buy worms and that is assuming I go through them at a normal pace. I'm happy that I'm not the only one that has a hording issue!!!!
