So i just brought a new x rap and on my first cast it gotten snagged on something and my line snapped, i wouldn't feel so bad if it wasn't the 3rd time this happened.
How many times has this happened to you? Maybe my line is just awful
I'm sure there is more than one time but the most recent was a swimbait over $50 that a pickerel chewed off 2 seconds after it hit the water. Not a good day.
I have had brand new crankbaits, jerkbaits, etc.....fresh from the package with upgraded treble hooks bit off by pike many times on the first cast.
As soon as I read this topic, I started to laugh...d**n it!?
Funny this topic is up today. I went to Dicks sporting goods last night to get some Bull Shot weights and a few Bitsy Bug Jigs when I noticed all the New Live Target Sunfish on an End Cap but what really caught my eye was this Molix Supernato Beetle and I figured I needed both.
I went fishing this morning in one of my favorite ponds & with the warm weather they have still been crushing topwater frogs, so I figured I would give the $15 Molix beetle a try. On first Cast, I went to skip it under some branches from a fallen tree on the shoreline accross the creek, and I overshot my target and bait landed in the sticks and became stuck. I could not shake this thing loose, and finally figured I would tighten drag all the way down, and just pull. I broke it off and all I see is this awesome looking Lure hanging from the branches.
I decided to walk around the pond and through the woods to retrieve the lure. I was about half way down the fallen tree when I realized it was going to be a tough task but I took the extra step anyway. After falling in the water and being stuck in between all the branches I panicked (not sure why but I was like a little girl) and I did everything I could to get back out of that nasty water and when I did, I noticed the lure is now gone.....
I did learn one cool thing....The water I assumed was 3-4' was over my head so it seems the reason that spot was so good to me over the years is the water is 6' right on the bank which is undrecut, so hopefully I find the bait floating later today on the shoreline.
I just can't afford to buy another $15 Molix Beetle, never saw the action, but based on looks, it could be the ultimate Fisherman catcher I have seen how they package it etc...I will stick with my Pad crushers so I don't cry when I lose baits anymore.
Well I certainly feel bad seeing you lost something, but I do have to say it makes me feel better hearing other people with similar stories!
seems to happen most on more expensive lures lol
Lost a new jig today and a naked rage blade ON THE SAME BRANCH! Bank fishing leaves you about zero options once they're snagged really good.... From the kayak I would have retrieved both of those lures....
Too many times.
Just seeing them hanging on a branch out of reach is the worst
The worst is when your line is tangled at the top of your rod and you don't notice and you cast and your line breaks and the lure flies 100 yards and gone..
Aruku shad..casted it and for a split second i thought i made the furthest cast ever. It went 100 yards..no line attached.
I was fishing a heavy Krocodile spoon in the surf for the first time ever. On like the third cast, *snap*, gone like a rocket into the incoming waves.
Another time I was fishing a KVD 1.5 crankbait from the shore, snagged up on some tules about 10 feet out, 5 feet high, first half dozen casts so it was brand new and sparkling in the morning sun. No boaters/kayakers around to help and I didn't think the lure was valuable enough to wade into the water to retreive.
yep , had a brand new Norman DD22 .Reared back and fired a cast , the line snapped and I never did find that bait .
I bought my first, and only, Cavitron 2 weeks ago. I tied it on and dressed her up in a sleek trailer. I sent her flying only to see her never return. Knot must have let go. Man did she go flying. Now I am out the $7, but most importantly still haven't had a chance to try one out. FML
I cast off my Spro Rat almost every time I use it, luckily it floats.
Ive only recently started fishing lakes after moving from the coast. Losing tackle was a rare occurrence for me, but since i have begun fishing a local lake i have lost an x rap, rat l trap, heddon torpedo and a 1.5 crank bait, regrettably 3 out of 4 lost on the same day.
Right there with you guys. It's a real shock when you're perfect cast with a heavy topwater or squarebill sails out majestically toward a thrashing mass of shad getting hammered at surface, and then your realize the reason your perfect cast made it right into the mix is because your line just snapped. Only feeds the need for more and more baits: I find it hard to buy one lure to "just try" because I always need to have a backup in case the first lure doesn't survive long enough to give it an honest try.

I think ill have to buy at least 2 of the same lure from now on, given my track record of losing things.
First time with an a-rig I was trolling it in my kayak in 15' FOW for hybrids and in my FF I see a nice tree. I think to myself oh that looks good and then it happens. I'm stuck. Fully rigged it's about $25. Well I got 40lbs braid I will try and get it out. No luck. I tried using my anchor to bounce it out. Nope. Well I got braid and a fancy custom rod, I will pull it out. Pop and pop. Why 2 pops you ask? Funny story. Not only do I lose my $25 lure, I broke my $250 rod. Several obscenities later I peddle away heart broken and ticked at the same time. Hard headed I went and bought another and spanked the hybrids the next day. You better believe I watched my FF like a hawk and reeled my line in if I saw anything that might steal my lure.
I watched a pike devour my favorite shadow rap right next to the boat this summer. It swam away slowly, almost taunting me
Yes it has, several times. I even got it on video last time it happened.
Yesterday I picked up a new lure at Bass Pro Shops. It is a Spooltek 4 inch fatty perch for $15. Don't get me wrong that's a lot for a lure but this lure is one of the best you can get for Snook fishing. Well anyways I managed to snag it on a PVC pipe in the water and lost it but luckily I bought 2.

Just to give you an idea, I purchase jigs by bulk, cranks I´ve lost in the first cast ? ----> who´s counting, actually pretty much the only lure I very seldomly loose are spinnerbaits, I can literally count with my finger how many spinnerbaits I´ve lost in over 3 decades.
How's this for a "first cast" experience?: I fish this one place with stained water where for whatever reason the bass love firetiger crankbaits burned as fast as possible. The louder and bigger and more obnoxious the bait the better. So I got the bright idea that two of my favorite Crankin Raps had to be better then one, and put them on a YUM double up rig. First cast I flung this rig towards a likely spot and with a quick snap of my line I watched the two cranks fly off together like a pilot with his wingman close behind. They floated, but were quickly drifting away on the current. I hastily tied on the biggest, heaviest bait I could find - a 3/4 oz RES and chucked it as hard as I could toward the pair of cranks leisurely floating away. Not sure if it was the hasty knot or the heavy weight but either way it was on the first cast that that thing also snapped off, landing just beyond the cranks. Three lures and a double up rig in two casts... (I got very lucky and the cranks drifted into a shallow bay nearby, and I managed to snag them with a well-placed buzzbait hit, but only after 1/2 hour of "target practice" aiming at the cranks with the buzzbait).
I can think of three right off hand. Luckily I have blocked out the rest.
2 times
Perhaps this is the very reason I fish soft plastics
99% of the time now! LOL
Been a few lures I've lost due to either lapse of
concentration and casting my crank 40' up into
an old oak tree, or losing a brand new jig to a
hidden laydown deep in Davey Jones' Locker.
Bought a $30 Spro Rat. First cast, got it stuck in some low hanging branches. Broke my line by straight pulling, which made the branch (and the rat's tail) bob up and down. Then saw a huge bass jump out of the water to eat the rat and pull it down in the water where I've never been able to retrieve it (or the fish).

This is what gets me. Or maybe me not re-tying as much as I should. But I blame the line tangle. I agree with fishinfiend it seems to happen to me more on the expensive lures. I haven't gotten bitten by the swimbait craze yet so its not terrible but hate even losing $15-25 baits first cast. For that reason, some of these higher priced lures have sat in the tackle box for a few years without getting wet. Stupid, I know.
I can only remember 1 time. It was a Stanley Ribbit Frog. It was not nearly as painful as the $240 rod and reel setup that went with it (Daiwa Ballistic T3 paired with a Fenwick silverhawk). Hooked the frog hooks during the backcast on the back of the boat somewhere and when the hooks freed up it catapulted the whole setup 30 yards down stream in the river. Darndest thing you could ever imagine. Still hurts to this day.
It was probably about the 3rd cast with my brand new Lucky Craft Pointer, most expensive lure I'd bought to date, and it broke off in some brush. Made me pretty discouraged.
I haven't lost any on the first cast but have lost my fare share that is for sure but it still sucks when that happens.
On the fox river, theres a popular bend for smallies. On this bend theres a large rock, and 5 feet further down stream theres a tree less than 2 feet off the water over hanging a large area. You can tell its a heavily targeted spot because it's all different color during fall when the leafs are gone thanks to the lures all over the tree.
Umbrella rig. Cast, snagged, gone. My first and last umbrella rig.
Hootie
More than I'd like to admit. It typically happens only with jerkbaits.
How about losing one before you even cast? Last summer, I reeled in to change lures. I cut off my lure and got out a new 1/2oz. Stanley rattling jig and carefully rigged a Pit Boss trailer on it. I tossed it over the side and picked up the rod to cast. It was then I realized I had never tied it on... Doh!
Tight lines,
Bob
One advantage of fishing on small ponds is that when the surface freezes over you can walk around the edge and collect all the lures everyone else has lost on the branches.

Unfortunately that can be hard in South Florida.
I hardly spend more then $10 on one specific bait, however last spring I got a gift card for my birthday and while at Dicks I picked up a Live Target field mouse. The very first trip I noticed a lot of topwater activity and decided that was the time to catch my first topwater mouse fish. Tied it on and then looked around for my first target. After noticing a small rare stump in the canal I had been fishing I took my cast, landing 5-6 feet behind my target. My first thought was "perfect" placement. I start to work the mouse back to the boat and as it comes next to the stump I see a HUGE swirl and my bait is traveling sideways. I feel my rod load and set the hook. The very first few seconds I'm thinking I've just hooked into a "teener" and it's stripping line off my reel like nothing ever before. My partner then asks where the stump went that I had castes to and glanced over to notice the stump was now missing. After a couple minutes of chasing and struggling I see a dark shadow under the boat. Then I see the snout and open mouth of teeth with my mouse hooks firmly implanted deep inside of a 5 foot gator. Needless to say the stump was the nose of the gator and I had never noticed. $15 down the drain in ONE cast.....
" 5 foot gator" nopenopenopenopenopenopenopenopenope
This is a big reason for braid for me
I've had this happen multiple times but the one time I remember the most was the first swimbait I bought. It was a 6" Huddleston. I tied it on planning to use it and figure out how it worked and the first cast my line snapped and I saw it sail across the lake and land in the water. Let's just say I wasn't too happy to see my first $20+ bait fly away the first cast.
1/2 oz Terminator Spinnerbait, gold/silver tandem willows, white on white. First cast, over hand, sailed high and off to the right, did a few loop-d-loops around the limb of a tall pine. This was right after they came out with them and I think I spent about $10 for one. My cousin laughed so hard he almost made himself sick..
I lost a spinnerbait before the first cast. I was just starting to tie on a spinnerbait when I saw a snake coming toward the boat about ten feet away. In trying to scare the snake away, I somehow manage to dump my spinnerbait overboard. I felt kind of stupid but at least I did't break my rod fighting the snake.
On the very first cast I'll say only a handful. 2nd 3rd 4th 5th ect.. Well that's more than I can remember. Toothy critters can really cost you some money in tackle.

what line are you using?
I have lost a bunch of different lures before but never on my first cast. I've also never lost one to a pike which is amazing since I have caught pike on everything from crappie jigs to jerkbaits without wire leaders.

50lb. braid with a short 25lb. mono leader. "Almost every time I use it" is an over-exaggeration, it's more like the worst time possible.

seems like a good setup i can't wait to start throwing mine next year
Hudd 68 Special, first one. Snagged on a tree in 10fow, fishing from the bank, of course I bombed my cast out there so not able to get it back. Broke my heart. Sold all my swimbaits after that.

sad to hear that one bad experience ruined swimbaits for you but i can definitely understand it with the cost of the lures
Y'all actually count?
Lost em on the first cast, last cast, & every where in between.
What ticks me off is losing em on the first hook set. Had a new Stanley Wedge tied on, first cast, first hook set, she went under a limb, & snapped my line. 15 seconds later about a 7# bass tail walks with my Wedge in her mouth!

I couldn't handle losing any more 20+ Swimbaits lol
Reading all this made me remember my first bad incident - I was still fairly new and had bought some of the original D&M Piranha Chatterbaits, the most expensive bait to date for me at something like $8. Third cast at a local reservoir, I got hung up on a rock, had to snap it off. I got so ticked I used nothing but soft plastics for months before mustering up the courage to tie on another hard bait.
i just bought a kvd spinner bait and first cast got a fish and he got me hung up. so i had to cut the line.
I lost a $40 spro bbz 8" that had only landed 2 fish. I thought it was a sand/mud bottom so I took my cast net back later that day to try and get it. Nope, there were rocks down there, and a $40 swimbait rescue mission turned into a $60 cast net sacrifice without finding the bait either.

I did almost the exact same thing with the first cavitron that I bought.
I cut a lures off and put it away in the tackle box and when I was starting to tie the cavitron on my wife askked me to hand her something out of the tackle box. After I handed her what she asked for, I tossed the cavorting over the edge of the boat and realized what I had done before it even hit the water. I quickly grabbed my rod and unsuccessfully tried to snag it as it sank. All I could do is sit and watch as it sank out of sight.
More often then i care to say,Normally a real expensive crankbait.

i can imagine it would suck i definitely need to pick up a lure retriever before i start throwing them
Worst day: Five Siebert Outdoors Jigs on five casts.
Once so far, brand new Strike King spinnerbait when I first go back into fishing. My knot was tied but very poorly and came un-tied on the cast and I watched the spinnerbait hit the water and subsequently sink to the bottom never to be seen again.
I always look at losing tackle as, every now and then the fishing gods require you to donate some tackle to the waters, and they're taking their tithe.

I call those "moon shots"
I call it "First Cast Syndrome". For some reason my first cast is always a gamble whether it be getting a birds nest, getting snagged, or losing a lure. So what i do now is my first cast with a new lure is always a short cast to open water. Ive found this helps a ton, because now i get a feel for the lure, its weight n flight so i can be more accurate when i actually cast.

Lmao!
Seems to happen regularly with brand-new Rapala DT 10's.
3 times, 2 brand new rattle traps & a brand new Terminator when they first came out, it did hurt .
Happened twice to me:
1. Biwa S-Trout (35USD)
2. Huddleston Weedless 6 inch (25 USD)
--> Both days = ruined!
Oh good, it's not just me who's had this happen!
Happens to me atleast once a year.
Lost a few xcaliburs last year.
