Ive been getting skunked lately and I've been blaming it on this Florida heat. I've been using senkos, lipless cranks, t-rigs and topwater without so much as a tap. While the heat may have something to do with it, I've very recently discovered the ned rig. Why didn't I try this before? Got out and caught 3 keepers in about 1.5 hrs on my local lake! Works great for shallow and deep water and keeps very clean even without a weedguard. Just saying if you are using your normal techniques and lures and not catching its time to change it up. The ned rig will be in my tackle box from here on out. Thanks Ned!!
So you've found out eh? You're not kidding, those babies will catch fish when nothing else does. I don't know why, I don't care. They catch. Period. Consider yourself now a NedHead
Yup, it works. Check out the 3-pounder I caught while filming the Ned rig...

Must be photoshopped, Neds only catch dinks haha
Sorry im new...whats a ned rig?
Duh...video...now i know
The same thing happen to me. I was not catching anything. Put the NED rig on for the first time and caught 5. They were all smaller but I would rather catch 5 small then none at all.
Where yall buying the ned rig jig heads?
I wish they'd come out with a lighter brush guard jig head and a little bigger worm, maybe a 4". It would scare the dinky dinks away and catch a few bigger bass. Biggest I have caught on lil neddy is a 4.5 lb. then after that all 1lb or smaller. Even caught a 2 inch bass on it!! Bait was bigger than the bass! The problem I have is it really picks up a lot of weeds, even if you cast where you think there are none. Good fish catcher though, no doubt!!
I got skunked today for the first time since May... looks like I'm gonna have to take a look at this

Use a full sized Hula StickZ or a Finesse WormZ or a Zoom 4" lizard or Tiny Brush Hog - all 4" baits used regularly by Midwest Finesse anglers..."Ned" is a philosophy or style of fishing, not just one type of soft plastic bait (TRD or 1/2 ZinkerZ)

Well when I think of the ned rig I picture the small mushroom head jig head and elaztek plastics. They really are nearly indestructible and float very well, also have a very subtle enticing action it seems. No other plastic could replace the trd in this jighead, if you still caught fish it would be one of those days you could throw anything and they would eat it. I would be throwing it a lot more if it didn't get hung up in the weeds like I said earlier!

All I can add then is that you have fallen victim to the hype of recent converts and marketing. Hula StickZ and WormZ are Elaztech baits from Z-Man. Even Ned rigs and rotates between 8-10 different soft plastics trying to find the shape and action they'll hit best on any given day...and always fished on mushroom head jigs.

I've only used this once and my experience is the same as I'm sure most other anglers. After rigging it up I was hyped about the action (zman trd+zman shroomz), I casted in, instant fish, I casted in, instant snag. Can't wait to get ahold of those new weedless shroomz...

I had to order mine from bps as they didn't have them in store. I haven't seen them anywhere else aside from TW, but ill only buy something there if I need $50 worth.

Yeah, I'm thinking a jackall crosstail shad would slay. Man, those things do, anyway.
I always put a ned rig on my 5 year old nephews rod. He aways catches fish. Mostly dinks and blue gills but he loves it

They make that- its called a hula stick. It even has a crazy hairdo to give it extra wiggle (you can cut it off if you don't like it). Also check out the Keitech product catalog, they have exactly what you're looking for in a weed guarded light jighead. Another option would be the Jackall weighted wacky jig- all simply a means to an end though, and don't get too caught up in What's "SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR" the Ned, etc.
My experience with the standard Ned set-up is poor. Too many sticks and snags here. If I'm dropping a small jig/worm in the water, it has to be weedless.
I've lost more Shrooms than I can afford to buy.
They work great for me, but I will also be glad when a weedless version comes out. I've lost several to cover, and many times they come up with grass on em'
Rumor is they're making a weedless variant....who knows....
Summertime heat go plastics.
Great tip Glenn.
Thanks for the info on the hula stick jighead and keitech baits. I never knew they exisisted. There is such a plethora of bass lures it's mind boggling. You couldn't throw them all in a lifetime it seems. I'll have to check them out. It's not my go to bait, but can really produce heavily at times under the right conditions, and maybe in a last ditch effort. It's hard to find many of the bass baits around here let alone rods, I had to order most all of mine . It seems like when the new best thing is out in the country we won't see it for a year or two at least. Everyone fishes walleye and panfish it seems, but that dosent bother me, and I most always catch lots of bass, some hogs too. I used to go for walleye and such my whole life since a boy, like a "normal" person would, but I got really really bored, even with just the style of fishing. I love bass fishing, and everything there is to it!
where'd you pick up the rig?
I've been out of the game for a number of years (like '07) and am diving back in. Lots of new rigs out, but this peaks my interest. I generally throw a slider when things go awry.
I ran into Ned on the water last week at one of his usual haunts. Him and 2 other guys put on the water not long after I did and took off about the same time, we talked for about 15 minutes at the ramp, I believe he'd caught 53 or 57 in 3.5 hours. I'd only caught 6 but I was fishing a Bullshooter All his rods were rigged up with his namesake rig, but there were several different styles of baits, not just the TRD. He's a big fan of a discontinued Zman bait called the Rain MinnowZ I believe.
I fished the Ned this past weekend pretty heavily on a deep, very clear lake in Northern MInnesota. I tossed it from 15' down to 30' and caught quite a few fish on it. Easily 20. I was using the TRD and the mushroom head. The one thing I noticed though was the size of the fish were on the smaller side. I fished the same area's with a t-rigged biospawn exo stick worm and caught less fish than the Ned, but they were overall bigger fish. For some reason the little bass were destroying the Ned, while the bigger fish wanted a bigger presentation.
I still had a lot of fun fishing it. It's something I found you can fish vertically or cast it out and hop it back in. Either way is pretty fun. I was using a Veritas medium light spinning rod with 6lb line. I only lost rigs when the occasional northern pike would take a swipe at it.
I'm definitely keeping the Ned in my rotation for my finesse rod. Nice change up from a shakey head and drop shot.
oops double post
For all you guys who need help on finding Ned rigs, do an internet search for ned rig, then follow your nose to figure out what it is and where to buy. It's not that hard.
I've actually just turned the bait and put the jig hook back into the TRD like you would hook any other worm weedless. Just get it as straight as possible. It still worked and picked up almost no weeds.
There is a weedless jighead on the way, it was one of the pics from ICAST in a Bass article.
If you want a bigger bait try the SK Zero stick. It is a senko KO made out of the same material as the TRD.

Just caught a 3 lber myself on the ned rig today because i only put 2 fish in the boat in 2 hours. 2nd cast and hooked into a 3 lber. First decent fish I have caught on the ned rig, and boy am i impressed with those mushroom head jigs. I thought for sure that small hook would be bent out, but it held the fish on just as it should have .
Went fishing a couple of days ago and wasn't catching anything in my hot spots. Got desperate and decided to try the Ned rig for the 1st time. I didn't stay them but didn't get skunked. Caught about a 2.5lbs bass and a 14" crappie. Pretty sure I missed a few crappie but I don't blame the lure for that. Currently trying to find a good stout jig head with keeper. The zman shroom head wasn't all that great.
I absolutely love it.. Caught some big smallies yesterday on it.
Caught 3 LMB's on the ned rig today in about 20 minutes. They were on the smaller side, but it was effective.
Guys, I'm thinking the Neko rig is basically the same deal but cheaper to rig. It is really effective.
P.S. I do not use fancy expensive nail weights, just drywall screws.
If you want a weedless NedRig, just rig it like a shaky head using the mushroom jig head. Run the hook in the tip of the bait then back out, then bury the tip of the hook in the bait.
