Smokin Rooster 2024

fishing user avatarRyneB reply :

I just wanted to see what people think of this bait, and what is there favorite way to fish it. It has by far been my biggest surprise bait. My favorite way to fish it with a small lead weight, i throw it in the grass, weeds, etc. and i just reel it in on a slow retrieve. I always catch fish on this thing.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

4/0 EWG 1/4 oz weighted hooks

fishing user avatarShane J reply :

Yup, Roadwarrior nailed it. Swim it anywhere as a swim jig, and you're right, always catch fish on that thing.

fishing user avatarrubba bubba reply :

Fish it weightless as well.  Big producer both as a topwater and under water for me.

fishing user avatarBig-O reply :

RyneB, you're rigging is very popular and like RW mentioned the weighted hook on it works extremely well too. I haven't fished it on top but every other way I can think of and with great success.

I learned something a few Summers back when the fish were on deep humps and ledges. On a tough mid day bite, I removed the skirt from my Football Jig and threaded the Rooster on it....it was "GAME ON". Now this is a standard set up on my deck

Flipping, T and C rigged, on weighted hooks or on jig heads for swimming or dragging are the most popular methods I'm aware of.

Hope that helps,

Big O

fishing user avatarrevoman reply :

Must be me - I cant get a sniff with them.

fishing user avatar.ghoti. reply :

I done the best with the Rooster on a jighead.

Evo Shake2 head, with the bait run right on the hook shank, the hook totally exposed.

Fin-Tech Skip Jig, only one way to rig this.

I fish Roosters T-rigged and weightless too, but the jighead seems to outfish all other methods. For me anyway.

great bait. All three thumbs up, Big-O

fishing user avatarOwasco reply :

Awesome! Simply Awesome.

Hands Down this is the best soft plastic bait I've ever used.

I use it with a 5/0 or 6/0 Keel weighted hook. I like to use different retrieves. The keel weight helps keep the bait down on faster retrieves.

Bottom Line: I have yet use this bait and not catch a fish.

The Space Monkey is a close #2.

All this in my humble opinion of course.

Ought to be a real killer on one of these........

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

Flip it, Pitch it, Punch it ;)

fishing user avatarCWB reply :

Try it on a Gammy 4/0 EWG Superline hook.

I use it as a swimbait type bait over the tops of weeds that grow almost right to the surface. Superline hook is just heavy enough to act as a keel but still let you retrieve it slowly and keep it on top.

Cat's out of the bag on this bait Big-O.

No sleeper anymore.

fishing user avatarlogan9209 reply :

i've yet to get a bite on one. i bought my first pack a few days ago (june bug color). the problem i have (i think) is that i can't cast it very far like i can other plastics. even with my bait caster it always cast short. i have to bank fish which leaves out alot of pitching/flipping. i am not giving up on it though. those cost $6 where i'm from so i will find a way to use them.

fishing user avatarGlenn reply :

I love Roosters! Great bait. I catch most the way RW rigs them, but standard Texas rigging works very well for flippin/pitchin.

fishing user avatarSGT Rico reply :

Its my go to C-rig soft plastic. The rooster is deadly!!!

fishing user avatarMumpy reply :

Hmmm, I've got a pack of em but never gave them a fair shot. I'll be casting it on my next outing.

Thanks fellas

fishing user avatarsoopd reply :

I caught them good this weekend with it Carolina rigged

fishing user avatarscrutch reply :

I Carolina rig it and drag it slowly through deep structure in summer, and drag it anywhere else the rest of the year!

I dip the tail in chartreuse JJ's Magic post-spawn and while the bluegills are spawning.

Awesome bait! Especially in pressured waters.

fishing user avatarlogan9209 reply :

I may be in the wrong post or maybe I needed to make my own post, so I apologize ahead of time. I finally got me some hooks for the rage rig. They're mustad hooks with the spring lock. The advantage is that the weight can be adjusted. I'll be trying my rage rigged smokin rooster today.

fishing user avatariceintheveins reply :

Haven't used the rooster yet but I'm sure it would work in similiar ways to the space monkey, which I have used and do very well on.

fishing user avatarmatstone7 reply :

Great all around bait.

Bass just keep eat it!

Both arms have been pulled from this smokin rooster and it was still catching fish.

fishing user avatarlogan9209 reply :

Have you ever wondered if some one puts a lure in the fish's mouth then take a picture?...I'm just kidding. Nice chunker. I got the same color. Still have yet to get a strike. Not even a nibble.

I still think that a lot has to do with the fact that for some reason I can seem to cast the smokin' rooster as far as I can others. It's weird. I've loosened the fine tuner. I've loosened the magnetic brake. I used both hands. It's like when it gets to a set distance it just drops. No matter how I rig it.

The darn lure is kicking my tail and giving me rage. It is the only soft plastic I have out of all the 40 bags (10lb) that I can't cast far and can't buy a strike. Someone please make a video using the smokin' rooster, landing a bass, and hopefully some underwater shots.

fishing user avatarJoePhish reply :

I Rage Rig my Roosters, usually with 5/0 - 1/4oz, though sometimes I'll go 1/8oz.

Fish them around weed edges and pads. Mostly go with Black/Blue Flake but have caught fish on almost ever color I've used.

fishing user avatarlogan9209 reply :

I found Mustad 4/0 adjustable keel weight 1/8oz with spring lock yesterday. I thought I should be able to cast it. It seemed like no matter which way or how hard it would go the same distance. LOL! I'm going to keep plugging at it. Especially after seeing that pic with the same colored one in the bass's mouth.

I think I messed up when I fished the same 2 basic lures (worm and lizard) the same basic way for the last 6 months. I've created some bad habits that I've got to break. I just can't figure out why even with 2 different baitcasters I can't throw them further. Hmmm......

The hook in the picture is 3/8oz so I can get some distance casting and fish it faster. The three fins on the rooster do tend to catch come air when casting so the extra weight helps. Wind shear isn't effecting bait above, I can tell you that.

fishing user avatarMrSwimJig reply :

I have tried fishing them like a swim jig as suggested earlier and I still have not caught any fish on one yet. I am by no means giving up on them the action is great, I guess its only a matter of time till I prevoke one into bighting it.

fishing user avatarlogan9209 reply :

Hmmm.....right now I can't afford any more hooks. Think it'd be alright if I tacked on a 1/8oz bullet sinker or a 3/16oz bullet sinker?

Sure Logan, a standard T/rig works well too.

fishing user avatarlogan9209 reply :

So to be sure I understand this. It's okay to use a keel weighted hook along with a bullet sinker? By the way, I love the keel weighted hook. I hardly pull any slop anymore.

That's not something I would suggest.

I would choose either a: weighted hook, a T/rig or a Carolina rig.

X2... IMO, the Rooster is best used for flipping/pitching, C rigged, Rage Rigged, T rigged and mounted on a Naked Jig (without Skirt). As far as castability, I don't advise weightless but if you choose that presentation, using a 5/0 superline hook is the way to go ;)

fishing user avatarlogan9209 reply :

Part of me is beginning to think that either I'm suffering from a brain fart concerning smokin' rooster or I chose the wrong color. Another part swears that it can't nessisarily (how ever you spell that word) be color. Strike King is not a rookie company throwing colors out there hoping that it works. June bug has to work. Heck, matstone caught a nice one with the same color.

Casting is still an issue for me. I put on some some 30# braid (8# diameter) due to my Spook wanting to climb a tree and run away. I'm hoping that will help. Although that rules out c-rig I think.

I can't help but feel a deep dark depressive weight sitting on me since I joined this website. Since I've joined, I've realized how very little I know about bass fishing. The website isn't the issue, however. It does what it's suppose to do: teach and inform. The issue is that there's an operator failure on my part. Either it's just not clicking with me or, in some cases, there are obstacles due to bank fishing that I haven't figured out how to get around.

Part of me thinks that I should take a week off from fishing. But there was one day I was real bad sick and it took all I had NOT to go fishing. Sorry, didn't mean to switch topics or go on and on. It's just that I don't have anyone here to really talk things through.

fishing user avatarmatstone7 reply :

I think there is still hope logan and it may just be a matter of time.....

It's my opinion that Junebug is a color to be used in stained/dirty water or at night. Being a dark color bait, it provides a great silhouette in those conditions.

If it's bright out or your water is clear or just slightly stained, you may consider trying a more natural color like green pumpkin or watermelon/red.

When fishing soft plastics in general there are always three things to consider:

  • bait profile fish are keying-in on on a given day.
  • Bait color fish are happy to eat on a given day.
  • The presentation that is triggering fish to bite.

Now I know typing the above is much easier than actually putting it all together on the water but, if you work at it, it will happen.

Don't get discouraged either.

I had the same sort of thing happening with the Eeliminator when I first tried it. My wife would be catching fish one after another on the eel and I couldn't buy a bite on it for multiple outings. I got so frustrated that I fished just that bait for close to a month until I realized a slight tweak of my presentation made the difference. I was impatient and fishing of the bait to fast based upon conditions that led to all my frustration. Since then, I won't leave home without them and most always have one rigged.

Believe me, it times like these and all the experimenting that you do just trying to catch a darned fish that will ultimately make you a well rounded angler.

Keep your chin up Logan.

fishing user avatarlogan9209 reply :

Thanks, mattstone, I appreciate your encouraging words. As far as color goes, I would normally agree with you. But, you know how sometimes you find a little quirk that doesn't fit the general rule of thumb? I have caught bass using a Zoom U-tail chartreuse pumpkin seed on a bright sunny day (or a lizard for that matter). These bass beat all I have ever seen.

I guess the solution for the time being is for me to save up the money and get a pack that has either green or brown in it. Since I've got to replace my Spook it'll be $10-12. For me that might take a little bit. In the mean time, I will try the June Bug when it's cloudy or when the water is dirty. I guess I was so stoked about finally getting a hold of the smokin' rooster that I didn't take things like what you said into consideration.

On the one hand you want to call bass fishing a money black hole. On the other hand, I could be spending the money on drugs or something stupid. I think fishing wins out. Heck, I haven't even played a xbox or playstation in almost 3 months. For me that's a record.

fishing user avatarBig-O reply :

Color matters most when color matters MOST ;) Especially in clearer water and daytime conditions. All colors catch fish when they are aggressively feeding but the natural colors will trick the finicky fish more easily. Often during an aggressive feed time in clear conditions, the bright off the wall colors that can be seen from longer distances will receive more hits... Darker conditions will call for colors that sillouette better, like the dark or heavier colors. The color flake is an accent that adds some flash for added attraction.

Like many fishing experiences, it starts with a guess on where the fish are, then placing your bait with a chosen style of presentation... After this point, it's your opportunity to react to your results ;) You'll continue to improve your results as you try and test new colors, presentation styles etc!

Stay after'em Logan!

fishing user avatarlogan9209 reply :

Okay, I got some black/blue flake earlier today. People have been saying that color works This morning I tried the june bug color on a c-rig, t-rig, chatterbait trailer, and weightless. At one point something started to take off with my Rooster on a c-rig, but it might have been a turtle. I have to assume that since the bass like my Yum version of GY Senko (black/blue flake), then it should be a good color for the Rooster. Hopefully I will have pics posted with it in a bass's mouth. At this point I don't care if a quarter pound bass takes it, just as long as a bass any bass takes it.

fishing user avatarMumpy reply :

Man I can't wait for Fathers Day to roll in here. Taking myself fishing that morning and I don't plan on coming home until someone calls me and say's Fathers Day is Officially OVER!

With that said, I purchased a package of Watermelon Red and Junebug Roosters in the anticipation of things!
