Waterproof jacket that won't break the bank 2024

fishing user avatarCybrSlydr reply :

Wasn't sure where to put this as I didn't see a forum for apparel and the like - so here goes!

Might be trout fishing on Saturday and could be raining in the morning.  I don't currently have a jacket I can wear that will keep the wind/water out so I'm asking for your help!

Looking around - my God, the price some of you can afford to pay on this gear!!! - shows some absolutely insane prices for jackets.  (when I realized you could have over a thousand dollars invested in just a pair of waders and a jacket...)

I'm looking at or under the $100 price point.  On Tackle Warehouse, they have a jacket that looks like it might fit the bill on sale, but it's XXL (I'm but an XL so far - lol).  UnderArmor Storm Surge for like $65.

Thank you for your input folks!

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Cabela's rain jackets are good and reasonable price range, Rain Stopper is on sale.

fishing user avatarKidflex reply :

If there is an army surplus nearby, usually you can get an unused woodland camo gortex jacket and pants for under $100. I used them in the military and still use them now. Works great

Columbia Men's Watertight II Front-Zip Hooded Rain Jacket.

$40 at Amazon. I bought my dad one last season, and it was so much better than my 10-year-old Columbia rain jacket that I bought myself one too. I wear it even when it's not raining because it's terrific at blocking wind.

How breathable is that jacket?  I'm a very warm person and sweat.  :)

Very breathable. That's one of the things that set it apart from my older Columbia rain jacket, which didn't breath at all and left my arms sticking to the inside of the jacket.

fishing user avatarTurkey sandwich reply :

I have a breathable North Face rain jacket that is killer.  It's roomy enough for down underneath if it gets cold, it's comfortable even if it isn't cold, it fits great over waders if wading is your thing, and it packs down tiny.  I paid somewhere around $100 for it. I have a fleece lined water proof Cabela's jacket also, but the North Face jacket has completely replaced it.

fishing user avatarSneakyPete reply :

I just ordered the HUK all weather jacket and bib. They were each on sale for $168. They were $224. Search the forum posted a video of a guy testing it out.

fishing user avataruncle reddog reply :

Check out amazon. They have the frabill F2 surge jacket for $48 and the bibs for $59. My brother just got these and likes them. I think they're regularly  $200 or so for each. I have stormr so I can't say personally, but the frabill suit does have pretty good reviews on Amazon. Hope this helps.

fishing user avatarFishes in trees reply :

Deals for rain gear are out there and bargains are available.  HOWEVER - it has been my experience that you get what you pay for.  Should you purchase cheap rain gear - that's what you get.  Spend the money and get decent gear and it will last for a long time.

My Guide Wear was purchased around 2000 and it still looks and works great.   I have a medium duty 10X jacket & pants set that still works perfectly and that was purchased prior to the Guide Wear.

For summer use - Frog Toggs  will last as long as you take care of them and don't rip them up.

I'm not familiar with the Simms or Columbia products mentioned in previous posts.

fishing user avatarBareHook reply :

Frogs Togs rain suit at walmart camping section aprox $15

fishing user avatarMontanaro reply :

Find a columbia outlet near you.

Huge discounts.  Ive got some key gear from them.  They have some new rainproof fabric that doesnt need to habe its waterproofing reapplied

fishing user avatarCurtS26 reply :

Frabil.  I also bought the bibs and jacket

fishing user avatarrazor6570 reply :

I have a Columbia set that is great. I was in the same boat as you. Wanted a good set but not breaking the bank. Found Columbia pants for $35 and the Jacket for $35. They were at a local Columbia outlet. End of season clearance. If you look on line you can find the same or close to price on their rain gear.

fishing user avatar3dees reply :

I have a set of Cabela's guidewear. great suit, but a little to much for summer heat. just got Frabil F1 jacket and bibs for 69.00. Simm's, Huk, Under armour not an option. I'm sure they are good suits but I'm not paying those crazy prices.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Light weight breathable and rain proof = Gore Tex, look around for the best price on sales.

fishing user avatar3dees reply :

huge sale on Frabil til Saturday at fieldsupply.com

fishing user avatarRichF reply :

Check out Sierra Trading Post.  They usually have good deals on really nice stuff.  I got my Simms Prodry Jacket on there for $245 and my Simms Contender Jacket for $140.  Use this link and it will give you a discount (15 - 25% depending on how much you spend).  There are a couple Simms rain Jackets on here, excluded from the extra discount unfortunately, but they're still under $100.

fishing user avatarMumbly reply :

I use Columbia and it has never failed me. Whether it is my duck hunting jacket or my light rain jacket, it has performed great.

If you go the Columbia route make sure you what you buy is Omni-Tech (waterproof/breathable) and not Omni-Shield (water repellant)...huge difference.

fishing user avatarAC870 reply :

Academy's H20 rainsuit is one of the best deals going. Got em on sale for $49.99 month or 2 back.

fishing user avatarCybrSlydr reply :

Outstanding - I'm glad to see there are actually decently priced items out there.

Thanks for the help everyone!

fishing user avatarcgolf reply :

Just got home from Costco and picked up a breathable lightweight rain coat for 20 bucks. Since I only fish in the rain on vacation, I didn't need a high dollar coat, hoping this one will work out for me.

fishing user avatarfishwizzard reply :

The Marmot Precip can usually be found for under $100 (far under if you don't care about color) and generally gets a lot of "Best Value" reviews from the bigger camping review sites.  I have one of them and it is very nice for the money.

But, if you, like me, are a sweaty guy, look for something with pit-zips and the most breathable fabric you can afford, it's no use keeping the rain out if you are soaked with sweat.

fishing user avatarmheichelbech reply :

Cabelas Rainy River jacket at $129.   I've had mine about 20 years and still great. It is gore Tex.  Amazingly warm and not too hot for the weight of it.

fishing user avatarblckshirt98 reply :

In a pinch if you want something waterproof that you won't need often, Frog Toggs.

I also saw an ad on a sidebar for Huk Packable Raingear - $99 for the jacket or the pants -

Thanks again folks for all the input - like I said, it's really good to know there are good options out there that aren't $400! :)

Check out the deal sites like Steep&Cheep, Campsaver, The Cylmb, etc.  I got a $350 rain jacket for like $90 during a sale.  It is even in my preferred color, lime green.  It is so so much nicer then anything I have had before, I am gonna cry so hard when it gets shredded by thorns.  There are deal out there, especially if you don't care about color.

fishing user avatarNHBull reply :

LL Bean gortex  shell.  100.00

Lifetime warranty!

fishing user avatarHahookem reply :

Personally, I just use my Sitka jacket when I go fishing, though I did originally buy it as a duck hunting jacket.

There's plenty of decent duck hunting jackets that would probably do the job just fine.

fishing user avatarRingonu reply :

Cabelas appears to be discontinuing their guidewear gortex pullovers.  Picked up one for $50 in the bargain cave.  Seen others at another store kn the rack for $70.  Might still be some out there if you have a store close.

fishing user avatarpunch reply :

Marmot Precip is an AMAZING rain jacket and you can pick them up for under $50. The precip pants are awesome too.. you don't HAVE to get a "fishing" rain suit. The camping/hiking world has tested rain equipment that's cheaper & just as good (if not better) than the fishing brands.

Why buy a $600 huk or simms suit when you can get a Marmot jacket & pants for like $70 on ebay?

fishing user avatarChoporoz reply :

Count me as another Frog Toggs fan.  I got a set as sort of an emergency buy - last year, I 'needed' something cheap to get me through a weekend, and hopefully rest of spring.  I have been very impressed with how waterproof, wearable and packable they are.  I got cheapest avail, maybe $45 for both, and my only complaint is that I don't have pockets in either the jacket or the pants.

That looks like a nice jacket for $40. I use Grundens for my foul weather gear.

Frog Togs leak on me.

Ridiculous sale on Frabill fishing jackets and suspendered pants. They run a bit large.
