How Many Lures? 2024

fishing user avatarrboat reply :

Thought this would be interesting. This will be a best guess for most of us. (Do not include soft plastics)

1. How many of your hard baits have never caught a fish?

2. How many of your hard baits have never been in the water?

For me:

1. about 60 percent

2. about 25 percent

Lets hear it.

fishing user avatarSmokinal reply :

Are you talkin just whats in my boat or my overstock in the basement?

fishing user avatarMIbassyaker reply :

Wow. Probably 80% or more never caught, and 50% or more never in the water.

Oddly, that never seems to stop me from buying more.

fishing user avatarpapajoe222 reply :

I'd venture a guess that 50% of the baits I carry have caught fish for me.  Another 40% are the same baits in different colors.  The only hard baits I have that have never been used are a handful of jerkbaits, a Lucky13 and a couple of Rapala DT16s

fishing user avatarJaw1 reply :

I would venture a guess of %25 have caught fish because I use them the most. Then there's the %25 that hasn't caught a fish but has seen water. The other %50 sit in the Plano boxes and I never get around to trying them

fishing user avatarkickerfish1 reply :

I am not a big hardbait fan due to the waters I frequent. I have quite a few still that serve there purpose but I probably only use them 10-20% of the time. Probably less than 5% of my hardbaits have been fished and even a smaller % have actually caught fish.

fishing user avatarkudagra reply :

60/25

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

Zero..............I use one until I do catch a fish, eventually they all catch fish.  For the most part, I take 3-5 lures with me on outing.  Roosterrail, spoon, jerkbait, topwater  and marabou jig.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

Seriously?? I find baits in my boat that I don't even remember buying, let alone remember how many I have that have or haven't caught fish.

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

Everything in the boat has caught fish, or gets used. As for the "extra" stuff I have at home....well....I am not even sure what I have, other than it's way more than I need, or could fit in the boat, and a bunch of it I have never caught a fish on or used it, but I have it anyways.

Fishing from a smaller vessel, space is a precious commodity.

If it's in the boat - I fish it.

I'll say that perhaps 25 % on the baits have yet to produce .

That about as much unproven inventory as I'm will to tote around.  When a bait continues to blank in conditions I'd expect it to produce - It goes into the "probably going to get sold" box - which happens here routinely during the hard water period.

btw in reference to the OP - Not doing #2 is a major contributing factor to #1.

Me too. I have thirty year old lures still in the box .

fishing user avatargulfcaptain reply :

I tend to stick to a few brands in assortted colors.  So I'd say 50% of what I throw I use almost anywhere have caught fish, 50% (deep diving) I use only when I can (only 2 brands with various colors and have caught fish, but have 2 of each hence 50%).

Then there is about another 25% that have hit the water but no bites as of yet.

And I have probably another 25% that I haven't used or are still in the package.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

I can't recall a lure that has not caught a fish, but I probably fish less than 10% of the

tackle I own/ collect.

fishing user avatarSenko lover reply :

I'm the type that can't stand stuff sitting around. I do one of two things with my extra tackle:

1. I trade it with BR members for baits and reels.

2. I fish it until I catch something on it.

That's just me. I see no point in baits sitting around that I don't use.

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

If it does not produce I no longer own it!

One Huddleston proto that will never see water!

fishing user avatarbuzzed bait reply :

hold up.... if my wife is asking, i use them all and they all catch fish.....

if she's not listening.....  probably about 50-75% have caught fish.  Easily 15-20% have never been fished.

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

Simple, 90-90

Cuz I´m persistent, keep fishing with the same baits over and over again the only department that gets "new" baits are soft plastics because those break, if it ain´t broke don´t fix it !!!

fishing user avatarMaxximus Redneckus reply :

I keep buying and trading for hardbaits.i only use spooks, minus ones, rapalas and rattle traps.but people like senko master make me trade for hardbaits i may never use.there is a mystical feeling when i look into a 4700 size flambue box with zerust dividers and its jam packed with hardbaits i might never use.and they dont take up any room.so ill keep on falling

I have this happen, plus have those that i KNOW I bought yet can't find! haha

fishing user avatarLendiesel22 reply :

I carry 6 or 8 @size and color ratl traps, jerk baits, and top waters. My offender box is the crank bait box. In my hard baits I have certian ones that I am always going to reach for in certain conditions bc confidence in what you are throwing is important. So I really dont have a problem selecting a lure based on condition that I am excited to throw out of the sizes and colors I have. Then there are crank baits......deep,mid range, square bills, sub surface, short and fat, flat side, tight wobble, wide wobble, on and on and on. So many awesome colors, and styles. Very easy to accumulate and store. 15% never see water and 40% never had a hit.

fishing user avatarbigbill reply :

Crankbaits 85% caught bass the others been wet.

Topwater 20% caught bass. The 80% I just added, been sick couldn't fish.

Spinnerbaits 10% caught bass 80% backup on the bench.

Inline spinners 5% caught bass 95% second string.

Spooks 5% caught bass 95% get wet or waiting.

Now on a tough day everyone goes in the pool.

I have noticed that every lure will catch fish sooner or later. If my tune your hard baits. Spinnerbaits must run exactly vertical. Trailer must be installed perfect.

Your presentation has to be flawless.

Reel, line speed matters. I say 1,000, ( one thousand) slowly in my mind is one turn on the crank.

Make sure your hand makes a perfect circle on the reel handle not an egg shape. The bait will go fast and slow with a egg shape movement.

With the perfect circle the bait is more even speed wise. Tune your hand to make a even circle not a roller coaster ride of up and down.

I carry every,,

Bomber FAT A size 05 in every color.

Bomber Model A size 05 in every color.

spook in every color

Norman thin N every color

Norman fat boy in most colors

Topwater in every color.

The bass do not see all the colors all the time

I like the idea of calling your tackle a 'collection'. When it comes down to it, that is exactly what it is.  Now I can just tell the wife I'm in a mood to add to my collection. She should understand as she has a few collections of her own.

fishing user avatarned_riggins reply :

I don't have too many lures so most of my bass lures have caught fish. My muskie lures though.....are a different story.

fishing user avatarfishballer06 reply :

I know I have over 60 Rapala DT's just sitting brand new in a storage bin at my house. I buy whenever I find a good deal or whenever I can get my hands on a hard to find/discontinued color. If I had to guess, I've got over 200 lures easily still new in box just sitting at home, waiting for me to lose one of the current members of my tackle box lineup.

I dont have as many as you but I buy them on clearance too , sometimes for as little as 25 cents . If there is a certain lure that excels in a certain situation , I will buy several at retail, like a chartreuse Bomber Flat A which just kills bass on the wing dams and riprap along  the Mississippi river .

fishing user avatarHeron reply :

Everything I own, has been in the water while fishing.  Even some things that werent meant to.

But I have ONLY caught fish on ONE hardbait (thus far).    That being, the Bill Dances Dancin Eel.   No joke.

i don't know why, but i have no will power.  i open packages as soon as i get home.  i only have a handful of new in package baits and they are the backup of the backup.  i truly wish i could leave them in the package, would help me a lot when i go to trade or sell.

I´m just trying to recreate the look of BPS´ bargain bins.

For example: Risto Raps ( mainly ) at $1.99 a piece, man how can I refuse that ?  :Idontknow:

I am a creature of habit. If a Red Eye Spinnerbait caught a bass from a certain log in March thre Marches ago, I will toss it again. I have probably 80% of my hardbaits that haven't seen water. In the creeks up here, I toss plastics rigged weedless so I get them back.

I thought I was bad but after hearing some of you guys...I've done a pretty good job keeping Mr. Bait Monkey at bay.  Some of you guys could open up a small fishing supply store.

If I fished another 50 yrs, I wouldn't have near the stuff as some people already have, I don't buy a lot of tackle.

you need to stop spending money on your other hobbies and get some new bass fishing toys! :)

1. maybe 75%

2. probably 50% have not been used
