Gander Mountain? 2024

fishing user avatar5bass reply :

We have a Gander Mtn store opening here in the next month or so, how is their fishing tackle selection? Any better than a Sportsmans Warehouse? Dick's Sporting Goods?

fishing user avatarburleytog reply :

I've only been in one of their stores (Greensboro) and it doesn't hold a candle to the Sportsman's Warehouse in Roanoke.

High prices on everything from plastics to guns.

fishing user avatarJimzee reply :

I have two that are the same distance apart.  One in Washington, PA which caters more to muskie fishing.  The other is in Charleston, WV that has a great selection of bass tackle.  The one in Washington is much higher in price than the one in Charleston.  I thought the one in Charleston carried about as much bass gear as Cabela's.  Pretty good store, I just wish it wasn't an hour and a half away. :-/

fishing user avatarHawg Fan reply :

Ours in Arkansas is huge. I went to the Bass Pro Shop in Dallas and I would say our gander mountain has almost as much.

They have a GPS and Reel Wall

A Fly Fishing Zone

10 Combo Rod and Reel Turntable things filled with combos

3 Terminal Tackle Ilse

15 Foot Section of Bags and Tackle Boxes

15 Foot section of Line Choices

About 14 Isle of Lures and Plastics (All Bass)

Ilse are organized by Lure Type and Plastics

and Tons of those "On Sale" Table/Bucket things with Baitmonkey written all over it :)

Just to give you a little idea of what it looks like as far as fishing equipment goes..

fishing user avatarJake. reply :

Like Burley said, very high prices. Zoom Trick Worms "on sale" for $4.99, no thanks.

fishing user avatarMNBass16 reply :

we have alot of ganders up here in minnesota, for the most part they have a good selection on tackle but prices are a bit higher than our sportsmans warehouse. Good store to check out though, they offer some tackle that dicks and sportsmans dont.

fishing user avatarHawg Fan reply :

I guess our prices are that high here because we arent a very wealthy state..who knows. I usually shop at my local mom and pop tackle stores to help support them anyways.

fishing user avatarbmadd reply :

A great selection when compared to Dick's. However, the prices and the sales lack.

fishing user avatarDamien reply :

it all depends on the size and location of the store. i work at the one here in wichita and as of right now our store is the second largest store in the company and we barely compare in size to some of the BP and Cabelas but if you are looking for something we can sure get them in. We carry just about anything you want depending on the location of the store. One thing that i try to do and i hope other associates do is take in what we learn in the field and just share it with the customers and that is really how i got hired at gander cuase that is what we look for, experince. i have been in Bass Pro and Cabelas and and it just might be becuase i work there but i think gander is much better in the customer service department.

fishing user avatarMNGeorge reply :

Damien is right on in my opinion.  We have both Gander and Sportsman's here in St. Cloud.  In my experience, Gander is head and shoulders above Sportsman's when it comes to customer service.

fishing user avatarkms399 reply :

I used to work at the Minnetonka MN store and then moved to the Eden Prarie store when it opened and there was a huge difference in selection. alot of that had to do with the size. Minnetonka had like 23,000 square feet Eden Prarie has like 87,000 and there was a different manager and so certain things were ordered more. I would say that they carry as much as they can and it depends on their location. we never had downrigger stuff, duluth MN store had it for example.

fishing user avatarFish Man reply :

the one 30 minutes from me in salisbury maryland is great. they stay stocked, good prices and great service :)

fishing user avatarTpayneful reply :

five bass limit,

We have one in Fredericksburg that may be the worst run sporting goods store on the planet.  It apears that they only buy stock once a year and when it is gone........it is gone for a year.  They move left over stock on to empty hooks to make it apear that they have everything.  In February I was short on time and wanted to pick up a few filler spools of 15lb Pline Fluorocarbon line.  They didn't have any or any 15lb seaguar invisix either.  I drove to the store in Richmond and guess what......they didn't have any spools of either as well.  It will be a place to go and get some stuff but it will not be your GO TO place.

fishing user avatarWildbillb reply :

I worked for them while going to college.  It wasnt too bad then.  After I quit there they became a publicaly traded company and have been sliding down hill fast.  Prices continue to be significantly higher then any other place I purchase things; selection continues to dwindle and there is never anyone around to help you.  The one closest to me continues to pack in more and more stuff and stack it higher and higher.  If I ask them to order me something that they dont have you would think I asked them to move a mountain.

fishing user avatarhawgchaser reply :

The one in N Little Rock has a great selection. I have never noticed the prices being high but they will match prices so just tell them. They have always had what I needed.

fishing user avatarPondHunter reply :

I find that they have a better selection of fishing equipment than other stores in the area, Ft Wayne, and have alot of Musky and Pike tackle as well. The prices seem to be in line with local walmarts on the same items. When winter comes they stock alot of ice fishing gear too. There are a few things I want and cant find there, but for the most part its a good store.

GREENTOP would have it that place is like bass pro and cabelas combined and have great deals all summer

Ditto to the above. I've shopped both stores in Greensboro, NC. I did find another Dick's 20 miles away, and it made their Greensboro store look like a shoe box. An issue I have with the Dick's stores I've shopped is that so much of their merchandise is not priced and sales associates are a rare breed.

Gander- I've found them to be extremely slow to replenish "in season" inventory. Too, they are very slow to carry new products. I'm still waiting for them to stock Rapala's sub-walker. Lucky Craft - I found six baits. Staff is generally well knowledged.

fishing user avatarBud reply :

A little off subject but Gander Mountain just bought Overton"s.  That will give them a mail order business  again.   According  to Overton's web site

fishing user avatarMicro reply :

The Gander Mountain in Richmond (Glen Allen), VA is very nice.  Much better than any Dick's I've ever been in, but not quite as much as BPS.  I do like Gander because the one I go to has a large selection of All Star rods.

This concerns me. The Sportsmans Warehouse that opened up here in December is WAY behind on having any of the new 2008 baits. DT Fat's, Strike King Football Jigs and swimbaits, etc....and when they run out of something, it takes them getting in 3 or 4 trucks to get some more which is usually at least 3 weeks. I hope Gander handles these situations better than Sportsmans.

That's one thing I can say for Dick's is that when they run stock down late in the fall, when spring rolls around, they stock a lot of the new baits of the current year.

No kiddin? I was just in the Wichita Gander mtn. today buying reels.

I like gander because of their customer service but SW pretty much always has em beat price wise.

It just depends what part of town I'm on and what I'm buying

fishing user avatarfatmanslim247 reply :

It seems to me that i get better service at sportsmans, when im at gander they pretty much show you what your looking for but don't have any real good advice.  I go to sportsmans and I can get help with anything, I also found out about most of the clubs around here b/c one of the guys of the store is a member of one of them, they all seem to be real into their jobs.

Hey damien did you by chance used to work at dicks, in wichita?

fishing user avatarBadKarma42 reply :

When the GM opened here, it was awesome.  It is no longer awesome.

I have found the store to have a poor selection, be very cluttered, and they are constantly moving displays and sections.  It makes it difficult to navigate and find anything.

I tend to only shop there if I need a last minute item.  If I plan things out, I can get same type product at a cheaper cost at Wally World (although that place has its drawbacks).

I was recently informed by a co-worker that has a part time job at GM that the complany is not doing well financially.  It has something to do with opening too many stores too fast and too close.

The district manager was at our store the other day and did not like the shape of the store.  He gave the store manager 72 hours to clean it up and fix it.  The DM came back to check the progress and fired the guy.

Hate to put a damper on your excitement.  I was giggling like a school girl when ours opened.

If I am going to spend money on that stuff now, I would rather order on-line or road trip 45 mintues to BPS.

fishing user avatarAvalonjohn44 reply :

I love the Winchester VA Gander mountain, it is one of their bigger stores, and there is a ton of bass stuff - I spend about three hours a week in there wasting money... A few local fishing clubs meet there, and they have a pretty decent selection of high end lures (Bagley, LC) and reels and rods.  They run some pretty great Hot Buys pretty regularly, I just bought a ton of Stan Sloan Aggravator Spinnerbaits for 95 cents each... I have been to about 6 other ganders and they all kind of sucked.  Gander used to beat anyone's regular prices if you could prove to them they were better, don't know if they still do that.

I hear that Northern VA or the WV panhandle is getting a Cabella's pretty soon, so that will probably change my opinion of Gander, but for now, I love it!

fishing user avatarJ. M. Richardson reply :

There are a couple Gander mountain stores near my house in Southeast Wisconsin, but they are much higher priced than Cabela's (a bit of a drive but a much better selection) and sportsman's warehouse. I do recommend Gander Mountain's Black Magic Plastic Worms though - they make a good substitute for the high cost Senkos

fishing user avatarMaxximus Redneckus reply :

when i was a youngin gander mountain was my fav catalog ..doesnt GM have a deal with cabelas to not have a catalog anymore ???

fishing user avatarwgilfus81 reply :

I have to agree with BadKarma here. Was excited, now just irritated with GM> I had a goo dexperience just the other day with their return policybut this was really nothing outside what I would generally expect as far as customer service.

I would much rather drive to Bass Pro or order offline if I have the time. Gander has slowly but surely slid down my list of places to shop for outdoor gear, if it wasnt so close and Wal Mart such a horrible experience, I probably wouldnt shop there at all

fishing user avatarTeamBerettaGold reply :

Generally the Gander mountain where I go, sheboygan WI, has a decent selection, yes a little more $ than SW, but I can deal with it.  I was shocked when I went in there last friday to buy some more line, that the whole store was stocked to the brim.  Now mind you our fishing season opens next weekend and has a lot to do with this, but they are generally pretty decent about stocking, sometimes a little slow on the restock.  I was dumbfounded to find out that they had a nice selection of the new strike king stuff, red eye shads (in SS!) and some series 1xs-series 5's.  So the baitmonkey got the best of me and I ended up dropping a ton of money on stuff I didnt need, but them's the breaks I guess.  It seems to me that it all depends on the location of the store.  The sheboygan store carries a ton of lake michigan trolling gear, tons of it, and not a whole lot of bass gear, and a good bit of other useless fishing stuff for those things they call walleye, perch and bluegill.  So I guess what Im saying is, it varies from store to store what kind of tackle they carry.  But GM is leaps and bounds better then any Dicks I have ever been in, in WI.

fishing user avatarTpayneful reply :

Redneck, I went to Greentops too.  They don't sell Pline Fluorocarbon line.  They told me that they just don't have the space to add another line.  They only had one spool of 15lb Seaguar Invisix and I bought it but I needed two spools not one.  Life will be much better when the BPS opens this fall.

fishing user avatarFishTank reply :

I like the Gander Mountain by me. It has a good selection and nice staff to go with it. The only bad thing is that they are expensive. I can get most of the stuff I fish with at Dicks at a much cheaper price but there genearally is no one working in the fishing department at Dicks.

When I want real customer service I go to Gander Mountain and my local tackle shop but the best prices I go to Dicks.

fishing user avatarkms399 reply :

Gander will price match if it is local, no internet adds.

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

The fishing selection at Gander Mtn depends on the the location. I've been to one in Fredericksburg, Va and one in Ashland, Va. the Fredericksburg on was pretty weak, although the newer one in Ashland was VERY well stocked. They also had an exceptional gun selection for a retail chain.

fishing user avatarAvalonjohn44 reply :

Dan, if you liked the Ashland store, you would love the Winchester store.  Ashland was a little disappointing to me.

fishing user avatarMadGator reply :

I live in Madison, WI.  Up until a couple years ago we only had Gander as a big outfitter. Two Dicks stores were added a couple years ago. I'd say Dick's was a bit cheaper, and because the two stores (Gander and Dick's) were literally across the street from one another the Gander's were forced to lower prices.  Gander had a better overall selection, but both had the necessities.  I remember Dick's getting the first Chatterbaits a couple months before Gander though.  Now Gander has closed both stores (that was awesome, 20-40% discounts on everything, I am stocked for the season),  this weekend they are opening a new 90,000 sq ft store about 5 minutes from my house.  I will be there for the grand opening this weekend.  I believe it to be one of, if not the, biggest stores. I'll let everyone know how it is.

fishing user avatarMALTESE FALCON reply :

The closest Gander Mountain to me (about eight miles) is a big disappointment. About three years ago they down-sized their fishing department. To make things even worse, they are always out of stock on so many items, I try not to even frequent their store. I will say this, they do have a bigger selection than Dick's.

There is another store about forty miles from my house that has a MUCH bigger and better stocked fishing department.

I don't have a Sportsman's Warehouse near me, so I can't make the comparison.

Falcon

fishing user avatarbass wrangler569 reply :

The gander mountains by me have good selections but I won't buy from them. They are the single most overpriced outdoor store I have ever come across. I bought a gun from them this past winter (only because they were the only ones carrying the specific gun I wanted) and they charged me almost $100 over MSRP. Remington Core-Lokt ammo in 30/06 was almost $45. For those of you who don't hunt/shoot, you can get the exact same ammo for $20 at BPS.

fishing user avatarGone_Phishin reply :

Our local GM's have been closing out Yo-Zuri Hybrid for a little over $4 a 275yd spool.  Too bad I found out too late.  I did manage to get some 4lb though.

Last week I saw a very informative seminar at a local GM on nighttime bassin' by none other than Bass Resource forum member eyedabassman.   :)

good to know, thanks. I've been meaning to stop by there. It's much closer to me, too.

fishing user avatarlknbassman reply :

Better than Dicks by a long shot, no Bass Pro Shops or Cabelas that's for sure...

Have not been in the other store you mentioned but think of it as a tier 2 outdoors store where BPS and Cabelas would be among the top tackle wise along with speciaty shops.

fishing user avatarmike bat reply :

i love gander ... i go there when i have a few bucks to spend and want some baits ... you have to check the bins close ... the best buys are in the bargin bins ... ive found mans cranks ,, manns stone jigs ,,, baby boo jigs ,,, tungusten weights ,, and a ton of other great baits ... the manns cranks were like 1.89 and the stone jigs were a buck same as the baby boo jigs THE TUNGSTON WEIGHTS WERE 2.50 ,, i always check the bins ... most times i go to the bins first ....great way to stock your box  :)

fishing user avatarChode2235 reply :

We have Gander Mountain's on practically every corner here in MN.  Likely because I think they are headquartered here.  They are price competetive, and typically have a good selection too.

They do, however, have fantastic sales.  They must not every want to keep out of season inventory as they let it go for CHEAP.

I think they have some sort of relationship with Bass Pro, as the ones up here sell Tracker boats now...

fishing user avatarRattlinrogue reply :

We've had one here for a year now,and although it's no BPS it's got a pretty big selection of baits that I only hear about.Price is not that bad considering I'm buying baits that were totally unavailable before.Their Senko series is actually $1.00 cheaper than anywhere I've ever bought them before.

fishing user avatarBassn Blvd reply :

One just opend here in Palm Beach a couple weeks ago.  I wasn't impressed.  Prices were no better than anywhere else.  I asked the clerk behind the counter in the fishing section if they carried Yo-zuri fishing line.  His reply was  "Uh, I didn't know Yo-zuri made fishing line. Just lures."
