Fishing Glasses, What Do You Use? 2024

fishing user avatarTouchTooMuch reply :

Since I starting to fish everyday (my new motto is "I only fish on days that end in y") I decided I needed to get fishing glasses. I read some and read that polarized glasses work really well, so I went and bought a pair that berkley teamed up with strike king to make, they fit perfectly, polarized, and you can look at the sun without blinking. So, do you guys just wear regular sun glasses and my purchase was a waste, or do you guys wear glasses made for fishing?

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

I have a couple pairs of Coasta Del Mar sunglasses that I only wear fishing. They make a huge difference on what I can see on the water and my eyes aren't nearly as tired after a day of fishing. I do have a pair of cheap Berkley sunglasses that I wear everywhere else that are alright for fishing but they scratch up and break easy. I wouldn't say you wasted your money, anything is better than nothing, but a good pair of sunglasses are a worthy investment!

fishing user avatarjdw174 reply :

I fished for years with "cheap" glasses. They scratched at the drop of a hat and the optical quality was never there. I recently took delivery of a pair of Costas (Man 'O War model) in the "Green Mirror" tint. This was suggested to me by the factory as being good for use on both sunny and overcast days. Bought them in a progressive lens with readers built in and I can't say enough good about them. The colors are fantastic and the readers perfect. They were just a bit above "pricey", but they are fantastic glasses.

fishing user avatarGrey Wolf reply :

Invest in a good pair of polarized glasses not a pair of off the rack crap . It'll be the best investment you will make in buying fishing gear related products. B)

fishing user avatarFishes in trees reply :

I have to wear glasses all the time anyway. I got some polarized prescription sunglasses that I wear whenever I'm outdoors. I like them and I don't get headaches.

fishing user avatarJig Man reply :

Amber Costas for me.

Had cocoons due to bad eyesight (those that go over perscripton lenses), but recently invested in Oakley prescription sunglasses with polarized lenses. Best investment in a long, long time.

How did you like the Cocoons? I wouldn't expect them to compare to prescription "high end" sunglasses, but what did you think about them? I've been thinking about purchasing a pair of the cocoons, but wondering if they were worth it.

fishing user avatarRed reply :

I wear prescription glasses. I am also know to lose/break sunglasses pretty regular, therefore I use the $20 polarized "fits over" from Walmart. Couldn't handle it if I dumped a pair of $100 shades in the lake!

$10 berkley cheapos from wallyworld, can't beat the price.

fishing user avatarcollegefishing12 reply :

The cocoons were definitely worth the investment, as they have lasted for over 4 years. If you like to change lenses, that is another benefit of the cocoons because multiple lenses options can be purchased. However, I stuck with the traditional lenses and had no complaints. The only downfall would be that they do not fit "airtight" to your face, which allows for light to come in at the top corners of the lenses if the sun is shining over yours shoulders just right (not enough to be too upset about). I would not have purchased the prescription lenses for myself, but they were a birthday gift so I cannot complain. For those of you who have glasses and do not want to fork over the money for high-end prescription lenses, I give all my support to the cocoon company.

As for bumping an expensive pair in the lake, I would suggest picking up some fish cablez (sp?) or something of that nature. It will prevent you from losing your favorite $20 pair of glasses or $300 prescriptions!

Nothing will prevent flying jigs from close quarters that are known to take out lenses upon contact. That is my only true fear.

WileyX and Oakley lenses wont even scratch from that. I know first hand. I had a 1/2 oz football whack me in the eye when I was wearing my first pair of oakley's. That's the quality of great sunglasses.

However if you're looking for the best quality fishing glasses, it's definitely Costa Del Mar. I got the permit frames with the 580 glass green mirror lenses and man, its like the perfect view of the world! they fit my head frame so nicely, and ZERO light comes in around the edges. Its like turning nasty water into crystal clear water.

I too used to use berkely cheap-o's. I though they were good because I could see about 2 foot into the water. With the costa's I can see almost everything! However, if you dont want top shell out almost $200 for Costa 580's my next choice would be Wiley X. I like their frames better than the Oakleys but less than the Costa's. Thats and some come with a foam liner to block out all light from the edges. I think their lenses are a bit better and definitely more impact resistant than Oakleys. The Oakley's can still blow any cheap-os out of the water.

But I highly recommend Costa 580 glass green mirror for fresh water in your frame of choosing. Blue if you fish a lot of saltwater.

Glad to hear that the Oakley lenses won't likely break from a flyIng jig... Hopefully I never have to find out.

SolarBat Nocs... great glasses at a great price!!

fishing user avatartentimesover reply :

I wear prescription glasses all the time and decided to go with the cacoons some time back. I still don't feel like I'm getting the same vision quality as with prescription glasses only - but, as an added bonus, it definitively helps when gunning down the lake to keep the wind out of my eyes. I wear them on a lanyard so I can put them on and off quickly and the lanyard also helps hold them in place when I have them over my normal glasses.

I think it's safe to say that the guys here wear polarized sunglasses for use while fishing. So your purchase was not a waste, rather it was a good investment. They'll really pay off come springtime when the bass are up shallow and spawning ;)

fishing user avatarBryce C reply :

solar bat makes a great pair of sunglasses and they are affordable too....they also have a good warranty. Mossback lens is the way to go.

OAKLEY PIT BULL

Awesome coverage around all sides to keep light out they are great for my light sensitive eyes. Plus in this hot humid weather sweating lots & lots they dont slip a mm like they are stuck in place.

fishing user avatarcollegefishing12 reply :

I haven't found light to be an issue on traditional frames unless I am not wearing a hat (which isn't that often). Fit-over frames, like cocoons, have proven to be more difficult because the frame extends much wider than the bill of my hat. I have the Oakley Five Squared now and they block out the light well, and they are also one of the cheaper frame options that Oakley offers.

Johnathon Paul fit overs if you wear prescription glasses.

Me too. I'm pretty tough on sunglasses. When (not if, when) I break a pair or drop 'em in the lake, I can replace them without spending the price of a good baitcasting outfit.

Cocoons Aviators with copper color lenses , they fit right over my prescription glasses. They're great and reasonably priced. www.cocoonseyewear.com.

I have just been fishing with whatever sunglasses I have handy, whether it's a cheap $5 pair or some oakleys I wear daily. Would like to pick up some polarized glasses but I don't think there's any way I can justify the price of some costas or oakleys strictly for fishing. Considering buying a pair of the $40 Eye Surrender glasses since I've seen a few good reviews. Does anyone else here happen to have any?

Like a lot of people a hook, jig, egg sinker, etc in the eye is my biggest concern. When I was much younger I had a pretty bad eye injury and stayed almost a week in the hospital...talk about scary. I hate wearing a pair of expensive glasses in the boat because I worry so much about the stupid things I lose some of my fishing enjoyment  On the other hand, I really don't want to trust my vision to a $5 pair of wal mart specials. Wish there was a little better middle ground with higher end glasses.

i have been wearing costas for the last couple of years and really enjoy them. They really are top notch glasses. Good glasses make a world of difference on the water. Regardless what you wear, get a good pair of polarized glasses, your vision is worth the extra $'s.

fishing user avatarBIGfryFish reply :

I've been thinking about buying a pair of polarized glasses. But I don't know which to try, or even if would be worth the money.

I wear Rx glasses for distance. The glasses I have are transition lenses. They block out the sunlight good.

Are polarized glasses similar to transition lenses? If not which polarized glasses would work for me? When I don't wear my Rx glasses

I wear aviator style sunglasses. So the polarized glasses need to be able to fit over my Rx glasses.

fishing user avatarBASSclary reply :

You can get many of the popular brands in prescription through your eye doctor, and your eye insurance may pay for some of it too.

I highly recommend Costa Del Mar 580 glass with the green mirror. I cant see my jig alot of the time when i'm fishing and have zero eye strain. EVER. even when driving into the sun. Contrast is amazing with the green mirror too.

However, I've heard if you dont want so much contrast and want a more natural (color wise) looking world, go with the blue mirror. However the Blue mirror will be harder to see through in low-light conditions.

Costa even offers an aviator style sunglass.

However, polarized glasses don't transition. They're the lense color all the time, never switching between clear.

However, if you want to keep your regular glasses on, look into a pair of cocoons. I think you'll enjoy a pair of Costa's though, even though you have to switch between regular glasses and the costas a few times a day.

fishing user avatarCanga reply :

i found some cocoons on sale at a local store, they were like $25, and i was looking for some new sunglasses, no they are not the best, but they are pretty d**n good, especially for the price. i liked them so much i went back and got a pair with amber lenses so im covered all the time. they do let a little light in, but i wear a hat so it doesnt bother me too much.

i dont even wear glasses and think they are pretty nice!

Will the polarized glasses even work over my Rx glasses with transition lenses? If the function of the polarized glasses wont work over my Rx glasses, why bother?

All my Rx glasses have transition lenses. Will the polarized glasses do anything harmful to my Rx glasses?

_________

I'd probably try the cocoons if they would work for me.

fishing user avatarBASSclary reply :

Yes, polarized lenses will still work over your transitions, and no, the polarized lenses will not harm your glasses
