Favorite walking bait 2024

fishing user avataravidone1 reply :

Like most anglers I love topwaters.  My favorite type by far is a walking bait.   I've had a number of them over the years including some of high priced Japanese models.   I really like the Sammy from LC, but recently have returned to the original zara spook.  It has a great shape, walks the dog like it invented it (oh, it did) and doesn't cost a fortune.   the paint jobs may not be as exquisite as say a megabass but I think those elaborate paint jobs are more for catching fisherman than fish.

What cha tink?

fishing user avatarMIbassin reply :

Either a spook, or a bait I feel is overlooked which is the rapala skitter walk

fishing user avatarHog Basser reply :

I've been using the zara spook and a yamamoto tate pencil a lot this year.  I got the yamamoto because it was on sale 2 for $10 at DSG and has a really good look to it.  I have plenty of spooks in by tackle box and tried them the same day and had equal results.  Both great baits at a reasonable price.

I have this one duo realis I found in a tree that works really well. It has a sort of half sphere on the lip that makes it walk easier apparently and I've caught tons of fish on it

Definitely the easiest to walk out of any I have used. If you get it just right you can get it to walk sub-surface as well.

fishing user avatarJosh Smith reply :

I have a Skitter Walk I need to try.

The Spook has done really well for me, and I find the River2Sea Spittin' Image to walk very nicely as well.

fishing user avatarjitterbug127 reply :

Heddon spook jr in bone is my number 1 lure in my top water box.

fishing user avatarDan_the_fisher reply :

Zara spooks are my favorite in calm clear water because of no rattles, I add split rings and triple grip hooks to help hold the fish. In rough water I  go to the gunfish, r2s rover, showerblow, or a super spook

fishing user avatarrobster80 reply :

another i like is the duo realis pencil 110

nice sound if makes. caught my PB on it last year

fishing user avatarMumbly reply :

The KVD Sexy Dawgs are one of the easier walking top water baits to work...

they are so easy to learn on that's what i originally liked about them

fishing user avatarAfishionado reply :

My personal choice of topwater is the MirroLure top dog line of topwaters.. The main reason is because the finish is on the inside of the plug protected by clear plastic and you cannot wear it off.. These topwaters last forever and to this day I have never had one fail or break.. I have extensively fished for and caught big bull redfish on topwaters over the years and have thrown all of the well known topwater plugs at them.. Dead last on my list is a skitterwalk.. After a couple big fish the finish is hammered.. They are also prone to taking on water if the seam seperates which commonly happens.. Spooks are a little more durable and the badonk a donk by bomber is not a bad choice either.. In my opinion though the mirrolure plugs  cannot be beaten..

fishing user avatarEvan K reply :

My favorite walking topwater and popper are the same lure: the Megabass Pop Max. It's an amazing bait.

fishing user avatarJaderose reply :

Spooks and my new fave, the Bagley Knocker B.  I tossed this a couple times yesterday and wow......walks like a champ and looks great.  Just waiting on the top water bite now

fishing user avatarbuzzed bait reply :

megabass giant dog x in white pyton or black orochi....  they are costly, but it's hard to lose a topwater bait!  not saying i can't do it or it hasn't been done, but harder than most to lose!

A protruding sphere under the face of the Pencil 110 allows any angler, regardless of skill level to easily produce the classic "walk the dog" retrieve along the water's surface.

Seen a few come and go. The Spook & Zara Puppy are still here.
