Do you guys like the Scum Frog Popper better or Spro ,Horny Toad, ect.
I've been using the Scum frog Popper for years and for me it still out fishes Spro ,Horny Toad, ect.
Also you can buy 3 Scum Frogs for what one Spro costs.
Spro poppin frog eats it for breakfast.
The Scum Frog Popper is one heck of a fish producing frog. I have used it for many years and it has been my favorite for many many years, but I got to say I absolutely love the new Spro Popper. I won't be throwing out my Scum Frog Poppers anytime soon, I mean how could I with all the fish they have produced for me over the years, but they have officially taken a back seat to The Spro this season.
The scum frog popper rocks and I don't think the spro is any better, though both are good. I love fishing slop with both. The scumfrog sits lower in the water and has a more subtle action, while the spro walks the frog better and has a louder bloop.
I say an angler needs both.

I can understand you guys still using scum frogs because they're cheaper or for nostalgia's sake but seriously spro frogs (or even bobby's perfect or swamp donkey's) are lightyears ahead of scum frogs. The improvement in hook up ratio from scum frogs to spro bronzeye's is huge and they cast much better as well.
If I were to buy a Spro popper what color? or does color not matter?
Scum Frog colors?
QuoteIf I were to buy a Spro popper what color? or does color not matter?Scum Frog colors?
Natural frog, black, and a hi vis like chartreuse. Those three colors should cover just about any water conditions.

As I stated I do love the Spro Popper, but the reason to keep using Scum Frog poppers also is for me anyways, is that they flat out catch fish. They may be cheap, they may not have as good of hooks, they land upside down a lot of the time and they don't cast as well as the Spro, but they flat out catch fish. I am all for new and improved but kicking something that produces like the Scum Frog to the curb just does not make any sense. Like iceintheveins said, both.

For the Spro I have had good luck with Leopard, Midnight Black and rain Forest Black. Green Tree is also good at times.
For Scum Frog Poppers of which I have been using for years there is only two colors you need, Solid Black and Natural black/Green. These two colors have produced for me from IL to MN to OK to Texas, to Cali. This is not to say the other colors won't work for they will, but with these two I feel I am covered.
Scum Frogs Trophy Series have a MUCH better hookup ratio than Spros. Same goes for Snag Proof frogs. The issue can be resolved by bending the hooks ever so slightly and massaging the plastic body on the Spros.
Another trick with the Spro is to trim one leg shorter than the other to aid in a walk the dog retrieve in open water.
You can stuff the Scum Frogs with chunks of plastic worm for added weight.
SF Bigfoot is another favorite of mine, especially in scattered pads. Same for Deps Basyrisky. I like the smaller 65 size for those.
The real answer is, none is actually better than the other. They all work, and none are perfect.

I've been using the Scumfrog Popper for years and have no problems hooking fish. I think the Spro's have a poorer hookup ratio than the Scumfrogs. Their bodies are too hard. They do cast well though. Trophy Scumfrog is great but in the thickest stuff like bullrushes and tules, it's a little too soft and tends to get hung. I Love Snagproofs Bobby's Perfect for the real thick stuff.

3 colors needed...get a natural looking one,a chart.one and best color ever for any frog imo is WHITE!!!!!
Hay guys, I have another question, the Scum popper I would think is very hard to cast, they are very lite on a baitcaster or do you fish them on spinning gear? I think the new Spro popper would be better to cast with.
QuoteHay guys, I have another question, the Scum popper I would think is very hard to cast, they are very lite on a baitcaster or do you fish them on spinning gear? I think the new Spro popper would be better to cast with.
The Spro does cast much better but with a good rod and reel you can cast the Scum Frog NP. For the scum frog I use a 7ft mh baitcaster rod teamed with a Quantum Tour PT reel and 40lb braid and it cast just fine, not as far maybe but good enough. I have been throwing the Spro on a G-Loomis MBR 844c with the same make reel but with 65lb braid.
If distance is your main concern then yes the Spro will cast a mile. If your looking for the most strikes in a day, then the Scum Frog popper has a track record of doing such. Not saying the Spro can't produce the numbers but it will be a long time before it equals the numbers of the scum frog.
I can't hook up with nothing using a spro, and the things start taking in water like no tomorrow, I really don't know how you guys use them things.
The scumfrogs work great for me, alot softer so I can get a better hookset, and my hookup ratio is alot higher with them. Plus they don't take on water nearly as quickly as the spros I've used have. Never had any good results with spros... who knows.
bro scum frogs are awesome i use the rat myself, you can also cut a small slit in the belly of it and throw some bb's in it take a soldering gun and seal it backup. great for throwin it in brush. As far as color i like bubblegum

Oh, sorry I miss read your post, but actually any one of those colors should work for you, but if I did had to pick just one I would have to go for the Leopard. If there out of stock on the Leopard, Rain Forest Black would be my next choice followed by Midnight Black and then Green Tree.
As for comments on the Spro Popper taking on water, this has not been an issue for me yet as far as it being a real problem. Yes it will at times take on water just like any frog I have tried, but it still stays on top. I do love the Scum Frog also but I have had a few sinkers right out of the package. The Spro JR I have had the same thing from time to time, but so far no sinkers with the Popper and I really hope I did not just jinks myself. HEHE
As far as hookups go, I don't know what to say for so far the Spro Popper has been solid in that department. The Regular Spro Frog and JR are not as good as the Popper in this department IMO. In fact twice now I had blows up on the Spro Popper in which I was not paying attention and the bass hooked themselves. Can't get no better then that IMO. Actually I really believe it has more to do with the rod, reel and line one uses then the frog. Since I switched over to good 7ft MH to Heavy action rods, a high speed reel and heavy braid, hookups have not been a problem like in the past. Sure I still miss a few, but I would call that angler error, now that I use the right equipment for the job, instead of frog hooks error.
BTW, I hope I am not coming off as a Mr. Know all for I am not a Know All. But put a frog, jig or spinnerbait on the end of my line and I have total confidence in how I go about picking and using such for when I get into something I love to do like fishing these baits I become a student of the highest degree, meaning I have spent hours upon hours upon years trying to master these things simply because I enjoy and love to do such.
Put a Swimbait on the end of my line and I am in trouble for I don't have the hours put in I feel is necessary to be really good at something. So please don't take what I say about frogs as being cocky or the law or anything like that. I am just trying to help from my own experiences over 20 some years of bass fishing and sometimes I don't know just how to put things without coming off the wrong way.

Thanks for all the help! I have a tournament this Sun. so I wanted to try the frog bite. I was in a tournament last Sun. and a guy took second fishing the Scum popper. I did go and buy both the Scum popper and the Spo popper in Leopard. So if this doesn't work I am coming after YOU! Just kidding ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Thanks again I love topwater and I am pretty good at it so the frog poppers I should be ok with. I am useing a 7ft.6 in.Fenwick and a high speed Citca and 65 lb. braid Sufix.

No Problem. Cast that Spro out and let it sit a few. Walk it a little in place and let it sit some more. Walk, Walk and pop and let it sit some more until you get the rhythm the bass wants for the day. I have had many days where it's when the frog sits after the Walk and pop, where the bass just hammer it while it sits. If there super active walking it at a slow pace all the way back to the boat may be the best bet. I have had a few times also where I casted out and just let it sit while I grab a drink of Dew or light up a smoke, bad idea because if there's any sure way to get a bass to strike it's to not be paying attention. LOL
With the Scum Frog Popper, cast out and let it sit a bit. Give it a pop pop and let it sit. Pop pop sit until she strikes. The Scum frog will walk some to, but I have had better luck with the little pops. Also keep in mind that the Scum Frog Popper will without any doubt catch fish of all sizes. I have a lot of confidence in the Spro, but I have absolutely no doubt at all that if there's a fish there, she's going to hit the Scum frog popper.
Tournament secrets sort of because I am sure a lot of peeps know this. Sea walls can be killer spots, work the frog as close as possible to the wall. The very shallow end of docks, cast that frog under there, skip it as close to shore and under the dock as possible and work the frog there. Stumps the same thing, keep it in the strike zone as long as possible but being it's a tourney you don't want to waste to much time in one spot unless of course the spot is hot. Then of course you got the weeds. One Spot some seem to overlook is where the weeds meet the shoreline. I see a lot of guys working the outer edge and pockets within and followed them and caught the fish they forgot to try to catch way up shallow, I am talking so shallow you would not think a bass would be there.
One other tip I can think of off the top of my head is wind blow cover. here you can really walk and pop that frog hard followed by a pause. Seems the windier it is or the thicker the cover, putting a little more behind it does the trick. And whatever you do, don't set the hook right away, let them take it.
I have won and placed a few times with nothing but the frog, but like anything else, the frog bite is either on or off. Of course I tend to not give them much choice and will force feed them if I have to by keeping in there face and juicing the heck out of it with MegaStrike. If that don't work then I will move onto something else. Luckily I guess, I have never been skunked in a tournament with a frog. I say I guess because they have fooled me into thinking the frog bite was on and by the time I figured out they was just playing with me it's to late. LOL The hardest thing IMO while tournament fishing is knowing when to change up, weather that's lures, location or whatever. But hey that's what makes fishing fun. Good Luck Sunday!
Furbit, Do you fish any Zoom Horny toads or Sizmic type frogs or are you just a Scum Spro kind of a guy?
QuoteFurbit, Do you fish any Zoom Horny toads or Sizmic type frogs or are you just a Scum Spro kind of a guy?
I do use the Zoom and Rage, I also do like the looks of that Sizmic but have not tried it yet. I have one or the other tied on one of my rods at all times and do pick it up a few times threw out the day, but really 90 percent of my frog fishing is of the hollow type. Not that I don't think the toads will work as well, I just prefer the Hollow Scum Spro for I can change up how I work it much more so then a toad and I personally can skip the hollow frogs way better then I can a toad, getting it into places I can't with the toad.
There is however a couple times in which I pick up the toad rod first and that's when either night fishing or if there really smashing the toad early in the mourning. It also is a good choice when there's a good chop on the water, but the Spro does pretty dang well in the waves also. Nothing at all wrong with the toads, just for me I can do a heck of a lot more damage with the frogs simply because I can do a lot more different things with them them.
BTW: I have used the Space Monkey like a toad also and that thing can be killer at times also. In fact that thing looks so alive in the water I would not be surprised at all if a few state records will be broke with the Monkey. Not just on top but anywhere in the water.
I will let you guys know how I do on Sun. The weather is going to be good and I think they are done spawning or at the end of it. I hope to get some biggin's!

It is 2 30 and I am getting ready to leave. I love Delavan! I guide at night out there. The tournament is on Long Lake up bt Dundee. The other side of West Bend. See ya later!
Furbit, how did you do on Delavan? We had a bad tournament, the frog bite was far and few, I had two blow ups but they were small blow ups if that means anything! We did not place so that makes two bad days this year! :'( :'( > > >
The day started out good. We caught 6 nice largemouths in the 3 to 4lb range and two 3lb smallie's both on the Scum Frog Natural Black/Green color and Spro Popper Rain Forest Black color. For some reason I could not get them to hit the Leopard color Spro.
However, that was about in the first 2 hours there, after that we could not buy a bite. We even trying jigging from 10 to 20ft of water with no luck. Seen a lot of fish cruising, a couple of monsters at that, but just could not get the strikes, other then a few dinks, after the first couple hours.
Hey btw, whats the name of that lake that is on the left hand side of the road if your coming from Delevan to Geneva. is that Como? You can barely see it from the road, grrrrrrrr I can't think of the road name off the top of my head but its the main highway from Delevan to Lake Geneva. Man I can't believe I can't recall the name of the highway, it's 2pm and I think I need more coffee. LOL
Sorry to hear about the tourney. Them Wis lakes can be tricky. I never fished the lake your tourney was on but if its anything like Geneva or Delevan I know how it can go at times.

That would br HWY 50 and yes it is Como. Where were you fishing on Delavan? Maybe we can change some info on good spots on Delavan! I guide at night out there and last year I had a 7lb.4oz. and a guy I took out had a 7 lb two weeks apart.
Well I am no expert on Delavan, only fish it a few times a year and really do not know what all the areas are called but the first few came, well head out from the public launch and turn left and head to the shoreline off S. Shore Dr. From the first dock down to where the shoreline bends. Seawalls, docks and weeds between the docks is where we got the fish. It is also in this area where we tried the 10 ft to 20 ft deep water trying to stay just outside the heavy submerged weed lines. Hitting the edges with jigs. Although as you know one second your in 10ft of water then all the sudden your in 16ft only moving the boat a couple ft. So we did have some trouble staying on the edge, mostly because the Fish finder on the front of the boat was not working so who ever was on the back of the boat had to call out what was going on. Back seat driver so to speak.
Most of our catch however was the section of water past N.Shore Rd. Bridge area, where all the town homes are. North side past all the docks to the very back of that area. There are docks on the south side of this area, but the section we caught fish was just across from them where there are no docks. The waters only a ft or two deep in this area but the bass where either in the pockets in the weeds or buried right in the thick stuff right on shore. A lot of cruisers back in there and if you saw them they saw you and jetted out of site. Lots of bluegill beds back in there.
I would say most all the fish we caught where in no more then 2ft of water. We did get a couple skipping back under the docks but nothing to write home about. I am guessing if we would have spent more time in deeper water we would have caught more, but we really wanted to give the frogs a work out this time out. No body else out there was fishing as shallow as we where, in fact my partner said I bet these people out here think where from IL or something LOL, we are, but it was working for a time.
That is a pretty good drive for you from where you live! If you fish Delavan again I can send you to some real good spots and I would PM you the info. I would think the pads on the south west bay would be a good frog spot and the channel by the boat lanuch is great in the summer!
Nah, not to bad of a drive actually. I am only a few minutes from RT 47, just take that north and I am there in a little over 1 to 1 1/2 hr's as long as I leave before everyone else on the planet wakes up. Coming home is a different story with traffic and all but I kind of like the nice ride back with the a/c going in the truck to relax after being out in the sun all day.
As for the Pads, I suggested that very early on but my partner was being a stubborn donkey. He had one bad day of no fish there and trying to get him to agree to check it out again is like pulling teeth. Next time will take my boat and he won't have a choice.
Yes that area near the launch looks real good. We where planning on hitting that on the way out but ran out of time.
Should be back up there a couple times in mid July since the wife is heading south to visit her folks for a couple weeks. Any tips would be much appreciated.
