Yup i agree Muddy Cabelas has a lot of big name reels that are CABELAS EXCLUSIVES models only they sell not even the websites of said manufacturers have them. How do they do that ??? i have about 10 C5 garcia mag reels. Garcia site dont even list any magnetic reels besides revos .Bass pro does have better lure selection though online and instore
Sorry, I don't have enough idle time on my hands to compare the two. Besides, my new Penthouse catalog arrived today. Now that is some delicious looking bait!
Bet you were listening to the Rolling Stones singing YOUR JUST A MAMMARY while you were reading the articles

For the most part I think BPS is more geared to the fisherman while Cabelas is more geared to the hunter. I shop from both.
I would say that Cabelas fishing dept. is more multi species than Bass Pro, but hey BASS is Basspro's main business. You are corect about thier hunting you should see the trophy mounts and the gun selection at their Hamburg PA store WOW!!!!!!!!
i like the bps catalog better but i don't like that bps uses usps as shipping alot of the time...
I like BPS for fishing, but I can tell you their search engine SUCKS!!!!!
I typed in the exact name of a product one day and it wouldn't come up so I called the 800 number. The lady asked what the catalog number was and I told her I didn't have one on me, she spent 15 minutes thumbing through old catalogs until she found what I was talking about. She gave me the number and it came up, the funny thing is that the name of the product was exactly what I had typed in?? I asked her about that and she said she didn't know why it did that. I told her it's happened a lot and she said you know people tell me that all the time! I asked why they wouldn't take the time to make a better search engine it's the life blood on the on-line business and she was like OH WELL you gonn'a place you're order or what?!
So needless to say Cabela's got my business that day!!! >
agreed BPS is better for bass fishing, where cabelas is more geared to overall "outdoors" I shop from both, though!

I agree.
Agreed that BPS has better lures--That was their origional business
The stores are the same way Cabelas has 8' of spinnerbaits and BPS has a whole isle.
Prices are about the same though

Muddy, I was an avid hunter in New Jersey and a frequent flyer at Cabelas.
Today I rarely hunt anymore, so it's all about fishing.
As a result, I've all but fired Cabelas, and it's due to their limited fishing inventory.
I'm a One-Stop shopper, and that's not possible at Cabelas.
I can get everything I need from BPS and TWH (rod & reels at Reeds).
So, if I'm not in the market for Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft
I have no further use for Cabelas ;D
Roger
I will not shop via catalog with BPS anymore so I do not even look at their catalog when it comes, that said Cabela's has always done me right.
Out of the two, I find the BPS more geared towards us Freshwater fisherman, although I make purchases from both companies. 95% of the time I make those purchases after doing searches on their web sites.
Their catalogs do make great reading material while in the executive lounge. Unfortunately, both send way too many catalogs. One Master Catalog from each would be fine for the whole fishing season.
I think it is a little different. I think Cabelas is more geared toward the Northern/Midwest angler, where Bass Pro is more geared toward the Southern angler.
I find more stuff in Cabelas that I like, of course I am fishing the 10,000 lakes of MN and not the big reservoirs of the South. We have very different needs and fishing styles. Not that different enough, but we do have niche needs which Cabelas fills better.
For instance people were/are screaming that our beloved Lindy tackle company was bought by Spro.
In Orlando there's a Bass Pro Shop Outdoor World.... they have every lure and reel under the sun. BUT, they have the worst rod selection I've ever seen. I don't know if their catalog is any better, but it couldn't be any worse.

We don't have a BPS here yet. I did make the trip to the Cabelas in Reno thinking it was going to be something special. I found that the store caters more to the hunter than for fisherman. It was ok but my local Walmart has a better fishing section.

I like Cabelas I am far from an expert but bought from them 4 times very happy each time with tracking of package and customer service

The site has lots lures, hooks, etc thats pretty much what I have purchased oh yea and one reel .
Just got my 3rd catolog from both of them yesterday. BPS sent their Bass Book, and Cabelas sent me their boating and Marine catolog.
Back to RoLo's post about Yo-Zuri Ultra soft line....I even called BPS and told them to start carrying it as well as regular...FAgedabodit! They got their heads in a dark stinky place unless its Strike King stuff. >
I personally dont use either to purchase from, but I do get there catalogs to look at stuff and help ease the winter pain of Cabin Fever.
I just ordered almost every fishing, boating and ATV catalog available from BP, Cabela's and a few bait company's. I am an internet junky and use it as much as possible to research, purchase etc. But since I don't have a laptop I need to restock the library for the fishing season ;D
I ordered Cabela's a few days ago and received the Master Fishing, Flyfishing and Saltwater cataloges yesterday.
I am not devoted to any store, local or not and will mailorder as much as possible to save money. As an example, neither Gander Mountain or Academy have Sufix Braid locally so I ordered it from Cabela's this week.

I was thinking the same thing, what's funny is my wife has ordered from there and they will send both of us issues. That let me know that they have way to much money. So BPS, please send cash not extra mags.
I live in Deep South East Texas and buy as much of my fishing supplies as I can from Cabela's as I like thier customer service much better. I do agree that BPS has a much bigger selection of lures. However, a lot of them are nothing that I'd be interested in spending money on.

The Hamburg PA cabela's is awesome. I like the Bass Pro catalogue better than the cabelas catalogue though. I go to BPS for all my fishing stuff and cabelas for hunting stuff.
I actually wish they both did a much better job with their on-line stores and they save a few thousand trees a year. I know the next question is how to get people to go to their site- take their mailing list -send out a post card- put something creative on it like - "use this card and shipping is free" or words to that effect and people would go to the site.
It would be interesting if not shocking to know what they spend on all the paper, ink and postage.
BPS catalog is WAY better than Cabelas! The reel description in Cabelas didn't even tell you how many bearings are in their house brand reels! How can I compare when their descriptions are a fraction of what you get in a BPS catalog?
Actually if you click on buy reel there are boxes for each reel. They tell you bearing count, line capscity and spool size and sometimes inches of line per crank FOR ALL REELS.
They have the Pflueger President, Trion and some Shimanos and Diawas not to mention almost the complete fenwick and all star lines and Bas Pro doesn't
Muddy,
I keep trying to click on the Cabelas catalog in my hands and nothing happens
OK BPS CATALOG Go to the Pflueger Baitcating page in the catalog: No Summit, No Patriarch , No President, No Trion, Go to THE Fenwick Page in BPS Only the HMG. ot to the All Star page: Only 3 rods available,
NOW go To CABELAS CATALOG : SAME AREAS HERE IS WHAT YOU WILL FIND"
Pflueger: President <Trion<Summit<Patriarch<
Fenwick< Eagle GT<HMX,<HMG<Techna AV and the Classic all world reissue
AllStar: Instinct<Team IM10's<Platniums< Classics and the ASR"S
Now lets turn to the Cabelas Brand Reels; Oh whats this, PRODIGY and ZX ( BEARING COUNTS) maybe yours is a misprint
Hows that ;D
It was a joke.
The last Cabelas catalog that I got had only a tiny square for a prodigy reel with no bearing count. I looked at it specifically to compare it to BPS reels. I can't put my hands on it at this moment because I threw it away after I looked at it. If I missed it I am an idiot but the section was tiny compared to what BPS provides for each of their house reels.
Ultimately I feel like the Cabelas catalog is from Mars for a Northern customer that may fish for LMB, SMB, Pike, Muskie or something else. The BPS catalog and company seems just right to me and my tastes. Maybe that is because I reside in a southern state and the focus of BPS is LMB.
It is just my opinion and that is worth the price paid. Nothing.
Hey T I know that thats why I posted the ;D on it Ehwn I am at work my little green guys can't get past the filter, I have no idea why.
I thought the click remark about the cataloug was very funny
Thats the exact reason why I like the Cabelas offerings because I am up north. Go to the prodigy page in the spring catalog gives the count. I like BPS house reels better than the cabelas line up. Cabelas just carries a lot more of the brands i use. I wish they would start carrying a lot more of the Okuma Line, I would love to try their stuff also. I like good solid stuff that fits my budget, I hope RW and Raul don't read this
Muddy,
Glad I didn't step on your crank! Actually my wifes name is on the Cabelas catalog! She is the only one that has purchased anything there! I think she got it from her daddy who is a big time hunter!
It looks like all of my BPS reels are really Floooooger reels like yours! They even sound funny like the way people from the north talk!
I shop Bass Pro because their is one in my town so I don't have to pay shipping. Both are close as in prices for the same or similar ideas, but by the time I pay for shipping from Cabelas it is cheaper for me to go to my local Bass Pro.
