What fishing purchase are you most ashamed of???
I hate to admit, but about 2 years ago when I first started, I saw one of those 30 minute Bill Dance commercials, and the next time I went to BassPro, I purchased my very own Dancin Eel....Used it once, then felt like a dum dum.

Nothing.
I love it all.
It is all part of my treasures.
Storm soft swimbaits, I loved the way they always pulled to the left or right and would never track straight. I got lots of casting practice out of them since I never caught anything on them.
The flying lure, a small tube that would go backwards after a pull. And the walking worm!
The flying lure was the bomb on nesting fish.

QuoteFourbizzs' Old Boat!!!!
Lol whats the story there?
The Dancin eel has to be the all time under achiever. the bait was extremly advanced for its time. It had a ton of action and was just an all around ingenious bait. However it didnt produce. I have theory. Way back when I used to stock ponds I would stock bull frogs. The bass would eat the small bullfrogs but they would not eat the tad poles. Even when I had bass in aquaruims they would eat them and then spit them out. I think they must excrete some type of bad taise as a defence mechanism. I think the dancin eel mimicked a tadpole to the tee. The problem was bass dont like to eat tadpoles, hence the Dancin eel never lived up to its potential
I was at a hunting/fishing expo, and a guy at a stand was selling items that he made at his tackle shop. I had only been fishing for about a year and didn't know too much. He made his own crankbaits and they were pretty cheap at $2 apiece. I snapped up every color that I thought I would need. Needless to say they were not good. I still keep a couple in my box for when a buddy asks me for a lure, either to ensure I catch more, and I won't care if they lose em'. Now if it isn't a Bandit, rapala, LC, and SPRO I don't touch it. I'm not knocking anyones craft or hobby, and if you know a guy that makes Quality cranks I might give them a try, but I'll be wary.
QuoteStorm soft swimbaits, I loved the way they always pulled to the left or right and would never track straight. I got lots of casting practice out of them since I never caught anything on them.
I have a bunch of those too, in many different colors. They have been on my peg board for a couple of years because I do not use the ones that in my boat. I think I will leave them out of the boat this year.

Wow, this bait has put some quality bass in my boat!
Anyone remember the Burke talkin frog? Made a battery powered croaking noise when it got wet. :
I'm surprised the SK King Shad was mentioned, I've caught some nice 4 & 5lbers on this bait along with a 39" Northern Pike.
Back when the first LP reels came out in the early 80's, I bought one of the first Bass Pro Shops "branded" reels. It was an LP reel made by Quick. Quick at the time was most noted for making Saltwater equipment.
The first reel was broken in the box.
The replacement broke on the first fishing trip.
I refused another replacement and traded up to a Garcia. I also swore off BPS reels for quite a few years after that.
Chalk-up another one for the Storm soft swimbaits. I can't catch a cold with those things.
Falcon
Storm Kickin' Slab. Looked to be the perfect bait for springtime bass feeding on small 'gills. great finish and looked to be well made. I bough 4 of them 2 years ago. Still trying to get one to run straight.
If I ever do, lookout!
A Castiac(sic) swimbait that I paid 18.98 for back in 1991. Have never had a bite on it and it seems to show up every time I open one of my Plano boxes. Like it moves around during the night so I will see it and be reminded of how wasteful I was.
X2 ON THAT CASTAIC
5 lb. muskie spinnerbait.
had a spinner the size of a vw hubcap with a trailer that looked more like a raccoon's tail.
and even tho the closest muskie to me is right at 1100 miles away, at the time, it made perfect sense for me to have that bait.
Helicopter lure. Though i did catch a rockbass on it in a creek behind my parents house.
Flying lure was awesome. Pitch it at the edge of some pads and watch it glide in. id like to have some about 9-10 inchs long.i think it would be sweet
"*ALL TIME LOW PRICE! GET THEM BEFORE THEY FLY AWAY AND YOU MISS THAT BIG FISH!*"
It has to be those bargain bin generic hard baits I got at Wally world. They had lovely finishes but they also possess the action of a wet piece of kleenex.
I don't think flying lures are all that bad. I think they would work pretty well to provoke a strike from inactive or post-cold front bass. I do hate infomercials as much as the next guy, however.
I recently purchased some P-Line CX Premium to try. The_Natural
recommended it and I trust his judgement. I bought #6 for spinning
tackle, but the line that was meant to be suggested was higher test
for baitcasting, I think?
Anyhow, after I spooled the line up, I tied on a jig to test it
out. The line broke when I pulled the knot taunt. I then wrapped
some around both hands...and broke it by hand! What was really
dumb, I got so mad I threw it away instead of taking it back!

QuoteQuoteFourbizzs' Old Boat!!!!Lol whats the story there?
I bought his old P.O.S. that had been sitting in a field for a year or so. It was in pretty bad shape. Rusty and bent trailer. The carpet was coming up, so he put about 200 staples randomly in the floor to try to keep it down, but It just tore around the staples, so you really couldn't walk on it without shoes. Just a general overall money pit. I fixed it up and it's a bass fishing machine now. The worst part is I now have a boat so I have to take him fishing all the time. :
I had all the TV baits. Banjo minnow worked great for me, so did the flying lure. The hellicopter lure was pretty bad. Recently I bought some of the Bass Professor plastic snakes. Never used them, but I wish I could have that $ back. LOL
I know some of y'all mentioned the helicopter lure, But a couple years ago, opening day for Lg.mouth, Harsens Island,Mich (in Lk St clair) in the flats in the pencil reeds.. That lure totally slayed em. The whole week we were out there we just killed em. We even had guys pull over to us and ask what we were using cause it was like every cast we had one. We told them what we were using and they laughed and said " no, seriously..) They didnt believe us.....2yrs later, same place, same time, same lure. NADA. We couldnt even pay for a bite. We were sighting them, but to no avail. The senko came out and...whamo, bass galore....

the Live Pointer so I bought two more when I found them on sale!
Man, I have never fished them and they'll probably never get wet.
I actually did pretty well with the Dancin Eel, big fish too. I caught some on that old craw also but the biggest problem with that one is the treble hook snagged when you kept on the bottom where it needed to be. I am not doing as well on the Ika as I think I should but I am going to keep working on it. I guess my biggest failure has been the Rat l Trap, they just don't work for me, I do ok on other lipless baits so I can't figure it out. Sometimes I think we just don't get it right and it is not always the lures problem. But when buying fishing tackle I guess we have to remember the old point of law, buyer beware, because there is a lot of junk on the market.

I agree; it could just be the part of the country that dictates whether or not the fat ika is effective. Here in WA senkos are deadly. Strangely enough I've caught more & bigger fish using the 4" senko than the 5". Maybe worms just don't grow that big here in WA???

Wow, surprised to hear you guys didn't do any well with them. I don't really throw them in real weedy areas, its a bait I do well with in open water, or sparse cover, like a lillypad patch here and there. I fish it backwards. I'll cast it and let it sink to the bottom, then give it around a 4-5sec pause, while watching for the line to pick up and slowly take off. If nothin happens I'll give the rod a good upwards jerk to get the bait to fly upwards (I try not to make it go as far as the surface though), and then I'll let it fall and pause and just repeat the process. Sometimes instead of one hard jerk after letting it pause that is, I'll give it 2-3 jerks. The fish tend to pick it up when its either paused, or falling.
I have done pretty well with this bait. And I love the look I get from other fishermen who never seen the bait before, they look at the backwards ika on my line, and then look at me with that "huh...?" look. That is until I pull a bass up infront of em . Colors I use most are greenpumpkin and watermelon, if its overcast or muddy water or dusk I use black/blue flk.

Yeah...Yozuri Hybrid and Pline CXX would be the only suitable lines in the 6lb class I would bass fish with...they are both very underrated lines with much higher than advertised breaking strengths. CX premium is VERY thin and pretty true to its rating. I've got 6lb CX Premium on mine and my wife's crappie rigs...there is no way you could bass fish with it...holy crap! I should have put a disclaimer on it knowing what you normally use 8-). The 10lb CX Premium is the same diameter as 6lb Yozuri. So basically fishing 6lb CX Premium would be like fishing with 2lb Yozuri Hybrid . I guess I'm glad you threw it away before you lost a good fish on it. Oh well...I'll still get you to try something else 8-)
I use 15 lb. CX Premium and I absolutely love it. Its got a really small diameter and handles like a dream. You can pull a boat with that stuff.
QuoteI use 15 lb. CX Premium and I absolutely love it. Its got a really small diameter and handles like a dream. You can pull a boat with that stuff.
The 15 and 20lb are very popular lines here in Texas. The 15lb has the same diameter as 10lb CXX, and lots of guys use it as their 'all-around' line. RW needed the 10lb CX premium on his spinning rig...6lb is suicide :-X
I don't now if I am confident enough to throw 6 lb. line for bass anyhow. That takes a special kind of person for sure. 8 lb. is the lowest I go and still feel comfortable . Sometimes I wonder if its strong enough.
Alot of you will disagree but id say the berkley triline sensation - I just dont like it one bit - Read my post in Shimano Product Support for more detials.
Mine is a little different but plenty stupid. I had never used a computer untill about six months ago, being a hardheadrd ol fart. Anyway, I bought two BPS Extreme rods off Ebay for about $20.00. I thought I had made a heck of a deal untill My daughter pointed out they had about 6" broke off and retipped. I didn't read the discription part.
Worst purchase would be buying my girlfriend a fishing pole...first cast, both treble hooks from the crankbait dug deep into my thigh, that was fun getting them out.
Other than that, Berkley vanish, Berkley Gulp, and the chatterbait.
I vote the Storm Swimbaits too. My wife says my Mustang inflatable PFD is money wasted. Haven't fell in since I got it. ;D

Several people chose the Storm swimbaits. Try fishing them on the bottom like a jig, they may prove worth the purchase.

Berkley Vanish, Viscious Flouro Fence Wire, Gulp stinking minnows, just about anything in the .99 box at Wal-Mart, which I frequent, and these 9" FLW brand "things" that had a fish type body with googley eyes and a huge grub type ribbon tail.
Luck ''E'' Strike Bass Magic Swimbaits. You have to burn them to get any action. And they smell like a chemical factory. Never caught anything on them

In my opinion the $.99 cent box rules. At least the one here is O.K. they had some YUM tubes that are pretty good, they also had some crawbugs too.

I did a search on this site for "banjo minnow", and didnt find much at all, So hoping this is not another shot to the dead horse SO I ask you: Does the banjo minnow have a better ability to catch bass than what we all are used to using whether its a senko or crankbait?, I saw that d**n infomercial again this a.m. then remembered my buddy gave me the banjo set a year ago (i totally forgot i had them, never used them) Thx for any feedback on the banjo, and sorry if this is a repeated topic.

I don't remember the name of it, but it was the yellow Kevlar line. That crap sucked! I admit that I did buy the helicopter lure and did catch a 4 lb bass using the white one as a topwater.
Actually, the dumbest thing I ever bought was a scale. All my fish got smaller after that.

Yeah, it's odd how that works.
"Actually, the dumbest thing I ever bought was a scale. All my fish got smaller after that. "
HAHAHAHHAHA go to your nearest volcano and throw that scale in there and sacrifice it ..
I have to admit some of the Storm swimbaits as well. Also, a selection of
odd jerkbaits, and some assorted plastics. This year, I plan to take some of that stuff and throw them into the nastiest, gnarliest areas I can find, hoping to lose them and lighten my load. With my luck, that would be the stuff I'd never lose. ;D
How about the Color selector. Not a good buy!
I'm surprised that so many people are mentioning the storm swimbaits. The 3 and 4 inch swim shads in the pearl and shad colors are some of my best producers. I will admit that I bought a pack of the 5 inchers in perch that I haven't caught anything on so far, but I remain optimistic that they will produce some bigguns in the right situation.
My dumbest tackle purchase was probably when I was 12 or so, and first started getting into bass fishing somewhat seriously. I would read articles in bassmaster and other magazines and get convinced that i needed a separate combo for every lure in my box. Being 12, i didn't have a lot of money, but I spent my birthday money on 4 combos from kmart for about $20 each. I actually still use and like the ultralight i got back then, and my girlfriend, who is new to fishing, uses the zebco 33 i bought (when the magazines talked about baitcasting, i thought it meant the same as spincasting, it was a couple years later that i realized the difference). But other than those two things, all the other stuff got upgraded within a year or two when I had a little more money to work with and realized quality>quantity. These relics of my fishing past now collect dust in the corner of my bedroom.
Dumbest purchases for me are all the things I haven't used yet. Sitting at home collecting dust and have never seen water. Second dumbest purchases is not catching bass on baits that have seen water.
Every week I go fishing, I use the same color green pumpkin senkos and shallow cranks. I manage to do well so I haven't really tried any other baits. So what is the problem here? I continue to buy crankbaits because they look so pretty! Less than 25% of my stuff have been put to use.
The Banjo Minnow worked for me. Just hated the hassle you had to go through. I also did OK with the Flying Lure. Both were gifts from my grandmother who got caught watching late night infomercials.
The Helicopter Lure was a different story. <--- My dumbest purchase.
QuoteLuck ''E'' Strike Bass Magic Swimbaits. You have to burn them to get any action. And they smell like a chemical factory. Never caught anything on them
I love these things!!!!!!!!!!!
Probobly the most durable soft swimbait ever!!!!!!!!!
The Banjo minnow and that shad swimbait from NGC sports. Had some decent action but it was freakin junk, built horribly
pflueger echelon spinning combo. got and thought wow! smooth spinning reel and light rod for 40 bux! tip broke off rod 3rd cast, and the reel sqweeks and wobbles so much now you would think i was strangling a rat. that and falcon flipping jigs. cant catch a single fish on em. oh well. they snag easy enough. ;D
I'd have to say that some of the most hated things on here have treated me pretty well. I bought a banjo minnow kit long ago and have caught quite a few bass on it. I've never used a slug-go so maybe they are comparable. I've had the kit for years so I'd say it has paid for itself.
I also like berkley gulp! products as well as storm soft plastics. The one that is shaped like a grub on a jig head (I can't remember the name of it) has done really well for me.
My worst purchase is allowing the baitmonkey to make me buy crankbaits. I've only ever caught one fish on a crank and yet I have a ton of the things that have never been casted.
The $400 I just dropped on *** at 1am, even though I'm broke? :-/
They lure me in with this college discount, then the baitmonkey strikes! At least now I have a PFD.
what is the college discount and how do you get it?
To all you haters of the chatterbait... Have you tried fishing them at night? I definitely had great results with a pure white one (i mean I had outfished my buddies like 10:1 and was pulling a bass outta lily pads in a cove like every 3rd cast for like 15 mins... one of my most memorable fishing experiences ever ;D)
But yea, those storm swimbaits, I mean they def look good with that holographic finish in bluegill which are the primary baitfish up in the ponds and lakes i fish but never got ONE with em. Could never get em to run true either. At least now i know what NOT to buy anymore
I can't say I've ever bought anything junk. Closest thing that comes to dumb is some cheap garlic&salt fish attractant spray... :
