Hey Studs,
Happy New Year to all aboard!
Been a while since I checked in, but was finishing up a 30 yr dream of returning to college and I just graduated from UAB Dec 18 with HONORS!!!????????
Anyway, a good friend of mine has been blowing my phone up with pics of some fat spotted & large-mouth bass he's been killing a on black & pumpkin-seed baby brush hogs.
Been tossing them on 14 lb mono, 1/8 oz bullet lead, 3/0 Eagle Claw EWG worm hook...pitching & swimming em around brush piles, lay-downs, stickups...etc.
Mostly 3-4 pounders on an average, although he swears on his pappy's grave he lost a 12 lbs fishing who just flat straightened out the hook!????????
I told him, "that was either a catfish bro or the mental residual from yer Flower Child days!"
He grudgingly admitted to soaking a few in cheese/blood scent & catching a few whiskered fish for table fare.????????
BTW...what has been you guys experience and thoughts concerning, "ye ole baby brush hog?"
It's a staple in my boat. Catches not only numbers but good quality fish as well. Good price, good color selection, and fairly durable also. Watermelon/purple flake with the tails dipped in chartreuse JJ's is one of my go to colors.
Thanks Bluebasser86!
Any particular outlet that has a good selection of colors and so forth that you buy from?
How well do they do in the winter?
Academy sports here has a really good selection of the colors I like for a good price without having to go online. I do fairly well fishing them on a shakyhead during the winter.
Love em! Caught my PB on one in August!
Was looking around on Academy's website this evening.
Just picked up some Senko 3 inch/5 inch from Wally World & E-Bay and trying the Yum Dinger 5 inch as well.
Decided I try the #297 & #305 colors in the 3 inch & Red shad in 5 inch.
On Yum Dinger I'm hoping for decent return on Green Pumpkin/Chartreuse tail.
This will be 1st time trying wacky rigging after all these yrs!????
I've only used the full sized ones, and always have a few in the box.
Mike
Probably one of the more popular soft plastics out there. Cast, flip, pitch, all work. I like darker colors the best
Straightened an EWG hook?
Academy: Watermelon Neon, South Africa Special, & Sprayed Grass
Aint never caught a single fish on a full size!
Around here, I think the baby BH is more popular than the regular. Fish however you like. It's even good on a C-rig. On the Finesse side of things, we fish the tiny BH on a mushroom head jig in spring a lot.
I use them a lot in the summer.
I have tried other brand creature baits and the full size brush hog. The baby brush hog out fishes all of them.
@ReggieT I graduated from UAB earlier this decade, myself.
I’ve had some success using a black or a watermelon candy baby brush hog.
Where are y’all usually fishing at?
I use a lot of baby brush hogs. Had really good luck on several colors. I have caught a few on the brush hog. I tend to use them more in dirtier water. As for selection BPS has more of the colors than most places. They will also cost you more there. You can check Tackle Warehouse website. they have a lot of colors.
Texas rigged baby brush hog in watermelon red flake has caught more fish for me than any other bait.
Fish them all the time. One of my favorite creature baits. One of my largest bass I’ve ever caught was caught on a green pumpkin baby brush hog
Baby brush hog is pretty good versatile bait, I use them on light stand up jig head, light weight Texas rig and dropshot. I like black blue emerald and CA 420. This year I ordered a few more color to try out South Africa special, don’t tell @Catt. I caught a lot more on baby compare to full size, but at night the full size one is great.

Alrighty & Congrats!
Fish a lot around Elk river, Swan Creek, Tennessee and a bunch creeks & backwaters.
I'm originally from Limestone county and knew the water real well...been here in Birmingham for about 13 yrs now and still don't have a good handful of fishing spots!????
What size & type jig head or set-up are using on the baby b hogs?
Any particular structure you target?

*Good tip Team9nine ! I have tried the Tiny BH on a drop shot (with marginal success) - time to thread a Tiny BH in GP color on my 1/16th #2 size hook mushroom heads attached to my Ned rig outfit .
Sprayed Grass...amazing color for all conditions. Swing jig head.
I use them quite often, they are good TX rigged or used as a jig trailer. I use either Watermelon seed, junebug or black with red flakes.

Usually use a War Eagle stand up in 3/16 or a Z-Man mushroom finesse in a lighter weight. Maybe 1/15 or 1/10? I like to skip them under docks.

Hmm...been hearing good stuff about the mushroom jigs especially for the hellgrammite lures.
Are those 1/0 size hooks...I'm a tad rusty on this stuff! lol????

What are my thoughts?
I think you just let the cat out of the bag.
Questions for Reggie: Are the tails dyed chartreuse? Did you put any JJ's Magic or MegaStrike on your baby brush hogs?
These baits are outstanding in many conditions and I use them exclusively on a local river where they really produce a lot of strikes. I throw them on 1/16 or 1/8 Provider jig heads.
Oh well, the secret has been told and that is why we come to this Forum to learn from each other.
Now everyone go out and get some Zoom Baby Brush Hogs with the chartreuse tails and have some fun.
Thanks for sharing, Reggie.

He didn't "specifically" mention chartreuse dyed tails, BUT some pics of em---ALL the tails look pretty exotic????♂️! LOL
I've yet to use any attractants on a lure...although I'm open-minded for sure.
Is it that noticeable of a difference?
I see I really need to scale back my jig head size...
Thanks fer the feedback Sam!
Green Pumkin Baby Brush Hog with a 3/16oz bullet weight is one of the best lures I have ever used in 30+ years of bass fishing. I have caught 1000's of bass on this setup over the years. If you are looking for chart tails they make a GP with Chart tails and if you cannot find any I will sell you some.

Hey Thanks Allen.
Let me see what I've got stuffed away and I may be giving you a holler.
Pretty sure I could use Chart tails for sure.
BTW...what kinda cover are you tossing them into?
Texas rig baby brush hog has put many fish in many boats for years. BTW I'd go get in his boat if I were you since he's calling????

Attractants may or may not improve your hooking success.
In Dr. Keith Jones' book, Knowing Bass, Dr. Jones tells us that bass do hold onto baits that have positive scents:
Number of Strikes
Bait Without Scent With Scent
Crankbait 22 44
Lure Retention Time
Bait Without Scent With Scent
Crankbait 0.4 Seconds 0.9 Seconds
Scents on Softbait Retention
Most strikes on soft baits were held onto for 6 seconds with scent on the plastic.
Dr. Jones discusses molecule size and that some scents have molecules too large to pass through the bass' receptors.
It does not matter what Dr. Jones found out or what others say. It boils down to confidence in your technique, bait, and if you believe scent will help the bass locate your bait and then hold onto it longer so you can feel they have it and can set the hook.
Give scent a try and you decide if it makes any difference.
Also, to note the various baby brush hog color options (along with all the Zoom color options and styles) check out this web site.
Look up #42.

Been trying to for about 5 yrs...he'll disseminate fishing info galore.
I've tried bribing this dude with gas, food, liquor, $$$$ and everything short of snuggling up with him!!!????????
But, HE NO TAKE ME FISHING!????????
Never thrown the baby but have had a ton of success on the brush hog. Texas rigged on a 3/0 or 4/0 in green pumpkin. Generally bank fishing throwing into and around shallow cover. Have probably caught the most fish using this method.

Not sure what part of AL you live but there's an awesome Tackle Shop in Oxford, AL. I used to stop in there whenever I could while on travel for work.
Oh, congrats on the diploma.
***UPDATE***
Just got these lil fellers in!!!
I AM STOKED!!!!
OK Reggie, now go out there and clobber them for us.

I'm ON IT DOG-GONE IT!????
Ive caught a lot of fish on them. Esp. the watermelon red, and black with red sparkle. I use a bb shot for weight. They work best for me in brush ( imagine that ! ) I have only caught a few fish on the brush hog, but one was a 4 pounder.
The green pumkin chartruese tail yum dingers are great too . I tend to catch bigger fish on them than the bbhogs.

It's called The Tackle Box. A couple local fishermen took the shop over from an elderly couple. Still mom and pop-ish but with a lot of current stuff.
Enjoy
No, I don't own Virginia Guide.
They have all the current and past Zoom products, plus the ones shipped over to Japan, in every color available.
And if you want a special color, they can have a special run made for you but you need to order a lot of plastics.
I like MegaStrike and JJ's Magic for scent.
I think if a friend of mine was blowing me up with pictures of fish he's catching and wouldn't take me fishing I'd be blocking his number.

Nah, can't do that, the information & expertise he passes on is wayyyy too valuable!
He has some "issues"????, that I'd rather not be a part of, "flying down the river at 60 mph and over deep water!" ????????????
Keep em in yer prayers! He's a good dude...just battling some tuff demons in this season of his life...????
I've only caught like 2 bass on a texas rig... but I've gotten more bites on a baby brush hog than any other bait. It's a technique I need a lot of work on. I always throw it when I go bass fishing though, so one of these days I'll get better at it.
