How many of you change the treble hooks on your crankbaits right out of the package? I got the chance to listen to Rick Clunn Sunday and he said he that he always changes the trebles on his 1.5 or 2.5, not sure which one he was referring to, from size 1 to size 1/0. I've heard about people changing their trebles and didn't know if this was something very important to due or not. Just want to hear your opinions!
Thanks,
Okie
Never change them unless there's something wrong with the original one's such as being rusted after extended use or bent hooks. I don't have enough money to buy a $6 lure and then $6 trebles to go on them. Of course you could by a LC and get good hooks already on them.
I usually keep them on a season or so. Gammy hooks are awsome ad rarely rust. Eventually, all the hooks get changed fro Gammy hooks. I will change the front hook on trap baits and put a larger one on as well. If you but from somplace like lurecraft, you can get better deals on hooks like pack of 25 for $14 versus pack of 6 for $5 at tackle shops. The only lures that don't get changed are lucky craft. They already come with quality hooks. Gammy's hold their sharpness as well so in the off-season, you don't have to do as much sharpening or replacing.
I usually change them unless it is a bait that comes with a premium hook already on it. I always change my hooks on rattletrap style baits to a bigger size and topwater baits also.
...to Mustad Triple Grips.
Always change my trebles on crankbaits, one size larger on belly hook and to Owner cutting points. It seems to really make a difference in hookups.
I always replace the stock hooks for all hard baits right out of the package to a stronger hooks, Owner hooks ST41 2X. Unless I'm just fishing for trout and/or bonita fish.
Check them on your finger. If they are sticky sharp they're fine if not change them with some Gammas.
Only bait's I've ever changed hooks on right out of the package are Jitterbugs. Usually change those to Owners, or Gammy's.
I use the original hooks until they get dull. then I'll change them out.
If the bait has quality hooks and I want that size I leave the stock hooks
If the hook is not razor sharp ( checking how "sticky" the are ) I change them.
If I want to change the bouyancy ( something I normally do with Shad Raps ) I change the stock hooks for the next size up.
If the hooks show the slightes amount of rust I change them
I change them most of the time, unless they come with good hooks.
I always use Gammy's---they are sticky!!!!
i change them out, it makes a big difference. good hooks stick the fish I don't buy highend lures cuz of the numerous pike in my waters. so like the rapala's & bandits or whatever cheaper cranks i may buy with garbage hooks, i instantly change them.
its worth the added cost vs losing that big girl because the hook bent or even snapped off, its happened many times. especially on smallies, they can easily make you have a bad day when they mangle those cheap'o stock hooks and wave good bye to ya >
I change the treble hooks on lures that come with low quality hooks. Such as some Bill Lewis Rat-L-Traps. A good quality lure, such as a $6 one will most likely come with hooks that you don't need to change.
Everything I've bought from Arbogast and Heddon gets changed before I use them with Gammys.

Gammys rock. Baits such as those need their hooks changed.

rapala's are around that price range & their vmc hooks are junk-i can't tell ya how many times i've had fish bend those trebs. plus their not near as sharp as gammy ewg trebs or owner.
when i started upgrading all my trebs, i noticed a significant difference in landed percentages. that made my decision easy if its worth the extra $$ to upgrade any & all (even slightly) inferior trebs before i throw that crank or topwater.
I often change the front hook to a bigger size. Sometimes I use a red one on the front.
I fish a lot of lipless cranks and in the 5/8 to 1 oz size and the hooks they come with are usually small and chromed so I switch them out for one size larger owner trebles. If a bass breathes on it, I usually have them.
I don't change out the hooks, LCs are already good enough
I'm like most others. If the hooks are quality and sharp, I don't change them. On everything from Strike King, for instance, I change out. I change hooks, too, to vary buoyancy, as well.
i like bigger hooks on my cranks.
i also agree with the statement that VMC hooks are crap, and i really dislike the Sure-Set hooks.
#7 shad rap with Owners #4 hooks. i like it much better over the stock size.
What does everyone use to replace size 5 trebles on some of the LC baits (like Pointer 100s)?
Most times I'll upgrade to larger and red hooks there rare times I won't change.

Actually, Owner started marketing the #5 size hook.
I almost always change my out to red VMC short shank hooks. I've never had a problem with fish bending those hooks and they're really sharp and seem to stay that way for me. Gamakatsu and Owners are just too expensive for me, maybe if I was tourny fishing I'd be more concerned about it but not just fun fishing.

Why would he design a bait then change the trebles out of the box? If the design was wrong then why wouldn't he make that change?

the bending of the vmc hooks come from smallies for me. losing big girls because i get my topwater or crank back and the treb is bent out so far it looks like its giving me the middle finger ;D i learned my lesson using junk hooks that way, besides realizing how much better quality hooks stick fish and get landed compared.
i don't tourny fish and fish for fun as well but i also fish to catch fish, not lose fish. to me there is nothing fun about losing a fattie cuz of crapper hooks on my hard baits.
about 7 bucks for around a dozen gammy ewg trebs is bout the price of one rapala crank. you can upgrade 5-6 hardbaits for a pak, not that much of an expense if you ask me.

I'll bet it's a contractual issue. Perhaps Clunn likes Owner, but Lucky Craft has a contract in place to use Daiichi-sharpened VMC hooks.
I do.
I almost always change my trebles to stingers or triple grips.
My only exception is LC's

Thanks, I saw them tonight when I went to Dicks. Size 5 is difficult to find.
I'm lazy and many of my trebles are down to 1 or 2 hooks, I leave them that way on purpose. I like my fish hooked only on 1 lip, not both, same reason I prefer siwash hooks for my spoons.

Maybe it's the regular shank hooks you've tried? I use the VMC short shanks and catch a lot of wipers on them up to the 8-9 pound range and have never had one straighten, even having to clamp the drag down to keep them out of trees and cables. I get the short shanks VMC hooks for 7 bucks for a 25 pack and I change my hooks a lot. Only being able to do 5-6 baits when you change hooks on your go-to baits every few trips gets expensive!

That's sums up my approach as well. I also don't care a lot for chrome color hooks when fishing clear water, bronze seems to be the least noticeable.

vmc hooks are of the same sharpness, which doesn't nearly compare to gammies & owner. i'd rather pay a bit more, have more confidence in what i'm throwin, stick more fish then pay less, lose more and be dissapointed, but again thats me. the higher end trebs have proved themselves worthy of the added expense, i'm sold on it.
when you replace the trebles hooks...
do you use regular round bend or EWG? :-/
thanks..
me personally, i really like the black gammy ewg trebs. but any of the higher end brands & types will serve you well. everyone has their fav that way, personal preference.
change out all baits to Owner ST-41's , best treble hook out there
For all of you that change your hooks, how do you know what size the hooks are? I've never changed treble hooks but have a few lures that I need to do so with, I just have no idea what size hooks to get
Just bring the bait to the store, and match them up by eye. After a while, you just know what each size is by looking.
i have a couple, the strike king lures i have come with junk hooks, but im not wasting extra cash on more trebles, so first i sharpen the stock hooks myself use the stock hooks for a while and when they get dull, i swap them out for whatever i feel like spending on for whatever style of hook i need, brand isnt important. I only have about maybe 6 or 7 hardbaits that i use alot, among them are a few lc's ( no exchange needed) and others which i swap out the back hook with a sureset hook.
i dont care what other people say about vmc, its sharp enough for me.
Once I have caught a bunch of fish on a crankbait, it gets 'promoted' to the elite box and gets a set of Mustad KVD elite trebles. The elite box only has my top producing crankbaits. I'm not going to bother changing hooks on a bait until it has proven itself. lol, it has to earn them.
