Hey all,
First post here. Im wondering what exactly everyones setup(s) for jigging are?
Things id like to know:
Rod - kind, length, action, style ( casting / spinning)
Line - what brand of line ( mono, flouro or braid)
Reel
Jigs - what jigs do you use and when
Just looking to hear what setups some people prefer so i can try out some new setups and combos
Been fishing many years but am only really getting into jigging seriously lately
Thanks
My main rig is a G.Loomis BCR854/ Curado 200E supertuned/ Kanzen with a Tatsu #20 leader.
My dedicated weighted soft plastic rig would also be considered perfect for jigs: G.Loomis GLX
MBR844C/ CTE100GT supertuned/ Tatsu #20. For swim jigs: MBR842C/ Core 50E/ Kanzen #20
with Tatsu #15 leader. Lastly, for hair jigs: Dobyn's Champion 683C/ CH50MG/ Tatsu #12.
i use a 7'6 veritas m'h with a lews mg 7.1.1.. fluro most of the time 15 lb does the job for me... jigs style depends on what your fishing.. but i mainly use swimg jigs or casting jigs, grass jigs and football.. 1/2 oz or 3/8 oz.. if im in heavy cover ill throw it on my heaby rod with 60lb power pro i use this setup around very heavy cover and use 1 oz or 1/2oz... get a few different styles and wieghts you figure out what you prefer.
I have 2 I use primarily:
Citica 200E 6:3:1
St. Croix Legend TBC74HF - rated 3/8-1 1/2oz
30lb Power Pro Slick 8
This handles 75% of my jig fishing. As long as it weighs enough I'll throw it on this rig.
Curado 50e 6:4:1
St. Croix Rage RC68MXF
30lb Power Pro
For bank fishing with a jig, or for lighter jigs. Used the other 25% of the time.
I just got a Ardent f500 in last week or so. I've used it a couple of times now and it's growing on me.
St. Croix Mojo MBC70MHF
Spooled with 80lb Power Pro
Used it for heavy flipping/pitching duty. If its in the junk, this is what I use.
NRX854/chronarch 51mg 15# tatsu 3/8oz-3/4oz brush jigs - use these unless there is rock
DX745/chronarch 51e 20# sniper football jigs-sometimes heavy trigs-use football whenever there is any rock
dx744/chronarch 51e 16# sniper 3/16-3/8 texas rigs
savvy733/curado 201e7 30# 832 swim jigs 3/16-5/16 most of the time 1/4
dx743/curado 51e 12# tatsu 1/4oz finesse jigs/senkos/1/8oz trigs
Here's my setup for jigs and Punching up to 3/4oz weights
7'MH Rapsody Rod ("The One")
20lb Seaguar AbrazX Fluoro
7:1 Abu Reel - Pro Max
For Finesse Jigs up to 1/4 oz I go to spinning
6'6" MH Spinning
10lb PowerPro Braid
12lb Seaguar Invizx Leader.
These are the jigging rods I use;
1. GLX 853C- is paired with my CH50E right now with 30lb braid Power Pro, use this for 1/4 to 1/2 oz jigs.
2. GLX 894C - has a Chronarch 50MG 30lb braid - use this for 1/2+ up to 3/4.
Powell 723, Lews TP, 50# Power Pro braid (leader optional) 1/4 - 1/2oz, mostly 1/4 and 3/8
Phenix M1 7'2 H/XF, Lews TSS, 50# Power Pro braid(leader optional), 1/2 - 3/4 oz
Both are casting set ups.
Daiwa Zillion 100HSLA with 15lb Trilene fluoro on a Daiwa Zillion 7' MH rod
Shimano Chronarch 200E7. Spooled with 20# Seaguar Tatsu. Sits on a Dobyns Extreme 745 FH.
Shimano Curado 200G7. Spooled with 40# Power Pro Sick in Timber Brown. Sits on a Shimano 7'2" MHXF Crucial.
Both casting set ups. I'm testing out the Tatsu on my pitching setup now but I had been using the same 40# PP Slick in Timber Brown.
I have several that use, depending on the jig and cover.
Deep South XXH Flipping Stick/Daiwa TD-X/65# Power Pro: 1/2 oz. and and up brush, grass, footballs
Dobyns DX744/Chronarch E/50# Kanzen: all purpose
G.Loomis JWR 803/TD-X/50# Power Pro: docks, short work in wood.
SC Legend Tx. LTBC70MF/JDM Zillion 7.1:1/15# CXX: swim jigs
My favorite jigging setup I use is a Dobyns Extreme Cast Rod 7' Light 701 paired with an Abu Garcia LTX with the micro spool on it (50m of 6lb tatsu) I used for custom made finesse jigs, really fun to fish.
7'6"MHF ***- Revo SX- 50lb braid - 3/8-3/4oz pitching/football jigs
6'8"MXF St. Croix Avid- Revo SX- 12lb red label- 1/4oz swim jigs/finesse jigs
Jig bites tend to feel different than normal Texas rig bites. As much as I enjoy jig fishing I feel the need to have very good jig rods to handle finesse 1/4 oz jigs all the way up to jigs that push the 3/4 - 1 oz range.
Dx 742 / custom alphas reel with 10# tatsu - finesse jigs around the 1/4 oz range
Dx 703 / curado 50e - with 12# sniper - 3/8 oz jigs mostly the northstar hair jigs
Cumara 7'2 mh xf / curado 200e with 12 shooter - bigger 1/2 - 3/4 oz jigs other paddle tail trailers
Megabass Orochi xx EMTF / scorpion 1000xt with 12 tatsu - 3/8 - 3/4 oz jigs - most versatile jig rod I own.
NRX 873 / custom tdz with 12# tatsu - mostly 1/2 - 3/4 oz jigs
Working on adding something better for my heavier jigs. Right now I have 4 rigs for the job
1 ) NRX 893C / Curado 50e Supertuned, Abec 9's, / Tatsu 12lb.....for anything 3/16-1/2oz
2.) Same combo as above but with 12lb Shooter
3.) Shimano Cumulus 7'1" MHXF / Curado 200e7 Supertuned, Abec 9 / Tatsu 12lb....3/8 -3/4oz but feel on the heavier end its pushing it.
4.) NRX 803C / Shimano Chronarch 50MG Supertuned, Abec 9 / Tatsu 10lb / swim jigs and some dock situations. In 1/4oz - 1/2oz mostly 3/8oz
Could use something for the heavier jigs but I haven't found them too effective for how I fish. Considering adding a spinning rod like a BSR852 GLX or a NRX 852s as well. Haven't figured that one out yet.
combos
7ft1 mh *** black with a lews tournament mg-15lb invizx
7ft mh carbonlite with gold carbonlite reel-12lb bps fluoro
7ft mh veritas with revo sx gen 2-50lb hi vis braid
7ft11 heavy veritas flipping stick/ BPS PQ with 65lb pp
I use a 7'6" and a 7'11" legend tournament with a 7.1 tournament pro either spooled with 50# 832 or tatsu 15#
I also have a ardent flipping reel with 25# vicious but I'm not that good with it :-/
NRX 893/Lews TP 12lb tatsu
DX744/Lews Tournament 15lb tatsu
DX745/Lews TP 20lb tatsu
Rod: *** *** 7'3" MH
Reel: Lews Speed Spool
Line: 50# PP
Jig: G&G Bait Company 7/16 oz Jig
Trailer: Net Bait Paca Chunk or Yamamoto D/T H Grub
KLX 7'3" w/ Lews BB1
ALX "Deputy" with Scorpion 1000xt
Dobyns DX744 Daiwa steez (also use it for t-rig)
Dobyns DX745 w/ Okuma Komodo. (Use this one the least)
My main set up is a Curado 200 E7 on a 6-6 MH St. Croix premier rod. I usually have 15# mono or fluoro spooled on it. For jigging in lilypads, or punching I use an old H action 6-6 Diawa procaster rod with an Abu 5600 C3. I have 50# braid spooled on that one.
I actually use the dobyns champion flipping stick 765 for all my jigs and creature. I also, have gotten in to using the shimano clarus 7'2 heavy for a lot of my jigging. My swim jig rod (formally my full time jig rod) is a st. Croix ltb 7'1 mh xf. I switched over because the ltb I got was a bit to soft for pitching in my opinion
7 ft MH/F Allstar ASR
Abu 2nd gen Revo
20# Invisix floro

Earlier this summer I was jigging with a 7'3" TFO rod and a Pflueuger President reel. I recently bought a nice casting rod and reel and it as well works great for jigging. Here is a short video that I put together for a college class Im in. In this video I was jigging with the TFO rod and using Strike King Coffee Tubes.
7'3" klx mh fast/ lews team gold 7.1:1/ 16lb sunline sniper-gets the jig duty most of the time
7'6" mh carbonlite/ gold carbonlite reel/ 16lb sunline sniper- use this when im not carolina rigging with it.
6'9" kistler magnesium micro/ gold carbonlite/ 16lb sunline sniper- use this one for t rigs and love it for pitching jigs. im super accurate with it.

What rod is this? What is the low end rating? Are you using trailers? I bought a Villain ML spinning rod rated 1/8 oz. on the low end. Planned on using it as my panfish rod. Figured it would be no problem throwing 1/16 or less. I mean it is a spinning rod after all. No dice. Rod wouldn't load and distance was dismal.
I do have an older Fenwich HMG with the same low end rating. The seller said it would handle down to 1/16 oz. This is a baitcast rod. I've only gone down to 3/16 oz. so far, so can't verify his statement.

Northstar Black Series jigs in 1/2-3/4oz
Dobyns DX743

Toray Superhard Upgrade 14#
Northstar Black Series jigs in 1/4-3/8oz
I choose between these depending on the type of cover
7'6" Carbonlite MH/F and Pro Qualifier
7'2" Clarus MH/XF and Pro Qualifier
7' Carbonlite MH/F and Revo S
Powell diesel 7'2" bps PQ 40lb braid 15lb FC leader
Powell diesel 7'6" lews tournament mg 50lb braid 20lb FC leader
I am not a fan of using spinning rod/reel combo for casting and retrieving bass jigs because it's difficult to keep in touch with jig by using rod feedback alone. There are a few exceptions to that are lightvweight dart and shaky head jigs that weigh 1/8 oz or less.On 9/5/2013 at 1:29 AM, fishguy613 said:Thanks for the replies
right now i like using yum crawbugs with a 1/8 oz weighted worm hook, using it with 30lb braid on a procaster spinning rod rated for 1/8 - 3/4oz 6-14lb line
also have a fenwick walleye class medium casting rod and a veritas 7ft mh with revo sx i mostly use for trolling and crainkbaits / spinnerbaits but am debating using one or both for jigging as well. am using them both with 10 and 12 lb mono.
should i put braid on one of my casters and jig with it? if so what lb line
You are currently fishing a T-rig with craw trailer using a keel weighted hook and your tackle maybe OK for that type of presentation.
The problem with a walleye action rod is the action is slower than a faster action bass worm/ jig rod and lacks the needed quick hook setting power.
Your bait casting reel is OK if it is a good smooth operating reel.
What you need is a good well balanced worm/jig rod. For general use a 7' medium heavy (4 power) fast action bait casting rod rated for 1/4-1 oz lures, 15-20 lb line. I don't know what budget limits you may have, good rods are in the $150 to $500+ range. The more expensive rods have top quality components, life time warranty, exceptional customer service and weigh about 4 oz or less.
I use both Lamiglas and ALX custom rods and recommend looking at ALX off the self Zolo-B series OBC-4-85F.
thanks WRB
i purchased a fenwick smallmouth casting rod 6'10 medium action fast tip, its rated a bit light 1/8-5/8 was going to use it for crankbaits but may use it to jig
still very new to setting up rods properly, am pretty overwhelmed lol

That would be a great 1/4 to 3/8 oz jig rod if the cover is moderate to sparse.

It does a nice job in the rivers in my area. I was sorely tempted to pick one up, but I managed to beat the bait monkey off for a little while longer. My friend has 3 of the Fenwick smallmouth rods, and has the same one that fishguy613 bought.
Does great with a 1/4 or bitsy flip with a smaller trailer like a single tail grub.
I have that exact same rod and definitely you can use it for those weights, I usually fish finesse (light jigs) and flukes with it. Also pretty good with 5" Senkos.
thanks alot
i used the rod today paired with a abu revo sx with 14 lb trilene xt green mono
i really liked it, tried crankbait, lipless crankbait and spinnerbait all worked very well. casted great, had perfect action and i felt confident in the setup. got a decent pike was 25" about 4 pounds
will try jigging with it tomorrow and see how i like it
