Weird Issue With Both Chronarch/crucial Combos 2024

fishing user avatarTNBassin' reply :

Tonight while out on the water I wanted to deactivate a brake on my Chronarch, but I couldn't get the side plate off. I picked up my other Chronarch which also sits on a Crucial, and couldn't get that side plate off. So I try again when I get home and still couldn't get it to budge, so I decided to take the reels off the rods and see what was up. Off the rods they both open smoothly and quickly. ON the rods however, they won't pop loose so I can access the brakes. I mounted one of the reels on my ***, and it pops open fine but you can tell there is slight resistance. Does anyone know I don't understand is going on? One Crucial is a 7'MH Med Fast rod and the other is a 7'2 MH XF rod. Seems when the reel seat is tightened down is when the issue pops up, but I don't over tighten it at all. It's not a HUGE deal, but I would prefer to not loosen the reel seat up while out on the water just to make adjustments to my brakes.

fishing user avataraavery2 reply :

Those Revo's are starting to look better and better now.     Only thing I can think of would be that for some reason the rod is causing the reel to flex when tightened down, putting it in a bind.  Have not heard of this problem before.

fishing user avatarTNBassin' reply :

That's what I was thinking. I can mount the reel, tighten the seat, turn the latch to open, then loosen the reel seat and it will pop open at a certain point every time. Both Chronarchs, both Crucials.

fishing user avataraavery2 reply :

Try the reels on another rod and see what you get.

fishing user avatarTNBassin' reply :

Opens fine on my ***.

fishing user avataraavery2 reply :

Might try putting a little shim of some sort under the reel foot in the reel seat, it's all I can think of.  Could probably use something like a business card or playing card, just to check it  out.

fishing user avatarTNBassin' reply :

I'm gonna try some electrical tape on the reel foot and see what happens. If the frame is flexing then I have serious reservations about using the reels with these rods. I really don't think the frame is flexing though, because the reel still feels smooth and there's no rubbing sounds coming from the spool or brakes. Something isn't right though obviously.

fishing user avataraavery2 reply :

You might try to contact Bantam1, if you don't know how to get a hold of him let me know and I can shoot you a PM.  He is a product manager for Shimano and is usually on top of any common problems with the Shimano line of products.

fishing user avatarlmbfisherman reply :

That is just odd, I own Compre, Clarus and Crucials with the same reel seat.  Never really noticed an issue opening the side plates with the reels I am using (Citica and Curado G).  I own one new Chronarch but it's the 50E and never used it on these rods.

That is a good idea, he'll take care of you.

fishing user avatarQUAKEnSHAKE reply :

I have CH50E tried on my Cumara-fine and on my Clarus-fine.

That issue would bug the heck out of me.

Keep in mind that the Citica G and Curado G are a different form factor than the Chronarch, think Curado E.

Yeah true, maybe I'll test my 200E7 on the Crucial and see if I get the same issue. Never bought a Chronarch 200 series (newer ones), so I can't duplicate.

fishing user avatarrockchalk06 reply :

I can't duplicate it. I've tried tighting the reel seat down so hard it's over tourqued and no issues.

When you say it won't come open, are you giving it some elbow grease? They don't open near as easy as my Revo's did at first. After a few months they became smoother. The tolerances on the Chronarchs are pretty tight.

fishing user avatarjtesch reply :

It's  some kind of torque that is stressing the reel and not allowing the side plate to open. The Chronarch being an aluminum reel really shouldn't  flex but obviously it is. even if the reel seat isn't straight the reel shouldn't flex. So I have to think it is a reel issue

fishing user avatarTNBassin' reply :

I shimmed the reel seat on the crucial with some pieces of cotton ball, and now it's working ok. I still have to pull or jiggle the latch a little but at least it's opening and closing with the reel tightened down. When it does open, sometimes it wants to bring the spool with it, so I have to be careful. I'm assuming the reel seat is too deep on my rods, so I'm having to crank down the reel tighter than it should be and it's stressing the frame. Seems to be a rod issue.

As jtesch said, the Chronarch's aluminum frame should never flex.  Period.

Have you checked the hinge pin the palm-side cover rides on?  Sounds like the reel seat is binding on the hinge pin when locked down.

fishing user avatarTNBassin' reply :

The reel seat is no where near the hinge pin. And after messing with it, I don't see how the frame would be flexing. The spool is smooth and quiet, and the handle has no added resistance. This is happening on 2 new Chronarchs and 2 new Crucials. All were bought at different places.

fishing user avatar*Hootie reply :

I love a mystery, but not this kind. Hope you can resolve the problem quickly. That would bug the crap out of me.

Hootie

fishing user avatarTNBassin' reply :

I may take one back to BPS tomorrow and see if that one will work without shimming the reel seat. Got them working fine as of now though, and have sent an e-mail to Shimano's customer service dept to see if they have any answers. As I said, they problem doesn't exist on my *** so it's gotta be an issue with the rods.

Yes mine will pull the spool a bit as well but my other reels do the same at times too.

fishing user avatarcraww reply :

My e7 does that at times...never made the connection of the reel seat putting it in a bind. I actually tried to show a buddy where the spool bearings were a few weeks back and liked to never got it open. Kind of embarrassing lol.

fishing user avatar.RM. reply :

It is a rod issue, not the reels....

The reel seat on the rod is to deep and cause's the rod assembly that the side plate rotates on to bind in the seat, (look at it mounted without the shimming)................. :Victory:

fishing user avatarTrippyJai reply :

If it does that with only your rods then I agree with .RM. that it's a rod issue or it'll do it with every rod. The frame should never flex like others have mentioned. I have 7 E7s and never had this issue. Another thing to try is, look up the cast control and drag and see if it helps any.

fishing user avatarTNBassin' reply :

Just swapped a reel out and same deal. Shimmed the reel seat and side plate opens.

Actually the the reel seems to bind up at themiddle/ front of the side plate. The back of the sideplate will show a gap when unlocked, but it seems the front is what is getting bound up. But I agree it has to be the rod's reel seat that is causing the issue. Swapped out the Chronarch I got at BPS for another and same issue without shimming the seat.

fishing user avatarFishwhittler reply :

Okay, does the reel seat make contact with the bottom of the plastic front cover?

fishing user avatarthehooligan reply :

They open and close much easier if you unscrew the cast control knob a bit.

No. Nothing is rubbing or touching anything it shouldn't.

You referring to spool tension knob? If so, I've tried loosening it up before opening the side plate. If you're talking about loosening the assembly that unlocks the sideplate then no I haven't tried that. I've literally got both cotton ends from a q tip stuffed in the front of the reel seat and have them working while snugged down on the rod.

fishing user avatardam0007 reply :

Right or left hand retrieve?

fishing user avatarTNBassin' reply :

Lefty.

fishing user avatarCapt.Bob reply :

I have never run into that on my St. Croixs?? Even my Shimanos worked great on them before I went to Lew's. It would be interesting to no if it is common to that rod with other reels, or just the Shimano reel's on the Shimano rod??.

fishing user avatarHooligan reply :

I've noticed the same thing, but it is limited to the left hand reel for me. I think it has to do with where the uplocking reel seat connects with the reel foot. It isn't the frame flexing, I'll put money on that.

fishing user avatarTNBassin' reply :

I was messing with them both again yesterday, and took all of the shimming out of the back part of the reel seat, and just put 2 pieces of cotton in the front of the seat and got the side plates to pop open pretty easily. Seems the front of the reel seat on the Crucials is where the problem lies, although it doesn't make contact with any part of the reel other than the reel foot. If it is the frame flexing, it sure isn't taking much to get it out of whack.

fishing user avatarCapt.Bob reply :

I too would find it hard to believe the frame on the Chronarch could flex from a reel seat problem. They are a pretty rigid frame!

fishing user avatarTNBassin' reply :

Spoke with Bantam1 on TT, and he is getting me some rod shims.
