I've always used two piece rods what i have now is the abu garcia vegeance two piece 6'6 casting and 7 ft spinning rod. Im trying to upgrade but i noticed there isn't any higher quality rods that arent 1 piece. Should i just get a 1 piece.

St Croix do a few spinning rods in 2 piece in their avid and legend ranges.

I used to have to buy two piece rods, because my old boat did not have storage for one piece rods,unless I left the rods out and on the floor. With that said, when I got my new boat I immediately switched over to one piece rods and never looked back. One piece rods are much more sensitive, and you don't have to worry about the rods pieces separating after many repetitive casts. Go to one piece, you won't be sorry if one piece rods will work for you. JMO

If you want to stick with the vengeance or even better, the vendetta, go with a 1 piece. Especially at length 6'6ft. isn't too long so storage is pretty easy. 1 piece gives you more strength and sensitivity.

FWIW - I have a collection of 2 and 3 piece rods for when I travel. For the Toledo Bend trip I took 2 2-piece (Abu Vengeance) and 2 3-Piece (Bass Pro Extremes). 2 baitcasters (M and MH) 2 spinning (M and MH) I can cover my entire tacklebox with these rods without any real issues.
Look into the BassPro Extreme, Browning Travel and you already mentioned the St. Croix which looks nice. The St. Croix I saw was 4 pieces.
If I had a choice between 1 and 2 piece rods I would always get a 1 piece. It really all depends on your need for storage, portability etc.

If you buy a 1 piece over 7 ft be careful when carrying it in and out of house, through doors, etc. It took me a while to get use to...almost broke a tip once or twice. But I agree that 1 piece rods are better overall. Just tougher to store and move.

Yes there are good quality 2 and more pieces rods in the market, the catch is: you may not find what you want in your favorite manufacturer´s line up. GLoomis has very good quality 2 piece rods, and there are many other manufacturers that offer them ( mostly Japanese manufacturers ), it´s just a matter of looking around.

Umm I'll say this i have a 7ft ugly stick I paired with a budget reel and I can feel
Bites with that way better then I can with my ultra light crappie poles and those are nice two piece rods. Plus you don't have to worry about hook sets and the pole coming out hahaha those are classic

I disagree that high quality two piece rods are significantly/detectably less sensitive that one piece rods. Would be interesting to run a blindfold test. I'm talking the St Croix line, specifically, since they have a good number of two piece rods. One advantage of one piece is that it never comes apart, a rare but possible occurence.
Regarding the carrying of long rods, carry them butt first, with the tip trailing, and it is much less likely to be damaged. Especially with long fly rods carried through brush, butt first. Of course you also want to avoid ceiling fans.

Unless you have to get it in and out of tight spots, go with one piece. I always hated two piece rods.

I used to use 2 piece rods exclusively and loved them. I will say though that once I moved to the 1 piece rods I never looked back. I do have a couple Fenwick 7ft HMG 2 piece rods just in case I need one but I don't take them out much.

The main reason I went with a 1 piece is something you already alluded to...selection. A whole new world of choices open up to you.

The absolute top of the line rods (i.e. St. Croix Legend Xtreme, G.Loomis NRX, etc...) are one piece rods. Well even the GLX, Legend Elites, etc.. are mostly one piece rods as well with the exception of the:
G.Loomis MBR 783-2 C GLX
You can go JDM though. I believe Major Craft and other JDM companies have two piece rods you can buy. And if you really need a two piece rod you can also get one from a custom rod maker.

Back in May I had an interesting conversation with the owner of Fly South down in Nashville ( was down there on business and wandered into the shop on a Saturday).
His take (and any errors here are mine, not his) was that there is one overlooked advantage of multi-piece rods: Each section of a multi-piece rod can be built with differently with the specific function of that part of the rod in mind.
That isn't an option with a one piece...yes, they can taper the materials to produce a fast action, or a slower one...but the maker of the multi-piece rod has even more options.
The discussion revolved around fly rods (a one piece 9 ft. rod is a pain in the fanny no matter how "sensitive" it is)...most of my fly rods are 4 piece - I have a a couple of three piece rods, and two or three two piece...and there's no appreciable difference in overall feel or performance...and I have no less confidence in the multi piece rods.
A thought on rod storage of multi-piece rods in the boat - I store my rods rigged and ready to go as I don't want to be fiddling round with putting a rod together and rigging it when I am on fish...so the few two piece spinning and bait casting rods I own are always together unless I am traveling with them without the boat. Same for my fly rods.

That can be a problem, ceiling fans are the worst menace ever invented to destroy a fishing rod. well other than a careless partner.

2 piece rods are more convenient, especially if your car is small (like mine).
Personally I like the 1 piece rods better, more sensitive, dont have to worry about the top piece flying off or twisting.
I have a few 2 piece and 1 piece rods though, depends where I'm going.
I recently have been using my roof rack with skii attachments and just putting my 1 piece rods ontop.
looks so coollllll. LOL

Went to Bass Pro, about a 3 hour drive, I've never been and REALLY wanted to.
After over paying for a rod, one of the cashiers offered a warranty just incase it breaks. Of course I said no, im careful I'll be fine.! Which he then replied with "okay but if you break the rod with your car door or something dont come back crying".
SO after my long trip back home, Guess who snapped the rod???....with the car door...kid jynxed me.

I remember several years ago my brother had to have the latest graphite rod paid over $300 for it.To make a long story short he put it in the trunk of his friends car,and got it squaared away,but they forgot to put ice in the cooler so they stopped and filled their cooler,but unfortunately the rod tip was left sticking out,ruined the whole trip for my brother.

Please stop saying 1 piece rods are more sensitive, as in everything in this hobby, a one piece pos rod is not going to be "more sensitive" than a good quality 2+ piece rod. When you make a comparison between a multi piece ( being the most common 2 pieces ) rod you really have to make it against it´s similar in one piece, so far, in my experience the difference is from negligible to down right non existent 2 piece vs 1 piece.

Valid point, cant speak for anyone else, but I was comparing the same exact rods that come in 1 or 2 piece..

These aren't your grandfather's 2pc rods. The ferrules aren't chrome plated brass anymore. There is a lot of engineering that goes in the design of a 2pc rod to ensure it will perform like the similar 1pc model. The only difference I've noticed between 1pc and 2pc blanks of the same action/power is the 2pc is a touch more powerful. I attribute that to the extra material in the ferrule.

I bought my last two piece rod back in the mid 70's. I got so tired of the tips coming out or twisting so the eyelets don't line up, I bought my first one piece and have never considered a two piece since. I have probably broken the tips off at least a couple thousand dollars worth of one piece rods, because if a given fact, if you have a $50 rod and a $300 rod together, it's always going to be the $300 rod that gets broken. Even at that, I would never consider a two piece rod for regular use. I do have two multi-section, survivor kits, but that's it for anything other than one piece rods.

i just bought a custom rod from a member here and the usps was nice enough to make it into a 2 piece rod for me. Do 2 piece rods come with a 6'5" piece and a 5" piece?

I have a 2pc SCV 7'6" MLXF in the build que to replace my 1pc SCIII of the same action and power. 2 reasons: 1. Its more powerful and 2. It's easier to travel with when my boat is not making the trip.
I leave that rod home more times than not because of the length, even though I love it. Wish I would have got the 2pc back when I built it 7 years ago.

Don't mean to laugh but I received a drop ship from St. Croix of what must have been a prototype 5pc Dropshot blank. Either that or FedEx was playing rugby with the box!

What I've heard from other rod builders is they will only reimburse for the parts. Basically the builder eats the labor.....twice.
